Red Cross Swim Preschool
The City of Cornwall’s Department of Planning, Parks and Recreation is proud to offer the Red
Cross Swim Program. We hope your child will love his or her swimming and water safety
experience. The following chart is organized to help you understand when your child fits in the
Red Cross Swim selection of levels. Placement in the Red Cross Swim program depends on many
variables including age, skill proficiency, previous experience and readiness. Talk to your
lifeguard to determine the best Red Cross Swim level for your child.
LEVEL 1: Starfish (4-18 months)
An introductory class for babies and their parent or caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be
able to hold their head up. The goal of this orientation to water class is to experience buoyancy,
movement, entries, songs and play in the water.
LEVEL 2: Duck (18-30 months)
For toddlers or older babies with a parent or caregiver. Toddlers build confidence while enjoying
the water through games, songs and active water play.
LEVEL 3: Sea Turtle (30-36 months parented or 3-5 years unparented)
A transitional level for preschoolers and their parents. Parents can gradually transfer the
preschoolers to the care of the Instructor or for children 3-5 years old who have not previously
taken swimming lessons. Sea Turtle is where they will enter the program. This level develops
skills in swimming, glides, floating and builds awareness of deep water and safe entries.
LEVEL 4: Salamander (3-5 years)
Preschoolers actively learn new swimming skills including assisted floats and glides through
games and songs. The fun includes learning to jump into chest deep water.
LEVEL 5: Sunfish (3-5 years)
Assisted by an Instructor, preschoolers work on stroke and skills progressions. Learning also
focuses on good judgment in, on and around the water and entries and floats in deep water.
LEVEL 6: Crocodile (3-5 years)
Preschoolers start independent glides and kicking in deep water. Endurance is built through
increasing distance for front and back swims. Swimmers learn about the dolphin kick and try
synchro skills in the water.
LEVEL 7: Whale (3-5 years)
In Whale, children will learn to swim independently and participate in team games. Preschoolers
will increase their distance and improve skills in front and back swims. Swimmers also learn
about throwing assists to help another person in the water.
6
Red Cross Swim Kids
The Red Cross Swim Kids Program follows a 10 level program for children 6 years of age and up.
Level 1
This is an entry level for children ready to move in shallow water. This level provides an orientation to the water and
the pool area and introduces floats and glides with kicks. Children build their endurance by improving distance.
Level 2
This level helps the child build skills in front and back swims. Children are introduced to deep water activities and
proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Endurance is built on flutter kicking with assisted glides.
Level 3
This level provides an introduction to front crawl as well as the foundation for making wise choices on where and
when to swim. Diving is introduced and children will work on floats and changing direction. Endurance is achieved by
building strength in flutter kick and a 15-metre swim.
Level 4
The front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed. Children work on kneeling dives,
surface support and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built
through a 25-metre swim.
Level 5
Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. Children try striding dives and receiving
an introduction to safe boating skills. Endurance is developed through dolphin kick and a 50-metre swim.
Level 6
Front and back crawl continue to be refined as the elementary back stroke is newly introduced. Children are also
introduced to safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water and the front dive.
Endurance is built through a 75-metre swim.
Level 7
Level 7 continues to build skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke and introduces
whip kick on the front. Children learn about airway and breathing obstructions, and participate in timed treading
water for increasing endurance. Endurance is built through timed treading water and a 150-metre swim.
Level 8
Level 8 provides an introduction to the breast stroke, feet first surface dives, and rescue entries. Children learn about
the dangers of open water, hypothermia, and the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults.
Endurance is built on the dolphin kick and a 300-metre swim.
7
Level 9
Front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke and breast stroke continue to be refined. In this level children are
encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks for fitness. They also work on head-first shallow dives and
standing dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a
400-metre swim.
Level 10
Further refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warm-up/cool down stroke for
fitness. Children learn about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives.
Endurance is built using dolphin kick and butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim.

Cornwall Civic Complex and Convention Centre
The hub of convention activities in the city is the Cornwall Civic Complex and Convention Centre. The
complex is among the largest and most modern convention centres in Eastern Ontario, with facilities to
accommodate meetings, sporting events, concerts, trade show and much more.
The Ed Lumley Arena boasts a superior infrastructure including a variety of lighting options, state of the
art rink boards and seating for over 5,800. Over the years it has played host to NHL hockey and
professional ice skating championships as easily as it has welcomed such international stars as
Nickelback, Great Big Sea, Alice Cooper and Celebration on Ice. Trade shows, circuses and the Special
Olympics are just a sampling of the diverse events that have taken place in this 150,000 sq.ft. climate
controlled facility.
However, the Civic Complex is much more than a simple arena. With meeting room combinations
totaling an additional 20,000 sq.ft. the Complex also serves as a major convention centre in Eastern
Ontario. Situated in a picturesque waterfront setting at the edge of Cornwall's downtown shopping
district, the convention centre can easily accommodate events ranging from small meetings to large
weddings and conferences. Attached to the east end of the Civic Complex is the Cornwall Aquatic
Centre. This beautiful facility houses a world class pool along with a water slide, toddler leisure pool and
whirlpool.
Together, the Ed Lumley Arena, the Cornwall Aquatic Centre and its sister convention facilities combine
to make the Civic Complex... The Coolest Facility in Cornwall.

