FROM THE PRESIDENT On behalf of the Dodge County Humane Society Board of Directors, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to all of our supporters, valued volunteers and donors. The Dodge County Humane Society has experienced a period of unprecedented growth which has greatly impacted the homeless animals in our care. Through the first four month of 2015, we have had 284 animals come through our doors. During that same period, 233 animals have been adopted into their forever homes. We have helped reunite 43 lost animals with their owners. As you can see, DCHS has been a busy place. As you can imagine, properly caring for the medical, physical and social needs of each of these animals is a daunting task. We are fortunate to have a strong volunteer base and great employees that take a special interest in each animal we rescue. We are always looking for more volunteers and our Saturday morning dog walking program is a great place to start! Thank you for supporting the Dodge County Humane Society and visit us soon if you are interested in adding a four legged family member. We have plenty of great dogs and cats that are waiting for someone to come and take them home! Ryan Vossekuil, Board President VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT When you come to DCHS and are looking to adopt one of our cats, Lacey is the person you want to meet! Lacey takes the time to get to know every cat. She also spends hours working with those cats that need a little extra attention to reach their potential. Lacey has successfully found homes for many of the cats that have found their way to DCHS. Her passion for cats is evident, and our adopters rave about how great she is to work with. Recently one of our adopters even named their new family member Lacey in her honor! You will often find Lacey helping to run our front desk with one of our furry felines curled up in her lap. When you stop by DCHS, be sure to say hi to Lacey and thank her for her wonderful work with our cats! BOARD OF DIRECTORS LISTING Ryan Vossekuil............................................ Director RESCUE PARTNER SPOTLIGHT In February, 2014, DCHS formed a rescue partnership with Pennies-4Paws Inc. who transports at risk dogs to shelters and rescues. Because of this partnership, 200 dogs have made it to the safety of the Dodge County Humane Society, and ultimately to their loving forever homes. Pennies-4-Paws Inc., founded by Sally Geiger, was formed in 2011 with a mission to raise funds for various animal related causes including food drives, medical expenses, animal transports, and supplies for shelters and rescues. For nearly two decades, Sally has worked tirelessly with local animal shelters to raise awareness and funds which has benefitted thousands of animals. Sally’s passion for animal welfare is unending and as a result hundreds of animals have been saved. To be able to pursue her lifelong dream she created Pawtique where your purchases help her to help animals full time! It allows her to fundraise, transport, foster and advocate for animals all over the United States. Your purchases help save lives. Please visit Pawtique, and please join us in thanking Sally for her passion and vision. SPOTLIGHT ON DUKE On December 30, 2014, we received a terrified German Shepherd named Duke. For weeks, Duke cowered and shook uncontrollably in his kennel. Upon examination, we found multiple BB’s lodged under Duke’s skin. We didn’t know much about Duke, but we all knew life hadn’t been good to him. This boy had suffered, and we were going to do everything we could to help him find happiness. We sought out help from an animal trainer who worked with staff to create an individual plan to build confidence in Duke. After months of working with him, we are thrilled to report that Duke found his forever family. Duke continues to be scared of certain things, but he is settling in nicely in his new home. A huge thank you to Duke’s new parents who believe in him and were willing to give him a chance. Congratulations Duke! PONY UPDATE In July, 2014, DCHS received a call from Becky, a concerned citizen, regarding 2 ponies (Dottie and Buffy) that were in desperate need of medical care. Dottie and Buffy that were in desperate need of medical care. After investigating, we found that Dottie had a horrible injury that had gone untreated for 1-2 years. She was walking on her fetlock joint and this injury was “one of the worst cases of a contracture (bent backwards) the investigating equine veterinarian had ever seen”. Buffy’s hooves were overgrown, with nearly a year’s worth of growth, interfering with her being able to walk normally. Luckily for Dottie, the talented staff of the Wisconsin Equine Clinic & Hospital could do a surgery that would straighten her leg and let her walk normally for the first time in years. The horse community pulled together to come to Dottie’s rescue! Amazing Grace Equine Sanctuary, Dodge County Humane Society and Pennies4-Paws raised the funds needed