WYLDEFYRE October 2010 No 5 `This month I have basically kept the same formats as previously with the diary of events for the next two months and extensive results digest. I have also included what I hope will be instructive articles about a couple of events, as well as a few short reports about competitions at which I have been present (although sadly not competing). There is also a short article about the Bob Graham Round and hopefully this will put Stuart Williams’ magnificent achievement of successfully completing the Round inside 24 hours, into perspective. September was a successful month for BWFAC athletes, with some excellent performances at the Auxiliary Final of the Young Athletes League – note the number of PBs! There was success for the club at the North West Relays with five Lancashire team medals. Also there was success for individual members, with five being chosen to represent the Manchester area in the UK School Games at Gateshead and four ladies picked to compete for Lancashire Schools in the English Schools’ Intermediate and Senior Girls Heptathlon at Stoke. And let’s not forget our magnificent dozen at the Great North Run. If anyone has an informative or interesting article that you think would fit this publication, (if it is a very long piece it may be more relevant to the ‘News and Views’ section of this website) I would be pleased to include it in a future issue. Up to now I have written everything and it would be nice to have fresh views about local and national athletics. Anything running related from athletes, coaches or supporters, even if only loosely connected to athletics, would be gratefully accepted. As well as longer pieces, I think this publication would be suitable vehicle for any snippet or brief comment. For instance a coach might like give some advice or someone might like to share an athletic experience and if anyone has an amusing anecdote, I’m sure everyone would enjoy a smile. As with the Message Board, no illegal, threatening, obscene, racist or libellous material will be accepted. Also I would welcome any comments or suggestions for improvements to the content or layout of ‘Wyldefyre’. It was a warm still evening, perfect for running for the final Inter Club race of the season. Red Rose gave all the runners a friendly welcome and provided an interesting, scenic and well marshalled course, in and around Worden Park. Inter clubs have been run for many years starting in the Park and on the roads which encircle the park, but last year the route was changed, I think on police advice, for safety reasons to avoid as much as possible running on roads and utilized more of the trail paths through the park. It is a few years since I have competed in this race and this was the first time I ran this new course and I must compliment Red Rose on their route construction. It was very enjoyable and cathartic running along the woodland trails. After the race members of Red Rose provided an excellent buffet for the runners and supporters at the Fox & Lion Pub. First home from Preston Harriers was Gary Pennington in 20:59. A total of 164 runners competed, of which nine were guests. It was an opportunity for many of our youngest athletes to compete and some of our older members to try and improve their PBs and possibly try a discipline outside their normal comfort zone. Among the most interesting were the triple series of victories by little Jasmine Jolly (results below); the 300m race involving Alicia Johnston and Sophie Riley and an impressive 400m by Andy Stubbs, coming 4th in 59.0, which ranks him first in the disability T45 rankings. North West Relays: September 18th It was a day of success for the ten BWFAC teams that made the journey to Leigh, with the squad bringing back three gold and two silver team medals. These relays were held at Leigh Sports Village, a splendid facility just a mile from the centre of Leigh. Opened at the end of 2008, it features an 11,000 capacity stadium used by Leigh Centurions Rugby Club and Blackburn Rovers Reserves; a Sports Hall with a Health & Fitness centre and 25 metre swimming pool and a 400 metre 8 lane running track. The route of relay started on the running track and after a circuit, went onto the paths and tree lined trails in and around the ‘Village’. It was a good route, although there were a few sharp turns, which wasn’t to every runners liking and possibly there should have been more marshals, as several runners from some clubs went astray. Typical of September it was a showery day, but on the whole conditions were good for racing. The first race was the U13G race