The scheme aims to encourage full time
Primary School children to walk to and from
school by offering an incentive in the form of
leisure vouchers.

It is hoped that by doing this car journeys to
schools will be reduced and the environment
around the school gate improved.
The scheme works in a similar way to many
high street ‘loyalty cards’.
Each WEDNESDAY that you walk to school you
will be issued with a stamp on your card.

Every WEDNESDAY you walk to school
you will be rewarded with a stamp
(Maximum of one stamp per day)

Once your section is complete you
decide wether to claim a reward
or carry on saving.
Hand in at School to validate it
If you live too far to walk to
school there are a number of
designated parking areas that
can be used so that you still
obtain your walking star.
We hope that you enjoy
participating in this scheme and that
it has a beneficial effect on your
school’s environment and your
health.
If you have any further
comments about how
sustainable travel to school
can be promoted, please
contact your Headteacher in
the first instance.

SCHEME
WORKS
The challenge will run over
three terms. All cards will be
kept on school premises until
they are complete.
PLEASE NOTE:
Once the reward card is taken
home, the responsibility for
its safekeeping is yours; no
replacements will be issued
and also spoiled or damaged
cards will be deemed void.

WALKING THE HEALTHY OPTION
Taking part in regular physical activity, such as walking, is an important part of a
healthy lifestyle. Regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of children
developing a range of health problems in later life including obesity, heart
disease, diabetes and cancer.
Wakefield Council recommends 1hr physical activity per day for kids 5-18 and
30mins per day for adults.
Children and young people should undertake a range of different
activities to meet these recommended physical levels. For example
dancing, swimming or skateboarding. Walking to and from school has
been identified as an excellent way for children to meet the
recommended activity levels as it enables them to
make physical activity part of their daily routine.
It is not just children and young people who benefit
from walking to school; the Department of Health also
recommends adults undertake at least 30 minutes
physical activity on at least five days of the week. So
by talking part in the scheme Walking Bus, volunteers
are also helping to improve their own health.
