Kevin Clark . Hello all, As I write this article we have just finished our Coastal Cup, a sailboat race from San Francisco to Santa Barbara and next weekend will be our Summer Sailstice event at the club. By the time you read this article they will all be over. And you can look forward to a July as busy as June. Maintaining these events gives us an excellent status with other yacht clubs. The Coastal Cup is a standalone race and no other California yacht club has an event like this. The Summer Sailstice brings people from the yachting community and some non-yachting curious onlookers to EYC. Our July is also busy. Our juniors will have a float in the Alameda Independence Day parade, go cheer them on. Also we will have the 2nd Half Opener which starts the second half of the sailboat racing season along with a great party afterward. On a financial note, we are limited on our non-member income because of our non-profit status. I was assigned to make some studies to try to change these limits. Below is a summary of 2 studies. A study was completed about the profit/ non-profit status of the club. We studied a change from a Non-Profit 501(C)(7), which is what we are, to a for profit entity. To set this change up we would need to start up another corporation. All ownership and licenses would have to be changed to the new entity. There were some advantages, less scrutiny from government, income unlimited, no restrictions on type of memberships and unlimited investments. The disadvantage was cost of transition; change of property title would increase taxes, insurance changes, legal problem with non–members, mortgage rewritten. A problem also with this change could be the actions of future Board of Directors. A 2nd study was made to develop a separate Corporation or LLC as an event company. Cost of starting up this entity and additional staffing were considered. The income for this entity would come from renting out the club and catering. This is a viable company but it was determined that it would not be in the best interests of the club or its members to pursue this action. Thank You, Kevin Clark ENCINAL YACHT CLUB · 1251 PACIFIC MARINA · ALAMEDA · CA · 94501 · 510.522.3272 4 JULY 2012 SOUNDINGS FROM THE BRIDGE... Vice Commodore Michael Andrews and Rear Commodore Susan Jacquelin From Vice Commodore Michael Andrews: 2012 Coastal Cup The offshore tragedies of earlier this season involving Low Speed Chase and Aegean made me very anxious about the success of our 21st consecutive Coastal Cup. In my opinion, a significant proportion of the prestige that Encinal Yacht Club enjoys as a serious racing club is derived from our running of the Coastal Cup each year. I am pleased therefore that 28 boats registered for the 2012 Race, up from the 19 of 2011. I am a little perplexed however that only 18 boats started the Race, just two more than did last year. The 10 boats that registered and did not start, failed to do so for a variety of reasons. Some very legitimate, including a serious illness in the family, Steve Waterloo, 1st in Division and 2nd overall, also an engine that failed during delivery from Milano Trophy Winner for First EYC boat Southern California and damage to a rudder shortly before the race that couldn't be addressed in time. Still these numbers represent a disappointing differential between boats initially registered and boats starting the race. The Race returned to Santa Barbara this year and the 18 boats that did start ranged in size from Jim Gibbs' Express 27, Moonlight to Brack Duker's Santa Cruz 70, Holua. Starters also included one double handed entry, Marc Sykes J 35, Pegasus. 14 boats finished with Holua winning the lowest rated division "A" and also recorded both the fastest elapsed and corrected times to take line honors and the overall win. Ed Sanford's J 105, Creative won division "C" and our own Steve Waterloo's Cal 40, Shaman took division "D". Shaman was an impressive second overall with members Kevin Clark and Larry Duke among those aboard. The fleet enjoyed the usual variety of conditions the Coastal Cup is known for from "gear busting" winds reported to have exceeded 35 knots at times to the light air common in the Santa Barbara channel. Of the four boats that withdrew, the Catalina 36, Seabiscuit retired at Monterey with damage to her mainsail and the Class 40, California Condor retired to Morro Bay with damage to one of her two rudders. I am proud of the fleet and their demonstration of the exercise (of) good judgment and seamanship; together we satisfied the United States Coast Guard that the participants are competent, capable and should continue to be permitted to race offshore. Our friends at the beautiful Santa Barbara Yacht Club deserve and have my great appreciation ENCINAL YACHT CLUB · 1251 PACIFIC MARINA · ALAMEDA · CA · 94501 · 510.522.3272 5 JULY 2012 SOUNDINGS for their hospitality. SBYC General Manager, Craig Wilberg was most gracious in our correspondence. Upon our arrival Thursday night, SBYC Race Director, Brad Schaupeter handed over the keys to his ideally located office which we proceeded to "occupy" for several days. Their Executive Assistant, Kourtney Wright made our awards ceremony at SBYC possible, around a large wedding and their