AWARD - WINNING JOURNALIST/COOKBOOK AUTHOR JANET ZAPPALA TO HEADLINE IN THE
KITCHEN FOR CELEBRITY CHEF & WAITER GALA ALONG WITH
DEVYN RUSH, THE “SINGING WAITRESS” FROM THIS SEASON OF AMERICAN IDOL
Now in its fourth year, CB Cares Celebrity Chef & Waiter Gala will be held on Sunday, May 22,
2011 at the Doylestown Country Club. This signature event is one of the very first sustainable
fundraisers in the region. Most of the evening’s provisions will come from within a 10 –15 mile
radius of the table. According to CB Cares’ Executive Director, Kimberly Cambra, “It is our hope for each vendor to only use a
little less than a gallon of gas to contribute to the event. Where else can you partake in the most exciting gastronomic event in
Bucks County while supporting youth & parent programs and our local farmers at the same time?
When your name is CB Cares – Cares begins from the ground up.”
Headlining in the kitchen will be Emmy award-winning/cookbook author Janet Zappala, who will create the
main course for the evening’s menu with inspiration from her latest cookbook, My Italian Kitchen. When not in
the kitchen during the gala, she will be adding to the fun and camaraderie amongst the guests in the dining
room. In addition to her cookbook, Janet also hosts a health & fitness webisode called Wealth of Health on
JanetZappala.tv.
The evening begins with a VIP (Very Important Producer) reception orchestrated by Earl’s Bucks County’s
general manager, David Zuckerman who will showcase three local farmers to create tasting stations with
product from these VIPs. During the reception guests will have the opportunity to peruse the Epicurean
Auction Tables (E.A.T) to bid on items such as a 5 day/4 night land package to the Wyndham Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa in
Puerto Rico, Phillies Spring Training Clearwater package, and an array of gourmet wares. The flavorful fun
begins with a three-course wine paired dinner served up by community leaders, elected officials, and local
celebrities like New Hope native, Devyn Rush, who comes to the table via this season of American Idol and
dubbed the “singing waitress”. Gala guests attending can anticipate their celebrity waiters will “aim to please”
as they will be hard at work earning tips doing whatever it takes for the good of the cause and “serving the
community”. The evening concludes with a Sweet Ending Soiree, with a selection of locally made sweets and
treats in addition to presenting the “Most Appreciated Waiter” award to the celebrity waiter who earns the most
tips. Defending her title from last year will be Jen Walton. For more information see page 4.

Boomerang Youth Recognition Award
April’s Asset of the Month was #25 Reading for Pleasure. Young person reads for pleasure most days of the
week, either alone, with family members, or with friends. Every school in the Central Bucks School District
sent in a nomination this month for a record number of 461nominations!
Elementary: Cameron Jones, 5th grade, Cold Spring Elementary.
Cam was nominated by 5 of his family members and one neighbor. Cameron enjoys
many different aspects of reading including expanding his understanding of the world
around him, “quenching” his thirst for knowledge, pure joy and entertainment, and the
challenge of reading multiple books. He serves as a model to his entire family who daily
experience Cam’s passion for reading. He is fond of recommending books and always has
a fact to share. When Cameron reads a book he travels to another place and truly experiences the adventure of the character. His love of reading began when he was only 2 ½
years old, when he begged his Mom to read more books. Presently he is never without a
book in his hand, even walking on the path home from school. His dream house includes a
room where there are floor to ceiling books in his very own library. His neighbor adds
that even at the movies or at a party, he brings a book, just in case! His best friend is his collection of books.
Middle School: Jackie Dixon, 9th grade, Tamanend.
This Boomerang Award recipient has taken advantage of her school library more than any other student in the
school. She has read 94 library books since becoming a Tamanend student this past
fall. Four different staff members recognized Jackie for this Asset. Inquisitive,
passionate, and diverse are all words that have been used to describe Jackie’s love of
reading. Jackie loves to escape in novels-she truly understands what it means to
become lost in a great book. She has been able to develop a group of friends who also
enjoy reading for pleasure. Her reading affects her writing, as well; her ideas and
development are creative and stylized whether it be poetry or prose. Jackie visits the
library almost on a daily basis to see what new books have arrived. It is never
surprising when she checks out 5 or 6 books on Friday and drops them in the return
slot on Monday morning. She enjoys reading for the sake of the information, for
getting involved in the story, and she finds relaxation and enjoyment in the pleasure of
reading.
High School: Victoria Langan, 12th grade, CB South.
What began as an interesting club to join with friends at Titus Elementary School has
continued throughout middle and high school. Reading Olympics was a starting point
for Tori. After completing all the Harry Potter books one summer, those around her
knew she truly enjoyed reading for pleasure. In middle school she was the student who
checked out a record number of books for the year. Even with a very busy and
complicated senior year, she always seems to find time to read a wide variety of books.
Tori has definitely inspired others to find time to read for pleasure.
May’s Asset is #30 Responsibility. Young person accepts and takes personal responsibility for his/her
behavior. Young person accepts and takes personal responsibility for their actions and decisions at home, and/or
at school, and/or in the community.
NOMINATIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO YOUR SCHOOL BY FRIDAY, MAY 20TH.

CB Cares’ “Mother’s Day Essay Contest”
Thank you

Thank you
Thank you
CB Cares would like to thank everyone who entered our “Mother’s Day Essay Contest.” We had
over 100 entries! The well deserving mother of the winning essay will receive the celebrity
treatment by attending the Celebrity Chef & Waiter Gala along with an auto detailing service from
Fred Beans & Autographed copy of Janet Zappala’s cookbook, My Italian Kitchen.
Winning authors and their mother will appear in the June Backpack Newsflash..
For the past 2 years, CB Cares has featured Asset #25-Reading for Pleasure in April. We do this for several reasons: the month ties
in with Reading Olympics, National Poetry Month, and the Michener’s Annual Celebration of Poetry for high school students, in
addition to other events at the local and national levels.
This month our Assets in Action column highlights several school activities which
tied in with this featured Asset:
Gayman Elementary's Friends of the Library Committee celebrated Asset # 25
Reading for Pleasure with a Pajama Party Book Swap. After choosing at least five
"new" books to take home, pajama-clad students listened to a few of their Principal's
favorite stories. To the children's delight, Mr. Finger also wore his favorite onesie
pj's to the event. All remaining books (1400!) were donated through CB Cares to
Rachel Fryatt who will be taking them to an inner-city charter school that experienced
a fire this past January.
Buckingham Elementary: Pictured is Melissa Yates, librarian at Buckingham Elementary, under the
school’s “Chain of Favorite Books.”
Tamanend: For the April Asset, all Tamanend Boomerang nominees were invited to star in their own READ
posters. These students were recognized by their peers, teachers, and our community as students who love to
read for pleasure. These posters are proudly being displayed throughout the halls of their school.
Kudos to these schools and all the other schools who helped us celebrate April’s Asset!

Hangin’ Out in the Borough
Last month, CB Cares was called upon to see if we could come together
to find a solution for teens hangin’ in the borough of Doylestown on First
Friday; especially now with the warmer weather the number of teens will
likely increase. On this month’s Parent Connections the guests are: Teen
Center Coordinator, Pat Kelly and from the School of Rock, Beca
Dunst. The guests talk about solutions for this growing concern, identify
some potential solutions such as the “free concerts” on First Friday at
School of Rock and the activities hosted by the CB Y’s Teen Center. To
learn more about what was discussed on Parent Connections tune in to:
