August 22, 2016 • Issue 1 of 3 • 11 PAGES GET READY Emergency Nursing 2016 Coming to Los Angeles Kathleen E. Carlson, MSN, RN, CEN, FAEN Emergency Nursing 2016 is the premier educational and networking destination for emergency nurses. Every year I look forward to ENA’s conference for the chance to enrich my knowledge, refresh my skills and rejuvenate my spirit. This year’s conference will provide you with the newest, most cutting-edge education for emergency nurses, with countless networking opportunities. ENA listened to your feedback from last year’s conference – more education in fewer days. So we shortened Emergency Nursing 2016 by one day and added more instructional sessions, interactive training and hands-on learning. At Emergency Nursing 2016 you can: • Earn up to 37.25 contact hours from more than 150 education sessions • Expand your skills at the mass casualty event training session • Delve into rich research topic ideas at the IENR research lounge • Experience hands-on training in the ultrasound and cadaver labs • Explore the future of emergency nursing at ENA’s AdvancED in the Exhibit Hall We expanded the networking opportunities, too. Every attendee will have access to an opening party at Universal Studios Hollywood, an exciting ENA Foundation event at the spectacular Conga Room and more opportunities to mingle in the Exhibit Hall. I hope you will join me in taking advantage of this opportunity to recharge your mind and revitalize your soul at Emergency Nursing 2016. See you in Los Angeles. ENA President Kathleen E. Feed Your Soul The Passion Leak KATHLEEN BARTHOLOMEW, MN, RN, an author, speaker and educator, will ask whether you remember the spark that lit your passion for emergency nursing. What are the personal stories – your stories, your patients’ stories and loved ones’ stories – that feed and motivate your soul? Her presentation during the opening session Thursday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m., “A Passion for the Art of Nursing,” aims to help emergency nurses see “the greatest tool they have is actually themselves.” Sometimes the passion emergency nurses bring to their jobs fades. Their day-to-day enthusiasm can decrease so slowly their dream job might one day feel like just a job. Anita Dorr, RN, FAEN, Memorial Lecture & Luncheon speaker ANNE MANTON, PHD, RN, APRN, PMHNPBC, FAEN, FAAN, will share how to reverse the passion leak in her presentation Thursday, Sept. 15, at 12:30 p.m. Manton is a specialist in psychiatric and mental healthcare, an ENA past president with decades of ENA involvement and also serves as the editor in chief of the Journal of Emergency Nursing. Disaster Preparedness Training JOSEPH KOTORA, DO, was a Sept. 11 first responder. He also responded to Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Kotora is the public health emergency officer for Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune & Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, among many positions. He also served as a Marine battalion surgeon in Iraq for two years. Kotora will lead the mass casualty simulation event during the opening session Thursday, Sept. 15. Emergency Nursing 2016 attendees will have the opportunity to learn from his expertise in disaster preparedness as he presents two interrelated hazard and risk assessment tools: the Haddon Matrix and 360-degree threat assessment. “If people are prepared to handle the first week of a disaster, then they’re probably better off than 90 percent of the people who don’t put a lot of emphasis on disaster preparedness,” said Kotora. The Health Beat Goes On Sometimes, even when the passion is still going strong, you need a bit of relief from the stresses of emergency nursing and the risks of burnout. That’s where ZUBIN DAMANIA, MD, founder of Turntable Health, comes in. He and his alter ego, internet sensation ZDoggMD, invite attendees to have fun and become inspired during his closing session, “The Beat of Health 3.0,” on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 4:30 p.m. ZDoggMD addresses issues in the healthcare system with pop and hip-hop music parodies. Songs like “Readmission,” which parodies R. Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix),” are both funny and familiar to anyone in the healthcare world. ZDoggMD will also perform a new song, “Dear Nurses” – a riff on Tupac Shakur’s “Dear Mama” – which celebrates nurses and their crucial work and carries emotional heft. For more information about Damania or to watch ZDoggMD videos, visit http://zdoggmd.com/. The Emergency Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. The Emergency Nurses Association is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP #2322. CONFERENCE | #EN16 4 EDUCATION HANDS-ON SESSIONS: Ultrasound and Cadaver Labs F or those who want practical hands-on training from top faculty and the chance to earn continuing education recognition points, don’t miss this year’s ultrasound and procedural cadaver labs. At the ultrasound labs, which are offered during four one-hour sessions Friday, Sept. 16, lab instructors will help participants develop expertise in inserting IVs regardless of the situation, thanks to hands-on skill training in ultrasound-guided IV insertion. After the session, participants can go back to their jobs more proficient in IV insertion, allowing them to decrease the number of sticks when minutes count. Sessions will be held from 8-9 a.m., 9:15-10:15 a.m., 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-2 p.m. Those who participate in an ultrasound lab can earn one CERP. The fee for participation is $50. The hands-on procedural cadaver labs, also offered Friday, Sept. 16, in two three-hour sessions, will review relevant anatomy associated with emergency care procedures. Attendees will learn from top faculty leading the sessions. It’s the perfect opportunity to enhance your understanding of various procedures and their associated benefits and risks. Choose between sessions held from 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-4 p.m. Those who participate in a procedural cadaver lab can earn three CERPs. The fee for participation is $100. Both the ultrasound and procedural cadaver labs have limited capacity, and registration is required for these popular sessions.
