The Purple Paw Award
Sara Yeager has been a faithful volunteer at Hope Rescues for close to a year now. Last month
Blue Eyes got stuck in the fencing trying to get to some treats and when Sara went to pull her out
she was bit by Blue Eyes. Now, Blue Eyes did not mean to bite Sara but she was in a panic at the
time, and they have since made up just fine. We decided to honor Sara’s sacrifice to the rescue
with the famous “Purple Paw Award” for being wounded in the line of duty. Needless to say Sara
was very happy to get the award, and the stitches out too!

Casanova was a sweet old man, who waited a long
time in our rescue to find a home. Five months later,
he left us all. He was a gentle giant, a kindred soul.
He was kind to everyone, even if they did not show
him kindness in return.
From a broken down old “junkyard” dog, he arose to
a comic in silly hats. A smiling fool for the camera,
and a face you looked forward to seeing everyday.
Goodbye our sweet old man, may you find some hats
at the bridge to wear across when we come to get you
one more time.
The “Sugar Man”
Sugar Ray came into this world a happy little puppy. Being adopted as a young boy to a man who promised to love him, treat him with kindness, and take good care of this little bundle of joy. For awhile it
seemed as though that is what would be, but for some reason the man became less and less interested in
this pup, and eventually put him out of the house into a pen where some days he would remember to feed
him and some days he would not. As the days went by the dog grew weaker, skinnier, and more tired.
How long had it been since his last meal, we may never know. How long had it been since he was allowed
to run and play? How long before someone would care enough to stop and think of his suffering?
By the time that day did finally come, it was nearly too late for Sugar Ray. None of us can imagine what
this poor dog has been though, what he saw, what he dreamed, what he can never tell us.
You would think this is a crime wouldn’t you? To leave a dog in such a condition that he can barely stand.
You would think that someone surely would pay for this crime, obvious neglect, and abandonment, right?
Well, welcome to America, the land of the disposable pet ! The land where having a pet is a right, feeding
the pet is a maybe, and treating the pet with respect is a silly little act performed by childless women,
whose clock is ticking to the sound of woof, woof, or meow, meow. YEAH RIGHT.
Since taking in this dog we have experienced great support and hate mail all at the same time.
The law is turning into a major road block. Even though if you read the books this is a crime, a felony
actually, the one’s in charge of ending this kind of abuse don’t seem to want to touch this case, nor look at
the dog, nor even try to hold this person accountable. How do we end this when we won’t follow through?
Why do people abuse and neglect their pet in this country? Because the law allows it! Until someone
holds another responsible what is the fear of being caught?
Was I the only child punished for doing wrong? Or should all of us know what being held accountable
means? I tell you, we just don’t understand why this is so hard.
Sugar Ray is alive today, and I guess in the end that is all that really matters. But I still want to scream at
the fact that this even happens. Yes, there are worse things happening in this world, but this seems like
such a senseless act, common sense tells me that only an idiot could find this acceptable.
It makes me wonder why the lady of justice is actually wearing that blindfold.
PetCo Tree of Hope
This year when you shop at PetCo don’t forget the homeless pets. PetCo’s Annual Tree of Hope is in full
swing, and you can make a donation at the register every time you shop that will benefit local Animal
Shelters, including Hope Animal Rescues.
This is PetCo’s biggest event of the year, and we ask that everyone make a donation at the register to help
the ones without a home for Holidays.
New Section on Website
The testimonials page on our website is there to help others make the right decision when looking for a
new family member. As most of you have experienced, it is difficult to decide which shelter to adopt
from, which will offer the most follow up support for you and your new family member. We hope that
having this available to potential adopters will help them to decide to adopt their next pet from us.
Thank you to all of you who have sent in your thoughts about our rescue and the way you were treated.
We pride ourselves on giving you and our baby the best from start to finish.
We are looking for Grant Writers
With the new year comes new financial help for those who take advantage of what is
available. Hope Rescues depends solely on the kindness of others for their expenses and we
would like to ask the public for assistance in writing up some grants to help us achieve our
fundraising goals for the year 2008.
This would be on a volunteer basis, for Hope does not have any paid employees nor do we
have funds available to pay an employee.
If you have experience and feel that you could help make a difference in the lives of our
rescued pets by helping to support them in the upcoming year please contact us for an
assignment at [email protected] or phone us at 618-463-9983.
Together we CAN make a difference.
We are also looking for available grants, so if you surf the net often and come across one that
is available please feel free to pass the information along.
Trivia Night Sponsorships
Have a business you would like to promote? For $75.00 your company can sponsor a round during our
Trivia night. Before each round Hope will do a 30 second skit promoting your company and it’s services or goods. All sponsors need to provide us with a four line summary about your company. We
ask that you provide us with business cards to also hand out to those interested.

Sugar Ray - After a few weeks of small meals, he has gained 6 pounds, and is doing great! It is possible
that he may be able to go home before Christmas.
