Are you ready for an awesome 2010 ski season? Even if you are not a skier, the
club offers many fun filled events throughout the year, on and off the ski hill!
5 Opening Day
We hope you take advantage of all that the club has to offer. Whether it’s joining
in tailgating fun at BSU (Go Broncos!), Shakespeare, camping out and singing
around the campfire, eating great crab at the Annual Crab Crack with a little
dancing thrown in too, and our annual Champagne Brunch in early September.
Of course, we can’t forget the skiing and fun trips. There is always something to
look forward to and participate in throughout the year.
6 Sun Valley Ski Trip
In addition to all the great fun, the ski trips at discounted prices and the friendships
you gain, there are also various merchant discounts offered to members.
The annual Crab Crack is held at the Officer’s Club at Gowen Field in early
February and is always a hit with our members. You will want to get your
reservation in early.
The annual Ullr Festival in early March always has new surprises in store
for all ages and families and the King and Queen of the Ullr Festival will be
crowned too.

the President
By the time you read this message, I hope everyone has skied
their favorite runs. Hopefully, a lot of snow will fall so that
we have good skiing until April.
Some of the upcoming events include the annual Crab Crack.
For the event to happen , volunteers are needed. It would be
a good way to meet new people and to serve the club.
The annual meeting will be in March. Watch for news about
both these events.
The trips to Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and Switzerland
are full, but the trip to Sun Valley is open and would be a
good way to meet other skiers from Idaho.
I hope 2009 was a good year for every one, and 2010 will be
better one.

BBSC 2009 Holiday Party
Even though we all woke up to snow on the
ground, almost 100 members and guests
drove the slippery road to Star to attend
the annual Bogus Basin Ski Club Holiday
party for 2009.
The room was wonderfully decorated for
the Christmas festivities and a great time
was had by all. Live music was provided
by Ted Hogander, Larry Crawford and Pat
Rice for an evening of song and dance…
as a matter of fact the dance floor was
crowded all night and everyone had a
fantastic time.
The food…well we can’t say enough about
the food. Life’s Kitchen catered the event and
it was delicious to say the least. So delicious
that late comers found very little to eat as
the early birds couldn’t resist themselves.
The desserts were decadent and once again
the wine and beer were plentiful.
A special thanks to all who helped make it
a success. We really appreciate those that
volunteer to make evenings like this so
wonderful.
Thanks to all who attended this very special
evening. We’d also like to wish each and
everyone of you a very Happy New Year!

Opening Day

If you are interested in how the club operates and want to be
more involved, you are needed. The club has always worked
with volunteers with a passion to make a difference. There are
several events coming up. There will be help provided, so don’t

BBSC member Jeff Day, along with 2500 other skiers and snowboarders, enjoyed great snow on Bogus Basin’s opening day. A storm
that dumped two feet of snow in 24 hours allowed Bogus to open
the front side on December 17, which was the same opening date as
2008. Let’s hope that the white stuff continues to fall all winter.

Sun Valley Ski Trip
February 26-28, 2010

Many members have expressed a desire for the club to make a trip
available to Sun Valley. This is your opportunity to experience
world class accommodations and ski one of the best mountains
anywhere. After considering different ideas and options, the
board has made the decision to combine our trip with the
Intermountain Ski Council’s trip. The cost has always been the
main concern. So here’s the deal: $260.00 per person double
occupancy in the condos (with kitchens), two of three day
lift tickets, wine and cheese social Saturday evening along
with a silent auction. There will be an organized pub crawl
Friday evening with the other clubs of the council.
This is a great opportunity for our Bogus Basin clubs members
to meet and ski with club members from throughout our
intermountain region. But time is of the essence. We must
know how many people are going on this trip before January 15
or we will lose the rooms.
If there is enough interest, we will have bus transportation
leaving the morning of Friday, February 26 and returning
Sunday, February 28. The cost would be $30-$50 per person
and we’d need at least 30 members. Otherwise we will organize
a car pool for members.

Now that the season has started and the lifts are up and
running…and loaded with GREASE, I’m passing along
a hint I got from our departed friend Emery Conner. This
was especially useful when I was wearing my yellow ski suit
that was frequently splattered with blobs of grease dripping
from the lift cables. GOOP is the trick. I got mine in the
automotive section of Walmart. Work it into the grease mark,
mixed with a little water, with an old toothbrush, and let it
sit for a little while. Then wash as usual and run it through a
second cycle of the washing machine with no soap and hang
to dry. It works great!
Snowbasin/Powder Mountain and

BBSC has been selling raffle tickets for a ski trip for two and
a season pass to Bogus for three months. At the Holiday
party, lucky winners were picked and I had the privilege
to contact them with the good news. Both winners were
really excited and couldn’t believe their luck.

