INTRODUCTION
For more than 160 years, Alpha Sigma Phi
has used a variety of symbols and insignia
to outwardly express our Values of Silence,
Charity, Purity, Honor, and Patriotism.
We developed this Style Guide to help
ensure that our message and image are
accurately and consistently expressed. This
guide provides the standards for use of the
Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and Educational
Foundation graphic identity. For specific rules of grammar, spelling,
punctuation, and word usage, the Fraternity
and Foundation have adopted the guidelines
of The Chicago Manual of Style.

This manual will help you present consistent
messages about Alpha Sigma Phi’s Mission,
Purpose, and key messages:

When designing new pieces for Alpha Sigma
Phi, please refer to this guide for:

Following these guidelines will help make
your communication efforts easy, attractive,
and effective.

HOW TO WRITE A MEMBER’S NAME
Use the member’s name, followed by the
abbreviated college or university name,
followed by an apostrophe and the last two
digits of the initiation year -NOT graduation
year. The apostrophe should always be a
RIGHT aposotrophe. (Figure 1)
Do not use the chapter’s Greek name or the
individual’s roster number.
See page 36 for acceptable abbreviations of
college and university names.

To identify a local chapter with the Greek
letters, always center the name below the
symbols. The typeface should be Georgia
Bold, set to caps and small caps. The point
size should be 1/4 the point size of the
Greek letters. (Figure 3)

OFFICIAL SEAL
The Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity seal is used
in all official and formal fraternity settings.
It may appear in black, stone (PMS 430),
metallic gold (PMS 871), and cardinal (PMS
186). The PMS colors may be converted to
CMYK for four-color process printing. PMS
colors are defined on page 15.

OFFICIAL SEAL VARIATIONS
It is acceptable to use the Alpha Sigma Phi
seal as a stand-alone graphic. (Figure 4)
Only Alpha Sigma Phi Headquarters is
authorized to use the Alpha Sigma Phi
seal with “Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity.” The
type should be centered below the seal in
Ocean Sans, set to caps. It should appear
in the same color as the seal. The point size
should be 1/11 the size of the seal. (Figure
5)
If a chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi desires to
use the fraternity seal as an identifier, the
chapter’s name and school must be set in
the typeface Georgia Bold, set to caps and
small caps, and centered below the seal.

The chapter name lettering should appear
in the same color as the seal. The chapter
name point size should be 1/5 the size of
the seal. (Figure 6)
Please remember to keep seal and font
sizes proportionate to one another.

TAGLINE
The Alpha Sigma Phi tagline “to Better the
Man” speaks to the growth, development,
and success the Fraternity provides to our
members. (Figure 7)

“Leave Your Legacy” is used for internal
recruitment efforts led by either Alpha
Sigma Phi Headquarters or the chapter. (Figure 8)
When any of the taglines are printed
standing alone, they may appear in black,
white, and cardinal (PMS 186). PMS colors
are defined on page 15.

Only the “to Better the Man” tagline can
appear with the seal. It is centered directly
below “Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, Inc.” The
tagline can either appear in the same color

E-MAIL SIGNATURE
The e-mail signature of Alpha Sigma Phi is
the logo plus contact information for Alpha
Sigma Phi Headquarters, or for an individual,
department, office, or chapter. The signature
should include a postal address, website URL,
email address, and phone number(s).
The signature should be aligned left with the
tagline.

Tagline (18 pt. bold)
The signature may be created using the Franklin
Gothic Book typeface, with the tagline being
created using Cambria. It may appear in black
with the tagline in cardinal (PMS 186) or the
nearest red available.
SIGNATURE AS A RETURN ADDRESS
When the signature is used as a return address
on envelopes, packages, and other mailings,
use the horizontal version to conform to
postal regulations. The Headquarters version
was updated in 2012 to be used by both the
Fraternity and Foundation.

