Continuing our support of local artistic talents, tcc “The Gallery” at 51 Circular Road is delighted to
present the second edition of ‘The Sew-Out Show’ from 17 April to 8 June 2015. First launched in
2013, the idea behind this highly interactive exhibition is to allow visitors to own a unique section of
an artwork by having it converted into beautiful accessories by skilled local craftsmen. Following
the success of the last show, this year will see the collaboration between renowned Los Angeles
based photographer, Kevin Ou, and design platform The General Company.

Best known for his celebrity and fashion films and photographs, Ou has worked with a number of
high profile celebrities, such as Snoop Dogg, Emma Stone and Alice Cooper, and his images have
been published in magazines including Rolling Stone, Vogue and Interview. For this exhibition,
however, he decided to depart in an artistically different direction and came up with the idea of
“dynamic light painting’ by setting his camera on long exposure and literally jumping around with it.
Shares Ou: “I wanted to return to the roots of photography when creating this series. The word
‘photography’ comes from the Greek words phós (‘light’) and graphis (‘stylus’ or ‘paintbrush’) –
together they mean ‘drawing with light’. These images are truly unique, because it’s virtually
impossible to recreate them. Capturing light in long exposures breaks down our conventional
understandings of time and space. Time is no longer linear. We see multiple moments all at once.”
The 13 works in the resulting series, entitled ‘Kinetic Abstraction (The Metamorphosis of Light)’,
are colourful and mesmerising, and will be displayed on the walls of tcc. Visitors can decide on the
form that they want the artwork to take, and then trace the product’s outline directly onto a section
that they like on the high-quality fabric. After a few months, the talented craftsmen of The General
Company will have turned them into eye-catching and functional goods.
Says Colin Chen, the Co-Founder of The General Company: “At The General Company, we try to
give lesser-known craftsmen more exposure. Kevin and I have known each other for a while now
and we’ve always wanted to collaborate, so this is a great opportunity to do that. He is a master of
photography, and our craftsmen will help translate his artworks into playful products.” Kevin and
Colin have been exploring ways where art and fashion can intersect, making art shows more
interactive to the regular viewer. Now guests can own and wear a portion of the art work, an option
rarely seen in the art or fashion world.
The types of merchandise that buyers can choose from are tote bags, laptop bags, phone covers,
cushion covers, bowties and pocket squares, with prices starting from $XX - $XX. The bowties and
pocket squares will be printed on silk faille, while the other items will be crafted out of eco-canvas.
Says Henry Tan, the Marcom Manager of tcc: “This edition of ‘The Sew-Out Show’ is yet another
innovative event to be held at tcc. Both Kevin and the guys at The General Company have an
innate sense of creativity within them, so the artworks are not just vibrant and colourful, they’re
also very trendy.”
So whether you’re looking for a gorgeous new addition to your wardrobe or hoping to show your
support for the local arts scene, head on over to tcc “The Gallery” during the three-month
exhibition. Do be warned, though – once an area of the canvas has been choped, that’s it, so go
early to ensure that you can get your favourite cut of fabric.

About Kevin Ou
Kevin Ou (Born 1979) makes photos and films. Ou’s work plays on the relationship between the
universality of light and multimedia experiences. His works directly respond to the surrounding
environment and uses everyday experiences as an artist as a starting point. By applying
abstraction, Ou finds that movement reveals an inherent awkwardness, a humour that echoes our
own vulnerabilities. The artist also considers movement as a metaphor for the ever-seeking man
who experiences a continuous loss.
Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is
questioned. New sequences are created which reveal an inseparable relationship between motion,
time and space. This series never shows the complete structure. This results in the fact that the
artist can easily imagine an own interpretation without being hindered by the historical reality. This
expressive light painting series doesn’t reference recognisable form. The results are deconstructed
to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted.
Two very distinct elements are at play here: fine art and fashion. There is an understanding
between the two that they coexist simultaneously and equally. In constant service to the other they
join in a quest to express extraordinary beauty. Ou is interested in a real marriage where art is
expressed as fashion, the notion that the exact meeting point is where something genuinely new is
created. Finding that meeting point is the most worthwhile and powerful pursuit in his work.
All pieces were created exclusively in-camera with minimal intervention from any image editing
software.
Kevin Ou currently lives and works between Los Angeles and Singapore.
