ANNUAL REPORT 2014–2015
Essential and Transformative
OUR PATIENTS ARE OUR PRIORITY
Three of the top five methods used by
American hospital emergency rooms to
reduce unnecessary procedures come
from The Ottawa Hospital. These methods, or rules, are the direct result of
physician-scientist research being done
in Ottawa. And they are saving hospitals
millions worldwide.
The fact that our research is being
adopted by other hospitals across
North America and around the world is
proof that research is making a significant impact and improving the quality
of patient care, today. Thanks to you,
our donors and volunteers, we have a
healthy and vibrant research enterprise
here at The Ottawa Hospital.
to watch. Dr. Duncan Stewart’s stem cell Gratefully,
trial to heal hearts after a heart attack; Dr.
John Bell’s work developing oncolytic
viruses to kill cancer cells; and Dr. Marc
Rodger’s findings that pregnant women
no longer need to inject themselves to
prevent blood clots are just a few of the
projects that are taking research from
lab to bedside.
Your philanthropy has been influential in
creating an environment where research
and clinical work thrive side by side. The
impact of your support is impressive, as
we transferred more than $20.6 million
in 2014–2015. This incredible support is
literally driving the vision of our Hospital
not only to accelerate invaluable
research but to improve patient care. As

MOLECULAR LAB
In mid-February 2015, a small temporary molecular
lab began genetic profiling of colon, melanoma, and
lung cancer tumours. With the lab becoming operational, patients with these cancers will receive their
results in days instead of weeks, allowing them to
begin treatments customized to their specific cancer
sooner. A larger permanent lab is being established
with plans to be operational within the next year.
“
Every month we hear of a co-worker,
friend or family member that has been
diagnosed with some form of cancer, and
the faster that we can figure out the type
of cancer and the ways to treat it, the
better. Having the lab here in Ottawa is
going to be fabulous.”
—D ANNY FERNANDES, s upporter of the new
Molecular Oncology Diagnostics Laboratory.
Kinaxis partnered with other
Ottawa-based companies, Calian,
DataKinetics, Gartner, ITnet, MDS
Aero, and NavPoint, in the White
Coat Campaign to purchase equipment for the Hospital’s Molecular
Oncology Diagnostics Laboratory.
Kinaxis launched their campaign in
early May and raised funds through
employee giving and a number of
successful internal events for a capillary sequencer.

Care and Support
WOMEN’S HEALTH
The Ottawa Hospital is a critical
resource for thousands of women dealing with chronic health problems and
medical issues particular to women.
We are building a new and expanded
Breast Health Centre to consolidate all
breast health services into one location. We are purchasing an MRI dedicated to breast imaging; conducting
critical research and clinical trials; and
expanding the minimally invasive surgical suites for gynecological and other
critical surgeries.
Retired lawyer Dr. Marguerite Ritchie’s passion for
making life better for women inspired her to donate
$500,000 to build a new operating room for minimally
invasive gynecology at the Shirley E. Greenberg
Women’s Health Centre at The Ottawa Hospital.
Dr. Marguerite Ritchie and Shirley Greenberg at the
June 23 unveiling of the room in her honour.
“We are very grateful for the generosity shown by Avon.
This donation will help us continue to provide quality care
to the thousands of patients who rely on our Breast Health
Centre every year.”
—DR. ANGEL ARNAOUT, s urgical oncologist at The Ottawa Hospital.
The Avon Foundation for Women donated $100,000 to the new Breast
Health Centre.

On June 10, we hosted The View on
Women’s Health, a dynamic afternoon where local celebrities and our
doctors discussed hot topics around
women’s health. It was an opportunity
for the approximately 200 women
who attended to ask questions and
hear about issues around gynecology,
menopause, breast and sexual health,
minimally invasive surgery, cancer
research, and the latest medical technology for women.
“Shoppers Drug Mart is proud to partner with our customers in support
of The Ottawa Hospital’s efforts to provide women in our community
with access to timely, compassionate and comprehensive care.”
Gabriel Pizza served 28,000 slices
of pizza in four days to 14,000
Ottawa Hospital staff. That translates
into 3,500 large pizzas made from
2,625,000 grams of dough, 1,312,500
grams of cheese, and 566,000 grams
of pepperoni! It took the coordination of 15 stores and an army of staff
to make and serve all the pizzas for

Every fall, Shoppers Drug Mart’s Tree of Life campaign supports women’s health.
This year, 31 local stores raised an incredible $113,773 for the Breast Health Centre,
bringing the total to $700,000 over nine years.
On November 17, we challenged women to Do
the Blue. Paula Doering, Senior Vice-President of
Clinical Programs for Peri-Operative Services, Cancer
and Diagnostics, was one of the many women who
painted their nails blue, pledged to support women’s
health, and do something healthy for themselves.