Club's Wilmot Hughes Ladies Race, all three of which took place Saturday. Finally, I am particularly indebted to Commodore Victor Early, Principal Race Officer Charles Hodgkins, Rear Commodore Susan Jacquelin and our Web-Master and expert in so many things technical, Don Ahrens for their invaluable assistance in running the Race. I very literally could not have done it without them. For Coastal Cup pictures see pages 8-9 From Rear Commodore Susan Jacquelin: 2012 Spring Twilight Series We held our fifth and final Friday night Spring Twilight race on June 16. This casual, highly successful series drew 25 entries this year, ranging from Tony Pohl’s Farr 40, Twisted, and Don Ahrens’ Farr 36, Red Cloud, to Paul Mueller’s Mercury 18, Loco 2, and Lee Perry’s Harbor 20, Obsession. Seasoned skippers and brand new crew members raced ‘around the cans’ in the Estuary from Coast Guard Island to Jack London Square. We began in April, and conditions ranged from constant, stiff breezes (we got to the Lounge before dark) to light, fluky air (we got to the Lounge after dark). Sometimes cold, sometimes warm, it was always fun and that’s what Bay Area racing is all about. Photo by Darrell Powell-Ford Thirteen of the boats belonged to EYC members, and to entice all racers back to the Club, Commodore Victor Early and Vice Commodore Michael Andrews took action-packed videos all along the course and had them playing on the bar televisions before most race boats were even put away in their slips. Fred Fago took his as-always superb still photos, and Webmaster Don Ahrens posted them on our website the evening of each race. Soundings Editor Nicki PowellFord included the photos in each month’s edition. This year we began giving a first-place prize of an etched “EYC Race Day Winner” glass to each division—another hit with all competitors, as were the great sail bags made by Dominic Marchal and awarded as Twilight Series prizes. Many, many thanks to our excellent Race Committee: Staff Commodore Charles Hodgkins, Small Boat Fleet Captain Chris Golian, Jon Fowkes, Shelley Bliss, Darrel Powell-Ford, Larry Westland, Kathryn Hodgkins, Nicki Powell-Ford, Margaret Fago, and Maryann Hinden. Great job, Team!! We’ll start our Summer Twilight Series on July 13. This is an excellent series for experienced racers as well as those just beginning. It’s also a great opportunity to join a low-key Race Committee and learn. For non-racing members, it’s always fun to see the action from the Lounge—our finish is right off our docks, and you can mingle with the racers afterwards and be greatly entertained by their ‘sea stories’. May 14, 2012 Renee, I want to commend you on the fantastic brunch you and your staff put together yesterday. My family and I enjoyed it very much. As new members, we made our plans to attend the Mother's Day brunch simply to enjoy the club dining room and meet some other members. We were not expecting too much in terms of food quality or variety, just wanted to have some traditional breakfast fare in a nice setting. We were amazed at the quality and variety of food that your staff produced. Everything was so beautifully presented and well prepared, it was really a pleasure to sample everything. The french toast (my long-time breakfast favorite) was wonderful, the eggs beautifully done, and the beef medallions were well-loved at our table. With the friendly service and beautiful harp playing, it was a great mother's day treat for my wife and my mother. Please pass on our appreciation to your kitchen and service staff. Lorenzo Puertas, L.Ac. We visited the beautiful club today. I am proud of the condition of the club. I am proud of still belonging. My family came with me today. I sure will come again soon. Corinthian YC. The Cripple Cruise Out Has JUNE been the BEST weather for an early summer in Northern California or WHAT? June 8-10 was no exception as the EYC cruisers crossed the Bay to Tiburon for a weekend at Corinthian. Why the Cripple Cruise Out you ask? Well the Captains Brunelle are naming this cruise in honor of Captain Mark's summer on crutches. (I fought the dock and the dock won.) So although Mark ducked surgery, the doc says "No Weight" on the knee for weeks. No worries, we left Aldebaran in Alameda and rafted up at the very cozy Tiburon Lodge, a short but speedy 1/4 mile from CYC. Corinthian is a very desirable destination for sailors up and down the Bay. This makes dock space and berthing commitments an awkward challenge. The Rear Commodore and Club Manager gave the dire expectations of 5-7 boats plus anyone who wants to stay on one of the 6 CYC mooring balls. There was a wait list from the first day of sign-ups so the Captains B offered a bottle of wine to anyone volunteering to hook up on a ball. Aye Aye mates, never let anyone say the EYC cruisers aren't Photo by Charles Hodgkins game for adventure! Captain Kidd not only volunteered Sashay for a ball, he doubled up with the Lynams as guests! Good on you mates! Next up was our intrepid Cruise Directors themselves - Jim and Jenn Vickers who picked a ball for Joyride. Don't forget that the Vickers travel with their pair of Schnauzers so the moorings make the doggy potty runs a little more rugged than a walk down the dock! After