Message by the Dean
The Faculty of Eastern Medicine which has its roots in Hamdard
Tibbi College (since 1958) is the vision of Shaheed Hakim
Mohammed Said. It is therefore the oldest institution of Hamdard
University and now enjoy the constituent status as a degree
awarding institution.
Reaching this stage entailed a long struggle which culminated in
the year 2002, when the Federal Government amended the
Unani, Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic Practitioners’ Act 1965 to
recognize the Bachelor’s Degree in Eastern Medicine (BEMS) for
registration by the National Council for Tibb. It is indeed a
landmark in the history of Tibb in Pakistan when the Higher
Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad approved the revised
curriculum of Eastern Medicine for BEMS, M.Phil. and Ph.D.
degrees in July 2004. The degree course is also approved in
United Arab Emirates for the purpose of practise.
Prof. Dr. Hakim Abdul Hannan
Eastern Medicine physicians have the opportunity to serve,
clean, purify and balance the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual planes of patients. The Eastern System of Medicine
deals with the body as a whole and balance the disturbance in humors thus bringing health with its rational approaches. In
this context the modern world is looking towards the Asian countries which possess effective knowledge of Traditional
Systems of treatment. Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said visualized this degree program as well as research based
integrated curriculum to fill the gap and produce Tabibs who are also fully aware of modern diagnostic methods for treating
diseases effectively.
Thus the main objective of the programme is to prepare graduates trained in Eastern Medicine and having first hand
knowledge of the basic subjects of modern medicine. The global resurgence and acknowledgement of the natural medicine
have greatly enhanced the significance of this programme.
Faculty of Eastern Medicine is one of the leading institutions of Hamdard University where successful postgraduate program
is underway. So far 5 Ph.D’s and 9 M.Phil. degrees have been awarded. About 40 Research students are working on
different topics for their higher degrees. International collaboration with Japanese Institution (Toyama University), South
African (Ibn Sina Institute of Tibb, Johannesburg), Indian (CCRUM, Ibn Sina Academy, Aligarh) and other institution is proving
promising in advancement of Tibb.
Technical Collaboration in terms of Research Projects is underway with WHO (Immunization Program / Consultation) IUCN,
Shifa-ul-Mulk Memorial Academy (Infrastructure development grants), Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Livestock (MINFAL)
as well as with the Ministry of Environment (Biodiversity).
Deserving and meritorious students are given scholarships and free ships mostly funded by Hamdard Foundation Pakistan
(HFP).
The Faculty of Eastern Medicine re-affirm the commitment and the dedication to serve people for their health care with
utmost zeal and pray to Allah to bless our endeavors (Amen).

need complementary and Alternative Medicine as an
integral part of therapeutic discipline. B.E.M.S graduates
can provide consultation at various hospitals in the field of
disease prevention to improve the standards of health
care. B.E.M.S graduates can also be of value to herbal
medicine industry, where they can apply results of their
research and evaluating techniques to supplement
scientific and patient-related efficacy in herbal medicine.
Graduates can be a part of relevant teaching and

Career Opportunities
Herbal Medicine continues to be practised in many of the
Islamic countries today. The countries where it has to
some extent, enjoyed an official status are: India,
Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa. In
Pakistan, in the mid sixties, the government under the then
President ordered the official registration of Hakims. Tibb
enjoys wider public acceptability in the countries of
Middle East, Far East, Europe and North America. In the
latter areas, resurgence is being observed in the vogue of
herbal medicine.
B.E.M.S graduates can start their own practise by
establishing their own clinics and providing healthcare
services to the people. They can offer effective clinic and
