The Chamber Working for You
President’s Message
Sally Griffin
2011 President
G
et ready for some
good times
Catonsville! June
is here and this town is
ready to break loose and
do what we do best: get
down, get out and celebrate summer! And when the whole town
comes alive, their presence spills over to
Frederick Road and beyond, and your businesses benefit. So Chamber members, what
do you have planned to capitalize on all this
positive energy?
The farmers markets are already up and
running on Wednesdays and Sundays and
attendance has been great. One thing that I
discovered at the markets are the freshest,
sweetest strawberries ever. People are driving and walking into town expressly for
these markets, so come on down, support
your local farmers and get to know the
people in your community.
Frederick Road Fridays will be bringing
music to the center of town on Friday
evenings starting June 17th, and you can’t
beat the admission price - FREE. I’m sure
between that value (much needed in today’s
economy) and the good music; its popularity will only continue to grow. The buzz on
the street is that it’s a great way to start your
weekend and the whole family can enjoy it.
Again, more people visiting Catonsville!
The Lurman Theatre starts off its’ 20th
season on Saturday, June 4th with the
Catonsville High School Steel Drum Band,
always a crowd favorite. Every Saturday and
Sunday evening you’ll find concert goers
making their way through town and over to
the outdoor theatre on the Catonsville High
Schools grounds. They bring their picnic
baskets, chairs and blankets, then kick back
and enjoy the cool of the evening while listening to fantastic music. Yet again, more
people coming to town.
Then we move onto the 4th of July, the
biggest family day of the year in Catonsville.

the upcoming performance for
Dancers’ United – a
CHF sponsored group on July 9 at the Slayton
House in Columbia. Local dancers, led by
Catonsville local Kaitlin Skirven, will be
performing to raise funds for melanoma
research. The event promises to be a spirited
celebration of life, with a total of five dance
companies performing. Look for opportunities for a little audience participation. So put
on your dancing shoes and come out July 9!
For tickets and information, contact Kaitlin

The Catonsville Women’s Giving Circle
continues to move forward in our effort to
distribute our combined donations to local
non-profits. We now have 35 members, with
almost $9,000 available to distribute in 2011.
So now comes the fun part – we’re looking
2 Greater Catonsville Chamber Newsletter • www.catonsville.org
for deserving Catonsville area nonprofits to
be the recipients of our pooled resources in
2011. And this is where I hope Chamber
members can help out. If you know of an
organization (it must be a 501c3 group),
doing good work in our area that would be
willing to fill out a grant application, please
contact me as soon as possible. Our grants
committee will send out an application, and
all applications will be reviewed this fall.
The current plan is to make distributions in
October, and we’ll celebrate our hard work at
a year-end party.
Of course we would love to have new
members join our ranks, so if you or someone you know may be interested in the
CWGC, please send me an email. We already
have several women in our circle who are
members of the Chamber, but would love to
add to that number.
Thank you so much for your continued
support.

The Chamber Economic Development
COUNTY EXECUTIVE KAMENETZ SELECTS NEW
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
Former New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland Official Chosen to Lead Department
B
altimore County Executive Kevin
Kamenetz completed his leadership team with an announcement that he has selected Daniel C.
Gundersen as the Director of Economic
Development.
Gundersen is currently Senior Advisor
for Econsult Corporation based in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has deep
ties in economic development circles
across the nation and served as a consultant to the White House Task Force on
disaster recovery related to the BP oil
spill, assessing short and long-term economic growth strategies for Gulf communities.
"I am delighted to announce that Dan
Gundersen has accepted my offer to become the Director of Economic Development in Baltimore County," said
Kamenetz. "His incredible track record
of success up and down the east coast is
very exciting.Gundersen recently served
as the Commissioner of New York State
Department of Economic Development
where he is credited with creating comprehensive growth strategies for economic development in upstate New
York. During his tenure, New York rose
from #14 to #1 in 2007 for completed
corporate attraction and expansion, creating 13,000 new jobs and retaining an
additional 30,000 positions.
Prior to his service in the State of New
York, Gundersen served as the Executive
Deputy Secretary for the Pennsylvania
Department of Community and Economic Development. The nominee also
has Maryland ties, having served as the
Assistant Secretary for Business Development from 2000-2003. During that
time, he secured commitments from
85 companies to relocate or expand
to Maryland resulting in 15,000 jobs
created or retained. In the years since
serving as a top Maryland official, he
kept his ties to the area where his wife is
employed and their daughter graduated
from the Park School of Baltimore.
"I am honored that County Executive
Kamenetz is asking me to assume a new
challenge," said Gundersen. "The
County Executive's vision for targeted
economic development is very exciting,
and I look forward to becoming a member of the team that will move that vision
forward. What really grabbed my attention is that County Executive Kamenetz
is consolidating workforce and economic
development efforts. This is a clear message to the business community that he
understands how to leverage economic
growth."
Daniel C. Gundersen
Director of Economic Development
Gundersen is a graduate of the
University of Pennsylvania where he
earned a Masters degree in Government
Administration. He also attended the
Harvard Business School Executive
Education program on global strategy.
Mr. Gundersen currently serves on the
board of the International Economic
Development Council.
Jeff Finkle, President of the International Economic Development Council,
said "Dan is one of the most successful
economic development professionals in
the country today. He's the go-to-guy,
respected for being rich in talent, content, and character."
"We were very deliberate in our search
for an economic development director
because we wanted to get it right," said
Kamenetz. "The stakes are high, and this
is a very important appointment. Mr.
Gundersen's extensive contacts with the
private sector will be invaluable in Baltimore County. He respects and understands the very important role that the
private sector plays in our economy.
That was very important to me. He also
understands that these are very difficult
economic times, and that his challenge
will be to attract and retain businesses at
a time when the Baltimore County government must be innovative, responsible, and efficient. I am confident that he
is up to the challenge."
"I've seen a lot of resumes during my
years on the Council, and Mr. Gundersen's is very impressive," said Council
Chair John Olszewski, Sr. "I can't wait to
hear how he will breathe new life into
economic development in Baltimore
County in the same way he did in both
Pennsylvania and New York. He certainly
has a track record in that area. I congratulate the County Executive on what
appears to be a big-time hire."
Gundersen will serve as the Acting
Director effective June 1. Kamenetz will
submit his nomination to the County
Council for confirmation prior to that
date, and the Council will have forty days
to vote on the request.

