They provide a time for family and friends to gather, a time to reflect on the good fortune of the year and of course time to eat some really good food. But for some folks, especially kids, it’s a time for gifts, both giving and receiving them. This time of year provides the perfect opportunity to teach children about giving and what it really means. A time to teach them it’s not about the cost of a gift, but the meaning behind it. Here are a few ideas to help kids understand the true meaning of giving. Children’s lives are relatively simple. They consist of family, school, toys, games and protesting bed time. Most kids don’t see the struggles that some people face on a daily basis. The holidays are a good time to show them that life can be difficult, but more importantly, how they can help. One way for your kids to help other children is to share their good fortune. This could mean cleaning out their clothes and toys. Show your children the things they no longer want or need may benefit others. Help them go through the clothing that no longer fits or the toys they no longer play with and donate them. Of course the clothes should be in good shape and the toys should be intact. Some programs like Toys for Tots ask for new and unwrapped toys, but there are plenty of organizations that would gladly take toys that have been pre-loved. Have your kids be creative and make cards and artwork. There are plenty of people in plenty of places who would love a special card or drawing. These works of art can be given to hospitals, nursing homes, veterans’ homes, shelters and many other places where they would bring a smile. Don’t forget about our brave men and women serving in our military. These folks are far from home defending our freedom and could use a warm greeting. Teach your kids that their time is a gift. Volunteer with them to gather food for the needy, make care packages for our troops or visit hospitals and nursing homes. They can help our four legged friends. Kids love animals and many Continued on page 9 Holiday Guide 2015 Recipe Contest Artichoke Dip 2 cans of artichokes, finely chopped 2 cups mayonnaise 1 egg Lots of garlic, finely chopped 2 cups grated Parmesan cheese 1 cup grated or shredded mozzarella cheese Mix together. Keeping it local this holiday season – always ‘Tis the season for holiday shopping and for some people it can get tedious. Some folks put their heart and soul into holiday shopping, getting gifts for everyone from their family to their mail carrier. But what if you could do your shopping and help your community all at the same time? One way to do this is to shop local. Shopping local is a concept that has been around for years, but tying it to the holidays really got a push with Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday is the Saturday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday. It began in 2010 as a marketing campaign by Holiday Guide 2015 Recipe Contest Raspberry Mousse 1 tsp. gelatin 4 Tbls. raspberry juice 1/2 pint whipping cream 4 Tbls. sugar 1 cup raspberries drained and crushed Soak the gelatin in cold raspberry juice and melt over hot water. The more successful a local business, the more people they will need to hire and the more people who are employed, the healthier a community becomes. Consider how local businesses can make your community more unique. Big box chain stores are everywhere and their products are all the same. But let’s say your community has a bakery for dogs. Now that’s unique and people will come from far away to check it out. The more people that shop your community, the stronger its economy becomes and this can benefit everyone. From a tax standpoint small businesses make better use of your tax dollars. These businesses require much less infrastructure investment than national chains. Small local businesses are more efficient with the use of public services. Both of these factors allow your tax dollars to go farther. Shopping local this holiday season is a great idea for many reasons. So before you start checking things off of your list, check out your locals business. It’s a win for them, for you and for your community. Pick up your certified Santa invitation for our Dec. 5-6 – Elf Takes New York Yes! We personalize all of our Ornaments FREE! While Black Friday benefits the big box retailers and Cyber Monday benefits online shopping, Small Business Saturday carves out a day for the Mom and Pop stores. So how does shopping local benefit you the consumer? First, you have much more control and probably get much better customer service. Let’s say you’re buying a tool for Dad. Do you think you will get better service at an enormous big box home improvement store or from the local hardware store that has been in business for 30 years? Have you ever tried to find help at one of these warehouse type stores? Good luck finding someone over 18 to answer your question. It is more likely that local business owners will stand by their products, as they have their reputation to protect. Shopping local keeps your community strong. Spending money locally keeps that money in the community which helps the community grow. A growing community will then have a better opportunity to support other local organizations like youth sports, non-profits and charitable organizations. Mary Lou Mantia Newark 16 8 2015 WCSJ/WJDK Holiday Guide Nelson Publishing, Inc. Gifts