2015 Faculty Research Day Outcome Report

The 5th Annual University of Bridgeport Faculty Research Day proved to be the most successful
year yet with an amazing 129 posters accepted from 118 individuals and an estimated 200 nonpresenting attendees. Posters were submitted in five categories: Undergraduate student, Graduate
student, Doctoral Student, Faculty Competitive, and Faculty Non-Competitive. Twenty-nine
academic programs were represented in the final poster list, constituting eleven Schools and
Colleges. Since its revival as an annual event in 2011, Faculty Research Day has become the
premiere academic event on campus, providing a venue at which the diverse array of research
undertaken by faculty and assisted by students is showcased. The goal of the event is to foster
project collaborations between departments, schools, and colleges as research becomes
increasingly interdisciplinary.
With over 129 posters across five categories, submissions increased by a total of seven posters
compared to 2014. Forty-four of the submissions were Faculty posters, with 18 of those submitted
in the competitive category. The Trefz School of Business represented one third of the Faculty
Competitive Posters and yielded one of the four chosen winners. A total of 85 student posters were
entered into the competition: 23 doctoral, 39 graduate, and 23 undergraduate. The figures below
show the evolution of poster submissions over the last five years. The overall submission of faculty
posters has decreased by three posters from 2014 to 2015, the Division of Graduate Studies &
Research hopes that this trend will be reversed for the 2016 competition.
The diversity of the posters has continued to improve with each year’s competition. Increased
participation from the Trefz School of Business, College of Public and International Affairs, and
the collective Health Sciences division was apparent in this year. From the Health Sciences
division, five student posters were submitted: two doctoral posters from the College of
Chiropractic, two from the College of Naturopathic Medicine, and one graduate poster from the
Fones School of Dental Hygiene. The addition of the Doctoral category may have attributed to
the increase of student participation from Health Sciences.

The Doctoral student category was implemented this year to better attract students in the
professional programs as well as to separate the more experienced students in the Computer
Science and Engineering and Technology Management doctoral programs from their Masters
student counterparts. We saw five doctoral posters from traditionally low-submitting departments
in the Health Sciences and the School of Education, two of which were awarded Honorable
Mentions. This additional category has raised the bar for even higher quality of work by the
doctoral and professional-program students and it proved to be a very tight competition. Graduate
student participation remains steadfast and strong, with increased submissions in non-empirically
based research projects in the Social Sciences.
While the School of Education did submit a poster from their Educational Leadership Doctoral
program, overall participation from the school decreased from 6% of the total submissions in 2014
to only 2% in 2015. A poster from the IDEAL program of the School of Continuing Education
was included in 2015, this was the school’s first time participating in the event, marking the
participation by eleven of UB’s thirteen Schools and Colleges this year. The Physician’s Assistant
Program is the only department to not partake in the competition thus far.
Undergraduate students boosted their submission numbers by 53% compared to last year’s count.
The majority of these students were mentored within the School of Arts & Science (A&S) Biology
department, however submissions from Psychology, Counseling, Computer Science and
Engineering, Interior Design, and World Religion & Politics were also represented. Kathleen
Engelmann, Ph.D., Professor of Biology, amazingly advised thirteen of the twenty-three
undergraduate posters submitted, four of which went on to win awards and honorable mentions.
The vast assortment of the disciplines of our young investigators shows UB’s unwavering
commitment to progressing as research intensive institution.
The percentage of posters capitalized by the School of Engineering decreased from 49% in 2014
to 38% in 2015, however the total number of engineering posters submitted only decreased by
three, which may be attributed to students attending the National Society of Black Engineers
conference in Anaheim, California on the same day as Faculty Research Day. This percentage
decrease also shows the awakening of research projects undertaken by the other schools and
colleges on campus.
Figures 4 and 5 show the participation breakdown of the Schools and Colleges from 2014 and
2015. In these charts “Health Sciences” includes all posters from Dental Hygiene, Acupuncture,
Naturopathic Medicine, Chiropractic, and Nutrition.

The morning saw a bustling of activity in the Schelfhaudt Art Gallery, where the 118 poster
presenters and an estimated 200 spectators perused the variety of research disciplines ranging from
consumer marketing studies to a novel smart phone application to detect melanoma to an analysis
of women’s suffrage and empowerment efforts in Ethiopia, – and projects everywhere in between.
Five of the undergraduate student posters from the Biology department featured research on the
common plant Arabidopsis thaliana, yet each project was unique in its thesis and methods.
This year was the most highly attended FRD in recent UB history. 267 individuals registered,
including the 118 poster presenters. The Fones School of Dental Hygiene encouraged their
students to attend, and that they did - with over 60 students present at the morning poster session.
The buzz of activity continued on throughout the rest of the event, culminating at the wine and
cheese reception where the awards were announced.
President Salonen and Mrs. Salonen attended the morning poster session and spent time talking
with students and faculty about their respective projects. In the photo below, President Salonen
speaks to Pedro Ramos, a sophomore Biology student about his research on the connection
between thermo-receptors and human emotions.

