For the last 20 years, the Darlene and Barry Gregson have
dedicated themselves to the advancing Rustic Art and quite possibly
operating America's longest running strictly rustic furniture gallery.
Their passion has resulted in not only the creation of museum
quality furniture, but a gallery and an annual Rustic Expo that
showcase the best forest inspired furniture and furnishings,
presenting demonstrations and hosting workshops, and bringing up
a whole new generation of fine rustic artists.
1981Not wanting to spend a lot of money, and needing some furniture
for his home, Barry Gregson began looking around his property. In
the historical tradition of the Adirondack natives, he decided to use
the natural materials he found to make a few chairs for his house....
thus began Barry's love for rustic furniture and his journey toward
becoming a master artisan in the tradition of 'tree art' or rustic
furniture building.
1984While initially purchased by clients
for whom he was building fireplaces,
and family and friends, word spread
about Barry’s fine Rustic furniture to
the point that he and Darlene
decided to make it a full time
business. They needed a space to
showcase the work and therefore
opened their first Gallery in their home on Charley Hill Road in
Schroon Lake, NY. They decided to name it Adirondack Rustics,
which they discovered was the first business so and similarly named
when they registered it at the Essex County Government Center.
1985Craig Gillborn, Director of the
Adirondack Museum, invited Barry to
demonstrate how he creates his
furniture and help spread the word
about the beauty and quality of
rustic art to the thousands of visitors
that attend the popular museum in
Blue Mountain Lake. Barry's talents
and artistry continued to grow during
this time as he developed unique and
original designs for his furniture.
1989-1991Barry and Darlene moved the
Adirondack Rustic Gallery out of their
home to downtown Schroon Lake,
New York and took up residency in
an old blacksmith shop. They began
to feature additional pieces by some
of the nations’ most prominent rustic
artists.
1991Barry's oldest son, Matthew, joined the team of fine rustic craftsmen
at the Gallery and launched the career of the first of the second
generation making furniture. Matthew has won many awards since
his start in rustic furniture, 14 years ago.
1992-2000The gallery was brought back to the Charley Hill location. Barry
continued to refine his skills and began to mentor other rustic
furniture craftsmen from America and abroad.... England, Canada,
Australia, Ireland...
1996Dylan, Barry's youngest son, and Skye, his daughter, began to
contribute their artwork to the gallery. Skye's first chair won an
award in the 2004 Northeastern Woodworking Association.
2000-presentDarlene and Barry, with the help of
Barry's brothers and sons, renovated
an old restaurant on the south side
of Schroon Lake (Route 9) and
launched the new Adirondack Rustic
Gallery creating an open spacious
living-room experience to showcase
the artwork of the expanding number
of artists affiliated with the gallery.
The gallery included a dramatic stone
fireplace to create a true Great Camp atmosphere.
2001 (July)After requests by many visitors, artists and customers, Adirondack
Rustic Gallery launched the Annual Adirondack Rustic Expo held the
second weekend of July and featuring the leading artists of forest
inspired furniture and furnishings.
2004 In 2004, the Gregson’s organized the
Opening Night Preview of the
Adirondack Rustic Expo as a benefit
for the Natural History Museum of
the Adirondacks and have added
both a Saturday Night Barkeater’s
Ball and a Sunday Patron’s Breakfast
with the Artists. In addition, a new
Expo web site was launched: www.

Gregson
One of the forerunners of the current rustic movement,
Barry Gregson learned woodlore at a young age
building lean-tos of log and bark and later making
crude furniture when on fishing trips. He embarked on
a successful career as a stonemason, but always made
rustic furniture on the side for his own home. He
started making his first commissioned pieces in 1982
and for the past thirty years has been building
furniture year round.
Each piece, from tables to free-form wall cabinets to
his distinctive chairs, is an original design created from
natural bends, roots, burls, and hollows from the wild.
An artist-in-resident at the Adirondack Museum for five
years, Gregson’s work resides in the permanent
collections of many museums and has been widely
published here and abroad.

Eric
Gulbrandsen
Eric Gulbrandsen feels most peaceful with the
world and with himself, surrounded by the
beauty not created by man.
He has been a woodworker for thirty years,
and in 1994 he was able to realize a dream and
made his permanant home in the Adirondacks.
This began a fusion of his creativity with
woodworking and his passion for the outdoors.
Eric continually expresses his gratitude for the
opportunity that providence has afforded him
to create rustic art and in that to express his
love for the Adirondacks.

After18 years as an engineer, Wayne decided
to change his career and spend more time
with my wife and four children. Today his
former summer residence of many years has
happily become his full-time home and his
longtime hobby is now his vocation.
In his youth, Wayne often helped his parents
Wayne Ignatuk rebuild and refinish antiques. This experience
led to a love of woodworking, as well as a
working knowledge of furniture design. His
engineering background enables him to build
strength and durability into each piece he
makes. The design and decorative features
are the result of an artistic collaboration:
natures indomitable will on the wood and his
own sense of beauty. The final form is
determined as much by the shapes and
patterns of the material as by the whim of the
designer.

Chisholm
I have been making furniture for over thirty years. I
was introduced to rustic furniture by my wife, Gwenn,
in 1992 and began making my first rustic pieces
shortly after that. I was intrigued by the fact that you
could create pieces that were one of a kind, in a style
of your own, and by the ability to create a piece of art
while making a piece of furniture. Since then, I have
developed a style that probably is considered
contemporary rustic. I work with highly figured woods
and burls, and try to create rustic furniture that brings
out the beauty of the wood. To me, the grain and the
extraordinary figure in wood is a beautiful thing. One
thing that inspires me, is that with rustic furniture, the
piece just kind of evolves once you start working on it.

The award winning team of Frank and Carole Ruiz has
been carving their bird and wildfowl, and other artistic
creations, for many years in their studio in Gansevoort,
New York. They are regular winners in the prestigious
Ward World Wildfowl Championships in Ocean City,
Maryland, the Canadian Wildlife Carving
Championships in Ontario, Canada, the New England
Woodcarving & Wildlife Art Exposition and
Northeastern Woodworkers Association shows.
Frank is the carver using mostly wood from the tupelo,
which grows in the swamps of Louisiana and
Mississippi. Local basswood is also used, but mostly for
habitat. Carole does the painting using many wash
coats of acrylic to achieve the softness and desired
affect she is seeking. The resulting artwork speaks for
itself, and to many avid collectors who passionately
seek their latest artistic collaboration.
