Final GDCA q4 bulletin - Great Dane Club of America
GDCA BULLETIN 4TH QUARTER-NOVEMBER 2008 Great Dane Club of America event – it was much enjoyed by all attending. From the President Dear Members, What a rollercoaster ride to this year’s National. The Central Division had so many obstacles: 2 fires, hotel closings and with less than 4 weeks to the National having to find a new venue! Looking back on the situation it seems incredible that they were able to host such a successful show. Joe Longo and Lynda Moriarty did an outstanding job in putting together a great show in such a limited time frame. The whole Central Division came together and worked as a team insuring its success. Kudos to Top Twenty Chairman Barb Renkosiewicz for planning and executing such a beautiful pro bono for Dane Outreach. GDCA BULLETIN Report to Great Dane Club of America Charitable Trust on Grant to GDCA Central Division for Cardiac Echo Screening Clinic by Mary Anne Zanetos Introduction This report summarizes the procedures, results and expenditures of the cardiac echo screening clinic conducted at the GDCA’s 2008 National Specialty Show in Louisville, KY. The GDCA Charitable Trust had approved a grant of $6,500.00 to cover approximately 50% of the expenses of the clinic. The grant substantially reduced the cost of the clinic, permitting owners to be charged $75.00 per dog screened. 4TH QUARTER-NOVEMBER 2008 Premium List for the 2008 GDCA National Specialty, on the GDCA website and on Great Dane internet chatlists, including ShowDanes and MyMentors. The pre-registration form collected demographic and medical history of the dog (age, gender, reproductive status, history of previous cardiac echo/OFA and family history of heart disease) as well as preferred appointment date and owner contact information. Dog name was intentionally NOT requested, so individual participants remained anonymous. The preregistration form advised owners that only one dog per household would be given an appointment unless openings became available due to cancellations, etc. A total of 70 pre-registration forms were received. Although some conflicts arose during the show, nearly all dogs wishing to participate were worked into the schedule. Due to an unanticipated need to vacate the exam room at 4:00 p.m. on October 17th, the actual number of appointments available was 56 instead of 65 as in the grant budget. Over the two day clinic, there were a few “no-shows”. These appointments were filled by having the ring announcer ask anyone interested to phone the clinic for an immediate appointment. All 56 available appointments during the two-day clinic were filled. Clinic Administration Clinic volunteers were instructed on confidentiality procedures (i.e., not to discuss the identity of the dogs who participated or to reveal anything they might have seen or heard pertaining to individual dogs, not to leave the OFA forms where they might be seen, etc.) prior to working in the clinic. Dogs’ names did not appear on the pre-registration form, only the age and demographic information listed above. All echo exams were performed in a private room separate from the reception area. Clinic participants could not see or hear Dr. Tyrell’s conversation with the owner(s). GDCA clinic staff did GDCA BULLETIN not enter the exam room during exams. At check-in, clinic staff confirmed that each dog was positively identified. This was done by scanning the microchip or inspecting the tattoo to insure the number recorded on the OFA form matched the dog*. Owners held onto their OFA form and took it into the exam room where Dr. Tyrrell filled out his portion of the form at the conclusion of the echo exam. OFA forms turned in by owners at the clinic were immediately placed in a confidential envelope until they were mailed to OFA. Owners were told they need not turn in their OFA forms at the clinic. Thirty-nine Great Danes turned in their OFA Congenital Cardiac Database Application at the clinic. Others may have mailed the form privately, or not at all. *Four dogs who arrived at the clinic without positive ID were microchipped at the clinic at no charge. Echocardiography Procedures Each dog was examined in a quiet, darkened private room to allow dogs to relax. Echocardiography was preceded by a brief physical exam focusing on the cardiovascular system. This exam included measurement of heart rate, pulses and auscultation of lungs and heart. Echocardiography