The season got off to a rocky start with warm weather and not much snow. Christmas day will be remembered for record breaking high temps. But all that changed with one really nice snowstorm around December 29th, followed by some good snowmaking temps. We went from lots of brown to lots of white in just 24 hours. Everyone’s spirits took a huge upward turn. By the end of the week most of the main trails at the mountain were open. The whole East had been suffering from lack of snow, but we were in better shape than most areas. This resulted in several racing teams from Vermont and other areas making the long trek to Sugarloaf to find some training space. In December, and after the New Year. The season is shaping up to be a good one. As usual, lots of great events are happening at the mountain. The 66th annual ski club meeting was held at the Begin Room of the Carrabassett Public Library and was well attended. After the meeting, attendees enjoyed a slide show of an historical nature, and were also treated to a presentation about the new CVA/Ski Club/Sugarloaf Competition Center project. Thanks to a million dollar gift from the Bill & Joan Alfond Foundation, this long time dream is becom- Early to mid-70s – Sugarloaf Mothers Alpine Racing Team – S M A R T; these energetic mothers of young racers are seen gearing up for the annual Easter parade. During the month of December alone almost $300,000 was raised from over 60 generous Sugarloafers. The new building has stirred up a lot of excitement among Ski Club members who want to be a part of it. Lots of naming opportunities are available, so send me an email or give me a call if you would like to learn how you can help. Before too long the sunny days of March and April will be upon us and the Jean Luce building BBQ season will begin. I look forward to seeing many of you on the hill and at many of our events. Mark your calendars for March 19 so you will not miss the return of North of Nashville to our annual Snowball. The 2-run Giant Slalom format fun race is held each spring with proceeds going to the Sugarloaf Regional Ski Educational Foundation’s McKay/Waddle Scholarship Fund. The fund was established to honor their memory and to help young ski and snowboard competitors defray the costs of travel expenses and entry fees. The fund was started in the early 1980’s by the families of Dan McKay and Mike Waddle, two young Alpine racers who died tragically in separate accidents. Dan and Mike were good friends as well as competitors who trained with the Sugarloaf Junior Racing program and raced throughout the state of Maine as well as New England. They exemplified the “Spirit of Sugarloaf” with their determination and style. Both Mike and Hanging out on McKay/Waddle race day in 2014. Dan died in a mountaineering accident and Mike was the victim of a commercial fishing tragedy. It continues to be important to the families of these courageous and crazy young men that their legacies live on. The McKay-Waddle Scholarship Fund was established in the spring of 1982 with a fun race on Lower Competition Hill, and has been an annual event ever since. So, please come out and enjoy a few hours of racing, and a great BBQ lunch at the Jean Luce building. All prizes for competitors will be randomly drawn in bib-draw style, and the first 100 folks who sign up will receive a uniquely designed commemorative t-shirt. Sign up will be at the Competition Center from 8:00am - 9:30am on the morning of the race. See you there. Mid-week Socials Charlie and Diane Copeland at one of our monthly midweek socials March 8 will be our next Tuesday Social, and it is scheduled to be in the Widowmaker loft from 4:30 to 6:00pm. Now the trails are just right for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking. This winter, they’re looking forward to hosting cross country ski racers for the 8th Annual Adventure Ski Race & Tour, a point-to-point race/tour. This year’s race will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2016 and will feature three distances: 20K, 35K and 55K. Participants in the 35K have the option to spend the night before the race at Flagstaff Hut, while all 55K participants are required to stay at Grand Falls Hut the night before, due to the remote, early start. For those who want to join in the fun but not compete, there is an untimed tour option that’s popular with casual skiers. Volunteers are always appreciated for this fun event; if you’re interested in helping out, please contact Sue Davis: sdavis@mainehuts. org. The huts and trails are open to the public year-round at no cost to day visitors. On Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30-1:30, you can venture out to a hut for lunch. They sell soups, salads, and baked goods that are made from scratch on-site, and there’s a great selection of beer and wine. If you spend the night Winter scenery on the trails at a hut, all three meals are included in the price. This is a great deal for locals (residents of Franklin or Somerset County), since they stay half price on Tuesdays. For an extra fee, you can even have all your gear transported to the hut so you can pack light. Maine Huts & Trails is a non-profit organization based in Kingfield that operates 80 miles of multi-use recreational trails and four off-the-grid backcountry lodges. For more information, check out the website: www.mainehuts.org or visit the Kingfield office, open every day from 9-5. C.O. This substantial commitment from the Foundation will help make this long-awaited new facility a reality and honors the longstanding partnership among the Sugarloaf Ski Club, CVA and Sugarloaf. The 11,000 sq. ft. Competition Center will be located on the same location as the current facility but will be expanded. The key building design tenets are functionality, durability, beauty and financial prudence. The Center will include day lodge space, tuning and waxing facilities, locker rooms, a trainers’ room, meeting space and offices. The building will honor and draw upon the area’s passion for and commitment to competition while incorporating contemporary lines enhanced with traditional Maine materials. Construction on the new $2 million facility is set to begin in May 2016 and will be complete by November 2016, ensuring that the new building will be fully operational and ready for the U.S. Alpine Championships, which return to Sugarloaf in March 2017. g arloaf “On behalf of CVA, the Sugarloaf Ski Club and Sugarloaf, I would like to express our tremendous gratitude to the Bill and Joan Alfond Foundation for their extraordinary support of this project. Competition has been at the heart of our organizations from the very beginning and this new facility will allow us to expand this tradition, bolstering Sugarloaf’s standing as a world-class competition venue, providing a new home for the Sugarloaf Ski Club and offering a warm and welcoming hub for the next generation of athletes and their families.” -Earle Morse, CVA Board Chairman “On behalf of my family and the Foundation, I am very pleased to support this impressive partnership that is bringing a new Competition Center to Sugarloaf. Not only will the new facility continue to inspire Maine youth to raise their aspirations through athletics but it will also be an important economic driver for the region.” -Bill Alfond, President of the Bill and Joan Alfond Foundation 10 • Village West #13 • Carrabassett Valley, Maine 04947 • 207.237.6955 • www.sugarloafskiclub.com • Email: [email protected] Sugarloaf Ski Club News • www.sugarloafskiclub.com • Email: [email protected] LEAVE YOUR TRACKS ON THIS EXCITING MOMENT IN SUGARLOAF HISTORY!
