2016 SANFL RULE CHANGES HOW THEY WORK
CAP ON ROTATIONS
• Each team (League and Reserves) is entitled to make as
many as 60 interchanges in general play per match. They
can also make as many as three changes at each break,
effectively resulting in 69 per match.
• At Under-18 and Under-16 level, it is 60 rotations per
match exclusive of changes made at each break.
• Once the interchange cap has been reached all players
on the interchange bench must wear an SANFL
approved “Interchange Vest” which must be visible at all
times.
CAP ON ROTATIONS – PENALTIES
• By exceeding the interchange cap, it will result in a free
kick and 50m penalty being awarded to the opposition
Club AND the player entering the field once the
interchange cap is reached will be ordered to leave the
field with that player not able to be replaced; and
• A fine of $1500 for a first offence at League level ($750
4
sanfl.com.au
for all other grades) and up to $3000 for a second or
subsequent offence at League Level ($1500 for all other
grades).
LAST POSSESSION OUT OF BOUNDS
• A free kick shall be awarded against a player who:
• Kicks or handballs the football over the boundary line
without the football being touched by another player;
• Except where a player who does not have possession
stops the football being touched by an opposition player
by shepherding the football across the boundary line
where the football could have otherwise been touched.
HOLDING THE BALL – STRICTER INTERPRETATION
In 2016, there will be a clear directive from the SANFL
Umpiring Department regarding a stricter interpretation of
holding the ball, which is aimed at reducing stoppage (ballup stoppage) numbers.
A 32-year drought-breaking
premiership completed the fairytale
that was West Adelaide’s 2015 season.
The Bloods displayed the attacking,
attractive style of play that got them to
the Grand Final in a show of strength
to defeat the minor premier Eagles at
Adelaide Oval.
A long-awaited premiership was
even sweeter for coach Mark Mickan
who missed out on the 1983 triumph
through injury, while captain Chris
Schmidt was a deserved winner of the
Jack Oatey Medal for best afield.

SEVEN MUST SEE MATCHES IN 2016
By Steve Barrett
STURT V WOODVILLE-WEST TORRENS
ROUND 1 @ PETER MOTLEY OVAL
All eyes will be on new Double Blues coach Marty Mattner
when he makes his senior coaching debut at the helm on
Easter Monday against the side that instigated Sturt’s horror
2015 free-fall.
Goalless at half-time in last year’s Round 8 clash at
Woodville, the Blues were held to their lowest-ever total
against the Eagles and didn’t fare much better in the return
bout at Unley five rounds later, held to just one first-half goal
in another listless defeat.
That Round 8 loss kicked off a stretch of nine defeats from
10 matches, giving Sturt no hope of backing up its finals
showing in 2014.
With a new-look side boasting plenty of recent AFL
experience, Mattner has an early opportunity to shine and
get one back on the Eagles.
NORTH ADELAIDE V NORWOOD
ROUND 2 @ PROSPECT OVAL
The chance to see prized recruits Lewis Johnston and
Luke Mitchell lining up together in attack will have Redlegs
supporters’ mouths watering.
North fans will be far less enamoured when the pair returns
to their former home to face their former side - donning
Norwood colours - in the Roosters’ first home fixture.
Injury restricted ex-Crow Johnston to just two League
NORWOOD V PORT ADELAIDE
ROUND 1 @ COOPERS STADIUM
Australian football’s oldest, grandest rivalry kicks off
Season 2016 of the SANFL IGA League under lights on
Good Friday Eve before a typically bumper crowd at The
Parade.
Between them, the Redlegs and Magpies have claimed
a whopping 66 (or almost half ) of the 133 League
premierships won in this State, have played each other
almost 300 times (some 50 more match-ups than the
famous Collingwood-Carlton rivalry) and in 15 Grand
Finals (more than Collingwood-Carlton and CarltonEssendon combined).
Port’s most recent flag, back in 1999, came courtesy
of a nail-biting eight-point Grand Final win against
Norwood, while the Legs’ most recent pennant, their
‘three-peat’ capping 2014 triumph, arrived thanks to a
heart-stopping four-point win over the old rival.
The rivalry has been rather one-sided recently with
Norwood claiming 17 of the past 21 match-ups, a stat
the Magpies will be keen to reverse.