for Dottie’s surgery, which was performed on July 30, 2014. The surgery and after care would be extensive, with Dr. John Pigott needing to cut a total of three tendons to be able to allow the foot/hoof to go back to its original position. This surgery meant that Dottie would need a series of full leg casts, which needed to be changed every 30 days. The ponies initially stayed at the clinic for over a month, and finally were able to go to their foster home... with Becky, their original rescuer! They made several trips back to the Wisconsin Equine Clinic for Dottie’s cast changes, and Buffy’s continued hoof trimming. They remained on stall rest, until finally; in the fall of 2014 Buffy got the chance to run around in the little outdoor paddock! Fast forward to the spring of 2015 - Dottie’s casts were replaced by a splint, and then later replaced by a special corrective horse shoe. She had to remain on stall rest for many months to limit her leg movement to promote the healing. We are happy to report that recently this tough girl was able to go outdoors! Dottie loved the warmth and sunshine and got to be a pony again! She still has a long road ahead, but with the care and love from Becky and the community, Dottie and Buffy have a bright new future! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Our shelter couldn’t run without the help of numerous volunteers! We are very fortunate to have some awesome volunteers already on board, but we are always looking for more so we can continue to provide topnotch care to our animals. We are looking for people to help walk dogs, enjoy playtime with dogs, fill Kongs, play with cats, transport animals to vet appointments, general maintenance, yard clean up, and special events. If you think you could donate your time to help the animals, please consider becoming a volunteer. Please call the shelter for more details. – Monday, June 8, we will be hosting the 10th Annual Golf Outing to benefit the animals of DCHS. This year’s event will be held at Old Hickory Golf Club. Please consider joining us for golf, dinner, and live and silent auctions. There will be lots of prizes, raffle items, and games. This event proves to be a great time year after year. We will even have some adoptable animals out on the course for you to meet! Can’t make it that day? Sponsorships are available at many different levels. Please contact the shelter for more information. GOLF OUTING RUN FOR THE PAWS The 7th Annual Run for the Paws will be held on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2015 in Randolph. There are several courses to choose from – a 10k run, a 5k run or a 1 mile Fun Run/Walk. This is a professionally timed race and awards are given in many different divisions. Again this year, every registration includes a free ticket to the FFA breakfast. You can make a day of it and stay for the Randolph Labor Day parade and Corn Carnival. Register online at racemine.com or download an entry form at www. marshviewclinic.com. All proceeds help us cover daily operating expenses. We hope to see you all there running for the paws! SPOTLIGHT ON SASHA After being at DCHS for over 200 days, we are happy to announce that Sasha found a home! This beautiful grey cat came to us as a stray when she was not quite a year old. We don’t know why it took Sasha so long to find her perfect family, but we are so happy that she did. Thank you to her wonderful new family. Congratulations Sasha! OBEDIENCE CLASSES You asked for it, and we made it happen! We are proud to announce that on Saturday, May 9, we began holding obedience classes at DCHS. This 7 week course is being taught by a certified dog trainer. Cost is $100 ($85 for DCHS alumni). Dogs will learn basic obedience such as sit, down, stand, stay and come as well as proper leash walking. Basic manners and behavioral problems will also be covered. We are so happy to be able to offer this to the dogs of Dodge County. Please contact the shelter for more info or to be put on the list for the next session. HOW DO YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS HELP THE SHELTER? Did you know that every dollar you donate to the Dodge County Humane Society stays directly at the shelter to help all animals that come through our doors. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND DONORS! NOT A MEMBER? JOIN ON OUR WEBSITE. BARN BUDDIES Throughout the year, we find ourselves with awesome cats that just aren’t meant to live indoors. We are looking for adopters that have a barn and are willing to save a cat and naturally control their rodent population. All barn buddies are spayed/neutered, FIV/FeLV tested, and fully vaccinated. When you adopt a barn buddy, we will provide you with guidance on how to successfully acclimate them to their new home. We will also provide housing for you to put in your barn. If you can find a place in your barn for a new buddy, please contact the shelter. FEATURED ADOPTABLE CAT Yogi is a large 4 year old orange and white cat that came to DCHS after being abandoned back in October. We are very thankful for the animal lover that found and brought this guy in. We don’t know why Yogi has been with us for over 200 days, but we hope that he finds his forever family soon. If you think your home would be a good fit for Yogi, please come in and meet him. FOSTERING SAVES LIVES! Despite our best efforts, shelter animals still spend too many hours alone in a cage. The Foster Program gives animals in need a little extra TLC. We provide the supplies and vet care; you provide the temporary home and love. We currently have 2 dogs that need the love and support of a foster home. Daisy is a 1 year old Border Collie mix. This girl is very shy and needs help gaining confidence. She gets along well with cats and dogs. She responds to her name and has been kept in a crate at night. Daisy needs a home with love, patience and a fenced in yard. Blue is a 9 year old Blue Tick Coonhound that has been looking for his forever family for far too long. In February, Blue went to an incredible foster facility that specializes in senior dogs. He quickly became a staff favorite at Bob’s House, but unfortunately, it was time for him to move on. Blue has a lot of energy for a 9 year old dog. He knows his name and basic commands. He loves other dogs but tends to be a bit overzealous with cats. Please contact the shelter if you are interested in fostering either one of these truly deserving dogs. PADDY’S FUND In the last year, DCHS has spent over $15,000 on specialized medical care for some of Dodge County’s neediest animals. We are able to do this through your continued support of Paddy’s Fund. Paddy was a senior dog that was found wandering in Beaver Dam in the dead of winter. He was adopted by a very special family who he brought much joy to for 12 months. We honor Paddy’s spirit by helping other animals in need. Please consider supporting Paddy’s Fund. TAILS AND TRAILS Every Saturday morning at 10am we gather a group of volunteers in an effort to get every dog out of the shelter. We take advantage of the beautiful Wild Goose Trail and we go for a walk. Our dogs get to experience new sights and smells and get some much needed exercise. This is an easy, fun way to volunteer and truly makes a difference in the life of our dogs. We can always use more dog walkers, so consider coming out. No need to sign-up and no commitment. We supply each walker with a harnessed dog, leash, treats, and of course, poop bags. Just put on your walking shoes and meet at the shelter. Hope to see you soon! OPEN HOUSE Our 2nd Annual Open House was a huge success! How do we know it was successful? We had 21 animals go home in the week following the event! We had such a wonderful time talking to people and showing off all the great animals DCHS has to offer. A huge thank you to the many volunteers who helped to make this event so successful! From the tasty baked goods, to the hours of time that were put in, we continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of this community. We thank you all for coming out that day. We hope you had fun! DODGE COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY IS PROUD TO BE A LIFE-SAVING SHELTER. THIS MEANS THAT WE SAVE ALL HEALTHY, TREATABLE, AND REHABILITATABLE ANIMALS. EVEN WHEN THE SHELTER IS FULL, EUTHANASIA IS ONLY USED FOR THE VERY SICK OR THOSE CONSIDERED DANGEROUS TO PUBLIC SAFETY. WE USE MANY STRATEGIES INCLUDING ANIMAL PROMOTIONS, EXPANDED VOLUNTEER AND FOSTER PROGRAMS, AND EDUCATION TO LOWER THE NUMBER OF HOMELESS ANIMALS IN OUR SHELTER. DCHS APPAREL T-shirts are here! Stop in to purchase your very own Dodge County Humane Society shirt for only $15. Coming soon in kids’ sizes! DCHS IS HIRING! DCHS has recently experienced much growth and success. With that comes the need to add staff to make sure that we continue to provide the highest quality of care to the animals that we serve. We are looking to fill the following positions: • Animal Caregiver – we have both full-time and part-time positions available. This position allows someone to work directly with the animals. • Customer Service Professional – 30 hours a week. Looking for a friendly person who believes in the mission of DCHS. Must be available Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturdays. • Certified Veterinary Technician – full time position. We are looking for a CVT to help with animal assessment. Must have degree and experience. Please email [email protected] for more details. FEATURED ADOPTABLE DOG Todd is a 3 year old Boxer mix that came to us in January from an overcrowded shelter in Texas. This beautiful dog is an oversized lap dog that has been patiently waiting to find his forever family for several months now. He is smart, strong, and a quick learner. Todd feels that he is enough animal for any family, so he needs to be in a home where he is the only pet. He does do well with children. If you think your home would be better with Todd in it, please come in and meet him today.
