Trevin Hunte
It’s been well over a year since
Trevin Hunte, Season 3 Finalist on NBC-TV’s hit show “The
Voice,” first captured the heart
of America and blew away judges
Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Adam
Levine with his powerhouse version of Beyonce’s “Listen.”
But the 19-year-old New York-born vocal dynamo, who
joined 15 other singers as part of Team Cee Lo, isn’t anywhere close to stopping the celebration. And everyone’s
still listening as he gears up to release his first recordings since his Top Rated iTunes singles from “The Voice.”
Hunte has also been a YouTube sensation, with his performance of “Listen” earning 5-Star ratings and over 4.1
million views, and “Vision of Love,” his duet with fellow
contestant Amanda Brown in the Battle Round, hitting 1.5
million views. Hunte has also had his music placed in
the hit television show NCIS: Los Angeles, and FX’s Legit.
Hunte has performed the national anthem at the Dodger’s
baseball game for Magic Johnson’s night, for the Heat/
Cavaliers basketball game. He has also taken the stage
at Stevie Wonder’s Grammy Party, The Mint, The Hotel
Cafe, The Roxy, Halle Berry’s fundraiser, the music event
South By Southwest in Austin, Texas hosted by Diddy, and
the Pre-Oscar party at the Bel Air Hotel.

Jordan Gross
Keep Pounding has become a Carolina Panthers
mantra in honor of late Panthers player and coach
Sam Mills. Mills first used the phrase “Keep Pounding” as a coach, in an emotional speech to the team
prior to the Jan. 2, 2004 Panthers vs. Cowboys playoff
victory. Mills spoke about commitment, dedication
to teammates, team effort and never giving up…
he asked players to “Keep Pounding.” Immediately
following the coin toss, please turn your attention to
the 20-yard line at the Southeast end of the stadium.
Today’s Keep Pounding Drummer is former Panthers
offensive tackle Jordan Gross, who retired in February
following 11 seasons with the team. The franchise’s
all-time leader in starts (167), Gross was an All-Pro
selection (2008), a three-time Pro Bowler (2008, 2010,
2013) and an All-Rookie honoree on the Panthers Super Bowl XXXVIII team. Since retiring, Gross serves as
the Panthers sideline reporter for radio broadcasts
and holds roles for the Panthers TV Network, including
hosting a show “This is Gross” with former teammate
and fellow lineman Travelle Wharton.

Marching Mountaineers
As the Junior TopCats Program enters its 13th season,
girls from across the Carolinas will once again team up
with the Carolina Panthers TopCats Cheerleaders in one
spirited pregame performance! More than one hundred
Junior TopCats between the ages of 7-14 yrs. old participated in three clinics to learn the routine that they
will perform at halftime today, while making new friends
and having FUN. Each Junior TopCat is paired with a
TopCat mentor who has guided them through this amazing experience and who will perform alongside them on
game day. Formal dance and cheer experience may not
be required, but these Junior TopCats are ready to excite
you with their energy, skill, and choreography.
The Appalachian State University Marching Mountaineers perform for over 35,000 fans at each home football
game, provide support for the Mountaineers at select
away games, and perform at NFL games and high school
marching festivals. The Marching Mountaineers have 280
members that represent every academic major on campus. The marching band is one of 12 instrumental ensembles directed by distinguished faculty conductors at
the Appalachian State University Hayes School of Music.
With a strong commitment to exciting shows, excellence
in performance, and enthusiasm at athletic events, the
members of the marching band take great pride in being
known as “North Carolina’s Band of Distinction!”

2014 PANTHERS COACHES
ron
rivera
head coach
Ron Rivera was named the fourth coach in Carolina Panthers history on January 11, 2011. In 2013, his third year with the
Panthers, Rivera led Carolina to 12 wins, the NFC South division title and its first playoff appearance since 2008. After
starting the season with a 1-3 record, the Panthers won 11 of their final 12 regular season games – including a franchise
record eight-game winning streak – to secure the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a first-round bye. In recognition of that success,
Rivera was named NFL Coach of the Year by the Associated Press. Carolina’s record has improved every season under Rivera. Before joining the Panthers, Rivera served two stints as a defensive coordinator, first with the Chicago Bears from 200406 and then with the San Diego Chargers from midway through the 2008 season until the end of 2010. Rivera also coached
as an assistant with the Chargers, the Bears, and the Philadelphia Eagles. A second-round draft choice of Chicago in 1984,
Rivera played nine seasons as a linebacker with the Bears and was a member of the Super Bowl XX championship team.

