In support of his US debut LP, The Socialite, Clockwise toured the east and west coasts of the States, selling out countless famous music haunts. Andy’s brand new album War Stories was recorded in Australia over the summer. The born-and-bred Melbournian has been telling, listening and reading stories his entire life. His new album, Little Stories, is an 11 song collection that speaks of buried bones, murderous stove cooks, sentimental corporate bankers and mystical cricket players. After immersing himself in various school jazz troupes and sneaking into Melbourne’s live venues, he started performing in a café attached to a furniture store for $70-andfree-focaccias. In 2001, Harry joined forces with five other jazz mates to create the multi-platinum international touring sensation - The Cat Empire. Little Stories is just the latest example of his talents. Saskia Sansom is an Australian pianist and singer currently based in New York. Her sound has been described as romantic, ethereal and narcotic. She’s collaborated with Tim Burton, Jim White (Cat Power), JP Shilo, and Nick Seymour (Crowded House). She’s also performed at prestigious festivals such as Mona Foma alongside Philip Glass and Grinderman. She is currently getting ready to record her debut studio album which she will be working on closely with Grammy award winning cellist Larry Gold in Philadelphia. Big Scary www.bigscary.net Big Scary are a boy/girl two-piece from Melbourne, Australia. Joanna chills at the kit, occasionally chiming in with some backing vocals, whilst lead singer Tom swaps between electric guitar and keys, in turn moulding the on-stage genres from grunge to pop to moody ballads. Releasing a compilation of four seasonally-themed EPs titled The Big Scary Four Seasons in late 2010, Big Scary have recently released their debut album Vacation in Aus/NZ. It was nominated for Triple J Australian Album of the Year and was voted the eighth Best Album of 2011 by Triple J music director Richard Kingsmill. Busby Marou www.busbymarou.com Rockhampton’s favourite sons BUSBY MAROU recently released their debut self-titled album whose emotive first single Biding My Time is steadily finding its way into the Australian consciousness. Tom Busby’s cheeky stage presence and Jeremy Marou’s freakish musical ability deliver a distinctly Australian way of sharing stories. BUSBY MAROU’S self-titled debut album reached #24 on the ARIA album charts and #5 on the Australian artist charts. The boys are also making their presence felt with strong showings in the nominations at the AIR, Deadly and Queensland Music Awards. Make sure you come and say G’Day. He’s performed at Peats Ridge Festival, Sydney Blues and Roots Festival, Sydney Australia Day Festival, National Australian Blues Festival, Bodhi Festival and One Movement MusExpo. Hilltop Hoods www.hilltophoods.com When the crew’s first EP, Back Once Again dropped in 1997, the broad Australian accents, nimble flows and stunning beats declared the arrival of a significant new force in Australian Hip-Hop. The crew are singled out among Australia’s hottest live acts by press, industry insiders and fans alike. A sold-out national tour, standout festival spots and performances at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire and Berlin’s Popkomm have proven they can take their sound to the far corners of the globe. With forthcoming spots at prestigious international festivals including Glastonbury and Canadian Music Week, the horizons are ever expanding for this powerful trio. Husky www.huskysongs.com Husky the band includes folk-inspired Husky Gawenda on vocals and guitar, Gideon Preiss on vocals and keys, Evan Tweedie on vocals and bass and Luke Collins on drums and percussion. Minute 36 www.minute36.com Minute 36 came about after songwriter and composer Kris Nelson, suffered from insomnia and spent too much time lying awake listening to horror film scores and searching heritage buildings for ghosts. Australian born and raised, Minute 36 have a strong foundation in their home country. They have recorded and released an EP and full length album. They’ve toured extensively, received song writing awards, featured on festivals, received healthy radio play and supported Amanda Palmer and Karnivool. They’ve just begun building their presence internationally with European radio airplay, digital distribution and showcasing