ARTER hosts a group exhibition entitled “Spaceliner” between 15 May and 2
August 2015.
Curated by Barbara Heinrich, “Spaceliner” attempts to examine the stylistic
vocabulary of contemporary drawing and presents artists whose works explore the
relationship between drawing and space. “Spaceliner” illustrates working methods
and approaches of contemporary drawing production through the works of Peter
Anders, Sandra Boeschenstein, Pip Culbert, İnci Eviner, Monika Grzymala, Nic
Hess, Gözde İlkin, Harry Kramer, Pauline Kraneis, Hans Peter Kuhn, Zilla
Leutenegger, Pia Linz, Christiane Löhr, Ulrike Mohr, Jong Oh, Nadja
Schöllhammer and Heike Weber.
As the concept of drawing expanded in the 1960s, drawing itself proliferated to other
genres and media, and developed wide-ranging dialogues with installation art and
sculpture, video, film and photography as well as with environmental art. In this
regard, “Spaceliner” attempts to grasp the epistemological qualities that define the
medium of drawing as well as its interpretation in other media.
All of the works presented in “Spaceliner” stem from a mode of thinking rooted in
drawing, which differentiates the artistic outcomes from spatial installations in general.
This approach manifests itself in the choice of materials and their use. Above all, it is
revealed in the works’ graphic intensity and how lines are used within the space. The
aspect of motion is integral to the works’ conception, leading to discourse on the
tension
between
spatial
image
and
actual
experience
in
space.
The
architectural/physical structure of the exhibition space at ARTER becomes the
boundaries of the images produced. Therefore, lines that define the walls, the floors
and the windows echo in the works and vice versa. The diversity of the materials and
the range of the techniques used in the production of the works in “Spaceliner”
underline the multi-faceted quality of drawing production.