Leisure Programming
The City of Cornwall's Department of
Planning, Parks and Recreation is
committed to recreation and leisure
activities of all kinds for the entire family.
The Arts & Culture section was established
to serve the entire community by helping to
develop arts programming for all ages and
abilities. The goal is to tap into the talents
and interests of local artists and cultural
organizations
and
encourage
their
involvement
in
community
wide
programming and special activities that
everyone can enjoy. The Arts & Culture
office is responsible for a wide range of arts
programming with many art related classes
for children, teens and adults. The office is
also responsible for P.A. Day Camps, Winter
Break Camps, March Break Madness
Program, Arts in the Park at the Bandshell,
the Summer Playground Program and the
Kinsmen/Kinette Summer Day Camps.
The Department of Planning, Parks and
Recreation designs and implements
programming in a variety of areas in Leisure
Arts. Part-time instructors conduct several
classes and workshops throughout the
course of the year at different municipal
facilities. The program is divided into four
sessions: Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.
29
Youth Programs
Children of all ages are encouraged to tap into their
imaginations and explore their creative sides while
creating projects to show off at home. Classes range
from crafting, to painting, to sculpting...
Adult Programs
Adults explore, learn and take home new skills at
our daytime and evening programs, such as pottery
and watercolour painting. Courses change
seasonally and are designed with new trends in
mind.
No time to commit? Try a specialty
workshop!
Specialty workshops are designed to be a 2 or 3
hour special opportunity for children, adults or the
entire family to enjoy group activities focusing on a
seasonal theme or specialized art activity. We even
offer family workshops where family members work
on a project together!
Arts in the Park
The performing arts come to life each summer in
beautiful Lamoureux Park. Entering its twenty-fifth
season in summer 2009, Arts in the Park is a series of
free, family friendly, live theatrical and musical
entertainment. Held outdoors at the Lion's Club
Bandshell, this summer concert series is sure to have
something for everyone.
After a highly successful 2009 season, we are eagerly
anticipating the summer to come! You can be sure to
see some of your old favourites but be on the lookout
for fresh new faces to grace the stage in 2010.
Be sure to look for the summer concert listings in
the Arts in the Park flyer, available in the spring
of 2010. The summer's line-up will also be
posted online at www.cornwall.ca. Join our

It began as a hobby, making fun of a big dumb world. Luckily, the world is still dumb and
The Arrogant Worms (Mike McCormick, Chris Patterson and Trevor Strong) still have
plenty to sing about. The shows are fast, furious and family friendly. The wit is quick, the
satire is biting and the musicianship is second to none. Their appeal has earned them

Cornwall Concert Series Presents
The Schumann Letters
German composer Robert Schumann fell in love with Clara Wieck while studying piano
with her father. Her father didn't approve. Robert and Clara exchanged some 20,000
letters during their long courtship. Eventually, after a long legal battle with her father,
Robert was successful and married his beloved Clara. This special program uses some of
those letters, and some of the Schumann's music - Clara was a composer, too - to
portray their life and love.

Derek Edwards – It’s A Blunderful Life
Derek Edwards’ hilarious ruminations on his Blunderful Life is a wildly entertaining
comedic expose by “a virtuoso at the peak of performance”. With a wit and will forged
in Northern Canada, he guides us through the pivotal life moments we’re all confronted
by in our 20s, 30s, 40s and on. Snapshots of the past and the world around us, skewed
and imbued with a small town charm and tempered with an inimitable quirky
perspective. Is it really wrong to extend a misspent youth that extra 30 years? It’s A
Blunderful Life! - common sense and an inspired sense of the ridiculous.

The Cornwall Curling Centre is one of the oldest curling organizations in Ontario. It was

events in the past and in 1984 we hosted the Uniroyal World Junior Championships.
In 2004, the Cornwall Curling Centre moved to its brand new facility after a decade of
fundraising. The new $2.2 Million building now houses 6 sheets of ice, a beautiful
lounge, new commercial kitchen, and full locker room facilities.
The Cornwall Curling Centre is host to over 500 registered curlers, with a vibrant seniors

Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall & SDG
Henry Street at Thirteenth Street 613-938-4999
The Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG is an evolving organization. As a new member of the BGC of
Canada, we integrated within the local movement a 10-year old Youth Centre, renovated the building
and developed activities to adhere to the programming pillars of the national organization. We have
also acquired a historic church property (which we are in the process of refurbishing) to reach more
young people, enrich and expand programs, and house our administrative offices.
In essence, the BGC of Cornwall/SDG provides an environment that builds upon young peoples’
assets and gives them a sense of belonging, care and positive relationships. Our CORE VALUES of
inclusion and opportunity, respect and belonging, empowerment, collaboration and speaking out
defines us as a movement and are a standard against which all programs are measured.
New programs begin Fall 2009.
