The following students represent our Boomerang Award recipients in April for Asset #25,
Reading for Pleasure. Young person reads for pleasure most days of the week, either alone,
with family members or with friends:
Boomerang Youth Recognition Award
Elementary
Elementary: Mia Schnaph, 2nd grade, Warwick Elementary. Mia was nominated by
several individuals, including family, her classroom teacher, and the school librarian.
Mia has been an avid reader since she first discovered books. During her first week of
2nd grade she set a personal goal to read 100 books by the end of the school year and
is well on her way to completing her goal. Wherever she goes she always a book in
hand. She even shares her love of books by reading stories to her brother and facts
from non-fiction books. She asks her parents to read a book she has finished so they
can discuss the book together. Mia even started a long distance book club with her
grandmother. They are reading The Little House on the Prairie series together and
share their thoughts over the phone. Mia’s love of reading is inspiring.
Middle
Middle School: Kevin Weitzel, 8th grade, Unami Middle School. Kevin is very
passionate about reading. Most of the time, you will find Kevin reading or talking
about a book he just read. Parents of other students report that their child wasn’t
much of a reader until they talked to him, and because he is so passionate about
reading, they started reading and now enjoy it. Classmates say the same thing to him,
that he made it sound so interesting so they decided to give it a try! Since he reads so
much he has become very knowledgeable about the latest books that are coming out;
he gets stopped quite often by friends and even strangers at bookstores for
suggestions of a book to read or purchase. He has joined a few on-line reading and
writing groups where they discuss current books and authors and write their own
stories. He truly appreciates what he can get out of reading--a topic that starts a
conversation, brings you to another world, gives you something to think about, or simply just makes you
happy.
High School
High School: Meghan Lawrence, 12th grade, Central Bucks East. Meghan is
always ready to enthusiastically tell you about a book that she finished reading. In
class, anytime there is a free moment, she has a book out, reading intently. She is able
to contribute a great deal to class discussions on the novels they are reading. She works
extremely hard at developing her reading skills. She has participated in Reading
Olympics but has read many more books than required. She even chose Reading
Olympics as the subject of her graduation project. She was nominated by 4 separate
teachers for this award!
Thanks for all those wonderful nominations. Our May Asset, the last of this year, is #31 Restraint. Young
person can identify, regulate, and control his/her behaviors and emotions in healthy ways, particularly
in stressful or unstructured situations.
NOMINATIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO YOUR SCHOOL THE WEEK OF MAY 21ST.

Winner of Lenape Idol 2012
Cole Magura
We had a fun April, with
our Words and Music Café on Friday April 27th at the
Zen Den Coffee Boutique in Doylestown. We
featured two local high school poets, Sami Mineroff
and the Bucks County High School Poet Laureate,
Stina Stannik.
The next day we performed on the main stage at
Central Park, Doylestown Township, at Healthy Kids
Day, Get Up, Get Out and Play. Music filled the air
from 11-3 pm. Guest performers included some of the
finalists from this year’s Lenape Idol competition,
including the ultimate winner, Cole Magura.
Lenape Idol Finalist 2012
Mariah Praul
Following the Idol finalists we heard middle school
band and Y2C favorite, Pluto’s Echo, followed by a
star from CB West’s Oklahoma, Kevin Huff and local
guitar player and wonderful singer, Tom Varner. Last
on the list was the big brass sound of the Cherry Lane
Band, an intergenerational group made up of local
high school musicians extraordinaire and some very
talented adult musicians. They play lots of classic
rock, from Steely Dan to Bruce Springsteen. Looking
forward to the next performances of all of these
talented students and adults.

National Take-Back
Initiative Results
On Saturday, April 28th, throughout Buck County, we collected our highest totals to
date: 4,396.33 lbs.
lbs of prescription and over-the-counter medications (1,528.05 collected from permanent
drop boxes and 2,868.28 lbs. collected at dropdrop-off sites).
sites)
This amounts to over 2 tons of medications safely removed from medicine cabinets and the risk of diversion
as well as kept out of our water supply. We received very positive feedback from volunteers at our sites, and
additional police departments have expressed interest in obtaining permanent drop boxes. Many expressed
gratitude for this opportunity to safely dispose of their medications.
Permanent Drop Boxes:
Let’s keep up the good work
in disposing prescription drugs
properly and keep our youth
and water supply safe.
