President’s Message
Sally Griffin
2013 President
I
just received my
crisp new 2013-2014
Chamber of
Commerce Business
Directory! I truly love
this book! For me, there
is something exciting
about opening the new edition and checking it out. First, I take notice of which
pictures were chosen to make the front
cover (they make me smile and bring back
good memories). Then, I flip through the
book and check out the ads, some new,
some old and familiar, all of them telling a
story about our community. Lastly, I place it
on my desk, right beside my phone. I feel it
is my responsibility to USE the Business
Directory and support my fellow chamber
members.
No doubt I open this book up on a daily
basis and refer my clients, friends, family,
neighbors, coworkers, whomever. The
conversation usually starts with “Do you

know of someone who …, Do you know
where I can get…, Do you know who
can…”? I give the book out to anyone and
everyone because I’m so proud of what
Catonsville has to offer and I want to share
our business “bible”.
You see, everyone who advertised in the
directory is in the same boat that I am in.
We all wake up in the morning, put a smile
on our face, head into the office and work
tirelessly to make our business the best it
can be. We are in charge of our own success.
We grow by referral. What better way to
show support for each other than to know
who is in the book and use their services?
The chamber has the book in electronic
form, but for me, nothing beats flipping
through the pages, dog earring a favorite
page, wearing it down day by day until the
year passes and a new one comes out.
Please don’t let this great resource just lie
around and collect dust. Flip through it,
wear it down and endorse your fellow
chamber members!

VERY SUCCESSFUL TASTE
SETS NEW RECORD FOR
ATTENDANCE
O
ur members are The Chamber.
And the members involved in
this year’s Taste of Catonsville did
an unbelievable job on Monday, June 3
promoting Catonsville and their own
businesses.
This year's Taste of Catonsville drew the
largest crowd it has ever seen - 351 guests!!
That was an increase of 147 visitors from
the year before. Improvements to the
Taste that included cooking demonstrations; wine and beer tastings; live music;
an expanded layout that included two
floors; and vendors from the Chamber’s
other signature events proved to be just
the right ingredients to spur new interest
in an event that was celebrating its 17th
year.
Comments such as, “This was the best
Taste we have ever been to” and “ This
was my first time and I loved it,” were
heard over and over by the committee
members and participants. We knew we
had a hit when a flood of visitors came in
when the doors opened at 6:00 and at
9:00 guests were slow to leave.
We thank this year’s participants for
making the 2013 Taste such an amazing
success. Your support and effort made

SPRING BRINGS TICKS & LYME
DISEASE-Doctors Available
To Speak About Symptoms &
Treatments
W
armer weather and longer days
mean more people are enjoying
the great outdoors. However,
spring is also prime time for ticks. These
tiny, biting creatures feed on warmblooded animals, including people, and
can transmit serious illness through
their bites. Those illnesses include infections, skin rashes, and Lyme disease.
Ticks usually live on tall grass and in
wooded areas, but also can be brought
into your home by pets or on clothing.
While it’s a good idea to take precautions
year-round, you should be extra cautious
during warmer months when ticks are
most active. Lyme disease symptoms
usually appear in one to two weeks after
a bite and include:
• Bulls-eye rash (erythema migrans)

CATONSVILLE CHAIR PROJECT
Bringing Businesses & Residents Together
to Support Revitalization Efforts
K
eep your eyes out in this summer
for the custom designed painted
Adirondack chairs that will be
decorating Catonsville. They are part of
the Catonsville Chair Project, a project
spearheaded by the Catonsville Chamber
of Commerce’s Economic Development
Committee. Each chair was sponsored by
a local business, and that business was
paired with a local artist who transformed
the Adirondack chair into a beautiful
work of art.
The chairs will be on display during the
summer starting at the first Frederick Rd.
Friday’s concert on June 14 at The Mews
on Mellor. Throughout the summer the
public will have the opportunity to bid on
these chairs in a summer long silent
auction. Go to the chamber’s website at
www.catonsville.org for more information
on how to bid on your favorite chair. The
auction begins on June 14 and runs until
Sept. 6, 2013. The highest bid wins, so
make sure your bid brings your favorite
chair home to your front porch! Chairs
will remain on display until The
Catonsville Arts and Crafts Festival on
Sunday, Sept. 8 at which time the auction
winners will be announced.
The proceeds from the chair project
and auction will help fund revitalization
projects throughout the commercial district. An improved commercial district
makes Catonsville more attractive to the
community; it attracts customers to local
merchants, and encourages new higherend businesses to relocate there.
The Catonsville Chair project is a fun
way to bring local businesses, artists and
residents together with the profits earned
going to help revitalize the town we love.

