Programme
One of the first Contender fleets on the water at Medemblik (1970?)
Welcome to the Contender World Championship
The Dutch Contender Association is very delighted to see the Contender sailors coming from all
over the world to Medemblik again to compete for the Worlds 2015 and its preluding event the
Open Dutch Nationals (Pre-Worlds). We take pride to expect sailors from Australia, Austria,
Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, USA, and…The Netherlands.
The (Pre-)Worlds 2015 will offer you a good, well known sailing arena, a camping site near the
boats, opportunities to meet each other, and a nice, but not too full, social programme for you
and your next of kin. All this will take place at the International Sailing Centre in Medemblik. This
Centre is well equipped to handle the big fleet that we expect to participate in the (Pre-)Worlds.
We are proud to have the experienced Royal Yacht Club Hollandia provide for our race
committee.
Medemblik is a familiar place for the Contender fleet. Back in 1968 it was the venue for the trials
that eventually selected the Contender as the new International Single Handler, and it hosted
many world championships for the class afterwards.
Medemblik is situated in the North-Western part of The Netherlands, in the province of NorthHolland also known as West Friesland. It is also a part of Historic Holland. During the 15 th -17th
century Medemblik was one of the cities that profitted greatly from the trade and its harbour
facilities and had its golden era during the Dutch Golden Age (approximately from 1570 to
1672). From that time and on Medemblik and cities like Hoorn, Haarlem, Delft and Amsterdam
are still showing many millions of tourists annually this great part of Dutch history. This Golden
Age brought many famous painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer.
In the 20th century, after the closing off the South Sea with the Afsluitdijk (IJsselmeer Barrier
Dam, one of the Netherlands greatest water works and only 20 minutes drive from Medemblik)
the IJsselmeer developed not only into our countries larges fresh water reservoir, but also to a
great lake for all kinds of water recreation. By the second half of the 20 th century Medemblik and
the IJsselmeer (fresh water) became well known because of its excellent sailing conditions
The Worlds 2015 offers you the opportunity to visit the historical and cultural places mentioned
and enjoy the different kinds of water recreation as they are all rather close to Medemblik.
The Worlds 2015 takes place in the Netherlands at a time that “the wind heads from the right
direction” for the Dutch Contender Association. The (quality and quantity of) the fleet is again
growing with younger helmsman and new boats. To fulfil the needs of all helmsmen we are also
desperate for used boats. This year’s Worlds will be remembered as the one where you had to
be. The organisation is ready, the location perfect and we are confident we will get it done with
of course the help of all competitors and their companions.
I wish you a pleasant stay in Medemblik and good winds, may the best win.
Pim Langendijk, Chairman of the Dutch Contender Association
Venue
Royal Yacht Club Hollandia
The Royal Yacht Club Hollandia organises racing events for both sailing and rowing. Since
1963, many major sailing events in the Netherlands take place on the IJsselmeer near
Medemblik. The emphasis is on international events for Olympic and ISAF racing classes.
Events are organised in close co-operation with the Class Associations. The entire organisation
of the RYC Hollandia is run by volunteers.
International Sailing Centre
In 1996 the Royal Dutch Association for the Water Sports (Watersportverbond) the province of
North-Holland and the city council of Medemblik decided to build the facilities that are now
known as the International Sailing Centre Medemblik (ISC Medemblik).
The Centre is located on the west coast of the IJsselmeer close to Medemblik. This unique
location includes the restaurant MED (with view on the IJsselmeer) and a yachting shop. It also
offers a regatta office, measurement room, briefing and jury rooms, plenty of showers and
toilets, a big slipway and plenty of room to park your car.
Earlier this year, the International Sailing Centre Medemblik has obtained the status of ISAF
Approved Training Centre, as second in the world. This states that training programmes for all
Olympic and Paralympic Classes are available at the International Sailing Centre Medemblik.

Medemblik
West Friesland's oldest city
Lying amidst peace and quiet and expansiveness is Medemblik,
the oldest city in West Friesland. The International Sailing Centre,
where national and international sailing competitions are organized,
and Water Sports Museum add international allure to the town.
Historical and modern
In the centre you will find historical and modern features go hand in
hand. Beautiful yachts and historical ships from the brown fleet tie
up in the modern harbours of the historical inner city. Sitting on one
of the terraces you can enjoy all that hustle and bustle on the water
while you savour a delicious drink.
Museums and castle
The city has many museums, of which Castle Radboud, dating back to the 13th century,
occupies a prominent position. At the Baking Museum the most delicious delicacies are baked
traditionally and at the Steam Mill you can learn everything about the evolution of the steam
machine. Medemblik is also a stop for the Hoorn-Medemblik steam train.
Those looking for peace and quiet can mount their bikes with a VVV cycle route in hand and
make a trip over dikes, through old ribbon settlements and along traditional farmhouses. From
the top of the dike you can look out across the endless IJsselmeer.
Surroundings
Because most of the surface is lowlands, lying below sea level, Medemblik and its surrounding
cities & villages have numerous canals and dikes. It is for that reason that Medemblik and other
cities in Holland (the lower, western part of the Netherlands) are very scenic and full of historical
and cultural highlights, like for instance the Unesco World Heritage of the Beemster
(approximately 30 minutes drive from Medemblik).

Two supermarkets are located relative close to the International Sailing Centre. One in the

International Sailing Centre to Medemblik Centre you drive from the dike through a nice living
quarter. The road makes a sharp ninety degree turn to the right. Take the first street to the left
and cross the roundabout. Next to the gas-station you find the entrance to the parking lot of the

Suggestions for trips
There are lots of things to see and do in Medemblik and surroundings. Some ideas:
 Wander around at Castle Radboud or in the Baking Museum in Medemblik.
 What’s a better way to discover The Netherlands apart from sailing? Cycling of course!
You can rent a bike directly in front of the central bridge of Medemblik (please note that
we Dutchies drive and cycle on the right side of the road!).
 See, hear, taste and smell everyday life around the Zuiderzee before the Afsluitdijk
(IJsselmeer Barrier Dam) changed the sea into the IJsselmeer in 1932 in the ‘Zuiderzee
Museum’ (about 30 minutes by car).
 Explore one of the greatest cities in the world: Amsterdam! From Amsterdam canals to
world-famous Amsterdam museums and historical Amsterdam sights, it is one of the
most romantic and beautiful cities in Europe. Less than 1 hour by car or 1h15 by public
transport from Medemblik (we suggest the 2nd option due to limited parking places and
high parking prices).

One of many ways of water recreation around Medemblik. Very nice to do with the family!