To ensure legibility, the Fraternity Seal
should never appear at less than 5/8 inches
in height. (Figure 13)
When using the Alpha Sigma Phi signature
as a return address, it is best to use
supplied art. The signature should not be
smaller than 2 3/4 inches in width. (Figure
14)

PLACING THE SEAL, TAGLINE, AND
GREEK LETTERS
Be sure to surround the seal, tagline, or
Greek letters with sufficient white space so
they stand out and remain uncluttered. A
good rule of thumb is to always use at least
1/8 inch around the graphic.
This active area should remain free of other
visual elements or page trim.

Franklin Gothic Book is the preferred text
font. If unavailable, Helvetica may be
substituted.
Ocean Sans is the font used when writing
out “Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity” beneath
and next to the seal. No other font may be
substituted.
Euphemia UCAS was adopted in 2011
when the Fraternity rebranded its lead
Programs. It is the font used in the lead
Programming logos, and for all signage at
lead Conferences and Events. See page 14
for lead Programming logos.
Georgia is to be treated as a decorative font
and used sparingly in subheads and design
elements. It is the preferred font for Chapter
and approved Alumni Association stationary.
Scriptina is an alternative font to be used
sparingly and solely for decorative use. No
other decorative font may be substituted.

OUR HISTORY
Alpha Sigma Phi was founded at Yale
University on December 6, 1845. Louis
Manigault, Horace Spangler Weiser, and
Stephen Ormsby Rhea, all freshmen, laid
down the basic principles of a society that
today counts its membership in the tens of
thousands.

Alpha Sigma Phi has maintained a proud
tradition of creating and perpetuating
brotherhood for men coast to coast. Through
the years, many brothers have noted
that Alpha Sigma Phi made a significant
contribution early in their lives. With
gratitude, these members have remained
loyal and are supportive of the Fraternity’s
future.
Today, Alpha Sigma Phi is recognized as a
fraternity of quality and stature. With more
than 110 chapters, colonies, and interest
groups, the Fraternity continues to offer
meaningful services and opportunities
to more than 3,700 undergraduates and
65,000 living alumni.

Vector Art vs. Raster Art
It is important to understand the
difference in digital art categories
because many file types will find
themselves in one category or the
other and will therefore determine
how you can use the artwork.
Vector artwork will allow the user
to completely (easily and cleanly)
change certain features of the art

GIF, Animated GIF (.gif)

converted into raster file types, but
it is considerably more difficult to
transform raster images into vector
images.
With that being said, the following
outlines which files fall into each
category (with the file extensions):

Adobe Illustrator (.ai)
Corel Draw (.cdr)
File Uses
Adobe Illustrator (.ai): Printing
(professional printing, you need
the program in order to open the
file), can be converted to raster art,
screen printing (i.e., T-shirts), ad
specialties/promotional products,
can be digitized for embroidery.
Corel Draw (.cdr): See Adobe
Illustrator above.
PDF: See Adobe Illustrator above.
Used often in proofing as you only
need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view
the files and not the program that
generated the PDF originally. Acrobat
Reader can be downloaded for free
online.
Illustrator EPS (.eps): See Adobe
Illustrator above. Used by printers.
Photoshop (.psd): Used mostly for
photographs and for adding photo
effects to converted illustration
art. Can only be opened using the
Photoshop software.
TIFF (.tif): Used mostly for
photographs. Can sometimes be
opened without Photoshop. Best
raster format to use for professional
printing, but only if the image
resolution is 300 dpi or better.
JPEG (.jpg): See Photoshop. Most
generally associated with photos
deriving from digital cameras.
In high resolution, may be used
for printing but can create poor
image quality and pixellation and is
therefore not recommended in every
case. Low-resolution (72 dpi) JPEGs
are suitable for web design. Most
computers can access these files
without the Photoshop software.
Windows Metafile (.wmf): This type
of file can be imported directly
into Microsoft Word as clip art and
opened in Adobe Illustrator if it was
generated from Illustrator.
GIF, Animated GIF (.gif): Used in
low resolution for web design and
animated web effects.
* Some file types fall under both categories,
depending on the program from which they
originated.
