President’s Message
Cathy Schneider
2016 President
H
ope everyone is
having a GREAT
summer!
Our Chamber has
been busy this summer
continuing to support
economic development
in Catonsville with our
weekly Frederick Road Fridays summer concerts. Although the weather has not been
ideal every week the average attendance by
our concertgoers has still been an amazing
1,390, and we are proud to report that we
have donated over $8,000 to our nonprofit
partners who come out on a weekly basis
and help us make Frederick Road Fridays
successful.
A huge thank you must go out to the 24
sponsors who have volunteered their time,
provided us with their services and have
given monetary donations to support the
concerts. For a full list of this year’s sponsors
please visit our designated FRF page on our
website: http://catonsville.org/events/frederickroad-fridays.php
In addition, we continue to receive
calls, e-mails and messages that the local
Catonsville restaurants and businesses have
directly benefited from this event. We could
not put on these concerts without Teal, Kate
and Jackie from our Chamber office and Dan
Swearingen (committee chair) who continue
to coordinate all aspects of this event. DyAnn
Moreé who recruits additional volunteers
each week for the Chamber table also deserves a huge thank you. This year so far
those volunteers have included Chamber
Board members, the staff of Sterling Ashton
Schwab Witzke Funeral Home, representatives RE/MAX New Beginnings, Frank of
Frank’s Fitness, the staff from Narcissus
Salon, the staff from Guidewell Financial Solutions, Dan Bougher from Top Turf, Sidney
Carter from Kids of Catonsville Performing
Arts Club, Coldwell Banker agents and the
FRF committee members. THANK YOU
VOLUNTEERS!!!!!
This is a good time to also mark your
calendar for other great events that are
coming up this summer. Our annual Arts and
Craft Festival is September 11th and the annual Crab Feast is scheduled for September
30th. These are two community events that
can’t be missed. More details are in this
newsletter and on our Chamber website. If
you are interested in being a sponsor at these
or any events please contact Teal Cary in our
Chamber office. All of the chamber-hosted
events provide a great marketing opportunity
for your business.
Lastly, if you haven’t yet, please “Like” the
Chamber’s Facebook page and follow us on
Twitter and share our events. You can help us
get the word. Also, we would love to see you
post our events on your pages! Facebook is a
great and free way for all of us to brand our
companies and make new connections while
supporting our Chamber of Commerce.

MASTERING THE ART BEHIND THE MOST
POWERFUL TOOL YOU HAVE AS A LEADER
Plus, 3 tips you can use right away
Dennis Sullivan,
Executive Director
Center for Business
Innovation, CCBC

I
want to tell you
a story about the
most effective
presentation I ever
witnessed and how
he still influences me more than 20 years
later.
The late Steven Covey, author of the
best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly
Effective People, was the featured speaker.
As he took the stage in the windowless
convention hall, he asked everyone to
stand up. “I want you to close your eyes,”
he began. “Keep your eyes closed, and
think about where you think North is located. Next, I want you to point to where
you think North is located.” He paused.
“Remain pointing and open your eyes.”
As we looked around the room everyone laughed. It looked as if everyone was
pointing in different directions. A few,
completely lost, pointed towards the ceiling.
“Those who are absolutely convinced
they know where North is located remain
standing and pointing to where you think
North is located and everyone else can sit
down,” he said. Fewer people remained
standing, but they were all still pointing in
completely different directions – and yet
all felt they were absolutely right and
everyone else was wrong. He pulled out a
compass and pointed to where North was
actually located.
He then began his speech by talking
about all the different directions we can
choose to follow in life, but without some
sort of guide for us to follow we’re just
guessing – even if we think we’re right.
It was one of the most powerful openings by a speaker I had ever witnessed. I
remember it vividly even today. I can’t tell
you what all 7 habits are, but I do remember that opening.
Why? Because it was engaging. It involved all of the senses. It was fun and it
left a vivid image in my mind, as well as
hundreds of other people in the audience
that day, that illustrated the point of his
message: We all need a compass to follow
or who knows where we’ll end up.
As the leader of your organization, you
often find yourself in the position of presenting an idea or delivering your message. It may be in front of hundreds of
people, like Steven Covey did many years
ago, or to just a few employees by your
desk. As a leader, effective speaking is one
of the most powerful skills you can possess.
Speaking, however, is an art – not a science.
Some of the best speakers are those
featured on TED. I love the fact that they
can often take complex information and
package it into a compelling story in less
time than it takes to cook a box of Rice-aRoni. So I’m often more intrigued by how
the content is crafted into a presentation
with very few slides and often nothing
more than a microphone and a stage.
In fact, I just attended a conference two
weeks ago. As I sat there in the audience, I
recall feeling that I was getting good ideas
and advice from the speakers. However, I
don’t remember any of the charts or bullet
points from any of the presentations –
except one. The speaker started an organization called, Because I Said I Would,
which is founded on the idea of encouraging others to keep their promises. I don’t
even remember his name, but I can tell
you about the eulogy he wrote for his
deceased father, I can tell you about the
moment he decided to quit his job and
begin his non-profit organization, and I
can tell you the stories of the little girl
whose life has been changed.
Why? We remember stories. They grab
our attention. They are naturally engaging. They help us to remember. And they
are one of the most effective tools you
4 Greater Catonsville Chamber Newsletter • www.catonsville.org
have to get others to follow. Over the
years, I have worked with many speakers
just like Steven Covey. Here are the 3 most
effective techniques to get others to listen
to what you have to say:
1
Get right into your presentation and
grab your audience’s attention with
your opening sentence. Start with a
personal story as you take the audience
on a journey with you that illustrates why
someone should care about what you
have to say.
2
Share your experiences – and the experiences of others you have worked
with in the past. This is where your
passion can come alive. Show why you’re
so passionate about your topic and how it
connects with your message.
3
Focus on sharing just one or two
things most people don’t already
know. Everyone has a thirst for
knowledge. Tap into that natural desire we
all have to explore ideas and teach your
audience something that they didn’t know
before.
Think about your own experiences
listening to a speaker. I would bet that you
don’t recall much of the content at all –
but you may remember a story they told.
Quick quiz: what are the 3 techniques I
just mentioned? It’s tough to answer that
question without re-reading it.
Last question: How did Steven Covey
open his presentation?