for those who teach, pool funds The holidays can be both wonderful and hectic. You want to include everyone on your gift giving list and you want to make their gift special. One special person who shouldn’t be overlooked is that person who is so important to your children. They spent months with them, being patient, watching them grow both intellectually and physically and your child’s life would not be the same without them…they are our teachers. For many children the relationship that they form with a teacher is something they will remember for a lifetime. That teacher may have inspired them, shown them that anything is possible or just been the person they needed at that time in their life. Here are a few gift ideas for these very important people. It’s safe to say that teachers love kids and what better gift from a child, no matter how old, than something True meaning . ...................... Continued from page 4 animal shelters have volunteer opportunities. Helping others is clearly something we should do all year round, but the holidays are a great time to introduce kids to the concept. While the folks in need benefit from our help, your kids will as well. Volunteering and seeing the positive impact it has will do great things for their self esteem. They will learn that they can make a difference and that their actions are important. Giving should come from the heart and giving of yourself is its truest form. Win a homemade? It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate; it just has to come from the heart. For younger kids, get out the crayons and construction paper. For older kids, maybe it’s a letter or a picture with something inscribed. How about some tasty treats? Does your teacher have a sweet tooth or how about something salty? Foods for gifts are universally appreciated, except maybe fruitcake. Instead of fighting with administration over classroom supplies, how about giving them as a gift? Some teachers probably don’t have the supplies they want or need. Find out what supplies would make their job easier or more rewarding and give them as a holiday gift. Volunteering to help them with whatever they need might be a welcome surprise. Time is valuable and your time might make all the difference in the world. Consider going big. Contact other parents and pool your money. The gift could be specifically for the teacher or again, something to make their job easier. Most teachers love what they do and something that can benefit their whole class usually makes them happy and proud. Maybe it’s supplies or maybe it’s something bigger like a computer. If you pool your money, you might be able to give them something really special. Our teachers are a great and sometimes underappreciated part of our children’s lives. Take the time, find out what would make them smile and include them on your gift giving list. $250 Holiday Shopping Spree Daily Prizes and and Daily Prizes Giveaways start December 1, 2015 Grand Prize Drawing will be December 16, 2015 at 6:40am on WCSJ REGISTER TO WIN – PLEASE PRINT Listen to WCSJ FM 103.1 and WJDK FM 95.7 for details on how you could win the $250 Holiday Shopping Spree, and where to register. Nelson Publishing, Inc. 2015 WCSJ/WJDK Holiday Guide 17 9 Alright guys, the holidays are near and the pressure is on. She is expecting the gift to end all gifts. She is expecting the gift that will show her how much you really care. This is no time to phone it in boys! So where do you start? My advice, events be engraved on a piece of jewelry or be represented in another way? Keep in mind that the cost of your gift doesn’t really matter if it comes from the heart. If an expensive piece of jewelry doesn’t fit your budget, that’s okay. Again, go for the heartfelt gift. Let’s go written and framed? How much do you know about her childhood? Is that something she would like? Find something she loved as a child, a doll, a knickknack, whatever. This means talking to her family and doing some digging, but if you can hone in on something, it could be gift gold. Speaking of getting some help. Most guys would never consider buying her clothes. Most wouldn’t know what to start, but her mom, sister or best friend would. Mostly likely they know her style and her size. These ladies can be great allies, use their knowledge. Imagine giving her a sweater, dress or blouse that she really likes…and it fits. You would be looking pretty good. A word of warning…Do Not Get Her A Gift Card. This screams: I didn’t put any thought into this. If you want to make your wife or girlfriend happy this holiday season, give her gift some thought. Take some time and use your head. She is not like your buddies with whom you show affection with mocking and name calling, she deserves something nice, something from the heart. Good luck! Gift giving for your gal start from the heart. This means looking back on your relationship and remembering the important moments, your first date, your first kiss, the first “I love you.” Even if you have forgotten these moments, chances are, she hasn’t. Now take those experiences and work from there. Is there some way to tie your first date into a gift? The same thing goes for your first kiss or the first I love you. When guys think gifts for their wife or girlfriend they unusually think jewelry. This is fine, if they like jewelry, but simply buying a necklace or bracelet, might not