IF RATES RISE, WHAT SHOULD
YOU DO WITH BONDS?
Matthew Dunigan
Edward Jones Financial Advisor
Contributing View Columnist
I
nterest rates are at historic lows. But they will rise eventually.
If you invest in fixed-income vehicles, such as bonds, what
might higher rates mean for you?
As is almost always the case in the investment world, there’s
no simple answer. First, it’s important to distinguish between
short-term and long-term interest rates. The Federal Reserve is determined to
keep short-term rates low until unemployment improves, but, in the meantime,
longer-term rates may well rise.
Depending on your situation, a rise in long-term rates can present both opportunity and concern. The opportunity: Rising rates can mean greater income
if you invest in newly issued bonds. The concern: If you already own longer-term
bonds, and rates rise, the value of your bonds will fall. That’s because other investors won’t want to pay full price for your bonds when they can get new ones at
higher rates.
Even if the value of your long-term bonds falls, isn’t it worthwhile to hold on to
them? After all, as long as your bond doesn’t default — and if the bond is considered “investment grade,” a default is unlikely — you will get a steady source of income and you’ll receive the full value of your bond back at maturity. Aren’t these
valuable benefits?
They are indeed — but they may be more relevant for short-term bonds.
Longer-term bonds — those of 10-year duration or longer — are more subject to
inflation risk than shorter-term bonds. Of course, we’ve experienced low inflation for a number of years, but, over time, even mild inflation can add up. When
this happens, and you own a long-term bond whose rate doesn’t change, you
could face a potential loss of purchasing power. One of the reasons that longterm bonds pay higher interest rates than short-term bonds is because the
issuers of longer-term instruments are rewarding you for taking on this
additional inflation risk.
Consequently, simply holding on to long-term bonds — especially very longterm ones, such as those that mature in 30 years — may not be the best strategy.
If you review your fixed-income holdings and find that they skew strongly toward
longer-term bonds, you may want to consider reducing your exposure in this
area. If you did sell some of these bonds, you could use the proceeds to help
build a “bond ladder” — which may be one of the best ways to invest in bonds.
To create this ladder, you need to invest in bonds of varying maturities. When
market rates are low, you’ll still have your longer-term bonds earning higher
interest rates, thereby paying you more income. And when market rates rise,
you can reinvest your maturing short-term bonds at the higher rates. You must
evaluate whether the bonds held within the bond ladder are consistent with your
investment objectives, risk tolerance and financial circumstances.
If you own bonds, you do need to be aware of where interest rates are — and
where they may be headed. Nonetheless, as we have seen, you don’t have to be
at the mercy of rate movements. By keeping yourself informed and choosing the
right strategies, you can benefit from owning bonds and other fixed-income
vehicles in all interest-rate environments.
Before investing in bonds, you should understand the risks involved, including
credit risk and market risk. Bond investments are subject to interest rate risk
such that when interest rates rise, the prices of bonds can decrease, and the
investor can lose principal value if the investment is sold prior to maturity

They Came Out in ‘Droves’
for Drove
B
ill’s Music recently welcomed clinician and legendary metal drummer for Megadeth, Shawn Drover.
Representing the dDrum brand, Drover
executed complex drum grooves, fills &
licks for an enthusiastic crowd. Over 150
people gathered around Bill’s outdoor
bandstand to hear some great music,
win giveaway contests and pick up some
new techniques from the established
drum clinician & and performer. Drover
will go on tour this Summer with
Megadeth while their new album Super
Collider will release in June 2013.
“It was cool how Drover demonstrated
parts of songs where it’s so much more
helpful to see the musician play, rather
than just hearing it. We all learned a lot,
it was a great afternoon.” – Derick

“Being a part of this project was such an
honor for me because I knew that what I
was doing was going to better the lives of
others. This Blue Drop Award is the icing
on the cake.”
The Blue Drop Awards aim to recognize the excellent work that has been created with Drupal, an open source
content management system, over the
past year in a variety of categories. The
Drupal community nominates projects,
and finalists are selected by the Blue Drop
Committee based on innovation, content,
structure & navigation, visual design,
functionality and overall experience.
Catapult is additionally powering
Gucci’s campaign Chime for Change, a
global campaign to raise money and
awareness for women and girls. Celebrities such as Beyonce Knowles, Bill Gates,
Salma Hayek, and Sarah Silverman have
backed this movement.
