Charlie Kaupke, Auctioneer Texas License # 11746 Brandon won the Boys Cutting at the 2004 National High School Finals Rodeo with Smart Little Boogie. He then continued showing her in the Non-Pro. “They’re both real bright and cute on a cow,” Brandon said of Nievas and her dam. “Her momma and her both have the same way of trapping a cow. They have the same way of drawing a cow to them and not having to go run fast across the pen.” Brandon, 25, did his part to set Nievas up. “We got them [the cows] cut clean, too,” he said. “I always try to make sure I cut them as smooth as possible, so I can start my run out that way.” Brandon also credited his dad, whom he says is an expert at selecting cows, for his winning run. That’s not the only expertise Ed, an earner of more than $560,000 as a cutter, has offered his son. Nievas was a father/son project, with Brandon starting her as a 2-year-old, and Ed taking over the bulk of training when the mare was 3. The Dufurrena men have found a system that fits and through working together, Brandon has picked up many lessons from his father, the biggest of which is patience. “With this business, you can’t get in a hurry,” Brandon said. “It’s all about patience and controlling your temper. It’s a big deal because if the horse makes a wrong move, you want to get mad, but if you get mad, they don’t learn from it. You’ve got to teach them. That’s what they’re here for, to learn. If I don’t teach them, then I can’t expect them to be good down there [in the show pen].” Brandon’s patience has paid off, and the young horseman is on a roll. The Summer Spectacular win was his second major NCHA title this year. He also won April’s Super Stakes Classic/Challenge Limited Non-Pro title with 2005 mare Miss Ella Rey (Dual Rey x Huggs Olena x Smart Chic Olena), a mare Brandon has ridden to more than $92,000 in cutting earnings. The Limited Non-Pro Reserve Championship went to Filipe Rezende Barbosa and his mare Miss T Rachet (Cat T Masterson x Missys Rachet x Doc’s Hickory). They scored a 216 in the finals and won $7,776. Barbosa grew up on a ranch in Brazil and has made a splash in American cutting pens since moving to the U.S. two weeks before January’s Augusta Futurity in Augusta, Ga. Barbosa plans to stay in the United States for at least a year as he lives with fellow cutter Armando Costa Filho and trains with John Mitchell near Weatherford, Texas. The Senior Limited Non-Pro title, determined in the first round, went to Billy Collier, Waller, Texas, and Smooth Freckled Cat (Widows Freckles x Sheza Smart Cat x High Brow Cat). Collier, 61, and his gelding marked a 206 and won $1,980. —EH 64 Quarter Horse News ★ August 15, 2011 QHNMG_110815_PeckLarry_1117706.indd 1 QHNMG_110815_58_SummerSpectacular.indd 64 7/20/11 1:18:25 PM 7/27/11 10:45:45 AM
