If you are curious about their Mexico adventure, see Joyride’s exploits on SAILBLOGS. Where it comes to recent events on the water, it was a rough day for our Jack Frost racers on January 10th. The wind was very light in the morning, but no matter the wait, the Race Committee (RC) was not All Photos Compliments of Ray Thomas able to launch a race that day. Such are the trials of winter sailing! Thank you racing members, and RC, who came out on the 10th and let us hope for a windy day for the next Jack Frost race event scheduled for February 21st. Well it might not be Mexico, but Cruise Captains Darrell and Nicki Powell-Ford would like to invite you to the Mardi Gras Cruise in taking place on the January 31st weekend. To appeal to all those fishermen in the club, our Power Boat Fleet Captain & Safety Officer Tony Shaffer is exploring the idea of a couple of fishing derbies this coming year, so dig out the tackle and the cooler for fishing adventures ahead Photo by Fred Fago In February, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Boater Safety Class will be held on the 28th, and a flyer is circulating (see EYC website) that denotes a $10 discount for EYC members who attend. For those sailors who like to go-it-alone, EYC will be sponsoring the Single Handed Sailing Society Safety at Sea class on March 1st. All the Best, REBECCA Some pics from New Year’s Eve: ENCINAL YACHT CLUB · 1251 PACIFIC MARINA · ALAMEDA · CA · 94501 · 510.522.3272 6 From The EYC Junior Sailing Director HANNAH TUSON-TURNER Hello EYC! Junior Sailing has had a very busy winter of regattas and events and as we gear up for another full swing season, I want to thank everyone who's put time in to help us keep all the gears turning smoothly. Thanks so much to all the coaches, parents and volunteers who've rallied to get our sailors and boats to events all over California in the last few months. As we gear up for this next season, we rely on your generosity and dedication to get our young sailors out on the water almost every weekend. So, thanks again to our sailing families and our extended EYC family as well! High School teams attended two events already in 2015, the Rose Bowl Regatta in Long Beach and the Little Daddy Regatta, NorCal #6 at the Richmond Yacht Club. Our sailors performed at a high level and exhibited excellent sportsmanship at both events. We are just beginning week day drop-in and weekend practices for this year's Winter and Spring High School season and our sailors are training with enthusiasm. I'm impressed with the level of racing that many of our sailors are performing at and everyone is setting exciting goals for the season and the New Year. EYC OPTI Race Team has also been active this winter. Most recently, four of our OPTI sailors attended a regatta at The SFYC where they experienced racing in close proximity with the big boat fleets on the City Front. A big thanks to Coach Cody Young who did a great job of helping keep everyone safe and having fun in a congested area! Both our seasoned veteran OPTI sailors and brand new green racers found the venue and conditions challenging and exciting. January is Junior Sailing Crab Feed time and this year our sailors did an excellent job serving and busing the event, serving over 220 people delicious crab and collecting $6000 in tips for our program! Thanks to the generosity of all the attendees, we'll be able to get a lot of much needed maintenance done on our fleets of coach and race boats. We are in the process of doing a complete overhaul on each of the Junior Sailing motor boats so that we'll be able to rely on them for years to come. I want to extend my gratitude to our winter storm committee, who has already worked several times, but most specifically Jay Hoffman, and sailors Miles Orozco, Drake Hayes, and Liam Orozco who came down during the very windy days over the holidays. Also, thank you to Darrell Powell Ford, who is helping us save money with connecting our internet and phone lines to the main club house.
