TEACHER PROFILE Reporters Rok & Emilija, grade 10 Photography: Private Picture Qatar International School http://www.qis.org/ We were given an opportunity to interview a former teacher, Jonathan Elliott, who taught in our school from the year 2007 to 2010, when the school was still in Arendal centre. Mr. Elliott used to teach Humanities at our school. Now he lives in Qatar with his family, two daughters, ages six and eight years old. He was born in Cheltenham, a small city in the west of England, United Kingdom, . He has travelled with work, teaching and living in such countries as Spain, France, Norway, Thailand and now Qatar. Mr. Elliott says, “Travelling is addictive and exciting. I like exploring new cultures and different environments.” However, he also believes that travelling negatively affects his children, as it is difficult for them to get used to a different environment. Mr. Elliott currently teaches Humanities at Qatar International School (QIS), an IB World School. He finds it interesting to teach in a school with a very different culture and religion, compared to the other schools he has worked in. He teaches grades 10, 11 and 12 and he is the only Humanities teacher. He told us that he chose to teach Humanities because he wanted to make a difference in the environment by educating the younger generations about the world around us and what needs to be done to make a positive change. As a result of working in an international school, Mr. Elliott has learned that students all over the world deal with the same problems of stress and socialization no matter the culture or religion. His advice for all the students would be to work hard and study but to keep a balance between school and life. “Don’t be only focused on school as there is more to life than just that. Enjoy the journey. After school there will high school, then university, then work, a never ending story. Take time throughout the way to do other things.” Qatar International School Mr Elliott has fond memories of working at AIS. He misses our small community and how everyone here is very friendly. He really enjoyed working with Ms. Bente and thinks that she really believes for what the IB stands for and that is why she does such a good job as the Principal. When he was around the age of 10, Mr. Elliott loved the subject of Music as it was a different and unusual from all the other subjects, which required looking at a textbook. When it comes to music taste, , he says that his taste is very old school, as he listens to music such as “The Rolling Stones” and “Queen”. Later on, at the age of 16, he started liking English as he believed that literature used real emotions and people in a creative way. He enjoyed Geography, of course, which is what he currently teaches at QIS. When looking back at when he worked at AIS he remembers Norway and how different the countryside is. He misses the green nature and the balance that Norway has between life and work. Mr. Elliot will be staying at his cabin in Norway this summer to meet his friends and connect with the countryside again. In his spare time Mr. Elliott plays the guitar and does other activities with the family such as swimming and playing sports. Where in the world is the U.K His breakfast to get ready for work is simple yoghurt and a coffee, nothing too heavy as he believes that eating high carb foods would make him tired for the day. Mr. Elliott has some interests outside of work such as playing squash, football, playing the guitar and of course being with his family. He says that if he could say one sentence to the whole world it would be, “Be kind to each other and be kind and caring for the environment.” Language guides: Pragya, grade 4 Huh? At the time, the main islands were connected to Siberia and Korea by bridges of dry land, so people crossed on foot. The first society, called the Jomon culture, arose about 12,000 years ago. Around the same time, the Ainu people arrived by boat from Siberia. Japan is the only country in the world with a reigning emperor. The U.S got its independence from Great Britain in 1776 after winning the revolutionary war. Colonists fought for their freedom because they wanted to make their own decisions and have ownership over their things. On July 4 th 1776 the declaration of independence was approved after lots of discussion and revisions (revisions mean changes). Thomas Jefferson wrote the declaration and worked with a small group including John Adams and Benjamin franklin. On the 4th of July, Americans celebrate their freedom. The U.S.A is a democracy, which means that people can take part in governing, just like in Norway. Americans celebrate July 4th with parades and picnics that sometimes include watermelon eating contests. I would like to take part in this contest! Some towns organize fun runs or baseball games and barbeques are common. Typical foods at a barbeque can include: hotdogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob and apple pie. Most American kids wear shorts and a t-shirt on the 4th of July. Their clothing is red, white and blue like the flag and they usually wear a pattern with stars and stripes. This year my family will celebrate the 4th of July in my mom´s hometown in VT (Vermont). We will take part in a morning fun run and then watch the parade. While we watch the parade, I will get to run and collect candy that the parade marchers throw. When we are not in the U.S.A for the 4th of July, we still celebrate the holiday with a barbeque with good friends. Huh? What do these words mean? Declaration: A formal statement. Independence: Living by your own rules. Revolutionary war: a war based on people wanting change. 