a. Building Analyst – this is the first step if you are just starting out with the BPI training.
b. Building Envelope – this is the second step that you do not do until you have taken and
passed the BPI – Building Analyst course.
c. How BPI works
i. BPI itself does not do any “training”. It is only the testing body. There are
hundreds of affiliates out there who have been approved by BPI to provide training.
ii. If you take course work with one of the approved providers, then you qualify to sit
for the BPI exam.
iii. The BPI-based training courses we offer qualify you to sit for the BPI exams.
iv. BPI Exams
1. There are 2 types of exams for the BPI program
a. First is a written test. This test is done on a computer, but requires a
proctor to be present in the room.
b. Second is a live audit. The primary focus of the audit is combustion
analysis, but you are required to go over the basic elements of the
audit including use of a blower door.
2. The BPI training we provide (except for the Online training only class)
includes all testing and exam fees.
3. You will learn all the training materials online via video, then you will
schedule the date and time for your live exam and field test. You will then
show up at one of the 9 different training locations across the United States.
2) Training for RESNET
a. All BPI students our qualified to sit for the RESNET HESP (Home Energy
Survey Professional) exam. (exam fees for the HESP are separate).
b. HERS – Home Energy Rating System is a far more complex course that the
HESP and requires a 5 day classroom training. Please contact us if you are

Although not required for doing an audit, if you want to take our professional

The Blower Door. This tool is
most often used to create a depressurized environment, the
manometer (computer consol)
then calculates how much air
movement there is in the
structure, telling you whether the
building is “leaky” or “tight”.
Duct “blaster”. This is used to
pressurize the central air handing
duct work to test for leaks.
Like the Blower door, it does not
“find” or “repair” leaks, just
shows you that you have them.
Carbon Monoxide Detector.
This tool used to make sure
there is not an unsafe level of
carbon monoxide in a structure.
Since CO is odorless and
colorless, you will use this to
make sure the structure is safe.
Gas Leak Detector. This tool used
to “sniff” for leaks in a natural gas
line. It is used for safety detection –
to prevent explosions, fires or other
dangers. It is also used to check for
leaks that are costing the building
owner money.
Combustion Analyzer.
Used to test the
combustion gases (water
heater, furnace, etc.) to
make sure the unit is
operating safely and
efficiently.
IR Thermometer. This is a noncontact thermometer. That
means you point and pull the
trigger and it tells you the
temperature of the object – has a
red laser pointer so you know
what you are pointing at.