SMALL-BUSINESS OWNERS
MUST PROTECT THEIR FUTURES
Matthew Dunigan
Edward Jones Financial Advisor
Contributing View Columnist
I
f you’re a small-business owner, you think a lot
about today. Is your cash flow sufficient …
today? Are your products and services
competitive … today? Are you confident in your
marketing and advertising efforts … today? And
because you are so focused on today, you may be
neglecting a key aspect of tomorrow – your retirement. Specifically,
do you have a good retirement plan for yourself?
Given that your personal finances are so tied up with your business, your plans for the business will obviously greatly affect your
financial situation when you retire. Whether you want to transfer the
business to another family member, sell it outright to someone else,
or possibly just wind it down, you’ll need to plan ahead and consult
with your legal and tax advisors.
However, you can take steps now to help ensure you can enjoy a
comfortable retirement. You have access to a variety of retirement
plans appropriate for small-business owners, including these:
• Owner-only 401(k) – This plan, also known as an individual or a
“solo” 401(k), is available to self-employed individuals and business
owners with no full-time employees other than themselves or a
spouse. As the owner, you can contribute to your plan as both an
employer and an employee; your total contribution limit for 2016 is
$53,000, or $59,000 if you are 50 or older.
• SEP IRA – If you have just a few employees or are self-employed
with no employees, you might consider a SEP IRA. You’ll fund the
plan with tax-deductible contributions, and you must cover all
eligible employees. (Employees themselves cannot contribute.) You
can contribute up to 25% of compensation, up to $53,000 annually.
(Contributions for a self-employed individual are limited to 25% of
compensation minus one-half of self-employment taxes.) And you
can fund your SEP IRA with many different types of investments.
Plus, you can establish a SEP IRA for 2016 until April 17, 2017.
• Defined benefit plan – Pension plans, also known as defined
benefit plans, have become less prevalent in recent years – but you
can still set one up for yourself if you are self-employed or own your
own business. This plan has high contribution limits, which are determined by an actuarial calculation, and as is the case with other retirement plans, your contributions are typically tax-deductible.
• SIMPLE IRA – As its name suggests, a SIMPLE IRA is easy to set
up and maintain, and can be a good plan if your business has fewer
than 10 employees. Still, while a SIMPLE IRA may be advantageous
for your employees, it’s less generous to you, as far as allowable contributions, than an owner-only 401(k), a SEP IRA or a defined benefit
plan. For 2016, your annual contributions are generally limited to
$12,500, or $15,500 if you’re 50 or older by the end of the year. You
can also make a matching contribution of up to 3% of your compensation.
You need to establish a SIMPLE IRA between Jan. 1 and Oct. 1 of
any year. In fact, if you’d like to set up any of the retirement plans
we’ve looked at, don’t delay. The sooner you open your plan, the
more years you will have to contribute – and, as you know, time is
often an investor’s best friend.

CATONSVILLE ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL-
A VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY
THAT PROMOTES YOUR BUSINESS
T
he Catonsville Arts & Crafts Festival, now in its 43rd
year and organized and hosted by the Chamber, is one
of our community’s premier events. Bringing an estimated 25,000 patrons to our village each year, this event is a
perfect venue for our chamber members to find new customers and spread the word about their business.
Whether you are trying to differentiate your brand from the
competition, increase your number of loyal customers, create
company or product awareness and visibility, or looking for
ways to drive retail traffic or sales, having the opportunity to
meet thousands of potential customers in one day is priceless.
One no-cost way to promote your business at the festival is
to volunteer at the Chamber’s booth. There you can help
distribute gift bags to the festival patrons while handing out
your own company’s promotional materials. Just an hour or
two of your time could lead to new customers.
The Catonsville Arts and Crafts Festival will be held on
Sunday, September 11, 2016.
Call Teal Cary, 410-719-9609 today to take advantage of this
outstanding marketing opportunity and sign-up to
volunteer at this year’s festival.

dramatic improvements to one of the

The Children’s Home has received just

rhubarb? Many farmers markets offer
lesser known fruits and vegetables, providing a variety that can be both tasty
and nutritious.

PURCHASING YOUR FIRST
RENTAL PROPERTY
Catherine Burke, Providence Realty
Y
ou are ready to purchase your first rental property, so
naturally there are going to be a few things that you want to
be aware of now. Maryland has a number of requirements
surrounding property management and there is always new legislation that passes each year in the Maryland General Assembly
concerning real estate in general and, in some cases, concerning
rental properties. This web link - http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/
overview-landlord-tenant-laws-maryland.html is a good place to find comprehensive information on Maryland requirements for disclosures, security
deposits, rental payments, landlord access to property, eviction notices and
much more. This site allows a potential landlord to drill down to the specifics.
This year’s Maryland General Assembly passed two bills that will affect owners of
rental properties. The first bill (HB849/SB 182) states that Carbon Monoxide
alarms are going to be required on each level of a rental unit beginning October
1, 2016 (beginning April 1, 2018 the detector will be required to be outside of
sleeping areas as well), the second bill (HB1059) states that a receipt for the
security deposit must be included in a written lease beginning October 1, 2016.
