ACP is a member of Festvial of Light, an international consortium of photography festivals
In 1997, a seed was planted during a conversation between two people on a
road trip. They were brainstorming about how to build stronger connections
between photographers. Why not have an event that would bring everyone
together to form a real photography community in Atlanta?
The next year a 501(c)(3) was formed and ACP’s first event, a lecture and
dinner, was attended by 100 people. ACP’s tradition of partnering with
other organizations was evident from its earliest beginnings. From a single
successful event, the festival has grown to almost 150 events, exhibitions
and experiences showcasing almost 1000 photographers.
[ happy birthday to acp ]
Happy Birthday to ACP—we’re 15 years old!
The ACP Festival is currently the largest annual community-oriented
photography festival in the United States!
Our vision? Through excellent, highly-relevant programming, Atlanta
Celebrates Photography will help make Atlanta a 21st century, international
hub for photography.
Why? Photography touches everyone’s life, every single day. It is the way
we share our stories. It is the language that we speak—the medium of
our era.
Photographs transcend language barriers. They communicate power, love,
tragedy and beauty. Photography is the common thread that connects ACP
to so many people of all ages, all races and all places.
Lets Celebrate Together!

New ACP Program Gives Teens With Cameras and Pens a New Perspective
t

What does a portrait say about a person? What does it leave to the imagination? These are questions being explored by teens admitted to Scottish Rite
and Egleston children’s hospitals. It’s part of a special program created by ACP
to comfort those with chronic illnesses who often find the hospital to be their
second home for weeks, even months.
A team of volunteers, led by Corinne Adams, organizes the groups and
their discussions on portraiture. The teens first take self-portraits, then
perform a writing exercise that’s raw and heartfelt.
This expressive outlet is proving to be tranformative for the patients,
who are just discovering who they are. The hospital environment doesn’t
allow for much control, so this program gives teens control of the camera
and the freedom to express themselves. The end results are powerful
portraits and statements such as the ones to the right.
ACP would like to express its gratitude to the outstanding Child Life
Specialists at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta; to Bill Boling, the project’s
founder; to Showcase; to Morris, Manning and Martin; to Digital Arts Studio;
to Charlotte Dixon; and to the incredible volunteers for being so integral to
the success of this program.
See for yourself at the exhibit at Wing and a Prayer Studio (see page 36
for more info).
My name is Shuron,
and I am the abnorm.
When you look at a
person, you wonder how
does that person get
along with their day.
Normal is just a word.
No one is normal.
Everyone has a diagnosis.
But no one’s diagnosis
defines them.
What is really normal?
Is normal a form of
judgement?
Normal is just a setting
on a washing machine.

Nicholas Nixon
Behind the Lens with this Year’s Keynote Speaker
Since the 1970s, Boston-based photographer Nicholas
Nixon (born Detroit, 1947) has practiced large-format
portraiture and documentary photography, forging a rich
and varied body of work celebrated for its humanistic
approach and meticulous detail. Nixon rose to prominence after being included in the
groundbreaking 1975 New Topographics exhibit at the
George Eastman House in Rochester, New York—a show
that is widely considered a turning point in the history of
landscape photography. Nixon’s subsequent subjects have
ranged from porch life in the rural South, the intimacy
shared between couples, cityscapes, and schools in the
Boston metropolitan area. He has become particularly
well known for his close depictions of family, which simultaneously bear a personal meaning to the artist, while
communicating on a universal level.
Nixon’s best-known series, The Brown Sisters is a
serial portrait study that began in 1975 and continues
today. Each year, the photographer records an image of
his wife Beverly (Bebe) Brown together with her three
sisters. Setting up his 8- x 10-inch camera at eye level
with his subjects, Nixon captures the sisters congregated
together in the same order from left to right, recording
their incremental aging and evolving demeanor over time.
Although multiple exposures are made, only one is chosen
to represent the women in print each year. Nixon received his B.A. in English from the University of Michigan in 1969 and M.F.A. from the University
of New Mexico in 1974. Since 1975, Nixon has worked as
a part-time professor of photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He is the recipient of
three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and
two Guggenheim Fellowships, and has had solo exhibitions at major museums including the Museum of Modern
Art (1976, 1988), Art Institute of Chicago (1985) and the
Victoria and Albert Museum (1989). His work is included
[ Nicholas Nixon ]
in collections at the High Museum of
Art, Atlanta; Metropolitan Museum
of Art, New York; Museum of Modern
Art, New York; the Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston and the San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art, among
numerous others. Thanks to the generous promised
gift of Lucinda Bunnen, the High is
one of the few institutions nationwide
that will act as a repository for the
entire vintage set of Nixon’s Brown
Sisters prints.