Scholar Dollars Program
The Bogus Basin Ski Club Board of Directors voted to
provide help to the Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area
by matching contributions from our members for the Scholar
Dollars program up to $2,500. This is a great opportunity for
the club and its members to share the passion we have for the

Refinancing Improves Financial
Picture for Bogus Basin
Home Federal and the USDA Help Secure Program

The financial picture for Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation
Area has improved greatly after completing a major
refinancing program. Bogus Basin’s long term debt has
been consolidated with Home Federal Bank, supported
through a loan guarantee program from the United
States Department of Agriculture. “All of our long-term
lenders have worked very hard on this cooperative effort,”
said Mike Shirley, General Manager. “We are especially
grateful for all their cooperation in this major change.”
During the past two decades, Bogus Basin has completed
more than $25-million in capital spending on upgrades and
addtions. Of that $25-million, a little less than $4-million
is outstanding. Bogus Basin’s annual debt service (principal
and interest) has been about $1.1-million. With this new
20-year, real-estate-based loan facility and backing by the
USDA, that amount has been lowered to some $500,000
annually. “It is very similar to refinancing a home with a
long-term mortgage, replacing multiple short-term home
improvement loans,” added Shirley. Members of Home
Federal Bank’s management helped navigate and negotiate
the new financing model. The refinancing package
includes, in addition, $1million of working capital, Home Federal is also extending a seasonal credit line.
This change makes Bogus Basin’s financial position much
more certain and sustainable in these uncertain economic
times. “We are very gratified with the invaluable help
of Home Federal and the USDA in this very important
financial restructuring,” said Mike Shirley. “It can make
all the difference for us, especially as part of an industry
in which such long-term debt facilities are very rare
indeed.”

New Ride Share
Parking Lot

Bogus Basin has provided for us a new parking lot for those
wanting to share a ride to the mountain. It is located in the heart
of downtown at the intersection of 11th and Bannock. It is across
Bannock on the south side of Boise Plaza or the former Boise
Cascade building. There are about 55 spaces in a paved, lighted,
centrally located parking lot. Look for the blue Bogus Basin signs
to insure you are in the right lot.
For those of you who ski with the Prime Timers or Back Side
Bashers or night ski this is an excellent place to meet.
If you are willing to share a ride post it on Facebook. Look under
groups for Bogus Basin Ski Club.

No Ski &
Snowboard Check
in 2009-10
In an effort to cut costs, Bogus Basin will no longer offer
a Ski and Snowboard check at either lodge. In turn, new
racks have been built to stow gear and Bogus Basin’s Black
Diamond Sports will offer low-cost combination locks for
skis and snowboards. Bogus Basin encourages all guests to
take responsibility for their own gear and keep it secure.
This move will save your non-profit area more than $70,000
annually, one of numerous cost cutting measures taken to
keep skiing and riding affordable at Bogus Basin.
January Events
There are many great events taking place at Bogus Basin in
January, including Winter Feels Good Day at the Nordic
Center and several snowshoe hikes on January 9. For more

Is it Time for New Skis?
How about a Test Drive?

Have your skis seen better days and it’s time to consider a new pair?
Or maybe you simply want to check out the latest ski technology
and give it a try. Keep your eye on the Bogus Basin Event Calendar
or check with your local ski shop and watch for the next “on-hill
demo”. An on-hill demo is when local shops or manufacturer’s
representative take their fleet of current model demo skis up to the
ski area and offer them for you to make a few runs-at no charge! It’s
a great way to test drive several pair of skis on the same day. By skiing
several pair on similar terrain and in similar snow conditions, you
will get a good feel for how each model performs under comparable
conditions. Warning: You might just fall in love!
7. Return to the demo area and check-in the skis with a
representative. They will probably ask what you liked about that
pair of skis and if there is something different you are looking for.
Based on that information, they can suggest a different model.
8. Check-out another pair of skis to try, have the bindings adjusted,
and keep on smiling!
9. Please be considerate of other skiers who may be waiting for the
pair of skis you are trying. An on-hill demo doesn’t mean that a
pair of skis are yours to use for the rest of the day. Remember that
golden rule about sharing!