COMBINES LUXURY
AND POWER.
THE YACHTS DO, TOO.
To add premium accommodations to the abundant power of the new 2015 Sierra Denali HD,
we took our lead from a yacht. We put a comfortable, quiet and sophisticated cabin on
top of the proven powertrain of the available Duramax 6.6L V-8 Turbo Diesel and Allison®
transmission. Over 1 million of them are on the road with over 100 billion combined
miles. Inside there’s burnished aluminum trim, a durable soft-touch instrument panel
with contrasting stitching and leather-appointed perforated front seats with dualfirmness foam. Nearly two-thirds of the cab structure is made from high-strength steel,
which contributes to its quiet cabin. All of this proves that Sierra HD is more than just a
truck. It’s incredible thinking in the form of a heavy-duty truck.
THE NEW GMC SIERRA DENALI HD. THAT’S PROFESSIONAL GRADE.

Q&A with Jason AVANT
This week, GameTime catches up with one
of the newest members of the Panthers,
wide receiver Jason Avant. Avant signed
with the Panthers as a free agent after
eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.
How big of an impact did your high
school coach, Willie Simpson, have on
your career as well as your life?
A whole lot, because growing up on the
Southside of Chicago, you can’t just be a
regular football coach just because of the
nature of the surroundings with gangs and
drugs and violence, so he was more of a
father to me rather than a football coach.
He was the first person to come up to me
and let me know I had talent. He worked
diligently to try to keep us off the streets
by occupying our time, coming to take us
to eat, stuff that we couldn’t afford, those
types of things. He was instrumental in my
life and he’s still my favorite coach today
and he still comes to the games and I still
go to Chicago and hang out with him so
he’s still a dad to me not a coach.
If Coach Simpson never steered you
towards the gridiron, how far do you
think you would’ve gone as a basketball
player?
I would’ve been a Division I player but I
probably wouldn’t have made the pros, I
probably would’ve played overseas. He
was both head coach for basketball and football
and he wanted guys to play both sports and he
realized I had more talent in football than basketball. He steered me in the right direction and
gave me the stats by showing me how only three or
four guys got scholarships each year in basketball
whereas there were 25-26 guys getting scholarships each year in football.
In an article in 2010, you stated that, “I know
I’m not supposed to be in the NFL, but I know
there’s a bigger reason for it.” Why is it that
you have chosen to use football as a tool to fix
things in the world as opposed to looking at it
like a job?
“When you have this platform, people listen to
you. Just think about when you were growing up,
it was different when your parents would tell you
something and then your star athlete or favorite
movie star told you the same thing you would take
heed to it and live by it. That is a serious power
that anybody that has fame has the ability to do.
You can use it in two ways where people follow you
down the road of destruction or you can use it in
a positive way to show people that there is a way
out and you can use your platform to tell people
good things. That is what I prefer to do rather than
use it in a negative way and I’m not saying that
I do everything perfectly but I’m just saying that I
realize this is a platform and there are a lot of kids
and older people looking up to me and I want to be
the person that is giving them good stuff so they
can teach their kids values. I want them to say,
“look at that guy, he’s doing it right.”
(continued on next page)

Q&A with JASON AVANT (continued)
Your fans and peers see you as a football player
but more importantly they look up to you as a
leader. What advice do you have for the next
generation?
I think the biggest thing that you can take from
life is that you are more than what you do. I hope
that is the legacy that I leave, I hope it says that,
“you can be a great person and have faith, you
can be a great person and be the nicest guy to
the janitor or the chefs or whoever you are around
where you are the same person, you don’t have
to be the stereotype.” People value someone that
can look them in the eye, shake their hand and
treat them like a regular person because at the
end of the day we are all regular people. If I can
leave anything, it is that God sees us all the same
and that you can make it, you can do it. You don’t
have to be a jerk doing it, you don’t have to do
something bad, you can be a good person and it is
cool to be a good person, it is cool to be who you
are and not compromise. That is the legacy that I
want to leave, to be a real man or woman when
it comes to who you are, I’m not going to allow
somebody to intimidate me in order to do something bad. I know I’m a good person and it is cool
to be a good person and it is not corny.
38
How has it been working under your new position coach Ricky Proehl?
I’ve learned more in this past three or four months
than a large part of my professional career. My
first coach, Coach (David) Culley, he taught me
a whole lot but now Coach Proehl has exceeded
that. He has taken me to a different level with
my mindset and my route technique so I’m looking forward to using some of the moves that he
has taught me. I really enjoy him and I think he
is the best coach in the National Football League,
I don’t know that because I haven’t been around
everyone but in my experience he’s one of the best
ones I’ve ever had.
What unique thing do you have about yourself
that will help connect you with the fans?
“I like doing regular stuff, I play basketball, play
scrabble and play the piano, normal stuff.