classes, reserve a space in a free class,
and shop at the boutique. The event will
begin with a Grand Opening Ribbon
Cutting Ceremony hosted by the
Catonsville Chamber of Commerce.
Imagine a place where you can
de-stress, build strength, increase
flexibility, relieve aches and pains, laugh
a little and shop. Sound too good to be
true? Rolling Brook Yoga Studio &
Boutique will offer all this and more
when it opens for business at 1715
Edmondson Ave. on June 6, 2011. “We’ve
found the perfect place to offer quality
Yoga and Pilates at fair prices with
smaller classes than many of our
competitors,” noted Alecia Flynn, Co-
Director of Rolling Brook Yoga, “We also
have plenty of free parking.”
With yoga for beginning, intermediate
and advanced students as well as Pilates,
Rolling Brook has something for
everyone. Classes are held Monday –
Thursday, mornings and evenings, as well
as Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Rolling Brook’s boutique carries unique
yoga apparel, high-quality yoga
accessories, books and wellness items
sure to lift anyone’s spirit. Visit
www.rollingbrookyoga.com for a
complete schedule of classes, rates,
online registration, and boutique hours.
“This has been a long-time coming. To
celebrate, all classes are free from June
6th through 12th,” announced Rolling
Brook’s Co-Director, Vicki Bannister. To
reserve a space in a free class, visit
www.rollingbrookyoga.com and click on
“Free Classes.”
Yoga’s popularity is on the rise perhaps
because it is a tool for managing the
stress associated with increasing health
care costs and a struggling economy. “By
now most people have at least heard that
yoga is good for them. People are
beginning to see yoga as a way to take
control of their health, especially in a
time when there is so much uncertainty
about the health care system. Physician’s
are even beginning to suggest yoga to
their patients.” indicated Bannister. In
fact, a recent Harvard study showed that
more than 6.3 million Americans use
mind/body therapies, such as yoga,
based on doctor recommendations.
“Yoga truly is for everyone,” explained
Flynn, “We’ve chosen instructors who can
articulate how to move the body into and
out of yoga poses. That level of
instruction makes yoga so much easier
for beginners because some of
movements don’t seem natural at first.
Our teachers take the uncertainty out of
how to do yoga and show them that it can
be done. With good instruction advanced
yogis can learn how to break down
challenging poses into steps, too.”
Yoga is great for toning muscles and
increasing flexibility, but it also calms the
mind, releases tension, and increases
circulation. “Someone may come into the
studio looking for exercise – that’s
wonderful— but more often than not,
they leave having gained so much more;
that is what’s so great about yoga. I love
to see that happen!” said Flynn
enthusiastically, “There is a lot of
curiosity about yoga and we welcome
everyone to give it a try!”
Rolling Brook Yoga was founded by
Vicki Bannister, RYT 200, and Alecia
Flynn, RYT 200, to bring high-quality
affordable yoga to Catonsville. For more

Renewal by Andersen shares these important facts
A little known, but alarming fact is that the average home uses significantly
more energy and is responsible for more carbon emissions than the average
automobile.* Making homes more energy efficient benefits property values,
neighborhood livability, and keeps older homes relevant longer. Replacing
inefficient windows and doors is beneficial in lowering your energy cost and
consumption, and gives you more control of your comfort and pocketbook.

Starting with the placement of chairs
on Frederick Road, weeks in advance I
might add, to get the best seats for the
parade, to ending the day watching the
fireworks at Catonsville High School,
thousands of people descend upon our
town for the festivities.
While these are the community
events that bring our neighbors/
consumers into town, I have not even
touched upon the numerous proms,
graduations, weddings and family
reunions being celebrated. This ain’t no
Sleepy Hollow we live in!
So I’ll ask you again. What have you
put into your business plan to capitalize
on all this energy?
See you around town!
