A Look at Your Return On Investment
2 0 0 9 — 2 0 1 0 ABA ROI Report A Look at Your Return On Investment The Voice of the Baking Industry What is ABA? The American Bakers Association (ABA) is the Washington, D.C.-based voice of the wholesale baking industry. The only trade association that advocates solely for the baking industry, ABA represents the interests of bakers before the U.S. Congress, federal agencies, state legislatures and regulatory authorities. 200 $70 Billion 500,000 ABA advocates on behalf of more than 200 companies – both wholesale baking companies and their suppliers. The baking industry generates more than $70 billion in economic activity annually. The baking industry employs close to half a million highly skilled people. ABA participates in programs that promote and educate consumers on the benefits of grain-based foods as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Our Mission Our Vision ABA is the advocate for a stronger and more prosperous baking industry by providing information, education and networking opportunities. ABA will pursue a government environment that promotes a robust baking industry. Who Do We Represent? ABA members produce wholesome, nutritious, baked products for America’s families: bread, rolls, biscuits, crackers, cookies, doughnuts, cakes, snack cakes, muffins, biscotti, bagels, tortillas, bread sticks, pies, croissants, cupcakes, cereal, cheesecakes... Multiplying ABA’s Effectiveness Table of Contents Our country and industry face a multitude of challenges. Never before in the history of ABA have we seen so many significant issues that could impact our bottom lines. The ABA team in Washington has worked around the clock to head off some very costly initiatives such as card check, cap and trade, food safety, and yes, even health care. While health care was eventually rammed through Congress and signed into law, it should not be overlooked that the final bill was altered to mitigate some extremely onerous provisions. Obesity vs. Hunger - The Two Faces of Nutrition . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6-7 While much of ABA’s work has been defensive, ABA has promoted the positive benefits of our wholesome, nutritional and fun products. ABA members and staff have educated policymakers on the importance of healthy, well-balanced lifestyles. The participation from ABA members has been very strong. RiseToAction.org . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9 As we look forward to the rest of 2010, we anticipate even more activity in Washington, especially by the regulatory and enforcement agencies with which bakers must contend. We also face increasing demands from consumers and customers, for which we will need to rely on all our industry partners to meet. ABA continues to provide the forum for developing industry solutions and exchange of information to strengthen the entire industry. Year in Review . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4-5 Dietary Guidelines . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7 American Bakers PAC . . . . . . . . . . . 8 Congressional Outreach Map . 10-11 Commodity Volatility . . . . . . . . . . . 12 Food Safety . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 13 Executive Leadership Development Committeee . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 14 To continue to be successful in policy deliberations and industry solutions, ABA members will need to increase their participation at all levels. We also need to attract those companies that reap the benefits of ABA but are not at the table. This will increase the effectiveness and bandwidth of ABA. There is plenty of room at the ABA table for bakers of all sizes and from all product segments. It is through the full participation of the entire industry that we can multiply ABA’s effectiveness. ABA Meetings = Wealth of Info . . . . . 15 Finally, 2010 has two very important dates looming. Sept. 26-29 is the triennial IBIE in Las Vegas. The industry will be uniting to learn, network and innovate. Nov. 2 is Election Day. As we well know, it is the opportunity for the people, including bakers, to express their opinions about the direction of the country. It is the opportunity to maximize our individual effectiveness. The market is not working properly – it is not responding to fundamental supply and demand factors, but instead to the investment strategies of index funds. The wheat market was never meant to be an investment tool for index funds but a regulated forum for farmers, food producers and other legitimate end users to buy and sell needed food and feed supplies. What is ABA Doing About It You Ask? July 2009 – Commodity and Agricultural Policy Committee (CAPC) Chairman Hayden Wands, Sara Lee Corp., testified before the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations regarding the impact of index funds on the wheat markets. August 2009 – ABA submitted comments to Commodities Future Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Gary Gensler urging the CFTC to implement contract limits on index funds. September 2009 – Hayden Wands, CAPC Vice Chairman Mark Worthey, Flowers Foods; and Shawn Dailey, J.M. Smucker Co., meet with CFTC Commissioners Jill Sommers and Bart Chilton to discuss market volatility. September 2009 – Members of CAPC visit with members of Congress to discuss legislative solutions to market volatility. October 2009 – Mark Worthey attends the CFTC Agricultural Advisory Committee Meeting in Washington, D.C. MARCH 2010 – ABA submits new data to CFTC regarding the ongoing problem with extreme market volatility. April 2010 – ABA staff and Hayden Wands meet with CFTC Chairman Gensler and Commissioners Michael Dunn and Scott O’Malia regarding new signs of market dysfunction. 12 Hayden Wands, Sara Lee Corp., testifies before the U.S. Senate. ABA submitted its white paper as part of the Senate HELP Committee record as hearings were held in late November 2009. In January 2010, a food safety delegation from the ABA Food Technical Regulatory Affairs Committee comprised of large national and medium-sized bakeries met with FDA for a bakery risk assessment to develop mitigation strategies for the industry. Through this assessment, ABA was able to determine processing nodes that may need special safeguards. This assessment template created a new resource for ABA members’ food safety plans.