Auditions for the TopCats are a comprehensive and intense process. Out of over
100 initial contestants, the final squad of 25 ladies was chosen based on their
personalities, showmanship, dance skills, professionalism and physical fitness.
Richelle Williams is the Choreographer and Manager for the TopCats. She joined
the TopCats staff in 2005, after dancing with the team for five years. She was
a cheer instructor for Universal Cheerleaders Association, and she also cheered
at the University of South Carolina where she earned a BA degree in Mass
Communications.
Shannon McClattie serves as the TopCats Assistant. She was a member of the
TopCats Squad for 11 years and was named cheerleader of the year in 2004 and
represented the organization at the 2005 Pro Bowl. Shannon was a game day field
assistant for four years before joining the TopCats staff.
Kate Milstead, the Entertainment Assistant, is responsible for booking all community and corporate appearances for Sir Purr, the TopCats, and PurrCussion.
Kate interned in the Community Relations Department in 2010 before joining the
Entertainment staff full-time in 2012. She graduated from Florida State University
where she was also a member of the women’s soccer team.

COACH OF THE WEEK SPOTLIGHT
Carolina Panthers
Coach of the Week
By Matt Wilbur
The Carolina Panthers High School Coach of the
Week program recognizes high school coaches
who, through their hard work and dedication to
young people, have made a difference in the
lives of their players, school and community.
This program also provides high schools with
financial assistance to help maintain and upgrade their football programs.
Brian Hales / Butler High School
The Carolina Panthers are proud to announce
the selection of Coach Brian Hales of David
W. Butler High School as the team’s first High
School Coach of the Week for the 2014 season. Coach Hales is in his fourth year as the
head football coach at Butler High School and
continues to lead the Bulldogs to success on
the field.
Coach Hales has achieved numerous accomplishments during his tenure as the Bulldogs
coach. He has led his team to the Southwestern Conference Championship for the previous
three seasons. In 2012, Coach Hales led his
team to the North Carolina 4AA state championship, defeating Jack Britt 56-28. Following the state championship, Hales was
named the Army All-American Bowl Coach of
the Year, American Football Monthly Coach of
the Year, and the Semper Fidelis Coach of the
Year. Hales was awarded the 2013 Charlotte
Observer Coach of the Year after a 10-4 finish.
“Coach Hales instills in his players the need
for a strong work ethic coupled with a strong
desire to win,” stated Courtney Paschal, Athletic Director of Butler.
Hales has not only had success on the field,
but off the field as well. Coach Hales will frequently pop into classrooms to check on the
student-athletes and assist them in any way
he can. He knows the better the communication, the better the chance the student has at
succeeding on the field and in the classroom.
“He wants all of Butler to be the best it can
be and he is a great example of why Butler is
a success both in the classroom and on the
fields and courts of play,” Paschal added.
Coach Hales can also be seen in the community running youth football camps where he
teaches the values of fundamentals and hard
work at the grassroots level.
In recognition of Coach Hales, The Carolina
Panthers will donate $1,000 to Butler High
School to support the school’s athletic department. Coach Hales and the other 2014
Carolina Panthers High School Coach of the
Week honorees will all be recognized during a
Panthers home game later this season.
The 2014 High School Coach of the Week program is a joint initiative of the Carolina Panthers and the National Football League. The
program is designed to recognize and reward
North and South Carolina high school coaches
who have created successful programs for
teams and players both on and off of the playing field. This includes coaches that champion philosophies which advance and promote
player health and safety.

Panthers and NFL Foundation award $200,000 field grant to
West Charlotte High School
The Carolina Panthers in partnership with the
National Football League Foundation Grassroots
Program and Local Initiatives Support Corporation awarded West Charlotte High School with a
$200,000 grant this past Tuesday to assist in the
construction of a new synthetic turf field for the
school. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Project

Recreation Center adjacent to the school’s campus.
MCP&R will serve as the agent for scheduling external community usage.
The grant is the most recent in a series of NFL Grassroots field grants to benefit the region. The Carolina
Panthers have supported similar projects most recently for Spartanburg (SC) School District VII and
York (SC) School District 1.
The Carolina Panthers are pleased to provide the
NFL Grassroots field grant to West Charlotte High
School in partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Schools and Project L.I.F.T.,” said Carolina Panthers
team president Danny Morrison. “Through its proud
history, the school’s football field has served as a
heartbeat of West Charlotte for students, families
and the broader community. From football glory to
show stopping band performances, the field holds a
special place in the history of West Charlotte High
School. We are pleased that the new field will not
only continue to benefit the school and help create
new memories, but will be an asset that will also
serve the community through new recreation opportunities.”
The new synthetic field surface will allow West

