HELLFIRE 2010 Is Finally In the Books!!
September, 2010 HELLFIRE 2010 Is Finally In the Books!! Possum Skinner takes Overall Cowboy Title Dew R. Dye goes 2 for 2, defends Overall Cowgirl Title Quitman, LA – The Jackson Hole Regulators hosted their 2nd annual Hellfire match at Slick McClade’s RW Firearms Shooting Range just south of Quitman, Louisiana. This year’s theme was a tribute to Lonesome Dove. As much as we love that book/movie, I gotta say, anyone who was lonesome this weekend must have been hiding behind a berm somewhere! Loads of friendly folks from all over Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, and other states came out to enjoy one of the premier matches Louisiana has to offer. We even had a partner who got lost and wandered all the way down from Fargo, North Dakota! Guess he was looking for the warmer weather. Tons of work had been done since last year to upgrade an already great shooting range. All that highway department work in the area came in handy as improvements were made to parking areas and berms. All that dirt from the road had to go somewhere, now didn’t it? – Volume 2, Issue 9 The side matches on Friday were the perfect warm-up. The long distance range hosted the big-bore and pistol caliber rifle competitions. Meanwhile, the cowboy range was just a poppin’ with gunfire. The Hellfire match takes your best overall time rather than just your first time, so folks are free to try again and again. That makes for lots of shooting and lots of fun! Another great thing about the side matches was the quality of the prizes. Mose and Bella Spencer put personalized embroidery on some really nice gun cases. That way the winners had something they could put to good use when they left. Miss Ivory presents Vaquero Jake with a personalized gun case as a prize for winning the Buckaroo Class Speed Rifle Side Match Saturday dawned clear and dry, perfect for Cowboy Action Shooting. More than a few folks remembered how last year the rain stopped just in time for the matches, but everything was still pretty muddy. Not so this year! We even had a cool front move in overnight Saturday so that Sunday was even better. Kaelyn Culpepper gave a stirring rendition of our national anthem as we saluted “Old Glory”. After a prayer for safety and good fellowship, we were ready to go! Our buddy “Fighting Joe” Spokes Wheeler got off the first shot of the match (and was rewarded for it at the banquet with an embroidered Hellfire cap – again courtesy of Mose and Bella). The posses all ran smoothly. I know this because once again, I had to shoot all the way through so I got to shoot with everybody who was there. What a great bunch of folks! Black Viper timing Free State on the Speed Pistol Side Match There was one problem I saw Cajun Ace, Freestate, Gumbo Bandit, and Texas Mac put on a though. It seems my buddy Black sharpshooting exhibition over these two days. Way to go fellers! Viper had lost so much weight Y’all wouldn’t happen to be giving lessons, now would you? One more interesting thing about this match – it was scored as a total recently that when he went to put time match. I don’t know how you feel about it but all the folks I asked his pistol back in the holster on about it liked it better that way than the rank point method. Stage 2, he missed and dropped In the end, Possum Skinner again showed what a gunfighter on his that gun straight on the ground! game can do by claiming Overall Cowboy. Smokey Shane came in Stage DQ just because he was second. Dew R. Dye claimed Overall Cowgirl honors for the second year now so comparatively skinny that in a row. That lady can flat-out shoot, y’all! Louisiana Lady was runner his leather wasn’t in the same up on the women’s side. place he was accustomed to. All in all, it was again a great match and I can’t wait till next year! Don’t you just hate it when that --- Hightower happens! J Saturday night was the banquet.
