Shifting Gears: Your Club Wants You!

W
e have had a small taste of
winter weather -- nothing like
folks have experienced in
the Northeast or Midwest, but enough
that I had to cancel the March board
meeting. Even though we did not have
a board meeting, the committee chairpersons were still hard at work. We had
a Driver Education event in March at Eagles Canyon,
and plans were being finalized for Sunday/Saturday
drives, a Gimmick Rally, a Tech Session, more DEs, May
at Mayo’s, and various social events.
In February, I had the pleasure of attending the Zone
5 meeting for Region presidents. There were several officers from other Clubs in our zone. There are several
different events that the other Regions have coming up.
One of those events is a Show and Shine in San Antonio on the weekend of April 11-12. It is for Porsches
only, and the proceeds benefit the Warrior and Family Support Center of San Antonio. So if you are going
down that way that weekend, it could be a good event to
compete in, or just see some nice Porsches and Porsche
owners.
If you are not going to San Antonio that weekend but
want to put your car on a track, we have a very good DE
planned at MotorSport Ranch in April. We are going to
run the full 3.1 mile course. It was the first course I ran
a DE on and it was great.
We also have a Gimmick Rally scheduled for April 25.
Those types of rallies are loads of fun. And speaking of
fun, do plan on attending May at Mayo’s. It is a Show
and Shine with good food and of course good company
with your fellow Mavericks.
Now you know what is coming next. I am always encouraging you to get involved with YOUR club. I have
a specific area where we could use some help that does
not require a huge time commitment. Our Membership Chairs, Tom
and Susan Froehlich, could use some
help. You are probably thinking, he
is always saying how our club is growing -- why would we need help in
membership? Well, there are always
folks who join our club that need a
little personal contact to encourage
them to enjoy the club as much as
you do. So consider contacting the
Froehlichs at membership@mavpca.
org to find out how you can assist
them.

Mav of the Month
Speaking of membership, we have two
members, Jerry and Myra Sutton, who are celebrating
45 years of membership in PCA. Can you imagine that?
That is awesome! If you want to learn how to get the
most out of YOUR club, just do a little of what they have
done and continue to do. Jerry was Treasurer in 1976,
Secretary in 1986, and President in 1988. He and Myra
won the Selcer Award in 1986. In 1995 they won PCA
Family of the Year. They have participated in autocross
events through the years. Probably in the early years
with one of the 914s they own. Myra
and Jerry now compete in a Cayenne. They also have a long record
of participation in rallies. At Parade,
Myra volunteers in the Goodie Store,
Jerry is a Concours Judge, and they
both work registration. They often
attend Happy Hours and the monthly Maverick lunches at Spring Creek
BBQ in Richardson. So to celebrate
all they have done for our Region
and their 45 years, they are Mavericks of the Month for April.

Gareth still remembers the cover of
the car magazine that drew him into a
lifetime of loving cars. He spent many
afternoons riding his bike as a young
kid to the local newsstand to buy and
read everything he could. He now
owns a Midnight Blue 911S and enjoys
driving it in wonderful Texas!
Jim joined Maverick Region in August,

A
housekeeping note: due to a
website issue, there was no February Trivia posted on mav.pca.
org, so we don’t have Jerry DeFeo’s
Trivia column this month. Never fear
- it will be back in May!
Now, on to business. At the end of
2011, the Managing Editor of Slipstream, Richard Bradley, having held that post for the
previous three years, realized that he needed to devote
more time and attention to his business, and stepped
down from the position. This sent the Maverick Region
Board into search mode, looking for a new Editor.
Richard left big shoes to fill. Slipstream, under his leadership, had won three National Newsletter Awards: second place in class for 2009; first place in class for 2010;
and the overall award for 2011 – the newly-inaugurated
Betty Jo Turner Award for Newsletter Excellence. Richard’s experience with photography and layout made
him a great match for the position of Managing Editor.
But he needed to move on.
Unbeknownst to most Mavericks, I had been the Newsletter Editor for Hill Country Region (Austin area) back
in 1981-82. At that time, “cut and paste” was a physical
reality; you manually typed articles on a typewriter, then
cut out the text and pasted it down, along with photos
and ads, which were later photocopied and mailed to
the membership. Quite a difference from how it is done
these days.
I mentioned this to Richard, and asked if he would
show me what was involved in putting together a publication like Slipstream every month. We met a couple
of times, and he gave me an overview of how he did it
using the Macintosh laptop that the Region had purchased a few years earlier.
After some “encouragement” from a few people, including a huge offer from Linda Bambina to be my
“content wrangler,” i.e., chasing down folks to write
articles and submit content, I agreed to take on the job.
So after three years in the position, it’s my turn to
step down as Managing Editor. Quite fortunately, Jim
Hirsch, to whom I have already introduced you in a previous issue, is already coming up to speed as Slipstream’s
new Managing Editor. I will continue to help with content editing and fact checking, but Jim will be doing the
“heavy lifting.” So without further ado:

