My Conference Travels
This story tells about the NACURH conferences that I attended from 2002 to 2006.
Story by: Nicholas Martin
NACURH 2002 Conference
22-25. May 2002
My first NACURH conference was held at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The day before the conference, our
delegation from Akron got to shop at the Mall of America and ride some of the rides at the amusement park there! I was one
of eight national finalists for the NACURH First Year Experience Award. Even though I didn't win, the conference was still
a great learning experience!
NACURH 2003 Conference
22-24. May 2003
My second NACURH conference was held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. I was one of eight national finalists
for the NACURH NCC of the Year Award. I made the CAACURH regional display for the conference.
NACURH 2004 Conference
26-29. May 2004
My third NACURH conference was held at Saint Louis University. Before the conference, our delegation got to ride to the
top of the Gateway Arch and ate lunch at a rock-and-roll themed restaurant named Blueberry Hill. Some of us also went to a
St. Louis Cardinals' baseball game at the old Busch Stadium. During the closing ceremonies of the conference, The
University of Akron was one of eight schools to receive the prestigious Golden Anniversary Service Award, commemorating
the 50th anniversary of NACURH.
NACURH 2005 Conference
26-28. May 2005
My fourth NACURH conference was held at Syracuse University. Both the opening and closing ceremonies were held in the
Carrier Dome, home of the Syracuse Orange basketball and football teams.
NACURH 2006 Conference
31. May - 6. June, 2006
My last NACURH conference was held at the University of California at Berkeley. The best part about the weekend was
touring San Francisco the day before the conference and the day after the conference. Our delegation from Akron toured
Alcatraz, rode the cable cars, went in the Pacific Ocean, and walked along part of the Golden Gate Bridge! I was one of eight
national finalists for the NACURH Distinguished Service Award. After the conference, some of us made a special trip to Los
Angeles and went to Disneyland for two days. It was my first time on the West Coast, and it was definitely the best vacation I
have ever had!