over a one lap 2K course in which team of Fiona Hockey, Lauren Quarmby and a smiling Molly Scarr won the Lancashire Silver Medal. Kieran Chell was the lone U13B representative and ran the first leg in 8:15. The U15G race was over a one lap 3K course and the ‘A’ team of Imogen Pierce, Alisha Johnson and Molly Betmead was 4th overall and won the Lancashire Gold Medal. The ‘B’ team was Alex Quarmby, Ashleigh Reid and Lucy Minns. There were no U15B or U17W BWFAC competitors. The U17M and Senior Lady’s races were run together over 4K, each leg being over two laps of the 2K course. In the U17M race, Daniel Quarmby competed and ran the first leg. Unfortunately Dan was the only member of the team and wisely did not take up my whimsical suggestion that he should run all three legs. In the Senior Lady’s competition both ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams were medallists, with the team of Stasia Bligh, Gemma Unsworth and Carolyn Robbins finishing fourth North West team and first Lancashire team. The ‘B’ team of Laura Deegan-Mountjoy, Andrea Smith and Nicola Rowley were Silver Medallists in Lancashire. The ‘C’ team was Bev Wright, Karen Dunford and Liz Routledge. LSARR had two teams, with one finishing third Lancashire team and Wesham had one team. (Full results of female and U17M at the time of writing were not yet available.) The final race of the day was the Senior Men’s race and this was over a two lap course of 4600 metres. The ‘A’ Team was led out by Stuart Robinson. Stuart is in heavy training for the Dublin Marathon at the end of October, running over 100 miles a week. However despite or possibly in spite of it, he appears not to have lost any of his road speed, as he led the race at the end of the first leg, not only just the Lancashire teams, but also the rest of the North West teams, with 14:35. Over all the legs Stuart was 5th fastest in the North West and fastest in Lancashire AA area. The best leg was by David Norman of Altrincham with 14:25. Jack Scarr followed Stuart with 15:24, on the third leg Luke Minns ran 15:06 and Luke Berry anchored the team home with 16:35 to a team time of 1:01:40. Although the team fell back to seventh North West team, they maintained the lead in the Lancashire competition. The second team was Rossendale Harriers & AC in 1:02:54 and third was Blackburn Harriers & AC in 1:04:09. Our ‘B’ team of Marcus Quarmby (16:57), Chris Lloyd (16:59), Stuart Johnson (19:49) and Terry Bradshaw (19:48) finished in 7th place with a team time of 1:13:33. Before his run Chris wondered if he might have lost some his speed as he had been helping Stuart Williams with his preparation for the Bob Graham Round (see page 4) and also with the actual run. With this extensive spell mountain running, his legs are like tree trunks, but judging by his run he needn’t have worried. The ‘C’ team of Jeff Wright (19:46), Derek Crane (19:56), Bob Massey (22:02) and John Winters (22:55) were 12th with 1:24:39. Team ‘D’ of Nick Hume (21:05), Dave Dyson (20:15), Peter Gibson (21:39) and Norman Greenwood (23:43) were 14th in 1:26:42. Lytham St Annes RR had two teams which finished 4th in 1:08:35 and 8th in 1:15:29. Wesham fielded three teams, which finished 5th with 1:09:03, 6th with 1:12:45 and 13th with 1:26:19. The first and third teams in the North West, Salford Harriers (59:44) and Altrincham (1:00:33), were from Greater Manchester AA area. The second team was Liverpool Harriers (1:00:01) from Merseyside AA area and the fourth team was Warrington (1:00:48) from Cheshire County area. Initially there was a stiff northerly breeze, however later on it seemed to moderate and turn more westerly. As at the previous open meeting two weeks ago, Jasmine Jolly was again a star turn winning three gold medals. There many good performance by a host of BWFAC athletes both senior and especially junior, however to include all the results in this Newsletter would be impractical and I have restricted results of BWFAC to those who came in the first three and apologies to those members who had PBs. Full results are available on this website. There was one unusual occurrence on the U9B’s Long Jump. The first two boys’ longest jumps were both 2.97m for Luke Suarez (unattached) and Jack Curtis of Barrow & Furness Striders. The rules specify that the next longest jump should count, but here both had the same length jump. So it was then down to the third jump and here Jack’s 3rd effort was a nojump and as Luke’s was a valid jump, Luke was judged the winner. To complement his story, here is a description of the route and brief history of this