Impact and Influence
RESEARCH
The future of health care relies on research for the
development of better treatments for disease and
injury, and for cures. Our researchers are focused
on a wide range of health issues, particularly cancer,
regenerative or stem cell/molecular medicine, and
improving patient care. Some of the most important
clinical trials in the world are being conducted by
The Ottawa Hospital.
FACT
A local man survived a severe stroke
after undergoing a groundbreaking clot
removal procedure, which is now being
used around the world thanks to a clinical
trial involving Drs. Dar Dowlatshahi and
Cheemun Lum.
“We believe that research is key to moving forward in
our vision, building on our world-class reputation and
offering the very best health care. But research is not all
about test tubes and work in the lab. It is about patients.
It is about doing research to treat patients’ diseases and
to improve the quality of their lives.”
—D R. JACK KITTS, CEO and President of The Ottawa Hospital
The annual Ottawa Hospital Gala for cancer research on
November 1 was attended by 640 people who celebrated the

Inspiration and Hope
CANCER CARE
Each year, 9,000 new cancer patients are treated at the
Cancer Centre. Almost all cancer-related surgeries,
chemotherapy treatments, and radiation treatments
in Eastern Ontario take place at The Ottawa Hospital.
The lifetime probability of developing cancer is just
over 40 percent. However, we are making progress,
with an almost 70 percent of cancers being controlled
or cured.
When Arnie Vered was diagnosed in March 2013, his
pancreatic cancer was sufficiently advanced that a
simple surgery was not possible, and he had to seek
treatment in Montreal. Arnie wanted to help make
it possible for people to be treated closer to home,
and so he lent his support to establish the Vered
Family Chair for Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Research.

Nine-year-old Megan Power began
making and selling rainbow loom
bracelets (which she dubbed “Power
Loom”) when her Mom, Tracy’s, breast
cancer returned and metastasised to
her brain and spine. Wanting to raise
money to find a cure for cancer, Megan
has now raised and donated $5,000 to
The Ottawa Hospital.

funds in honour of her husband who passed away in
2010 from pancreatic cancer.
“
I am told I was one of the worst
cases The Ottawa Hospital had
ever seen, but they were more than
ready for me. They pulled the best
team together, and used state-ofthe-art equipment. They stopped at
nothing to save me. I was more than
just a patient. I was a priority.”

Since the community helped purchase the
da Vinci Surgical Suite in October 2011,
over 850 successful operations have been
performed using the robot on prostate,
head and neck, and gynecological cancer
surgeries.
In May, the Lyng family held their annual community dance in
Ashton to raise money to purchase an ultrasound machine with
elastography capabilities used for breast imaging. Their inspiration
has been their mother, Helen McKenna-Lyng, who passed away from
breast cancer in 2011.

“Charlie Logue was a great believer in giving back to this
community, and he inspired us to take up the gauntlet and make this much-needed dermatology centre a
reality.”
—J IM DURRELL With the incredible groundswell of community support, close to
$3 million was raised in 18 months for building and equipping the
new Dermatology Centre, and construction began in the spring
of 2015. Charlie Logue was an original member of the fundraising
committee who sadly passed away in 2013. The Charlie Logue
Memorial Golf Tournament held at Loch March on August 23,
2014, raised over $230,000, which was the final amount needed
to meet the campaign goal.

to provide assistance to adults living
with cystic fibrosis, a life-shortening
disease that affects mainly the respiratory and the digestive systems.
People with cystic fibrosis require
lifelong specialized treatment and
care. This year’s tournament raised
$25,000, bringing the two-year total
to $55,000.

OTTAWA RULES
The Canadian C-Spine Rule is used to
determine if a person needs a CT scan for
their cervical spine injury. The Canadian
CT Head Rule is used to determine if a
person needs a CT scan of their head
after a mild trauma. The Wells Rule determines the likelihood that a person has
blood clots in the lung. These are three
of the top five methods, or rules, used
in American emergency rooms to determine if patients need particular procedures. They were developed by doctors at
The Ottawa Hospital, and are saving hospitals millions of dollars a year.
In March 2014, we launched the 50/50
Perfect Payday Staff Lottery. Tickets
were available to all staff and volunteers of The Ottawa Hospital, the
Ottawa Hospital Research Institute,
and the uOttawa Heart Institute. The
lottery raised $137,623 for improved
patient care and research.
Brittany Walker was the first 50/50