In Remembrance: Bob Benson
Sadly Bob Benson, the safety chair for our driving
programs for many years, passed away on Friday,
March 13 from health issues while performing his
duties at the track. Bob has dedicated his Porsche
Club career to ensuring the safety of our drivers, instructor/coaches and corner workers.
It was Bob who would inspect each track in the
spring and make required recommendations to
the tracks’ management for corrections before our
Porsche Club groups would participate at their location. It was Bob who was almost first to arrive at the
track on the day of (or day before) an event to ensure
that the track conditions, equipment and personnel
were all in place for a safe and successful event. And
it was Bob who would drive the track before anyone
else and report any hazards or abnormalities that
may exist.
So even if you didn’t regularly participate in the
Porsche Club driving events that were affected by
Bob’s work, you can appreciate how much he meant
to our club. Needless to say, Bob will be sorely missed.
As memorial and funeral details become available,
we will communicate them to you so that you can respond in a way in which you feel appropriate.

Gimme a Minute: March Board Non-Meeting

ue to the
inclement
weather
and
potentially
hazardous driving
conditions,
the
March board meeting was cancelled.
Instead, President
Jim Falgout requested that all board
members submit reports via email.
Following is a compilation of those
reports.
Membership Chair Tom Froehlich
reported that we have a total of 2,356
members (1,503 are primary). We
have several members with special
anniversaries this month: 40 years
for the Kaufmanns and 45 years for
the Suttons. Congratulations!
Slipstream Editors Carey Spreen
and Jim Hirsch said that the March
Slipstream got to the printer on time
and was delivered to GM Direct
(our mailing house) on Friday, Feb
27. Unfortunately, due to weather
delays, the post office appears to
have delivered them the first part of
March. Jim and Carey both received
their copies on Saturday, March 7,
so we hope that most other members have received their copies by
now, as well. Also, Jim is now in possession of the Slipstream MAC. Using
the Team Viewer application, Carey
is still able to connect to it over the
Internet, so both of them can work
on Slipstream (Carey remotely, Jim
locally) when necessary. Carey will
focus on editing/proofing content,
while Jim will do the actual magazine layout. The system seems to be
working well so far!
Jim Hirsch also reported that the
Maverick Twitter account is identified as “MaverickPCA,” so anyone
with a Twitter account can search
and “follow” us. It went live on February 20 and we currently have 15
followers. Reminders for all of our
club events plus general Porsche
news will be tweeted regularly.