WEST ADELAIDE V WOODVILLE-WEST TORRENS
ROUND 5 @ ADELAIDE OVAL
The traditional Grand Final rematch on Anzac Day
is always a momentous occasion and Adelaide Oval
will be buzzing when the two best teams from last
year square off in the season’s biggest non-finals
blockbuster.
West coach Mark Mickan and Eagles boss Michael
Godden are friendly rivals, having played together
briefly for the Bloods in the ‘90s, while Mickan also
coached the Eagles in 1998-99.
Friendships will be put aside on the holiday
Monday though.
West will be out to maintain alpha-dog status and
prove last September’s stunning, drought-breaking
September run was no fluke, while the Eagles, the
form team for the majority of 2015 before getting
blown away by the Bloods in the decider, will be
keen to seek retribution.
games in 2015 and his switch from Prospect to The Parade,
finalised in January, wasn’t exactly super-smooth.
Johnston is joined by 198cm, 98kg Mitchell who, despite
North’s struggles last season, was unable to crack a League
berth and played in the club’s losing Reserves Grand Final
before clearing his locker.
If Johnston and Mitchell get hot and start inflicting
damage on the Roosters, who won just a single game last
year, expect them to cop some heat, both on the field and
from the Grog Squad diehards.
CENTRAL DISTRICT V ADELAIDE
ROUND 9 @ MY MONEY HOUSE OVAL
Although brief, there’s history between these two clubs and it’s spicy.
Many Bulldogs followers were annoyed when ex-Central
superstar Ian Callinan was named as the Crows’ inaugural
SANFL captain.
Their mood wasn’t helped much either when Callinan
skippered Adelaide to its first-ever SANFL win - a thumping
one at that, by 52 points over the Dogs at Elizabeth in
early 2014.
Callinan has now retired but the Crows ensured they
won’t be rising up the popularity pecking order at Central
after talking six-time premiership legend Paul Thomas
into unexpected retirement to work for the Crows as a
development coach.
The reception of Thomas, Central’s longest-serving captain,
will be interesting.
And then there’s Crows draftee Wayne Milera, who booted
three goals for the Dogs in last year’s First Semi-Final win
over Port.
If Milera puts together a match-winning performance
against his old side, more sparks will fly.
SOUTH ADELAIDE V CENTRAL DISTRICT
ROUND 17 @ HICKINBOTHAM OVAL
For all but two hours of last season, South Adelaide had
a mortgage on a second successive finals berth, with the
only proviso being that the Panthers had to hold off the
visiting Bulldogs at Hickinbotham Oval in the last minor
round game.
Central, which had been outside the five all year,
finished 2015 with a flurry and spoiled South’s plans with
a seven-point win, pinching the fifth finals berth from the
Panthers’ clutches in an eleventh-hour heist.
South, a 2014 Preliminary Finalist, watched on
frustratedly as the giant-slaying Dogs proceeded to oust
reigning Grand Finalists Norwood and Port in successive
finals at Adelaide Oval before tackling West for a spot in
the decider.
The Panthers were left thinking “that could have been
us”, not only by losing that last match, but earlier in May
when the two sides played out a draw, during which
South held a six-point lead that was erased in the dying
seconds when Central’s Chris Jansen bombed a goal from
outside 50m.
For the Panthers, this meeting will be about redemption.
For the Bulldogs, opportunity.
GLENELG V PORT ADELAIDE
ROUND 20 @ GLIDEROL STADIUM
If you’re in the Edward Rix Stand or around the northern
concourse near Rugless Terrace, keep an eye out for Tigers
great Graham Cornes when he watches son Chad - who grew
up living and breathing all things yellow-and-black - coach
at the Bay for the very first time.
Unlike Graham though, who played and coached three
flags with Glenelg during his long, decorated association,
Chad will be a visitor at Brighton Road.
The enemy, in fact.
The ultimate enemy, steering the ship for the Magpies,
Graham’s sworn nemesis over several decades.
Work commitments permitting, younger brother Kane will
be in the home team’s coaches box in his new development
role, attempting to plot Chad’s downfall in unison with Bays
coach Matthew Lokan, who played 112 SANFL games for
Port from 2002-11.