opportunities at CMW. 2012 is set to be a big year for Minute 36. Oh Mercy www.ohmercy.com.au Oh Mercy, headed by songwriter Alexander Gow, is a young indie rock band with real talent. Their new album, Great Barrier Grief, recorded by Mitchel Froom (Crowded House, Elvis Costello) debuted at number 13 on the Australian ARIA album chart and was recently nominated for two ARIA Awards. Timeless in feel, Oh Mercy’s new album, Great Barrier Grief is a confident, purposeful album with the occasional bird noise thrown in. The album has been featured on Triple J radio Australia, 3fm in The Netherlands and added to over 100 US College radio stations. POND www.facebook.com/pondling In 2008, good friends Joseph Ryan (Mink Mussel Creek), Nick Allbrook (Tame Impala, Mink Mussel Creek) and Jay Watson (Tame Impala) sat under a mulberry tree in Daglish, Perth and wrote the tropical lo-fi psychedelic pastiche Psychedelic Mango. This resulted in the album Corridors of Blissterday, recorded live with an eight piece band in five days sometime in 2009. Afterwards they released the pop funk single Frond through Hole In The Sky Records. In January 2011, a little 7” single Greenspool was released by West Australian label Badminton Bandit. Their new album Beard Wives Denim will be released worldwide by Modular Records at the beginning of March 2012. The Cat Empire www.thecatempire.com THE CAT EMPIRE are the youngest Aussie band to turn 10 years old and they’re celebrating with a Global tour. Word quickly spread about this young band that could deliver a party like no other. By the time they signed their first record deal with EMI, they were packing out 1500 seat venues in each Australian major city and had a solid fan base all over the country. It wasn’t long until the rest of the world caught on and the band has now sold over a million albums and dvds in all corners of the globe. The Jefferson www.thejeffersonband.com With a big, melodic sound, Sydney’s The Jefferson are often compared to bands who exhibit huge stadium-filling sounds such as U2, Snow Patrol and Kings of Leon. In 2010, The Jefferson independently released an album titled Safe Return to Earth in Australia, after which they released an EP, Days are Falling in North America. The song, Running was featured on the season finale of Degrassi: The Next Generation and Youtube views for the video of have increased sevenfold since airing. The bands 2009 breakout release “Conditions” has now scanned over 800,000 albums worldwide and anticipation for the bands latest offering is sky high. Tinpan Orange www.myspace.com/tinpanorange Six-foot front-woman Emily Lubitz twirls her flaming red hair across a complex and original musical creation, in which virtuoso instrumental performances and pulsating rhythms merge to form a wholly unique sound. Guitarist Jesse Lubitz thumps up dust from the floor of the stage, the drums rumble, the organ whirrs and up over the top of everything floats the prodigal Alex Burkoy’s achingly sad violin. Since their early days as Australian folk darlings, brotherand-sister duo Tinpan Orange have evolved into a dizzyingly original musical force. Still evident is the lush song craft and lyrical depth for which they are renowned. Traveller & Fortune www.myspace.com/travellerandfortune Multi-instrumentalists create songs that are both moody and uplifting, rich with harmony and melody. Traveller & Fortune’s performances are honest and nuanced. After a spate of haphazard gigs with ad-hoc harmonies, not so witty banter and more than a little toe-tapping the band was born in 2009. Striking while the iron was hot, the newly-formed group spent the earnings of the previous months’ work on getting their ideas down. Their 2010 self titled EP was recorded in live sessions over a few days in Adelaide and earned recognition on Triple J Radio’s Home and Hosed program. Voltaire Twins www.voltairetwins.com Voltaire Twins are a Perth-based indie dance quartet. Their story began in 2008 when siblings Jaymes and Tegan, won the Triple J Unearthed Parklife competition, leading them to support Ladytron, Maximo Park, Midnight Juggernauts and Art vs Science. Their music video took out Gold at the Australian Cinematography Awards and was voted the 7th most popular on ABCTV’s Rage. The Moullinex remix of Romulus reached Hype Machine’s top ten most downloaded, blogged and listened to tracks in December 2011.