was performed on all 56 dogs in a standing position using a GE Vivid I echocardi- 4TH QUARTER-NOVEMBER 2008 ography unit. All patients were awake and non-sedated. No patients were shaved for the study. All standard (American Society of Echocardiography) views from both right parasternal and left apical imaging planes were obtained via an annular phased array 3S probe. Both color and pulsed/ continuous wave Doppler studies were performed on all heart valves. Standard M-mode and two dimensional measurements were also obtained and detailed within the patient’s report given to the owner. details on demographics will not be presented in order to prevent unintentional disclosure of specific dogs who participated in the echo clinic. Further 23 56 100 GDCA BULLETIN As expected, males showed a higher prevalence of abnormal echo: 42.4% (14/33) vs. 26.1% (6/23) for females. Overall, 35.7% (20/56) of Great Danes screened had a cardiac abnormality detected via echo. Based on responses to the question about known cardiac disease or family history on the preregistration form, we can conclude that the vast majority of these abnormalities were new diagnoses. This underscores the value of the cardiac echo clinic at the 2008 GDCA National Specialty. Expenses Total expenses of the echo clinic were $9,533.04, not including $4,200.00 in income received as fees (56 echos @ $75.00 each). The total cost of the clinic was $5,333.04. The OFA fee was collected separately and sent with each application, so it did not affect the budget. Conclusions and Recommendations As one can see from the results table, this clinic that was set up primarily to screen for dilated cardiomyopathy actually diagnosed more congenital heart defects than heart disease. This result is likely based on the skewed age of the population of dogs examined. In the future, it will be prudent to further educate our breed club on the necessity to screen young, middle aged and older dogs via echocardiography. It is likely that more dilated cardiomyopathy, in 4TH QUARTER-NOVEMBER 2008 its early stages, may have been diagnosed if we had examined an older/mature population. It is well proven that early intervention in this horrible heart disease can have excellent results, improving both the dog's quality and quantity of life. Newsletter. GDCA BULLETIN THE “GREATSINGER GREAT DANES” SAGA The effort of fostering and placing 34 Danes came close to overwhelming us. We are a small group with about five “regular” foster homes. Throughout this Greatsinger rescue, Dane Outreach had to also place the other Danes who continued to come into our program the “usual” way, through shelters or owner surrender. We could never have done it without the amazingly generous support of dozens of people who gave whatever they could, donating time, care, food, supplies, transport, and money to help in this effort, and without the support of the GDCA. June, 2007 Jackie Greatsinger , real name Bernadette Vohs, and d/b/a Greatsinger Great Danes, has 35 dogs, including 19 Danes, seized by the Pierce County Sheriff ’s Department and released on bail. July, 2007 The County gives Dane Outreach permission to take and foster the dogs, pending the outcome of the criminal case. DO cannot place, alter or even microchip any of the Danes until the court gives ownership to the state. We are told another bitch has whelped and that the remaining three adult bitches are also pregnant. 4TH QUARTER-NOVEMBER 2008 August, 2007 DO scrambles to find foster homes for adults, nursing litters, and pregnant bitches. The fourth Dane bitch, Xena, whelps a litter of 8 in the shelter, 6 survive, but 2 more die in the foster home at the age of 4 days.. The Diamond litter of eight is placed in foster it becomes evident they have parvo and must return to the Shelter for care by their vet. Three die, five survive. The Juliet litter of ten is ill, appears to have whipworm problems. The last pregnant bitch, “Xtreme” goes to a foster home. She is dangerously emaciated, with hips so bad she can barely stand. Twenty-four hours later, she whelps 16 puppies, 6 dead, 10 alive, but within a week all 10 die of herpes. “Maggie-Moo” (her new name) survives. September, 2007 Greatsinger charged with felony fraud. DO finds more foster homes, hopefully ones who would want to adopt, to take the 25 surviving puppies who are now old enough to leave their littermates. October, 2007 Greatsinger tries (for