Social Chair Tracy Robertson said
there was nothing new to report.
We are looking forward to the great
annual event, May at Mayo’s. As in
past years, we will have the People’s
Choice Concours followed by dinner. The Concours is free, but there
will be a charge per person for the
food and drinks. See our website for
more information.
Ad Chair Pat Friend reported that
there are several ad accounts that
need to be collected. As Goodie
Store chair, he said that we continue
to get badges orders frequently. It
would help if we could automate
that. Our webmaster is supposed
to be handling this but it’s moving
slowly. We have only four more Maverick Region grill badges left.
Rally Chair Don Sebert said the
April 25 rally will start at 10:00am
in the Bartonville area and finish
in Frisco at the Railroad/Historical
museum at approx. 1:00-2:00. We
will tour the museum, including the
rail cars and engines. The museum
and RR cars tour will take about one
and a half hours, or less if you don’t
want to walk the RR cars. Babe’s
Chicken Dinner House is next door,
for any members or guests who want
to eat after the event. We’ll have final details by the next meeting.
Sunday Drive Co-Chair Tom Martin
sent in that final preparations are
being conducted for the inaugural
Sunday Drive of the 2015 season on
March 22. A pre-drive for the group
leaders and sweeps is scheduled for
the Sunday before the drive. The
Garmin file for the drive route is
being published on the Maverick
website for people who wish to
download it into their GPS units.
Addressing the dining concern after
the drive, three suggested restaurants will be added to the Drivers’
Meeting handout. Drivers will be on
their own to rendezvous in groups
after the drive, if desired. The waivers and Drivers’ Meeting handouts

are being finalized for submission to
the printer after all RSVPs are in. He
and co-chair Neill Flood visited with
Mike Maberry of Rancho Sereno to
establish contact and initiate a dialogue about the May drive.

by saying they met with Mike to
tour the property and to discuss the
event with him. The trip was a success with a scenic location for fun
drive participants to sit down and
eat near a pond and a neat barn and
stables where we can view his show
horses. In addition, Mike indicated
they should have young colts for us
to view, as well. We also discussed
having BBQ catered from a local
restaurant and Mike was more than
willing to help us with the event.
Overall, we felt this is a nice destination and will proceed with event
planning.
DE Registrar Wendy Shoffit reports
that the March event had a pitiful
number of registrants. Whether it
was weather related or spring break
or too close to other events, it will
not be a good turnout. We’re hoping the April event will be better.
The COTA Club Race planning is
coming along well. It will be on May
10-12 in Austin. There will be two
Race Groups and two DE Groups
for advanced drivers. Spectators and
volunteers are welcome. Registration opens March 23 for both the
CR and DE.
The Feb Monthly Social (Happy
Hour) at the Hilton Garden Inn was
a success with great turnout. Over
82 Porsche Maverick attended, who
enjoyed 50% off drinks. We had the
whole Lobby venue and a dedicated
bartender! The next four Monthly
Socials are all booked with great
specials.
President Jim Falgout will present
a more lengthy report to the board,
but in short he attended the Zone 5
Meeting in Tulsa, OK on Saturday,
February 21. It was hosted by Zone 5
Representative Lynn Friedman. There were presidents
and other officers from several clubs as well as James
and Wendy Shoffit, Tom Gorsuch, PCA National Vice
President and RJ Wilmoth, PCA Historian/Archivist.
The first topic on the agenda was the recent expulsion
from PCA of Burt Propp at the recent winter meeting
of the PCA National Board of Directors meeting, which
has caused quite a stir. Tom Gorsuch was PCA National
Treasurer for the previous four years. He had direct
contact with Mr. Propp, and was a target of some of Mr.
Propp’s complaints, and as it turned out, threats. Mr.
Gorsuch reported to us on the activities that led up to
Mr. Propp’s expulsion, the actual action of expulsion,
and the current situation. Mr. Propp has filed an appeal, and the Executive Council is in the process of establishing an unbiased committee to review his appeal.
Apparently, while this is an infrequent occurrence, it is
not the first time there has been a member expelled
from PCA.
There were other reports made at the Zone 5 meeting:

encouraging clubs to enter the newsletter competition.
Lynn also discussed Porscheplatz which occurs in the
fall WEC race at COTA. There will be more about that

their daughter Jasmine was 10
months old. Wendy had convinced
James to buy the 911 of his dreams
(or the closest he could find to it)
when they found that their baby
seat wouldn’t fit in the
back seat of the Mitsubishi 3000GT they owned
at the time. When he
seemed shocked and
asked what he would do
once his dream of owning a Porsche (since he
was 9) became a reality, she replied, “Dream
about