American
Beauty
Dr. Deborah Willis discusses her
exhibit Posing Beauty in African
American Culture
Deborah Willis, Ph.D. is one of the nation’s leading historians of African American photography and curators
of African American culture. She is currently the chair of
the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch
School of the Arts at New York University and has an
affiliated appointment as a university professor with
the College of Arts and Sciences, Africana Studies.
She was a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fletcher Fellow and a
MacArthur Fellow. Dr. Willis is the author of Reflections In
Black: A History of Black Photographers–1840 to the Present and Let Your Motto Be Resistance. Her book Michelle
Obama: The First Lady in Photographs received the 2010
NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work–
Biography/Autobiography. She has exhibited her photographs at the Zora Neale Hurston Museum in Eatonville,
Florida, and just released two books:
the co-authored book Envisioning
Emancipation: Black Americans and
the End of Slavery and Out [o] Fashion Photography: Embracing Beauty.
The Spelman College Museum
of Fine Art is the first institution in
Posing Beauty explores how
beauty is realized by both the subject
and the photographer. It also asks
us to think critically about the notion
of beauty.
Reframing “Black is Beautiful”
Conversation with the Curator
Join us on Thursday, October 17, at
7 p.m. when Dr. Willis leads a conversation examining and challenging
conventional perspectives on identity, beauty, cosmopolitanism and
community in Africa and the African
Diaspora. She will also examine the
relationship between beauty and politics and how such topics have shaped
a new understanding of reading black
culture from the antebellum period to
the present. Doors open at 6:30pm.
Posing Beauty in African American
Culture is organized by Curatorial
Assistance Traveling Exhibitions,
Pasadena, California. The Museum
acknowledges support from the Wish
Foundation and the LUBO Fund.

the Southeast to present Dr. Willis’
nationally touring exhibition Posing
Beauty in African American Culture
(September 5–December 7). Featuring more than 75 photographs by
leading, emerging and amateur photographers, it explores the ways in
which our contemporary understanding of beauty has been informed by
photographers and artists working
from 1890 to the present. It incorporates a diverse range of media
including photography, film, video,
fashion, advertising and other forms
of popular culture. It also prompts
rich discussions about the contested
ways that African and African American beauty have been represented in
historical and contemporary contexts.
Posing Beauty does not define
beauty. Instead, it considers the idea
of black beauty in photography; how
it is posed, constructed, imagined,
reviewed, critiqued and contested in
art, the media and everyday culture.
This groundbreaking project is rooted
in the belief that beauty is empowering in black culture.

The Merits of a
Portfolio Review
And why every photographer
should have one
If you’re serious about photography, then take your passion
to the next level and participate in a portfolio review. For indepth advice, there’s no better outlet, and you won’t find a
unique event like this for painters or sculptors.
For photographers unfamiliar with the review process, it
basically works like this— you select roughly two dozen of
your favorite photographs and arrange for a private consultation with a photographic expert to discuss your work in
detail. The ACP Portfolio Review and Walk offers artists the
opportunity to meet with highly respected museum curators, gallery owners, photo editors, and agency representatives from across the United States and beyond—all in a
single day, and with minimal expense.
You can expect the reviewer to discuss the merits of the
photographs such as your obvious strengths, the success of
your concept, and the appropriateness of your technique.
The reviewer will also discuss areas for improvement and
possible markets for your work.
It is a great idea to come prepared with a digital recorder
or a notebook so that you don’t miss any pearls of wisdom
or important names. You should also come prepared with
questions. This is a conversation, and the more you engage
your reviewer, the more invaluable your experience will be.
We can almost guarantee you will become a better
presenter of your work. And you will receive useful advice
pertaining to your technique, your concept, and possible
avenues for further research or connections. Other benefits
may include a gallery show, a museum acquisition, or the
opportunity to have your work published. It is not uncommon for opportunities to arise several years down the road
of photo lovers attend: students, teachers, families, gallery
owners, photographers, and photography collectors (participants can sometimes recoup all their expenses through
photo sales at this event). This is such a rewarding way to
end an incredible experience.
As in all other areas of life, the most important things you
can do after the review are to implement lessons learned
and follow up on all leads. Some recent feedback from past
ACP Portfolio Review attendees:
[ portfolio review ]
after a portfolio review, particularly if your work is unique
and leaves an impression on the reviewers.
At the review event, you will be surrounded by dozens of
other photographers, your colleagues. Meeting these photographers is a huge part of the event, and every year ACP
hears of incredible opportunities and lasting friendships that
arise from these connections.
After a long day of portfolio reviews, ACP hosts the
Portfolio Walk. This gives participating photographers the
opportunity to casually present their work and interact
with the general public at an evening reception. Hundreds
“As a direct result of participating in the portfolio review, I
have since had my first solo show in Atlanta! I was also able
to make professional connections with galleries and other
artists that continue to open doors for my work.”
“I was in the ACP Portfolio Review and thanks to that, I am
now in a ‘Landscape’ group exhibition in Inner Mongolia,
China.”
“The portfolio event is a really great resource! I am going to
be part of Fraction magazine’s December edition because
of my meeting. I also met with the Blue Sky folks, and they
seemed very interested in my work.”
“I sold six prints at the ACP Portfolio Walk...and became a
better presenter of my work”

Detroit, 1947) has practiced large-format portraiture and documentary
photography, forging a rich and varied body of work celebrated for its
humanistic approach and meticulous detail.
Nixon’s best-known series, The Brown Sisters is a serial portrait study
that began in 1975 and continues to the present. His work is included in
collections at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Metropolitan Museum
of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of
Fine Arts, Boston and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among
numerous others.
Thanks to the generous promised gift of Lucinda Bunnen, the High is
one of the few institutions nationwide that will act as a repository for the
entire vintage set of Nixon’s Brown Sisters prints.

