Frank: Ironically you formed the group

ago. Since some of the personnel have
changed over the years, how long has
this particular lineup been intact?
Mo: This lineup has enjoyed eight
years together. Our initial keys player
moved out of province, creating a space
which has been expertly filled by our
current player; our lead guitar was also
replaced because the demands of work,
study and family didn’t allow for him to
continue. So the lineup changed following that first pavilion and has remained
constant ever since.
How many years in total have the Beetles been in action?
This past weekend marked our ninth
anniversary.
I hear you’ve added some stuff out of
their solo catalogues, I would imagine
to keep things fresh. How well do those
selections go over compared to all of
the Beatles stuff you do?
Songs like “Band on the Run” and
“Photograph” are really popular and
make for a great additions to our show.
We are a tribute to The Beatles. Although we do play a couple of individual
songs — a McCartney tune here or
there, maybe add a Harrison song — our
focus remains squarely on the collaboration that the four musicians achieved as
a band.
I recently saw some video of a McCartney tribute act that was quite impressive and the innovator in me thought,
why not take that even further? So
allow me to share this idea. Since you
guys do some of their solo numbers,
have you ever thought of performing
say a Lennon and McCartney set, followed by some Harrison and Ringo
numbers and then culminating it all on
the third set (or one might say third act)
with a full-on Beatles set containing the
best of their tunes that you do?
Another way to do it would be the first
set containing early Beatles hits, second
set could be the mid-’60s experimental
period and the third set could be the
White Album up to the rooftop gig?
Are there any other innovative ways
you’ve thought of presenting your
show or do you prefer more of a spontaneous thing when it comes to selecting songs?
We did, for a time, try just that. We set
aside our suits for a set and donned psychedelic attire. Honestly, we found our
audience preferred that we mix it up and
we returned to sets that were not defined
by those periods.
Some Beatles tribute acts go so far as
wearing the mop tops but you guys
stopped at the suits. Was it a conscious
decision to not go overboard with the
effects or is it just the fact that you
can’t get all of your hair to look like
Mo’s?
Haha! As musicians, we are more interested in musical excellence rather
than the “look.” And, of course, we all
have great hair!
Sorry, Mo — I couldn’t resist taking that
shot. I’ll make it up to you and let you
get a plug in for your solo album
you’ve been working on. Give our readers a glimpse of what that album might
be like?
I am so happy to be working on my
own material. Playing with The Beetles
is wonderful. We are all close friends, the
music is challenging and the audience
response is awesome. As an artist, it is
really fulfilling to me to be working on
another solo effort. I’m very pleased so
far; the music comes from the heart and
is, I think, powerful because it has been
“stripped down” and is true to my original intention. That is, I’m trying to capture the essence of the songs.
Between that and keeping active while
promoting the Beetles all the while running a hair salon, how on Earth do you
find the time?
I can’t deny that it’s rather busy. Honestly, every band member has a full, busy
life but our rehearsal time and gigging
time is such a pleasure — it doesn’t feel
like work.
What is your favourite Beatles tune to
perform live?
We have a few favourites. I think we
all especially enjoy “Penny Lane” and
“All You Need is Love.” My personal
favourite is “Let it Be,” and then you’ve
got “Drive My Car,” “Hey Jude” — it’s
pretty tough to choose a favourite.
Which songs really whip the crowd up
into a frenzy?
“Twist and Shout” always fills the
dance floor, as does “She Loves You,”
“Roll Over Beethoven” and “I Saw Her
Standing There.”
Are there any tunes that you’re working on that aren’t stage ready just yet?
We’re working on a few, but I’m especially excited to be rehearsing “Don’t Let
Me Down.”
No doubt it’s going to be another busy
year for you guys. Typically how many
shows do you like to fit into your already demanding schedules?
Despite our full schedules, we live to
play and as to how many gigs, the answer
is “as many as possible!”
To get the harmonies and changes as
well as all the other nuances down that
the Beatles were known for, you must
invest many hours in the rehearsal studio. How many hours a week do you rehearse?
When we aren’t gigging every week,
we try to commit four to five hours a
week to practise. We’re stoked for our
upcoming show at Sandhills Casino!