this, Steve Katzaroff decided to move off the wait list and onto a ball to not miss this weekend. Steve has a lifelong SoCal friend who lots of you have met - John flies up from LA 3-4 times a year to sail VROOM to our cruise-outs with Steve and the EYC gang. Thanks for coming John! Last, one of our First Year members Hugh McIntyre & Cecelia Riddell decided they were just as seaworthy as the others and signed up to put their Catalina 309, Encore out on a ball too. Now, this wasn't our first ride into Corinthian so we knew CYC’s idea of 5-7 boats on the guest dock was an easy 8. Trouble arose on the last day before the event when a 40' member's race ENCINAL YACHT CLUB · 1251 PACIFIC MARINA · ALAMEDA · CA · 94501 · 510.522.3272 17 JULY 2012 SOUNDINGS boat pulled rank for the end section of the guest dock. “Not to worry” said Rear Commodore Eric. He took his boat out of the Marina to run a race and gave his slip to one of our boats. On arrival, Club Manager John quickly assigned every slip, that vacated on short notice, to EYC and by 0900 Saturday, we had inside berthing for all of the mooring ball volunteers! Put it on the record that the Vickers decided that the adventure and the view was worth staying out on the ball instead of rafting up inside. That, my friends, is the yachting spirit. No complaints, no hesitation, take the Photo by Charles Hodgkins path less travelled. Year after year, the seamanship and cooperation that EYC cruisers have when we're guests at other clubs NEVER FAILS TO MAKE US PROUD! The rest of the fleet who came by sea were Mike Pernitzke and Ina Tabak on Nova with Dave & Anneka Dury as guests - The Captains B are deeply grateful to Nova's crew for taking on the dock manager role for us and making sure that all boats were assisted and tied up where they needed to be to maximize the space we'd been given. Chuck Hero and Edie Walker came on the Lynda Gail; Carol and Bill Blackburn on Bastante; Roland and Galen Goff brought their daughter Pam and son-in-law Bob on Jolly Mon (also regular guests at EYC events - good to see them again!); Sam & Christine Benson rode in on the trusty Turtle and Bill Brown and Joanne Allison rounded out the fleet on Bonne Vie Duex (FYI, his terrific Catalina 380 is up for sale. Bill is definitely the kind of man to follow behind on a boat so if you know anyone, this is a yacht you can recommend with full confidence-contact Bill Brown himself or Dinah at Farrallone). Let us not forget our land yacht cruisers, Charles Hodgkins and Kathryn Munn and Kevin & Liddy Clark who drove in. Before heading out to dinner, sumptuous appetizers were served on the dock and Captain Karen thanked the Mooring Ball Volunteers; even though most of them got to the docks, we wanted them to know that good things come around to those who take one for the team. We had 35 people for dinner (counting our healthy list of drive ins). The always excellent Mexican Restaurant, Guaymas, hosted us in a private space just above and open to the main dining room which had a spectacular view of the Bay. A super team of wait staff served us Steak Fajitas, Chicken Tamales, and a special Camarones (shrimp) dish. All came in heaping, steaming platefuls and no one went home hungry. Just superb! We were treated to a bit of local fame that night. Carlos Santana is apparently a regular at Guaymas and Christine Benson spotted him coming in for dinner dressed in his signature white hat and in a tie dyed shirt. He dined alone right next to our group. It was nice to see someone of international fame come in and enjoy his night out without being interrupted by the other diners. Sunday was another pure blue sky morning and after a fine dockside breakfast (Sam and Mike both brought exceptionally delicious homemade fare - Mike's famous homemade sausage and Sam's outrageous home smoked salmon) fizzes and coffee, we're pretty sure that the fleet all took the long way home……..As it should be. Thanks to all, The Captains B Mark and Karen Brunelle. Andrew Nelson Summer is officially here. Our first round of classes kicked off on Monday, June 18th. With over 100 sailors enrolled in our morning and afternoon classes we're off to a strong start. It's still not too late to sign up for sessions II and III, but they are filling up quickly. We have plenty of returning staff and a few new faces this summer, including two out of town instructors and three rookie instructors who just earned their US Sailing Level One certification. I'm lucky to be backed by a great staff this summer, which includes... Andrew Godfrey: Growing up in our program, Andrew will be a sophomore at San Jose State University in the fall. He is a Laser sailor by trade, but is trying to start a college sailing team. Jean Rutledge: Has been coaching for several summers here at EYC, also having grown up in the program she brings tons of energy and enthusiasm everyday. Our youngest Opti sailors are always having fun in her class. Kirsten Rutlege: Jean's little sister Kirsten is also coaching Opti sailing this summer. A junior next year at UC Santa Cruz, Kirsten is a great mix of patient and goofy. Kirsten is also involved with ROTC and likes to play volleyball. Paul Foley: Paul is one of our visiting instructors from the Seattle