Mick’s BAG by Mick Mixon
Do as the Roman do
Veteran safety Roman Harper was not only an astute free
agent pickup because of his savvy, skill and knowledge
of the NFC South, Harper comes to the Panthers with
a healthy contempt of the Atlanta Falcons already in
place! Harper joined Jim Szoke, Eugene Robinson, Jordan Gross and me on the September 8th edition of “Panther Talk”, live from the Red Zone at Bank of America
Stadium.
Eugene: What do you feel you bring to this organization?
Roman: The biggest thing I want to bring to this team is
some leadership, a sense of calming, and that sense of
when I come into the game, my coaches know they can
trust me. I am who I am. I’m going to bring physicality to the game, I’m going to fly around and hit people.
I’m a smart player. I’m going to be in the right place
on the field at all the right times. That’s all I have to
do on this team. I don’t have to be that vocal. We have
those guys here already. We have Pro Bowl guys who are
very talented. I’m just trying to plug and help get us to
the next level, which is deep into the playoffs and to the
Super Bowl.
Jordan: The Saints defense took some strides last year
and got a lot better, but talk about this Panthers defense
and how you would compare the talent here.
Roman: Until I saw our Panthers front seven in person, I
really didn’t have the appreciation for how good they are.
I am so impressed with our defensive linemen and linebackers! I’ve never seen D-linemen have pass drop skills
like these guys do. I saw Charles Johnson covering an
over route 25 yards down the field against Tampa Bay. It
is so impressive to see what they can all do and how they
are used in our scheme. I got an interception against
Tampa Bay all because Charles Johnson had defeated a
blocker and got to the quarterback. All I was doing was
running to the ball and it came right to me because of
the effort Charles made. We don’t have to cover for very
long in the back half because of how much pressure our
front can bring.
Mick: Was their much carryover for you scheme-wise
from what you were used to in New Orleans?
Roman: Not at all. We are more of a zone-scheme team
here. We do a lot of different zone blitzes. We are more
of a four-man pressure team. In New Orleans, it was just
blitz all the time and all I did was play man-to-man behind that, unless it was some Cover Two. Here, we have
all kinds of zone coverages. We play Cover Four, Cover
Two, Cover Six, and some trap coverages, too. And with
our offense here, it is so different for me. New Orleans
was fast break all the time. Against Tampa Bay, we ran
the ball effectively and we possessed the ball for over 35
minutes. That helps a defense so much.
Jordan: You were in the Saints locker room for 8 years,
then you come here and I’m sure you wondered what it’s
gonna be like. How has the vibe been for you in the locker
room?
Roman: Oh man, let me tell you, Jordan, I was so nervous! Because like you said, I had played my whole career there, like you did here with the Panthers. In New
Orleans, I was established in the locker room, so new
players that came in, they had to get to know me. So now
I come here and I’m the new guy! Greg Olsen was the
first guy I met, and he was great. He welcomed me to the
team and he told me, ‘Hey, everybody here is solid.’ That
meant a lot, and I totally agree with him now that I have
had a chance to get to know the guys. They will kid you,
that’s for sure. You can’t go five steps in our locker room
without somebody joking on you. You have to wear certain shoes in there. They say, ‘If Jordan didn’t wear ‘em
on the court you can’t wear ‘em in here!’ Ha! That’s the
craziest thing I ever heard! DeAngelo never stops. He’s
always joking on somebody. RV (Head Athletic Trainer
Ryan Vermillion) and all the training staff, they are the
same way. They want your personality to come out, which
is awesome. I have had a great time here so far and I’m
looking forward to some great years as a Panther.

NFL BAG POLICY
In order to increase public safety and to expidite fan entry
into stadiums, the NFL requires all Stadiums to enforce
a specific bag policy for patrons, media, and employees.

binocular/camera cases, cinch bags, computer bags,
diaper bags, fanny packs, purses larger than 4.5” x 6.5”

RECYCLING
The Carolina Panthers recycle all cans, bottles, and
cardboard generated inside the stadium. In addition, the
Carolina Panthers have partnered with Bojangles, Center
City Partners and Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful in order
to increase our recycling footprint. Volunteers canvass
parking lots within a four block perimeter of the stadium
in order to provide information regarding the program.
Fans parking in participating lots are handed a yellow
bag for cans, bottles and/or cardboard as they enter the
lot. As fans head into the stadium, they can drop off the
bags at a designated curb location in each lot. The City
of Charlotte then picks up the bags and takes the recyclables to the Mecklenburg Recycling Facility (MRF).
Thank you Panthers fans for making today’s game a safe
and enjoyable time for everyone.