SCOTT TO MAKE LEAGUE DEBUT AT 29
By Peter Argent
A
fter a career that has included
the full gambit of experiences,
Scott McMahon will make his
SANFL League debut in the Easter
Monday opening round clash for Sturt
against his former club.
The Woodville-West Torrens junior
never made the senior side during
his time as an Eagle; before North
Melbourne snapped him up with pick
38 in the 2005 Rookie Draft.
Nevertheless, the 29-year-old is rapt
to be back in South Australia with his
wife and family and is looking forward
to the 2016 campaign at Unley.
“Playing with Sturt this season, a part
of my role is to look after the back line
for our senior coach, Martin Mattner,”
McMahon explained to the SA Football
Budget.
“We have a super young group at
Sturt.
“I am the oldest by three years, the
next (oldest) on the track is Brodie
Martin at 26.
“The average age of our squad this is
about 21.
“From a personal perspective my
body is good, after a knee surgery post
the ’15 season.
“Having not seen very much of
SANFL football for the past 10 years
at all, I keen to find out the difference
between SANFL and VFL football now.”
Despite this Round 1 clash being his
first League appearance, there is no
questioning McMahon’s experience.
His first couple of years with the
Kangaroos were tough and included
a stint in the VFL reserves with Port
Melbourne and the 2006 with the
Tasmania Devils.
But finally, after some hard toil,
McMahon broke through for an AFL
debut against Carlton in Round 8 of
2007, collecting 13 possessions.
In just his fifth senior appearance,
he enjoyed a Rising Star nomination
against Richmond and by the end
of the season had played in three
AFL finals matches, including the
Preliminary Final loss to Power at AAMI
Stadium.
Photo: Peter Argent
After 16 games in his initial season,
McMahon played 13 in his second year
at North, continuing as a regular senior
player between 2009 and 2012, playing
his 100th AFL in the Round 18 contest
of the last of those four seasons.
Over the past two seasons however,
the Yorke Peninsula native played just
six senior games at the Kangaroos
finishing with a total of 124 matches.
McMahon’s personal disappointment
of having his AFL journey come to
an end has been a positive for Sturt,
bringing experience, toughness and
leadership to the group.
Double Blues Football Manager
Shane Grimm sees McMahon as among
the best 10 players who will don the
Sturt jumper this year.
“He is a senior experienced footballer
who is primed to have an impact on
our competition immediately,” Grimm
said.
“Being from an AFL system, he’s vocal
on the track and understands the
requirements of the game.
“Scott’s first training with us was the
final pre-Christmas session.
“He’s in good condition and has
signed a two-year deal to play with us,
but we are hoping he’ll be around for at
least a couple of years after that.
“Our senior quartet, including Scott
has already impacted on the squad.
“Scott wanted to and it’s looking for
opportunities to get into the coaching
side of the game.
“He has a mentoring role and will
watch vision with our defenders this
year, but primarily we looking for him
to be a key player, predominately in
defence.”

2016 MAC AMBASSADORS
At MAC, we recognise the pivotal role football plays in connecting communities.
T
ackling the road toll takes
teamwork. That’s why the Motor
Accident Commission (MAC) is working
with the SANFL to spread the road
safety message to club members and
supporters, their families and the
community.
Driving may well be the most
dangerous thing any of us ever do, yet
because of its everyday nature, many
drivers become relaxed about the risk.
At MAC, it is part of our role to remind
people of the risks and let them know
what they can do to help reduce road
trauma.
The Game Changer program looks at
the similarities and preparation that is
required for driving and preparing for
a football match. On the football field
you don’t want to let your mates
down. One distraction, one poor
choice or a split second of inattention
can have a profound impact on the
game, but on the road one distraction,
one poor choice or a split second
of inattention can have devastating
consequences.
Whether you’re a player thinking
about the choice to dive over the ball
or to leap to take a contested mark,
or a driver creeping over the speed
limit or drink driving, the choices you
make can change the outcome in an
instant.
If we all become Game Changers
on the road, we can help to change
driving behaviour and ultimately
reduce the road toll.
In 2016, each SANFL club has
nominated a MAC Ambassador to
spread the message above when
visiting clubs and supporters in their
local area.
New Norwood co-captain Jace
Bode will again be joined by Angus
Rowntree (Eagles), Jarrod Schiller
(Central), Steven Summerton (Port),
James Craig (North) and Craig Pitt
(Glenelg).
This year’s new MAC Ambassadors
include Brodie Martin (Sturt), Matthew
Rose (South) and Josh Schiller (West)
while Jono Beech has switched from
the Bloods to the Crows.