area this summer. I coached him when he was younger and now he sails for Western Washington University when he's not sailing lasers. Paul recently passed his US Sailing Level II course and will be an assistant Race Team coach. Photo by Tony Shaffer Cody Young: Probably our coolest instructor, all the kids, young and old, look up to Cody. He coaches the Teen Intermediate FJ Class, where his humor and chill demeanor are appreciated by his pupils. Alex Delle Cese: Another Teen Intermediate FJ coach, Alex has been in our program since he was 7 years old. Look for the biggest straw hat and chances are you'll find him under it. Martin Abade: Martin is our head Opti coach this summer. He's from Argentina and has worked on the East Coast in summers past. He enjoys kite boarding, skiff sailing, and is also the laser coach for the Indian national team. We're looking forward to having him around. When not sailing he's busy studying law. ENCINAL YACHT CLUB · 1251 PACIFIC MARINA · ALAMEDA · CA · 94501 · 510.522.3272 21 JULY 2012 SOUNDINGS Liz Felando: A senior at UC Berkeley next year, Liz is an active sailor on Cal's team. She is friends with Megan (Seven) Hayes and is also her regular crew. Liz is originally from San Diego, where she learned how to sail. She has spent the last couple summers in the Bay Area coaching at Treasure Island. Olivia Godfrey: A first year instructor, Olivia will be a senior at Alameda High School next fall. When she's not coaching Optis, she's busy with her own sailing. A talented 420 skipper and captain of her high school team, she has a summer of big events lined up. Photo by Darrell Powell-Ford Ellie Glenn: Ellie is another first year instructor, who also participates on the Race Team and does High School Sailing. Ellie wants to go into the Naval Academy, and recently just returned from "boot camp." Even though she loves the color pink, she's probably still tougher than most of the boys. Maya Dornbrand-Lo: Just passing her Level One class last week, Maya is Oliva's crew. The two of them have been a pair in the 420 for the last couple of years. They have a real chance to win some big local events and take their game to the national stage. Ted Netland: Ted just got back from a year of study abroad in London. A sailor for Middlebury he's excited that his university's sailing team will have varsity status next fall when he returns. The start of summer also means it's regatta season! EYC sailors recently traveled to Richmond for BAYS #2. The two-day event saw good participation from all Bay Area clubs. Hot temperatures knocked down the breeze a bit, but we still had plenty of wind to get 9 races off on the outside course, and 12 races off for Green Fleet. Guy Raber and Devon Shortridge had a stellar regatta, finishing 2nd out of the 15 boat fleet. Bennett Helland won the 25 boat Opti Green Fleet, which had 7 other EYC sailors participating. Drake Hayes with crew Anthony Beron finished 2nd in the two boat FJ fleet against "guys that both had beards and tattoos." The two 13 year-olds managed to beat the bearded boys in a couple races and held their own. Oliva and Maya will be traveling to Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota this weekend to participate in Ida Lewis, which is US Sailing's youth women's double-handed championship regatta. This will be their second year sailing the event together and they hope to do well. Wish them all luck as they represent EYC. I’m also always looking for good ideas, stories and more pictures to supplement these articles so just let me know! Here goes with third decade of our Club’s history: The third decade for EYC was a period of continuing change, with some definite ups and downs. The club began the decade continuing to build from the resurgence in the early 1900s. It ended the decade with a quiet period, with the First World War in the middle. This decade represented a time of tremendous membership turnover. The 1912 season was a highlight during this period. The club president and son of a prior EYC generation of leaders, S. Montgomery Haslett embarked on a membership drive. He brought in 125 members over a four month period by reducing the initiation fee of $20, to a meager $5. Major club alterations were then made in 1913, which improved the club’s amenities with reconstructed bowling alleys, 20 new bathhouses, a handball court and enlarged ballroom ENCINAL YACHT CLUB · 1251 PACIFIC MARINA · ALAMEDA · CA · 94501 · 510.522.3272 25 JULY 2012 SOUNDINGS and lounge. Although useful, the alterations were bulky and added a more boxed appearance to the clubhouse. There were many parties, dances, bowling and handball tournaments in addition to the on the water small boat regattas and picnic cruises. The small boats remained the popular fleet; although during the mid-decade the fleet expanded to some larger 20ft boats (‘Dory’s”) and larger yachts. During this time the club rejoined the PICYA. The revival ended with the First World War during the war years of 1917-18. Although the war was good for shipbuilding, it was detrimental to yachting and clubs. Clubs were to pay a ten percent tax on dues paid. Members were also lost to military duty. So the decade ended on a quiet note following the war and much change.
