Glassy Metal - Florida Artist Blacksmith Association
The Plorido
Clinker Drecrker
President's Corner
By Bill Robertson
It is hot out there and I know Patty and I have
not been spending as much time in the blacksmith shop as
we should, but as your president I feel it is my duty to
motivate everyone to get out there and be productive
blacksmiths. So those of you who have not started your
October conference projects for the auction let me throw
some guilt your way. And for those of you who don't
respond to guilt that easily, I remind you that there are
cash prizes "people's choice awards" for the show and
tell display items you bring. Also, new this year, is a
special project, coordinated by Jeff Mohr, for the auction.
Jeff is forging a tree limb similar to the tree he made for
the Madison Conference last year and he is asking
everyone to forge a leaf of your creative design for it.
The leaves can be sent or given to Jeff when finished, or
they can be brought and attached at the conference.
Your leaf will become part of a treasured piece of art
history. So, in addition to guilt,' I add money and fame as
motivators.
You will be receiving the 2004 FABA conference
brochures in the mail toward the end of August. On
board are Jim Hrisoulas demonstrating knife making,
Chris Winterstein demonstrating traditional iron and Rob
Gardner and Eric Velleca architectural iron. In addition
to the auction and family programs, there will be a special
building project just for the kids Saturday morning, hosted
by Home Depot. I am told it involves hammers so this
could be a great introduction to the hammer for those
future young blacksmiths.
You will be receiving ballots soon for the 2004
election cycle. Please take a minute to vote and send
them in. The results will be announced at the October
conference. Thanks to all who
have stepped forward to
volunteer for the position
openings. I am glad to see
candidates for all of the
openings. Trustee, Jerry Grice
asked to resign from the
FABA board so that he could
devote his energy to fighting a
new cancer that' has surfaced.
With reluctance the board, at
the July meeting accepted. his
resignation and Tom Kennedy was appointed to take the
remainder of his term. Also it is with great sadness to
tell you that former FABA Treasurer Lydia Burn's son
passed away suddenly July 2. Our hearts go out to Dave
and Lydia. In other news the board has voted to return
the conference to Barberville for 2005, as there is not
enough strength in membership in the scattered SW
region to pull off a conference in that area at this time.
For those of you who could not make it to the July
10 meeting in Barberville you missed a big time, and the
gate dedication (which now rests in a small garden next to
the blacksmith shop appropriately planted with aloe). There
was a bunch of great tools at the tailgate sales, a large iron
in the hat raffle generous lunch with at least five different
desserts and a great demonstration by Dan Tull who didn't
even seem to notice the heat. Maybe there is something
behind the name of his shop, Dan T's Inferno! If you did
miss the event however, all is not lost; Dan tells me that he
accepts students at his shop, for personal instruction at the
rate of $100/day. You can call him in Newnan Georgia
(which is just west of Atlanta) at 770-253-8396.
Don't forget to drink lots of water while working,
and be safe out there. Bill

News From The Southeast

Arport.
A small group met and started building coal forges to use at the October 8,9 and 10th Conference at Tanah Keeta

:L--
Charlie Stemmann had gathered the necessary tools and materials; John O'Brien furnished the plans, with some
tweeking by Charlie.
Mike McCoy did the welding, Andrew Hoffacker did the band sawing, John O'Brien
drilled, Keith Andrew and John Struthers did the deburring and Nadine Andrews worked on her quilt.
There was a good amount ofwork accomplished, but more will be needed next week to finish up.
Plans are moving ahead; under Anne Reynolds guidance, for the annual conference to be held October 8th, 9th and
10th. The details are being taking care of by the Committee.

"Conference Transportation"
A Note from Tom Kennedy, Conference Transportation
Hello everyone, just wanted to put out the word to request help in getting people to the conference this year. We
started a "buddy" system last year to help defray the costs of travel and lodging for members attending the
conference where members could share rides and split hotel rooms and perhaps even stay at the homes of other
members who live near the conference site. I don't know how successful it was, but if even a few members were
able to attend the conference because of it then it was worth doing.
The more members, especially new members and older members who might be on fixed incomes who can attend
the better. I believe that our strength and our future success is firmly tied not only the number of members attending
the conference, but also the cross section of older and younger members who attend. Our conference is perhaps
the greatest opportunity for knowledge and skills to be shared and passed on to future generations. We gain a lot
of strength by having members from a diverse number of backgrounds.
Having a conference that moves around the state gives members in other regions a chance to shine both locally and
with the organization as a whole. It also give the broader membership the benefit ofusing and enjoying facilities
they would not normally travel to for a regular monthly meeting. But it also causes financial strain for some members
due to added travel time and increased expense for food and lodging.
Many of our members might have homes that could be opened to provide lodging, or perhaps a bunk in a travel
trailer or RV that could be shared to provide accomodations to a fellow member(s). Likewise, members who
carpooled to the conference together could perhaps split the cost of a motel room to reduce costs.
So, I humbly ask our regional coordinators to help broker some kind of sign-up list in each region to provide the
above opportunities to all our fellow members. Take a poll or put a line on the membership sign-in sheet
to gather lists of people who need either transport or lodging, and those who are willing to share it. Kim, I believe is
trying to put together something to put in the Clinker Breaker but she still needs your help. She has been fighting a
running battle with crappy printers trying to get our newsletter out on time and under budget. A battle, to her credit,
that she has not given up on. A similar list or blurb could also be put on the website.
!
However, the bulk ofthis will best be served at our monthly regional meetings, especially since many ofthe
members who would benefit the most from this do not have access to the website. Please help make the
conference a success, it is essential for the fellowship and the financial future of our group. Let's show what a family
forged in fire can be.
With many thanks,
Tom Kennedy