magnificent challenge. Stuart followed in the footsteps of over 1500 intrepid fell runners who have been successful in finishing the route inside 24 hours. This elite group also includes Peter Knott and Ali Welsh, who when they completed their Rounds, were members of Blackpool & Fylde AC and North Fylde AC respectively. Peter was the 241st person in 1982 to be successful and Ali was the 1247th in 2005. The route was traditionally said to be 72 miles long over 42 peaks, with a cumulative height of 27,000 feet. However with the onset of GPS, the distance can be more accurately calculated and the distance is now ac- cepted to be between 65 and 66 miles, with a total elevation of 26,000 feet, but as the Bob Graham website says: “Whatever the correct mileage figure, when completed with 42 peaks and all that ascent and descent, it is still a long way!” The route can be completed clockwise or anticlockwise. If taken clockwise the route starting at the Moot Hall goes over the following peaks: starting at the Moot Hall in Keswick, the circuit goes up Skiddaw, Great Calva, Blencathra, Clough Head, Great Dodd, Watson’s Dodd, Skybarrow Dodd, Raise, Whiteside, Lower Man, Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, Dollywagon Pike, Fairfield, Seat Sandal, Steel Fell, Calf Crag, High Raise, Seargeant Man, Thunscar Knott, Harrison Stickle, Pike O’Stickle, Rossett Pike, Bowfell, Esk Pike, Great End, Ill Crag, Broad Crag, Scafell Pike, Scafell, Yewbarrow, Red Pike, Steeple, Pillar, Kirk Fell, Great Gable, Green Gable, Brandreth, Grey Knotts, Dale Head, Hindscarth, Robinson and finally back to the Moot Hall. Phew, I feel exhausted thinking about the route! Bob Graham, who was running a guest house in Keswick at the time, first completed the route that bears his name in 1932. Although there were several attempts in the intervening years, the second successful circuit was not until 1960. This was by Alan Heaton of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers, who completed the route in 22 hours and 18 minutes. Up to the end of 2009 there had been 1529 successful attempts. The fastest circuit completed in 1982 was by ‘King’ Billy Bland, who ran it in an amazing 13 hours and 53 minutes. The first successful lady was Jean Davies during 1977. Among other legendary fell runners who have been successful are ‘Iron’ Joss Naylor, Bill Smith, author of ‘Stud Marks on the Summits’, Wendy Dodds, Helene Diamantides, Yiannis Tridimas of Bowland Fell Runners and Richard Askwith, author of ‘Feet in the Clouds’. In addition several have done extended circuits, including Joss Naylor, who ran 72 peaks in 24 hours. The record number of peaks in 24 hours is 77, held by Mark Hartnell. Both Wales and Scotland have their own classic circuits. In Snowdonia, Wales it is the Paddy Buckley Round; a route of 47 peaks including Snowdon, 61 miles and a total height of 28,000 feet. Starting and finishing at Glen Nevis Youth Hostel, the Scottish circuit is the Ramsey Round and this is 47 miles in length, taking in 24 summits including Ben Nevis, with a total climb of 28,500 feet. Now Stuart, there’s a few challenges for you to consider! Good Wishes: Everyone, I am sure will join ‘Wyldefyre’ in wishing one of our road running members, Ivor Cooke a speedy recovery after a recent operation. Also our thoughts are with our other athletes who are ill or injured - some who come to mind are Tash Gardner, and Malc Eadie, to name two, but I am sure there are other members with fitness concerns – and we wish them all a speedy return to training and competition. WIDER NEWS: Blackburn Harriers & AC are 100 years old this year and will be holding a dinner at Ewood Park to celebrate the anniversary on October 15th. Paul Dickinson, the BBC commentator is the guest speaker. Blackburn Harriers was established in 1910, but as a club really developed after the Second World War when the present Club President, George Kirby coached pupils at Pleckgate School on a 330 yard track and fed them into the Harriers squad. The club headquarters moved to the Witton Park track after it opened in 1958. Next year a new eight line track is to be laid, a new 400 seat stand and 60 metre indoor track built at Witton Park. This year also marked the 25th anniversary of our nearby club, Wesham Road Runners. We wish both clubs continued success in the future. Commonwealth Games: This month this event starts in Delhi and after all the traumas about unfinished accommodation, health concerns and security worries let’s hope the competition is exciting and thrilling, but always played in a sportsman and friendly manner.