Destination Restoration:
A Suspension Odyssey Part 5: Rotors and Bearings

nd we’re back! As promised this
month we are returning to my
epic suspension rebuild! For
part five of the series I have chosen to
write about cleaning and/or replacing
the rotors and bearings on my 1974
914.
First, you must determine if your rotor needs to be replaced, or if it is still reusable. When
the car is securely jacked up and the front wheel is off,
inspect the rotor by feeling its front surface. If you
notice any deep grooves or areas of significant pitting,
the rotor will need to be replaced, or at the very least
resurfaced. If you are unsure whether your rotor needs
replacement or if there is enough material to resurface,
take a micrometer and measure the rotor’s thickness. If
it is less than .395” (about 10mm) then it will certainly
need to be replaced (remember, this is on a 914 – your
rotor thickness will likely be different). If you have any
additional questions or concerns with determining the
thickness or condition of your specific rotor pull out

the old Haynes manual, search the internet forums, or
reach out to the club resources available to all members.
The next question you have to answer is this: what type
of rotors do you want to replace your old ones? Whether
you elect to buy stock, cross-drilled, or slotted rotors is
NOTE: It is important that you note the
orientation of the bearings as they came out of
the rotor, as you will need to know this proper
way in order to correctly replace them
really determined by how you want to use the car. If you
plan on competing in club races then it would be smart
to upgrade to the higher performance cross-drilled rotors. If you want to save on money or want the car to
remain stock, standard rotors are the way to go. Again,
doing your own research and utilizing the numerous
internet resources are the best ways to answer any performance questions you might have.
Once you have determined the route you are going to
take, the steps for replacement are very simple. First,
remove the two 19mm bolts that attach the brake caliper to the strut assembly, wrangle it off the rotor and
carefully hang it to the side with a coat hanger or zip tie.
Next, take a flat head screwdriver and pry off the dust
cap at the center of the rotor. Once the cap is off, use
the appropriate Allen wrench to loosen the small hex
bolt which clamps the hub nut to the hub spindle. Keep
the Allen wrench attached to the hex bolt and use its
leverage to turn and remove the hub nut. Next, gently
wiggle the rotor off of the spindle, being careful not
lose or drop the slotted washer or the outer bearing as
they clear the spindle.

Bring all components to your clean work station and
grab your new rotor, as well as some grease. Flip the old
rotor over and pry off the small black circular seal and
remove the inner bearing, inspecting it for damage or
scuffing.
When the inner bearing and seal are in position, you
can take the rotor back to the vehicle and place it on
the spindle. Reinstall the outer bearing and slotted
washer on the front of the rotor and screw on the hub
nut. You want to tighten the nut until it is fairly snug
but not too tight. To do this turn the nut to the point
that it is tight, then back it out about half a turn; the rotor should spin freely without any resistance or scraping
sounds. Lastly, tighten the hex bolt that clamps the hub
nut, replace the dust cap, brake caliper, and wheel. And
you’re done!
If you suspect any fault in the condition of your bearings, go ahead and purchase new ones; they are reasonably priced and readily available on various auto parts
websites. The next step is to clean the old grease off
the bearings and repack them with new grease. For this
step, many people prefer to buy a grease packing tool,
which gets the grease in the bearings quickly and efficiently, but the same results can be accomplished by
meticulously massaging the grease into each one of the

the new rotor. I say “liberally” because, as you might
have noticed from your old rotor, the inner bearing is
submerged in COPIOUS amounts of grease. When you
think you have enough grease, add another dollop for
good measure, then install the inner bearing and replace the black circular seal.
NOTE: If the old seal is no longer rigid or shows
signs of wear, it will also need to be replaced.
Next month we will finish out the suspension build
with a complete brake caliper rebuild.