Glassy Metal - Report by Sarah McMurray
The April2004 issue of Discover Magazine had afabulous article called, "Glassy Metal: Hardeq strongec
and better - the material ofthe future" The article was originally written by Brad Lemley with photography
by Joe McNally. Sarah McMurray (SE FABA member) took time to summarize it for us to enjoy. In her
words, "This was so neat, Ijust had to share this!
"
There's a new metal that acts like glass made by "Liquid Metal Technologies"! The company alloys five elements;
zirconium, titanium, nickel, copper and beryllium. Razor blades can be molded with the edge already on and they
stay sharp a year! It can also be made as a foam. The foam is 99% air but 100 times stronger than polystyrene. Golf
clubs made of the new plastic metal, trade named "Liquidmetal2," add 30 yards to a drive.
The strongest metal, titanium, can hoist 87.5 tons as a bar 1" in diameter.A bar made of "Vitreloy" Another new
metal type can lift 150 tons. The secret of the strength is in the lack of crystal patterning. Regular metal as it cools,
solidifies into a lattice work of crystals. The repeating space between this pattern is called the "grain boundaries".
When exposed to oxygen and stresses, they cause the metal to dent, rust and tear. The new "amorphous" metal has
no crystal structure.Usingthe five aforementioned elements whose atomic size differs widely, causes the metallic
glass to cool without the traditional lattice pattern of a metal. The atoms are so different in size that they don't line up
in a pattern, but at random. This accounts for its unusual properties.
So far, liquid metal is expensive: $15.00 a pound. Scientists are working on amethod using it with stainless steel that
would bring the price down to about $3.00 apound. A 1" bar ofthis would lift 275 tons. However, there are still
some problems, like shear failure, to be worked out.
In the future, we may see items of this new moldable metal like: watch cases, artificial hips and knees, ultralight
cases for electronics/PDA's, non-dulling surgical blades, and cannon shells. Wonder how it would work in the
forge?!
Summarized from the April 2004 issue of "Discover Magazine". See www.liquidmetal.com.

A Week at the John C Campbell Folk School
During the last week of October, Juan Holbrook, his wife Linda and I made a pilgrimage to the John C. Campbell
Folk School. Juan and I had believed we were going to attend a blacksmithing class, but what we found was so
much more.
Nestled high in the mountains ofNorth Carolina, the sprawling campus of the school gave us plenty of time to walk
and appreciate the beauty of the woods. Not a skyscraper, neon sign or billboard to be seen.
For the many students in attendance, each were able to pursue there own craft under the multitude of talented
artisans. Whether it be coppersmithing, basket weaving or the doll making (which one resident dubbed the "action
figure" class) class. The heart of the school for my week, however was the Francis Whitaker Blacksmith shop.
For a young smith such as myself, the shop was a paradise of coal and iron. Having worked little outside of my
colonial shop in St. Augustine, I was in awe of the mass of tools available to the students. For many of you reading
this, things like inline treadle hammers and "Big Blue" are commonplace; for me they are luxury! No hand pumped
bellows, no charcoal forge, and no footwork to spin the grindstone.
Twelve student forges line the walls of the shop, and worktables form the center.Always as the forges were lit in the
morning and the hammers laid to rest each night we were gazed upon by a portrait of Francis Whitaker. I did not
know him when I began my week at the school, but after spending time with those who did, I began to understand a
little ofwhat Francis was responsible for in helping keep our traditions and methods alive.
Under the excellent tutelage of Clay Spencer and Tal Harris, we were taught to mortise and tenon, p~inchand drift,
and assemble the various projects with which we were armed. My project was a grille design from Pas Ironwork
by Otto Schrnieler. This was a far more difficult project than I had anticipated, but I went in fighting. Days started
early and the anvils rang late, often until ten o'clock at night, with Clay and Tal taking shifts to stay late and help us
out. I saw many things that amazed me during that week including a visit to the home and shop of Tim Kris who has
a private collection of ironwork and tools, containing everything fio medieval anvils to ironwork by Samuel Yellin,
Tom Latane, Peter Ross and many other blacksmiths including Jeff Mohr (our own FABAVice President). One of
the most amazing things I saw was Tal and a student put a right angle bend on a piece of 1" square bar, on the
diagonal! By the end of the week, I started feeling pressure because I had hoped to have the piece finished, but I
was assured that I should not w o w , as nobody would have their pieces done in a week (Many students had signed
in the class for a two-week session). At the end of my stay I had my bundle of forgings (Juan, I promise I'm going
to finish it soon), and a sense of kinship with my other students, as they had become fiiends and teachers also.
I must pause to offer a word of thanks for the many kindnesses shown to me by Juan Holbrook, he is an asset to
FABAand I am proud to have a fiiend and guiding hand such as his. I cannot thank FABAenough for offering me
this scholarship. It has helped firm my resolve that blacksmithing is not only the career, but also the passion that I
shall follow for a very long time.