Winter TLC for plants

The days are beginning to
lengthen and the sun’s rays
appear stronger — the first
glimmer of hope for us that
winter might be on the
downswing.
We still have a fair bit of
winter left yet, however, and
this might be a good time to
take a couple of hours and
give your house plants a
thorough inspection and
grooming.
There is no doubt about it,
house plants suffer and often
go into decline during the
winter months due to several
factors. Low light levels
certainly contribute to their
not being as robust as they
should be, but our neglecting
them as we go about our busy
winter schedules, improper
watering, and undetected
insect or disease problems
might all contribute to our
plants looking less than their
best.
To perform a proper
grooming/cleaning/inspectio
n operation, choose a spot,
such as the kitchen table, and
spread an old plastic tablecloth
or other covering on the table
to contain the mess you will
create.
Then bring your plants, one
at a time, to this “examination
table.”
The first thing you want to
do is remove any dead, dying
or damaged leaves. Use sharp
scissors to cut these leaves off;
don’t pull on them as this
might damage another leaf or
pull another part of the plant
out of the soil with the dead
leaf.
Plants get brown tips on
their leaves for a variety of
reasons, including fertilizer
burn, lack of humidity, too
little water, or too much light.
As you examine each plant
that has this affliction, try to
determine what the likely
cause is so that you can alter
the care you give the plant to
correct the problem.
Cut the brown tips off on a
slant to mimic the curved edge
of the leaf so that the cuts are
less noticeable.
Next check for brown leaf
margins, which are usually
caused either by lack of
humidity or disease.
If a leaf is too far gone,
remove it; if it doesn’t have a
lot of browning along its edges,
you might trim the brown off
with sharp scissors, realizing
that eventually the rest of the
leaf will brown and have to be
removed. Again, make the cuts
appear natural looking by
following the curving edge of
the leaf with the scissors.
After all dead and diseased
foliage (remove any leaves
with yellow or black spots) has
been removed, check the soil.
Use a small hand tool or even
a kitchen fork and fluff up the
top of the soil, being careful
not to disturb any shallow
roots.
If there appears to be salt
built up on the soil surface,
remove this salty material
before the fluffing process. If
you have to remove some soil
to get all the accumulated
salts, replace it with fresh
soilless mix, and if you have
noticed fungus gnats flying
around inside your house, you
might like to dust the soil
surface of every plant with a
bit of insecticidal dust.
If you think the build up of
salts in a particular pot is
serious, you might want to
flush the soil by taking the pot
to the sink and letting water
run into the pot and out the
drainage holes, carrying the
salts with it. You will have to
let the pot drain in the sink for
a little while before you then
fluff (if that word can be used
when dealing with wet soil)
and dust the soil surface.
Finally, give each plant a
good cleaning. Use a soft
damp cloth to wipe large
leaves by holding each leaf flat
on one hand and wiping it
gently with the other — you
will be amazed at the amount
of dust that will come off.
Plants with smaller leaves
can be taken to the sink or
bathroom and given a shower
to remove dust from their
leaves. Give each plant a good
shake to remove some of the
water after its shower.
Be sure to let foliage dry
thoroughly. Put washed plants
in front of a fan to expedite
this process and be extra
careful to remove water
droplets from leaves that
might be marked if the water
droplets are allowed to dry in
place. Use a Kleenex or soft
absorbent cloth to remove the
droplets.

process, you will have kept
you eyes open for any sign of

insects and if you find any,
take appropriate action. When
I conduct this operation, I
always have my spray bottle of
insecticidal soap on hand.
At some point you will also
have removed each plant from
its jardinière. Empty any
stagnant water that has
collected in the jardinière and
give it a good washing. I often
spray a bit of aerosol
insecticide into the jardinière
before I return the plant to
deter insects, including fungus
gnats, from setting up shop.
After your plants have all
been returned to their display
locations — you may have
changed locations for some if
you found they were suffering
because of where they had
been located — you will
appreciate how much better
they look.
You can say to your plants
what my wife says to me after
I come indoors covered in dirt
and sweat from a day’s work
in the garden. After I shower
and don clean clothes, she