four weeks) to get her dogs back, arguing the seizure was illegal, but loses the motion. “Diamond” torsions but makes it through surgery. December, 2007 Media reports reveals the Shelter bills the County for board, the bill is over $90,000, and taxpayers will pay it. [Search on “Greatsinger” and “Vohs” in the Tacoma News Tribune (www.thenewstribune.com), KING 5 TV www.king5.com and KOMO TV www.komotv.com website for this story and related reports.] Meanwhile, trial has been delayed again, and several of the foster homes who took the adults back in June need relief, so DO finds more foster homes to take the adults. February, 2008 Judge Grant orders that the dogs be forfeited to the State (takes them from Greatsinger), but then, in order to “protect the taxpayers” (fallout from the media report!) orders that the dogs be sold “on the Internet to maximize the proceeds.” DO finds AKC judges and Dane experts to “appraise” the “fair market value” of the Danes to give a value that can be credited to Greatsinger, to avoid a sale of the dogs. Greatsinger pleads guilty and is sentenced to “house arrest” for a month, 30 days in jail (sus- GDCA BULLETIN pended), and restitution to victims and the County. She is also barred from buying or selling dogs for ten years. March, 2008 Pierce County is finally able to transfer ownership of the dogs to the Shelter, which immediately turns around and released them to the ownership of DO. We can FINALLY start altering, microchipping and ADOPTING out the 34 Danes we have been caring for over the last eight months!! Lots of VERY happy (and exhausted) people and dogs!!! Adoption contracts fly through the mail!! April, 2008 Endless paperwork and bills – vet bills, contracts, spay/neuter certificates, microchips, etc. As these Danes couldn’t be altered or chipped prior to fostering, DO now has to track all the placements to ensure all the Danes are micro-chipped and altered. May, 2008 Greatsinger’s restitution order: She has to pay $113,000 to the County for board and $6,000 to her victims. She receives a “credit” of about $300 per dog ($15,000) towards board bill. “Duke” (a Dane) and “Rawhide” (English Bulldog bitch) are to be returned to Greatsinger as her “personal pets.” June, 2008 More placements and more paperwork, as the last adoptions contracts and spay/neuter operations take place. Final cost bills are finally coming in from 4TH QUARTER-NOVEMBER 2008 DO volunteers and foster homes and the DO Treasurer is working full days to keep track of everything. To date, the Shelter will cover about $15,000 of the costs of care. Dane Outreach has paid over that amount—the final accounting is pending. July, 2008 “Lily,” the last Greatsinger Dane, a sweet buy very undersized parvosurvivor puppy with some medical problems is adopted. With a final invoice to the Shelter from the DO Treasurer, and the reimbursement of some of our costs, the saga will end. The Greatsinger Danes have become Dane Outreach rescue Danes, and we will be their safety net for the rest of their happy and safe lives. The story does not really end here, because the need for education about “backyard breeders” and “puppy-millers” continues. Dane Outreach will continue its mission to help educate people about Danes, their needs, and how to find a reputable breeder. And, of course, we will continue to help place Danes who need new owners into just the right loving permanent home. Update on the Greatsinger Saga “Greatsinger” Arrested Again: Bernadette Vohs was arrested again in October, for selling a very ill puppy and charged with theft again. The new case number is 08-1-04896-1. Trial is currently set in Pierce County Supeior Court for Jan. 26, 2009. Because selling dogs is a violation of the her sentence for the original multiple fraud charges (Cause # 07-1-04405-3) there will also be a “revocation hearing” (where she will have to “show cause” why the suspension of her original sentence should not be revoked). That Revocation Hearing is currently set for Jan. 9, 2009. The dockets in each of these cases be seen online at www.courts.wa.gov under “search case records.” GDCA BULLETIN 4TH QUARTER-NOVEMBER 2008 wood Dixie When Pigs Fly Best Bred By- Michaeldane JB Pocket Change AOM - CH Dana TLBK Darkside of Fireside AOM - CH Rika-Brier Catera Lera Etal AOM - CH Rainmaster’s She’s A Show Girl Talk about when Life gives you AOM - CH Davishires Beowulf of Chalk Hill Lemons, Make Lemonade......
