Shannon Lee Kelly George Schuck, Sr. Memorial Schol. The College of New Jersey Congresswoman Grace Meng Bill De Blasio NYC Public Advocate On Saturday, April 6th the Educational and Cultural Trust Fund sponsored the industry’s most notable annual educational event. An audience of over 500 guests entered the Electric Industry Center Auditorium to show support to the talented students who would receive their scholarship awards. The introduction of the dais dignitaries by George Schuck was followed with the presentation of colors by the Electchester Boy Scout Troop 357. Music majors from Queens College provided beautiful renditions of the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America. Michael Yee, director of the Educational and Cultural Trust Fund introduced Melvin Smiley, president of the Lewis Howard Latimer Progressive Association who opened the breakfast with his invocation. Mr. Yee then welcomed the recipients, their parents and all those in attendance and reported on the benefits available through the Educational and Cultural Trust Fund. Mr. Yee introduced the Chairman of the Joint Industry Board of the Electrical Industry and the Chairman of the Educational and Cultural Trust Fund, Dr. Gerald Finkel. Dr. Finkel spoke about the undergraduate experience and how it will benefit the recipients. Dr. Finkel spoke about the industry’s desire to support educational opportunities for participants and their families. Included in the forty-four scholarships awarded this year was a Father William J. Kelley, O.M.I. Memorial Scholarship that was presented to Corinne Olivia Fredericks for studies at the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University and was presented by Cornell’s Director of Admissions, Cathleen Shiels. Also awarded was the Dean Harry J. Carman Fellowship presented to Lola A. Brown for her Doctorate studies at the University of Maryland. Theresa Scalice-Lizzio representing the Alumni Association of Scholarship Recipients and the 2013 Scholarship Committee, announced the recipient of the award for this year’s Annual Essay Contest. This year the first prize, a $500 check, went to Jenna Spinella. The topic assigned was, “In 2012, 11.8% of wage and salary workers are members of a union. In 1983, the first year in which comparable union data became available, the union membership rate was 20.1%. What has contributed to this decline and what strategies can be employed by Local 3, IBEW to halt the decline?” Members of the 2013 Scholarship Committee and members of the Futurian Society, Francis Gonsalves and Richard Tolins continued the presentation of the scholarship awards. Lance Van Arsdale gave a history of the Sigurd B. Olsen Memorial Scholarship and thanked Mr. Olsen and his family for their extreme generosity. In 2001, the Olsen Foundation contributed the largest single amount of money to the IBEW Disaster Fund for the 9/11 victims. Mr. Olsen then presented the five Sigurd B. Olsen Scholarships each having a monetary value of $28,000. The Keynote Speaker for this years’ program was the Honorable Joseph Crowley, Congressman New York 14th Congressional District. Other political figures in attendance were Congresswoman Grace Meng; Toby Stavisky, New York State Senator; Bill DeBlasio, New York City Public Advocate and candidate for Queens Borough President Barry Grodenchick. New York City Comptroller John Liu was on hand to join the proud recipients for photos. Closing remarks were given by Local 3, IBEW Business Manager Christopher Erikson who congratulated the students, wished them success in their future endeavors and stressed to the college-bound students to be very afraid of those individuals who have nothing good to say about unions and threaten the valuable benefits collectively bargained by unions.