First Porsche: It All Started with a Root Canal

ave you
ever
found
yourself doing impromptu isometrics in the dentist’s
chair? That was
my situation one
afternoon in the spring of 1974. My
dentist, a relatively young doctor
with extensive naval experience as
a staff dentist, was performing a
one-session root canal on one of my
molars when he mentioned that his
neighbor had a sports car for sale.
The doctor was quite familiar
with my motor racing activities
and my affinity for sports cars in
general. I had just returned from
a season of Formula Ford racing
in England, competing in the Jim
Russell Racing Driver’s School farm
system, and was driving around
in a slightly beat up MGB. When
I asked him what make of car his
neighbor was selling, he responded
“Porsche.” Not being a fan of the
marque at the time, I initially
expressed disinterest. But a week
later, I found myself inspecting
the car at the neighbor’s garage.
It was a 1953 Porsche America
Coupe, a stripped down 356
specifically tailored for the American market. It boasted corduroy
seats instead of leather; there
was no radio, wheel trim rings,
or passenger sun visor, and the
passenger seat did not recline.
The seller was a pleasant elderly
gentleman, seemingly from the
“Old Country,” as we used to call
it; most probably, I assumed, of
Prussian descent. The maroon
coachwork of the Porsche appeared to be straight and stout,

The engine compartment cradled
a 1488cc “Normal” powerplant,
which generated 55 brute Teutonic horsepower. With a dry
weight of only 1640 lbs., however,
the Porsche did have a little zip.
The key word here is “little.”
The condition of the interior was
quite nice for its age. Tan corduroy seats, and a stamped steel
dashboard shining in maroon
paint. Bakelite control knobs and
steering wheel completed the look.
The headliner was made from a
chenille fabric, and smelled like
what I imagined the inside of
Robert Mitchum’s fedora did in the
movie “Farewell, My Lovely.” Even
though the Porsche was a 1953
model, the interior looked, felt,
and smelled like a pre-war DeSoto.
After a short test drive, I bought
the car. For $1000. Yep . . . $1000.
And that was the most I had
ever paid for a car at the time.

but there was some slight surface
rust along the bottom perimeter
of the car, which he had sparingly
covered with powder blue house
paint, Old Country style. Back
then, one used what one had.
Upon purchasing the car, it
promptly stalled a block from the
seller’s house. I lifted the engine
lid, completely bewildered by
the flat four Volkswagen-based
engine staring at me. Having
worked solely on British inline
fours and American V-8s up to
that time, I was at a total loss.
To add insult to injury, a man walking with his child on the adjacent
sidewalk approached the Porsche,

unreliable. It was time for a brand
new car; one that was reliable, but
still fulfilled my sporting desire.
I holed up in my apartment for a
weekend and absorbed and digested every bit of data I could find
about the current crop of sports
cars. In the end, I came up with a
shortlist. Keep in mind, this was
1976, and my budget was limited.
I narrowed my choices down to:
and said “Oh look, son. It’s an old
Karmann Ghia.” I was mortified.
Over the next several months, I
tried to “become one with the car,”
as I had done with my MGB, while
carving through the undulating
backroads of Connecticut. It just
wasn’t happening. It was the most
evil handling car I had ever driven.
It rode on skinny 5”x16” tires, and
because of its rear engine layout,
the Porsche was virtually a rolling
pendulum, ready to snap sideways
at the slightest provocation, such as
actually daring to the turn the steering wheel in any direction. At least
the slides were controllable; you
could hang the tail out as far as you
wanted, then countersteer when
you reached the angle you wanted.
But as far as the fabled Porsche
mystique . . . I just wasn’t getting it.
So, the MGB remained my daily
driver, and the Porsche was relegated to weekend driver, when
it was safe to traverse the roads

Reality set in two years later, when
I landed a job with real responsibility. I was to directly manage
12 people, and as their leader,
it was imperative that I be present, without fail, every day. Both
the MGB and the Porsche were

Autocross Series: Event 1, Lone Star Park, Feb 22

n spite of the forecasted terrible cold, heavy rain, sleet
and ice forecast for the first
event of the 2015 AX series, 88
brave souls registered. By event
time Sunday morning, 73 drivers
cleared tech inspection and were
ready to make the most of the day.
The Equipe Rapide/PCA organizers decided to make
efforts to beat the sleet by running 3 heats, with each
driver getting 6 runs on another well-designed course
in the Lone Star Park main parking lot. The course
combined elevation changes, rolling hills, multi-radius
turns, and a long slalom run. Make no mistake, it was
cold and windy, and got very wet. Although the usual
first-event-of-the-season delays did occur, we were finished just after 2:30 pm.
Only the first few drivers in Heat 1 got an almost-dry
track, so their first efforts had to be perfect to take advantage of the changing conditions. Classes
were grouped to do the best at keeping conditions similar by class. Results, of course,
were all over the place.