impress her. Go back to those important moments, can one of those Some say they are hard to buy for, some say they will like anything. Either way, if you’ve got a guy on your gift giving list, it may take some thought. First consider your relationship to the guy. Is he your husband, brother, father or just a friend? This may impact what you spend or how much time you want to put into looking. Next, set a price point, based on your relationship. What do guys like? Stereotypically, guys like sports, cars and the outdoors. These categories don’t include all men, but let’s start here. If your guy loves sports, he probably has a favorite sport and a favorite team. Determine if it’s football, baseball, basketball, or none of the above. Does he prefer college or professional sports? What is his favorite team? Odds are this is someone close to you, so answering these questions shouldn’t be too tough. Once your homework is done, your options are many. Apparel is always a good place to start. You can choose from shirts, jerseys, jackets and what guy doesn’t love a cap? Beyond cloth- back to those important moments. Are there photos related to them? Is so, print one, write something special on it and frame it. Create something with those memories, use photos, songs you share, mementos from places you have been together. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to come from your heart and don’t play that real men don’t show emotion nonsense. If you want to give her something special, dig deep and man up cowboy. Can you write? How about a poem ing, think décor. Does he have a man cave? If so, it could probably use some décor of his favorite team. This means, pictures, posters, rugs, pillows, garbage cans, wall hangings and bobble heads, just to name a few things. This is just the tip of the iceberg for sports related shopping, but you get the idea. equipment he normally uses. You can talk to the folks at the sporting goods store, they may have suggestions and will certainly know what merchandise is for the serious outdoorsman. Next, the gear head or car lover. This one is even more specialized than the outdoorsman. Do not attempt to buy specific car parts or accessories without knowing what he really wants or needs. That is not to say that other car related gifts aren’t available. Think man cave Gift giving for your guy 10 What about the outdoorsman in your life? Again, you will need to answer some questions. Is he a hunter, hiker, fisherman? If he hunts, what does he hunt? What kind of fishing does he enjoy? Once you have the answers, you can get started. These outdoor sports can be very specific, so get the advice from someone who knows what he likes or needs. You don’t want to get him something that is not the quality of the 2015 WCSJ/WJDK Holiday Guide again. There are posters, model cars, wall hangings, clocks, rugs, etc.. How about a subscription to a car magazine? You don’t have to be a mechanic to buy for the car lover. Gift giving to the guy(s) in your life doesn’t have to be hard. Find out what they like and get specific once you do. All in all, guys are pretty simple. And if they don’t like the gift you give, then just fill them full of holiday food. Nelson Publishing, Inc. Holiday giving – cookie exchange party The holidays mean a lot of things, one of which is giving and receiving gifts. For some folks this is the best part of the season, for others it’s a chore. One way to keep it simple, include a lot of people and satisfy your sweet tooth all at the same time is to have a cookie exchange. It’s a great way to spend time with friends and exchange your special creations. Next set a date and time and send out your invitations. Let your guest know that you expect homemade cookies and how many cookies to bring. The amount of cookies each guest should supply is based on how many people you invite. You want your guests to send you their recipes ahead of time. This is done for two reasons. First you want to be able to supply these recipes to each guest. Second, you want to make sure that not everyone is bringing sugar cookies. The problems may arise if someone considers their recipe secret. If this is the case, ask them to choose another recipe, one they don’t mind sharing. Another problem may arise if several guests are planning on bringing the same type of cookie and they don’t want to compromise. Hopefully at least a few to them will compromise. Invitations can be sent out by mail or e-mail, whichever is easier for you. Once you have gathered the recipes, sharing them can be done many different ways. One way is to put them all on ! Bonus Prize ! All Trivia Contest Winners’ names are put in a drawing for a 50” VIZIO TV courtesy of Greenway Automotive Greenway Trivia Contest Canada paper and hand them out the each guest. A more festive way is to print them out individually and place them by each cookie display. Speaking of displays, decorations for the event should include several tables with a platter for each guest’s goodies. Once the cookies are on their platters, each guest can walk around collecting the types of cookies they want. You should supply each guest with festive bag or box to carry their treats home. Most everyone likes sweets. Consider throwing a cookie exchange. Buy a Table andand Buy a Table and 5 Chairs 5 Chairs and TH YOUR 6 CHAIR IS FREE! Buy a Table and 5 Chairs and Your Chair IS is FREE!