Pedestrians traversing the Atlanta BeltLine’s hiking trail alongside Piedmont Park will happen upon a temporary installation of inward-facing
billboards by Gregor Turk. Over the course of the ACP Festival and Art
on the Atlanta BeltLine (September through November), the billboards
will undergo three “exhibitions” that talk about place in different ways—
the first of which will feature photographs of blank billboards across
the United States taken by Turk over the course of the last 20 years, a
self-referential apparition. The billboards will then “vanish” revealing the
Atlanta that had been obscured, and we will then be left with pairs of
gazing eyes...the eyes of General Sherman. His apparition is a reminder
of the history of Atlanta as integral to our sense of place.
ACP would like to thank Art on the Atlanta BeltLine for their
partnership with this project.

Journey around the world with National Geographic photographer
Alison Wright, as she captures the universal human spirit through her
lens. Ms. Wright, a New York-based documentary photographer, has
spent a career capturing the universal human spirit through her photographs and writing. A recipient of the Dorothea Lange Award in Documentary Photography for her work with child labor in Asia, Alison travels
to the remotest regions of the globe photographing endangered cultures
and people, while covering issues concerning the human condition for
many of her projects. The photos from her latest book, Face to Face:
Portraits of the Human Spirit portrays the indomitable spirit that lives
within us all. It is what bonds us as mankind, a continued thread, as
together we continue on this journey in the pilgrimage of life.
Wright’s photography has been published in a number of National Geographic books and publications, Outside, Islands, Smithsonian Magazine,
American Photo, Natural History, Time and The New York Times. Wright’s
life was nearly cut short during a horrific bus accident on a remote jungle
road in Laos and her recent memoir, Learning to Breathe: One Woman’s
Journey of Spirit and Survival chronicles her inspirational story of
survival, years of rehabilitation, and ongoing determination to recover
and continue to travel the world as an intrepid photojournalist.

ACP Lecture Series: Deborah Willis, Ph.D.
October 17 @ Spelman College Museum of Fine Art
Work by Deborah Willis
Curator’s talk
Thu, Oct 17, 7pm
Deborah Willis, Ph.D. is one of the nation’s leading historians of African American
photography and curators of African American culture. She is currently the Chair
of the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at
New York University. Dr. Willis is also a prolific author.
The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art is the first institution in the Southeast to
present Dr. Willis’ nationally touring exhibition Posing Beauty in African American
Culture (September 5 – December 7). This exhibition explores the ways in which our
contemporary understanding of beauty has been informed by photographers and
artists working from 1890 to the present.
For this event, Dr. Willis leads a conversation examining and challenging conventional perspectives on identity, beauty, cosmopolitanism, and community in Africa
and the African Diaspora. She will also examine the relationship between beauty
and politics and how such topics have shaped a new understanding of reading
black culture from the antebellum period to the present.
This program is organized in partnership with the Spelman College Museum of
Fine Art and is part of the Spelman College Ida B. Wells-Barnett Distinguished
Lecture Series.

ACP Special Exhibition: Teen Spirit
October 19 @ Wing & A Prayer Studio
Special Reception
Sat, Oct 19, 1–4pm
What does a portrait say about a person? What does it leave to the
imagination? These are questions being explored by teens admitted to
Scottish Rite and Egleston children’s hospitals. It’s part of a special program created by ACP to comfort those with chronic illnesses who often
find the hospital to be their second home for weeks, even months. This
is their opportunity to take control of the camera, create portraits of one
another, and then share their thoughts in writings such as this:
© BIANCA
“My name is Shuron, and I am the abnorm.
When you look at a person, you wonder how does that
person get along with their day.
Normal is just a word. No one is normal
Everyone has a diagnosis. But no one’s diagnosis defines them.
What is really normal? Is normal a form of judgment?
Normal is just a setting on a washing machine.”
This exhibition is on view before the special reception on Thu and Fri.,
10am-4pm.
This special exhibition, co-sponsored by Morris, Manning and Martin,
LLP., Charlotte Dixon, and Showcase Photographics, features both still
portraits made by teens and a video documentary of their creative work.

Platinum Supporters $5,000+
Please take this opportunity to
support the arts in Atlanta in a
unique way—by supporting ACP!
A donation in ANY amount will
help us pay for stamps, toner or
other supplies that enable us to
continue running our small office,
to produce this huge festival!
We could not accomplish what
we have without the generous
support of culturally minded
people like you.
Donations may be made online
at acpinfo.org or sent to the
ACP office:
Atlanta Celebrates Photography