been in there Sunday . . . (Thank you again David!)
We were looking forward to see how John and Gary
Leto were going to handle the weather in their full race
914. They stayed home. Probably another good choice,
but I am sure we will see them next time.
Post-event awards and even Performance Index prize
money payouts were handled inside the lobby of the
track so everyone could get out of the rain. (Note: there
are nice heated/AC restrooms in there also!)

us made it to grid. Matthew Cords brought
his Cayman S; Erik Holt, his 993. They both
handled the water well. Carey and Geneva
Spreen brought the 911SC. Carey toughed
it out all day. Geneva finally had enough of
the conditions and ended the day after a few
runs. Smart Girl! Sigrid and I brought the
now totally water logged 914. It ran fine for
Sigrid. I got just one very foggy windshield
run in before enough water finally dumped
through the engine screen and ended our

Autocross Highlight: An Interview with Sigrid Schnoerr

Schnoerr, to talk about what she enjoys about the sport.
Wes Lincoln: How long have you been
involved in Autocross?
Sigrid Schnoerr: I have been involved
in Autocross since I moved to the
United States from Germany in 2002.
I landed in Boston on a Friday, and
(husband) Mark took me to the PCA
Zone One Championship Autocross
event in Connecticut that weekend. He was so afraid I
would break the 914 by just driving it there. I had always
driven cars with manual transmissions, but that dogleg
first gear, and just missing reverse on the way to second,
sometimes fakes me out.
WL: What is it about Autocross that keeps you coming
back, year after year?
SS: I love the competition and like learning a new
course at every event because it’s never exactly the same.
Getting to walk it and then figuring out how to get the
most out of the car to be quick teaches focus, skill, and
determination. There is nothing like the feeling you get
when a quick run comes together. It is never perfect,
but making fewer mistakes leaves the least amount of
time out there.
WL: You have a very eye-catching car. Did you choose
the color scheme?
SS: Mark was so excited to buy back his old 914 in 2001
you would not believe it. When I first saw it in a storage
garage I thought it was just awful and the color was too
dated. I wanted him to have it painted black. After we
cleaned it all up, rebuilt the motor and transmission,
and took it to a few PCA Autocross events, I fell in love
with the color and now I would never change it, ever,
especially after I dressed it so nice with the black race
stripes.

WL: You have competed at several different places in
the DFW area. Which one is your favorite?
SS: Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie. Lots of elevation
and camber changes, big enough to put a nice course
down, pretty clean surface, with grass and trees to set up
chairs and watch, and real bathrooms nearby.
WL: What words of encouragement can you give to
someone who has thought about competing in Autocross?
SS: It’s a fun and safe, extremely exciting sport where
you can enjoy driving your car to the limits and learn
about yourself and your capabilities. In most modern
Porsches, a single shift to second gear is all that is
needed at an autocross. You are not risking your car,
insurance, warranty or the extended wear on tires and
brakes. It’s a sport where husband, wife, daughter and
son can meet a lot of nice people and make new friends.
WL: Off the course I have favorite places where I like
to drive. Do you have a favorite place where you have
driven a car?
SS: On the Autobahn in Germany, lapping the Nürburgring, and Sebring in Florida. And, of course, any
autocross course in my 914.
WL: What would you like to accomplish in Autocross
this year?
SS: Become a better driver than last season, win Top
Female Driver and my class again. And most of all, have
fun.
WL: Sigrid, thank you for taking the time to speak with
me. It is obvious that you have a passion for Porsches
and driving them as they were intended. I wish you the
best of luck this year.
WL: Can you list the class championships you have
won?
SS: Yeah, I won quite a few. But, the real joy of Autocross is the people I meet, the competition, and feeling
I get when a good run comes together.
WL: You are consistently leading your class in Autocross. What are three things that make you so successful?
SS: 1. Determination. 2. I want to be faster than Mark,
even though he is not in my class. 3. I want to have fun
