Serving on the Youth Council of First Presbyterian Church is a unique way for youth and adults to serve the church of Jesus Christ, to gain new and valuable skills, learn more about the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and create a youth ministry that honors Jesus Christ. Members of this Youth Council will possess the following characteristics: • • • • • • • • • • Humility: Humility they understand that they are part of a group and child in the family of God. Organization: Organization they will manage their own schedule in such a way so that they effectively represent the group and will be attentive to the details. Hard Working: Working they will tend to tasks that need to be done, and will take on unglamorous and incomplete tasks. Honesty: Honesty they will be true to their word and will do good things when no one is looking. Attentiveness: Attentiveness they will be involved in what the group is doing. Good Listener: Listener they will actively listen to others and respects other’s opinions. Dedicated: Dedicated they will seriously go about the work of council, yet not be overbearing and willing to have fun as well. Earthly/Realistic: Earthly/Realistic they do not fear ideas that would seem out of range, yet are thoughtful to the group’s capabilities and limitations. Prayerful: Prayerful they engage in daily prayer for the youth and people of our church and the world. Voiced: Voiced they will speak their opinion without fear and speak the opinions of others in the group. Some Youth Council Responsibilities • • • • • Provide, during the school year, weekly programming balanced between mission, fellowship, discussion, and worship opportunities. Worship opportunities include planning, leadership, and participation in Youth Sunday and Living Nativity in coordination with the Worship & Music Committee. Create and enable programs that encourage new persons to be a part of this faith community. Help to plan/supervise fund-raising events (such as Mission Trip Fundraiser Silent Auction & Lunch) to help finance mission opportunities. Support and encourage participation in special youth retreats, events and conferences such as: • Indian Nations Youth Quake • Fall Retreat & Confirmation Retreat • Intergenerational Mission Trip 4 2015 - 2016 Youth Council Application Process WHO CAN APPLY FOR YOUTH COUNCIL? Any youth who is currently in the 5th-11th grade (rising 6th to 12th graders) and who regularly participates in the life of the First Presbyterian Church of Stillwater. WHAT ARE THE TERMS OF SERVICE? All youth elected will serve from August 2015 through August 2016 as a voting member. Youth can serve two consecutive years as a voting member. After two consecutive years, youth can serve on Youth Council as an ex-officio member, meaning they have voice, but no vote. CAN ANYONE ATTEND A YOUTH COUNCIL MEETING? Any youth who participates in the life of First Presbyterian Church can attend a Youth Council meeting. WHO MAKES THE SELECTION OF COUNCIL? The Youth Ministry committee will make the selection of up to seven youth. During the selection process, each applicant is a assigned a number so that the Youth committee does not know the name of the persons being selected. One youth from each grade will be selected to serve on Youth Council. HOW TO APPLY: APPLY Fill out the application (on the opposite page) and return to Katie. If you need another copy, you can find it on the church website (http://www.stillwaterfpc.org/page/home/ http://www.stillwaterfpc.org/page/home/ fellowship/youthfellowship/youth-group) group or you can get one from Katie. The deadline to turn in applications is June 30th. The front page of the application can be filled out by hand. The short answer page of the application must be typed. If you need to borrow a computer to type your answers, you are welcome to use one in the computer lab. HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED IF I AM ON YOUTH COUNCIL? All applicants, whether selected or not, will be notified by e-mail. 5 Youth Council Expectations Servant leadership: Being part of the Youth Council is an honor and a privilege. Each member of Youth Council is to be an example of ‘servant leadership’, which means that we lead by not only words, but with our actions as well. Being present: They are expected to be present for as many PYG events as possible, being willing to serve as a leader for events. Completing tasks/asking for help: Because we all depend on each other, Youth Council members need to be attentive to the tasks for which they have been assigned. If anyone feels overwhelmed by their particular assignment, they should call for immediate backup. Communication: Because good communication is vitally important, Youth Council members need to check their e-mail accounts, youth & church website and texts very frequently and respond quickly, if needed. The sponsors and Director of Children and Youth Ministry (Katie) promise to be equally as responsive to you! Absences: Youth Council members must inform the Director of Children and Youth Ministry as soon as possible when they will not be present for a meeting or function, not waiting for a reminder regarding the meeting to inform of absence. The sooner we know of Youth Council member’s ability to be present the better. The council has set the following guidelines regarding absences: • 1st unexcused absence will result in written warning and meet with Director of Children and Youth Ministry (Katie). Member will also be asked if they are fully committed or would they like the option to resign. Sometimes the commitment is more than the member thought. • 2nd unexcused absence will result in automatic resignation. This may seem harsh but we want to make sure the member understands the honor, privilege, and duty of the youth council. Time commitment: Youth Council meets once a month on a regular basis, ideally under 2 hours per meeting. Occasionally, as an immediate need arises, an emergency meeting might be called to deal with a single issue. 6 Do you enjoy things like getting snow cones, swimming at the pool, going to a matinee, meeting at Aspen Coffee, or getting lunch?