23 FUN FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD! Learn about games to play at school taken from different countries around the world! Researcher & Designer: Ali, grade 5 One thing that stays constant despite rule changes, is that during each possession on one side of the net, a team can only have three contacts with the ball. The ideal sequence of contacts is usually a pass, a set and a hit—even the terminology has changed over the years. These skills were traditionally called bump, set and spike. No player can ever make contact with the ball twice in a row, and the ball cannot be caught or carried over the net. A block is not considered as part of a hit.. Each play starts off with a serve. The server steps behind the line at the very back of the court, called the end line, and has freedom to serve from wherever he or she pleases as long as the foot does not touch or cross the line. If the server’s foot crosses the end line, it is considered a foot fault, and results in a side-out—a change in possession of the ball. Watch the video below for more instructions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9g7nYQv-kPM What’s the difference between indoor and beach volleyball? A major difference is the number of players on the court. Beach volleyball has two players on a team. Indoor volleyball has six. She has another talent besides being an inspirational teacher! Mataji grew up watching her parents and her only brother, paint and sketch. In the Philippines, her father would let her meet artists in their home studios when she was about seven years old; and her mother would mentor her on sketching female faces. When she was in middle school, she attended an art summer workshop and took a six-month course in architectural drafting, that had components of fine arts, calligraphy etc. At that time, she would get lost for hours in the sweeping energy of creating something (oil painting) in her bedroom. She was thirteen, when all she wanted to do was to paint. It was not until she was thirty six, that she picked up the brush again when she saw acrylic paints and canvases for sale in a hobby shop near her home in Sweden. She posted some her first acrylic paintings on Facebook, with excitement and nervousness. A relative in Guam saw her portrait of her daughter and offered to buy it. From then on, she started putting up her art for sale and hasn't stopped painting since then. Mataji currently lives with her loving Indian husband in South India with their beautiful eleven year old daughter, Aaliaa, who loves abstract paintings and also sells her artworks online. Mataji has a degree in Psychology and Masters in Teaching; and has worked as a Program Coordinator/Teacher in international schools in Norway, Sweden, Botswana and India. Her love for travel inspires her art and viceversa. Her travels in western Europe, North America, Southern and Northern Africa, South and Southeast Asia have inspired her to build a travel series, in addition to her 'Family Love' series. Her 'Family Love’ series hopes to inspire families to re-unite in love and be truly present with each other. Some of her works are currently in private collections in the USA, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Norway, India and the Philippines. I think it is completely fine for kids (A few emotionally intense scenes) Rating: 8.5/10 (IMDb), 86% (Rotten Tomatoes) Directors: Aamir Khan, Amole Gupte Stars: Darsheel Safary, Aamir Khan, Tanay Chheda Genre: Drama, Family An eight year old boy is thought to be lazy and a troublemaker, until the new art teacher has the patience and compassion to discover the real problem behind his struggles in school. Like Stars on Earth is an amazing film about a Ishaan (Darsheel Safary) who is unaware that he is suffering from dyslexia (a learning disorder). His family and teachers mistake his learning disorder as an excuse for not studying and his lack of interest in studies. Though unable to concentrate in studies, he has amazing art skills for his age, and his imagination is beyond what others can think. Fortunately, an art teacher (Aamir Khan) discovers his talents and helps him to re-discover his talents. The movie is heartfelt, and has amazing performance from its actors, Darsheel Safary and Aamir Khan. I have watched this movie multiple times, but it never ceases to amaze, and move me. In the end, the movie is all about friendship, discovering your talents and abilities and helping each other. The movie also strengthens the concept that “every child is special”, and will also make you believe this as well. Overall, it is one of the most touching and thoughtful films I have ever seen. The movie is not available on Netflix and Viaplay, but can be found with English subtitles on YouTube. 28 inspiration Writers: Hanna and Amanda, grade 10 "Each day means a new 24 hours. Other animals (carnivore) Average life span in the wild: Up to 50 years Wingspan size: 2 to 3.4 m Weight: Up to 10 kg wingspan Albatrosses have the longest wingspan of any bird—up to 3.4 meters! The wandering albatross is the biggest of around two dozen different species. Albatrosses use their great wingspans to ride the ocean winds and sometimes to glide for hours without rest or even moving their wings. They also float on the sea's surface, though the position makes them easy prey for animals that live in the sea. DIET Albatrosses feed mainly on squid or groups of fish, but are familiar to mariners because they sometimes follow ships in hopes of eating food handed to them or rubbish. Albatrosses drink salt water. Life span These birds can live for a very long time! As long as 50 years of age. They are rarely seen on land and gather only to breed, at which time they form large groups (colonies) on remote islands. Risk of extinction Some albatross species were heavily hunted for feathers that were used as down and in the manufacture of women's hats. There are 21 albatross species recognized by IUCN (international union for conservation of nature). These species are on their red list as 19 are threatened, and the other two are "near threatened". The IUCN considers three species critically endangered: the Amsterdam albatross,Tristan albatross and the waved albatross. One of the main threats is commercial fishing, as the albatrosses and other seabirds—which will readily feed on the sea bait become hooked on the lines and drown. An estimated 100,000 albatross per year are killed this way. 31 GRADE 4 UNIT PRESENTATION climate change: drawing by bryan GRADE 6 EXHIBTION PRESENTATION IN ARENDAL CENTRE W W W E E E L L L L L L D D D O O O N N N E E E GRADE 6 32 COMMUNITY TALK Reporters: Farai and Rayyan, grade 4 The transition from high school to further studies is a significant mile stone Our Reporters interviewed some students to find out their reflections on the following question.
