Speciale Giubileo per Gruppi INGLESE VERTICALE
ORVIETO Todi and Bolsena ITINERARIES AND PROPOSALS fo r GROUPS On occasion of the 750th Anniversary of Bolsena's Eucharistic Miracle (1263) and the "Transiturus" Bull by Pope Urban IV (1264) the Apostolic Penitentiary, by mandate of the Supreme Pontiff Benedict XVI, confirmed in writing on 13 March 2012, has authorized the celebration of an extra-ordinary Eucharistic Jubilee during which the faithful and pilgrims may obtain plenary Indulgence, like in any Jubilee year. The Eucharistic Jubilee will begin in January 2013 January 2013 with the opening of the Holy Door in both the Cathedral of Orvieto and Bolsena and will finish in November 2014 when the Holy Doors will be closed. Orvieto’s citizens sponsored the construction with their offerings, hoping to obtain indulgences by doing so. The façade, based on a drawing by Maitani, develops in a harmonic way both vertically and horizontally and is made even more precious by the splendid rose window, made by sculptor Andrea Orcagna. Inside the Cathedral one can admire the Chapel where the Holy Corporal is hosted (decorated by the frescoes by Ugolino di Prete Ilario and the presence of the Reliquary in translucent enamel by Ugolino di Vieri) and the Chapel of San Brizio, hosting the splendid cycle of frescoes by Luca Signorelli. The Co-Cathedral of the Most Holy Annunciation is Todi's most important place of worship. It was erected in the twelfth century on the site of a former building dating back to the Roman Age. Works finished in the fourteenth century and the Co-Cathedral underwent restoration several times. The façade dates back to the thirteenth century, while works on the precious rose window began in 1515. The glass walls are not the original ones and date back to the eighteenth century restoration works. The main door, with pointed arches, consists in four panels at the top (showing the Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel, Saint Peter and Saint Paul) and six panels at the bottom, added in 1639. The thirteenth century bell tower stands to the right of the facade. SAINT CHRISTINA'S IN BOLSENA THE COLLEVALENZA SANCTUARY The Collegiate Church consecrated to the Saint dates back to the eleventh century, but its facade was made again in the fifteenth century at the behest of Cardinal de'Medici, and was later modified; a polyptych panel and a ceramic ciborium, both dating back to the fifteenth century, are kept inside the church. Going through a white marble Romanesque door, one can access a small chapel first, and the Miracle Chapel afterwards, where, in the main altar, three sacred stones, soiled with the blood of the Eucharistic Miracle are venerated. A fourth stone is also kept in the beautiful Reliquary made by M. Ravelli from Orvieto. From the Collegiate Church you may access the Cave of Saint Christina (made in the fourth century), where the Saint's sepulchre and Christian catacombs were found. The Sanctuary of Merciful Love is an imposing modern building, designed by architect Julio Lafuente. The light inside the sanctuary creates and atmosphere that induces meditation. Consecrated in 1965, the Sanctuary is dedicated to the congregation of Nuns and Priests named ‘of the Merciful Love", founded by Spanish Mother Speranza. Artist Cullot Valera made the large Crucifix in polychrome wood. Mother Speranza had the Chapel of Merciful Love made in 1955; the Sanctuary received canonical approbation from the then Bishop of Todi Alfonso Maria De Sanctis on 30 September 1959. The story of the Eucharistic Miracle: It was 1263 when a Bohemian priest, Peter from Prague, tormented by the doubt whether the consecrated host held Christ’s body, went on a pilgrimage to Rome Like many other pilgrims, Peter followed the Francigen Route, the renown Medieval road that, from France, included long stretches of the ancient Cassia Consular Road. Passing through Bolsena, he offered to officiate a mass. During the liturgy, red blood prodigiously spurted from the host and tinged the altar stones and Corporal. From that moment on, certainly the priest ceased to have doubts. The event immediately gave rise to amazement and admiration amidst the population and became a subject of detailed observation on the part of the church authorities. Pope Urban IV resided in the city of Orvieto at the time, for safety reasons. He ordered the Corporal and the Host, partly become flesh, should be transferred to Orvieto and entrusted Orvieto's Bishop Giacomo with the task. The meeting between the joyful Orvietani and the bishop on his way back from Bolsena took place by the Bridge of Rio Chiaro, near the city, and from there the procession went on solemnly and reached the Cathedral, where the Pope showed the holy relic to the public. The following year, the same Pontiff Urban IV – who had already gone on a solemn procession on 19 June 1263, carrying the relic of Bolsena's Holy Corporal around the town – with his Transiturus bull, dated 11 August 1264, established the festivity of the Corpus Domini (Corpus Christi) extending it to the whole Church and set it on the Thursday following the Octave of Pentecost.