Keynote
Mark A. Boyer, Ph.D. delivered the keynote speech to a packed Littlefield Auditorium. Dr. Boyer
is a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of Connecticut
where he is also the Director of the Environmental Studies Major and is Scholar-in-Residence for
the Center for Environmental Science and Engineering. In addition, Dr. Boyer co-directs the
GlobalEd Project, which employs the ICONS simulation as an experimental international studies
venue. He spoke at Faculty Research Day of the importance of stepping outside of our comfort
zones in order to gain collaborative opportunities, a message that resonates with our campus by
the sea, with many of our departments relying on interdisciplinary joint efforts in order to execute
research. He also reminded his audience that failure is a pervasive and natural part of the learning
process and it is critical to make use of failures. Dr. Boyer’s charismatic and amiable personality
sparked discussions of teamwork and collaboration throughout the rest of the afternoon.

Breakout sessions & lunch
During the lunch hour, three breakout sessions were
offered as well as a general seating area. Ruba Deeb,
Ph.D., gave an engaging talk about “Resources for
Research Funding and Collaborations.” Dr. Deeb has
recently come to UB from Cornell Weill Medical
School, where she was the Primary Investigator (PI)
on many prestigious grants and projects. Her
expertise in applying for and securing external
research funding is a valuable asset for the growing
culture of research on campus.

Steve Hess, Ph.D., from the College of Public and International Affairs and Amanda Petrus, Ph.D,
from the Chemistry Department in Arts & Sciences presented the best practices for “How to
Succeed in Publication and Dissemination.” Both presenters have established publishing records
and were able to speak of the challenges and successes of publishing in their respective disciplines.

The final breakout session was given by Constance Vickers, Assistant Director of the Office of
Sponsored Research & Programs and Maria Gherasimova, Ph.D., Physics Faculty member and
Faculty Research Council Arts & Sciences representative. Their presentation, “Seed Money
Grants’ gave an overview on the internal grant process for research projects in their infancy stages.
Seed Money Grants are awarded through the Faculty Research Council and are available to all
Full-Time Faculty to apply for.

The Poster Talk hour offered five different locations with a total of 19 faculty presenters from the
Trefz School of Business, the College of Public and International Affairs, Arts & Sciences Physics
and Chemistry Departments, Biomedical and Electrical Engineering, Acupuncture Institute,
College of Chiropractic, the School of Education, and the Shintaro Akatsu School of Design.
Twelve of the presentations were given on Faculty Competitive posters, although this is not
included in the final judging of the posters. Michael Lohle, Ph.D., from the Trefz School of
Business presented his poster on “Real Projects, Virtual Worlds: Coworkers, Their Avatars and
the Trust Conundrum.” Lohle later won a Faculty Poster Award for his project.
Award ceremony
At the close of the day, with an electric energy still clinging to the air, attendees gathered once
more in the Schelfhaudt Galley for the Awards Ceremony. Dr. Tarek Sobh, Senior Vice
President for the Division of Graduate Studies & Research and the Dean of Engineering thanked
attendees for their commitment to the development of research on campus and proudly
announced the awards in each category. First, Second, and Third Place as well as three
Honorable Mentions were given for each the Undergraduate, Graduate, and Doctoral categories.
Four unranked Faculty Awards were given for the Faculty Competitive Category. Student
posters were judged by volunteer UB Faculty and local industry members. Five highly regarded
scholars and field experts were invited to judge the eighteen faculty competitive posters. These
exceptional community members represented fellow universities in the region, as well as the
Bridgeport Hospital.

Four Faculty Posters were awarded from the Faculty Competitive Category. With each year the
quality of the research from our Faculty becomes more elite and innovative, creating a very steep
competition for those in this category. The winners are as follows: Left, Ashish Aphale, Ph.D.,
Adjunct Professor of Computer Science & Engineering and Post-Doctoral Researcher accepts his
Faculty Poster Award for his research on Graphene Based Nanocomposite Electrodes. Dr.
Aphale is also an alumnus of UB’s Computer Science and Engineering Doctoral Program;
Middle, Michael Lohle, Ph.D., Professor of Information Technology in the Ernest C. Trefz
School of Business receives his award for his qualitative study on the impact of avatar use on
project management success in virtual collaboration settings. Dr. Lohle also presented this topic
at the afternoon poster talk session. Right, Xingguo (Michael) Xiong, left, and his co-author SK
Hasan Hafizul Haque accept their award for their research on an automatic BioMEMs Smart
Drug Delivery System. Dr. Xiong is an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, Mr. Haque
is a Masters Candidate in the Electrical Engineering Program. Not present for the awards
ceremony was Stergios Bibis, Ph.D., Professor of Biology. This is Dr. Bibis’ first year as a
faculty member at UB, however he is a fellow Purple Knight: holding a Bachelor’s of Science
degree in Biology. His research focused on phospholipids in the human parasite Leishmania.

What to anticipate next year? Continued diversification and interdepartmental collaboration on
projects as well as further cultivation of partnerships with our local industry members. Nine
students and three administrators from the Fairchild Wheeler Science Magnet High School in
Bridgeport attended this year’s event, in 2016 students will be invited to submit their own posters
to present at the event. We also aim to have representation from all thirteen Schools and Colleges.
