It lies in the central part of Europe and within a 120 to 200-kilometre radius there are several European capitals: Prague, Vienna and Bratislava. Brno International Airport is served by scheduled flights. The city can be proud of its numerous landmarks, which are proof of its rich (800-year) history. The historical centre of Brno is a listed urban preservation area. The city became prominent in European history during the Thirty Years' War, as it was the only town in Central Europe able to defend itself against siege by the Swedish army. Subsequently it underwent rapid economic development and during the 18th and 19th centuries it dominated the textile and engineering industries. Functionalist architecture contributed to giving the city its appearance as a modern metropolis. The most significant architectural landmarks include the Brno Exhibition Centre, founded in 1928, and the famous Villa Tugendhat, built in 1930, which is featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today, Brno is a university town, home to the country’s highest legal bodies as well as other important institutions. It is a centre of business and trade, culture, sport, science, research and innovation. The city is surrounded by beautiful mixed forests offering numerous hiking and biking possibilities. The city hosts annual cultural events and festivals (e.g. "Brno – City in the Centre of Europe" featuring a firework festival known as Ignis Brunensis) as well as significant sporting events (motorbike Grand Prix). Modern shopping and entertainment centres can also be found here.