• Two matches on Good Friday for
the first time, with a blockbuster
Round 1 planned for the IGA

• SA Football Hall of Famer Graham
Cornes will coach the West End
State Team against the VFL at
Adelaide Oval on Sunday May 29.

SANFL Reserves Report
Eagles achieve perfection
T
hings could hardly have gone
better for the Woodville-West
Torrens Reserves in 2015.
A perfect undefeated season, a
Reserves Magarey Medal and, of
course, a premiership.
Back-to-back premierships in fact.
The West Torrens twos in 1919 are
the only other side to match the
Eagles’ success at Reserves level and
just one team has gone through an
entire League season undefeated, Port
Adelaide’s 1914 “Invincibles” side. No
team has ever achieved the feat in the
AFL/VFL.
Coach Scott Mathews’ high-flying
side came close to falling at the final
hurdle however, as they were pushed
hard by the challenging Roosters on
Grand Final day.
The Eagles led by just four points
heading into the final term, and North
threatened to produce an enormous
upset, before the minor premiers broke
away late kicking the last three goals of
the match.
Midfielder Ethan Haylock collected
30 dispoals, 10 marks and seven
clearances on route to taking out
the Bob Lee Medal for best on
ground.
By Patrick Keam | Twitter @patkeam
However, as was the case all season, it
was a collective effort by the Eagles.
Captain and joint Reserves Magarey
Medallist Matthew Appleton had 21
touches and 11 clearances, while Sam
Rowland was everywhere with 26
disposals of his own, encapsulating the
midfield dominance that the Eagles
had all year.
Matthew Raymond was the leading
goal kicker on the ground with four,
while Alby Dunstan and Karl Muller
chipped in with two each.
For the Roosters, big men Alex Barns
and Mitch Curnow dominated the ruck
as they combined for 73 hit outs, but
the North on-ballers were not able to
take advantage.
Brandon Parfitt (18 disposals, six
marks) and Sam De Leonardis (17
touches, 11 tackles, eight clearances)
were both impressive, while Luke
Mitchell booted two second half goals.
Ultimately it wasn’t enough to halt
the charging Eagles on their way to
an undefeated season, where they
conceded a miserly 45.6 points per
game during the minor rounds.
As for the rest of the competition,
Port Adelaide played off against North
in the Preliminary Final and were
joined in the post-season by fellow
finalists Glenelg and Sturt.
Norwood narrowly missed the top
five, needing a win in the final round
against the Eagles to make the cut,
while South and West finished in
seventh and eighth respectively and
were a step behind the other sides for
most of the year.
Central almost had the
embarrassment of completing the
opposite of the Eagles’ achievement,
when they found themselves without
a win 12 games into the season before
a long awaited victory finally came at
home to West.
As season 2016 kicks off this Easter
Weekend, it is as difficult as ever to pick
between the nine teams competing in
the Reserves.
We can be sure that it will continue to
be a breeding ground for future stars.
To kick things off Norwood host old
rivals Port at the Parade, South and
Glenelg clash at Noarlunga,
the Bulldogs and the Roosters do
battle in the north and the Eagles
will start their quest for a third
successive premiership with a trip
to Sturt.

TICKETING INFORMATION
Y
ou will notice something different when you go to
your SANFL IGA League game from this weekend.
SANFL have introduced barcoded entry to all
venues. This means members will no longer need to have
entry cards “clipped”, when you enter a game as it will be
scanned.
WHY HAVE WE DONE THIS?
Simply, we are moving with the times. However, tracking
member and supporter attendances across our grounds
will provide much more than a professional service to
attendees.
Through electronic ticketing, SANFL and our Clubs will
be able to;
• Better understand member attendance trends
• Crowd movements
• Engage better with members
• Better meet customer expectations
• Provide better data to partners
Developing new ways to bring fans to games,
including new membership categories and eventually
online ticketing.
You won’t need to do anything further with your card(s).
Just simply have the barcode scan when you arrive at
the game.
Of course, with any new system we might have a few
minor issues in the first couple of weeks. Please be patient
with the gate staff as they get to know the system better.
Of course, if you have any issues, please contact your card
or pass issuer to assist.
