GUEST SPEAKER: MAYOR ANDREW GILLUM
With a passion for public service, and the ability to motivate and mobilize people
to action, Mayor Gillum is recognized Statewide and Nationally as an emerging leader.
At the age of 23, he became the youngest person ever elected to the Tallahassee City
Commission. At the time of the election, he was a student at Florida A&M University,
majoring in political science. In August 2014, at age 35, he was elected Mayor of
Tallahassee.
Born on July 26, 1979, in Miami, he was raised in Gainesville as the fifth of seven
children. Upon graduation from Gainesville High School in 1998, he was recognized by the
Gainesville Sun as one of the city’s “Persons of the Year.”
He has traveled with two International Delegations and, in February 2007, he
participated in the City of Tallahassee Sister City exchange trip to Ramat HaSharon, Israel.
He is responsible for a number of community enrichment projects including construction
of The Palmer Munroe Center, which serves as a haven for area youth, and revitalizing Gaines Street and parts of
Midtown. Gillum’s track record in Tallahassee is one of community outreach and fostering economic growth.
He led the City Commission’s efforts to institute a policy which returned $5.6 million back to Tallahassee’s local
economy, reduced the initial security deposit for businesses, and enhanced opportunities for job creation.
