We had Littles who made s’mores and roasted hot dogs over an open fire for the first time in their lives at our annual Halloween party. There were Littles that started talking about college and life after high school. We heard stories of Littles who broke out of their shell and started new activities they didn’t before imagine. But as we look back at our matches this past year, it is impossible not to look toward the future. Because of the time spent with a Big Brother or Big Sister, our Littles will have the tools to move into adulthood successfully and positively. They are learning about trust, respect and responsibility. They are growing more confident and developing stronger relationships. Our Littles are learning how to make good choices. They are doing better in school and at home. Because of the support and encouragement from their Bigs, our Little Brothers and Little Sisters are growing up stronger and more successful. Their futures are brighter. And because of that, so is ours. Thank you for being a part of the transformation of our community’s youth and our community. By supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa, you are helping our youth reach their potential, truly changing their lives for the better, forever. Most sincerely, Carrie Carrie Rankin President, Board of Directors Maria Thanks to our Magic Makers for helping Start Something BIG in 2011! A-Line E.D.S. Allen Hospital James N. Justice’s father had been out of the picture since he was three, and Justice moved in with his grandma, Glenda. She turned to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program when Justice turned seven, because a positive male role model was exactly what he needed. He longed for someone to do “guy things” with. In April of 2011, Justice and Glenda received notification that Big Brothers Big Sisters had found the perfect match for Justice. They were beyond ecstatic; Justice created a countdown until the day he’d get to meet Adam, his Big Brother. Adam was equally as excited, but nervous, to meet his new Little Brother, as he knew how much this experience would change him and positively impact Justice’s life. On the first day they met, Glenda told Adam, “He’s been looking forward to this since the day we signed him up for the program!” At the start, Justice was rather shy toward Adam. But now, almost a year into their match, these two are as comfortable as can be with one another and meet at least once a week. It’s the highlight of Justice’s week. There’s no doubt that Adam is fully enjoying his time with Justice either. Adam makes sure to touch base on the phone in between visits and always sets the best example he can, by being consistent with their meetings, and showing that he’s interested and committed to Justice and ensuring that he succeeds in life. This is an example Justice had never before witnessed with any other male in his life. Justice says he enjoys everything he does with Adam. It really doesn’t matter to him what they do together, as long as he gets to hang out with him. Justice is highly interested in interacting with, and learning about, dogs. Fortunately, Adam has two dogs and they go on walks together. They also enjoy playing and exchanging video games whenever they can. Justice and Adam have only been matched for 10 months, but great impact has already been made. A difference has become evident in Justice over the course of his time with Adam; his self confidence and overall mood has significantly changed for the better. Glenda is thrilled with her decision to enroll Justice in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, and could not have asked for a better Big Brother for Justice. She describes Adam as a wonderful person who is the perfect fit for her grandson, and she’s thankful everyday that Adam is a part of their lives. Thanks to Adam, Justice’s life has changed for the better, forever. Last October, BBBS held a drawing contest and Justice won! 2 2011AnnualReportFINAL.indd 3 2/28/2012 2:35:44 PM friendship What happened in 2011? Our Littles have demonstrated improvements in the following areas: 74% are thinking about their future with plans to finish high school and attend college 68% have had a reduction in their unexcused absences 85% have shown improvement in the areas of competence, confidence, and levels of caring Results taken from the 2011 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa Youth Outcomes Survey Start Something BIG in 2012 and change a child’s life for the better, forever. Volunteer Become a School-Based or Community-Based Big. School-Based Bigs meet at their Little’s school for 45-60 minutes per week for a full year. Youth in this program are in grades K-12. Being a School-Based Big is as elementary as putting a friend in a child’s life, and as essential as putting hope into a child’s future. In the Community-Based program, Bigs meet with their Littles for 6-10 hours per month in the community. An 18 month commitment is required for Bigs. Being a Community-Based Big is about sharing simple everyday moments with a child in the community. Donate Every little bit helps to make a BIG difference! One hundred percent of our financial support is received from the local community. Thank you for investing in brighter lives and a brighter future by investing in mentoring. Participate Enjoy fun events while supporting youth in our community.