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner — a
time when we acknowledge special relationships and
the love in our lives.
One local animal rescue has used this special day
to help those in search of a special companion — in
this case, one of the four-legged variety!
This Saturday will mark Funds for Furry Friends’
fifth annual “Meet Your Match” event, being held
at the Shoppers Mall from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The rescue will bring out some of their adoptable
animals to introduce to the public, and will offer
those in attendance a chance to speak with the rescue
team about the animals.
This is not an adoption fair — animals are not
adopted at the mall. Instead, it’s a meet-and-greet
opportunity for those looking to find that special
someone to add to their family.
Those interested in pursuing adoption can contact
the rescue following the event to arrange a visit with
any of the dog(s) that capture their hearts — or to
inquire about any of the other adoptables that are
not in attendance.
Funds for Furry Friends is a completely volunteerrun animal rescue organization based in Brandon,
and operating in southwestern Manitoba. This
nationally registered charity has an average of 70
dogs and 40 cats looking for permanent homes.
The rescue is foster home based, and most of the
animals are cared for by loving foster families while
they wait for their perfect match.
If you have already found your perfect companion,
consider helping someone else find theirs. The rescue
is constantly seeking foster families to help care for
the animals.
The foster program is not meant as a means to
adoption — it is a network of volunteers who donate
their time to provide a safe and loving environment
for pets as they seek permanent homes.
If you are interested in learning more about the
program or want to ask some of the foster families
about the program first-hand, stop by the mall on
Saturday and ask a bit about our program.
There are a lot of really amazing animals out there
who are looking for that special someone to spend
their lives with.
Few companions are as loyal and devoted as our
canines. If that’s what you are looking for, come on
down to the mall on Valentine’s Day — who knows,
maybe you will meet YOUR match!

Fear is a natural and
necessary part of life. Without
fear, we would act without
thinking and potentially put
ourselves in dangerous
situations.
In the early years of life, a
child encounters many
unknowns, some of which can
be frightening. It is only
through
exposure
and
experience that she will learn
to overcome or manage her
fears, while respecting the safe
boundaries that healthy fear
can provide.
Although each child is
different, there are some
common fears in each stage of
childhood.
Infants and young toddlers
need the security of a loving
caregiver and a comfortable,
predictable
environment.
When a baby is separated from
his parent, even for a short
time, it can be very stressful.
He does not yet understand
that the parent will return, or
that he will be safe in an
unfamiliar place or with an
unfamiliar person.
You can help your baby
learn that when you go away
from her you will always
return. Playing peek-a-boo
shows her that you still exist,
even if she can’t see you.
Toddlers get this same message
when playing hide and seek.
When you need to leave
your child, whether for the day
or for only a short while,
always say good bye and let
him know that you will return.
If you try to slip away when
he is distracted, this will only
reinforce his fear that you
could disappear at any time.
Older preschoolers often
develop fears of the dark,
monsters or loud noises in the
night. Resist the urge to try to
minimize these fears, but
instead find ways to gradually
help your child overcome
them on her own.
Leave a night light on so
your child’s room is never
completely dark. Sit with your
child in her darkened room
and use a flashlight and make
shadow puppets to help her
become comfortable with the
shadows on the wall. Listen
for and explain the sounds that
she might hear in the night,
such as the furnace running, a
loud clock ticking, or tree
branches brushing against the
house in the wind.
School-age children’s fears
are often more rooted in reality
than in the unknown. Fear of
natural disasters or scary
events in the media can cause

anxiety for older children.
Talk with your child about
events that worry him. Help
him to see that while these are
real situations, they are not
common and not something
he is likely to experience.
Whatever your child’s age,
it is important to remember
that even if it may seem
insignificant, her fears are very
real to her. Don’t dismiss them
as silly or try to talk or shame
her out of being afraid. Listen,
offer support and encourage
her as she works through her
fears.

Last weekend, qualifying rounds
were held for Open Provincials,
which will be held over Easter
weekend in Winnipeg.
Representing Westman this year
are Nicole Sentner, Michelle
Brown, and Gisele Sayer competing
in ladies singles, with Garry Hamm,
Trevor Rae and Gus Scaletta
competing on the men’s side.
Nicole, Michelle, and Gisele will
be joined by Brenda Bradshaw and
Glenys Stanley to make up the
ladies team, while Jerry Sayer,
Ethan Buckman and Terry
Wikstrom will complete the men’s
team.
As for the always spirited mixed
team, it will be comprised of
Heather Arthurson, Susan Hansen,
Jason Scaletta, Aaron Humenny
and Steve Derksen.
