was won by Pat Walsh,
who took home $251,700.
Second place went to Ali

The event was filmed

also awarded $40,000 for
winning the initial table
and moving on to the final
table, and each player had
a $10,000 bounty awarded
for delivering a knockout
blow. A bonus of $20,000
went

ONYX-spected Tour Developments,
and Live at the Bike
POKER NEWS
By Haley Hintze
FULL TILT ANNOUNCES ONYX CUP
Looking for a small series of ultra-high buy-in tournaments? If so, then Full Tilt’s planned new venture into live tournament
play may be just for you. The online giant recently announced its ONYX
Cup series, with six planned stops in the US, Europe, and Asia. Buy-ins will
run from $100,000 to $300,000 per seat and the series hopes to siphon
many of poker’s biggest names from other tours, with the planned events
bumping up against various EPT, WSOPE, and new Federated Poker League
stops. ONYX kicks off with a May 11 and 12 tournament in Las Vegas.
THE BIG EVENT AND OTHER EVENTS “LIVE AT
THE BIKE”
When Victor Ramdin took down top honors in the Bike’s recent Big Event,
it was two stories wrapped into one. One was Ramdin’s victory over Joe
Hachem, good for a $500,000 payday that was reported last issue in
Poker Player Newspaper. The other was the fact that The Bicycle Casino
has more than 400 episodes of poker—accompanied by expert live commentary and 17 cameras to capture the action— designed to advance any
player’s skill level.
With the Bicycle Casino continuing to stream “Live at the Bike” on
a regular basis, all you need do is navigate to their web site, check the
schedule, watch some of poker’s best players go at it, and raise your
game in the process.
MOON SIGNS WITH HPT
The regional Heartland Poker Tour, centered in the Midwest and featuring $5,000 event buy-ins, made its first venture into player endorsements a notable one when they signed former WSOP runner-up Darvin
Moon to represent its brand. It’s a big change for Moon, too, who turned
down numerous sponsorship offers as the chip leader during the 2009
WSOP “November Nine” hiatus, but who in the last year or so has
become a regular at HPT stops.
NEVADA CONSIDERING INTRASTATE ONLINE
POKER, TOO
In the absence of a federal regulatory framework, American states’
collective push toward regulating within-state online poker marches
on. Nevada is the latest state to see legislation introduced proposing
the creation of an intrastate network along with an associated regulatory framework. In a bit of a surprise, WSOP brand owner Caesars
Entertainment quickly came out against the proposed Nevada measure,
citing a desire for national and international online poker networks
instead of single-state solutions.
PLAYER’S LIFE SAVED BY CPR-TRAINED CARD
DEALER
Too often it’s tragedies that make the news (see the next brief), but
here’s a good-news tale. An anonymous player who collapsed at the
small Raynham Park poker room was rescued by dealer Steve Parigian’s
CPR until paramedics arrived. Officials credit Parigian with saving the
man’s life, and the tale comes with its own kicker—it was Parigian’s first
day on the job. This was a fortunate and timely coincidence, but it’s not
too much to consider that all poker rooms—large or small—should have
one CPR-trained dealer or floor person on hand at all times. CPR training
isn’t very expensive, and poker players aren’t always known for their
healthy-lifestyle ways.
CASINO TOUR BUS ACCIDENT CLAIMS 15 LIVES
Fifteen people lost their lives on March 12 when an excursion bus returning from Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Casino to Manhattan veered out of
control, smashing into a sign pole which sheared the bus and wounded
or killed most of those inside. Investigations into the tragedy are ongoing, though some reports suggest the bus’s driver, who survived the
crash, may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
SAHARA TO SHUTTER DOORS IN MAY
Here’s another remnant of Las Vegas’ early days, soon to be transformed into rubble and memories. The Sahara—which always evokes
memories of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and the rest of the Rat pack—
announced it will close in May. The news is of little real impact to poker
players. The casino’s poker room remains open, but it has not been a hot
location for poker action in many a year.

Caro’s Word: “Tips”
I
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
couldn’t quite figure
out what the topic for
today’s self-interview
should be. I thought
about comparing the features of photo editing software and about my worst
restaurant experiences.
Those would probably be
difficult to tie into poker in
meaningful ways.
So, I thought and I
thought. And then something brilliant blasted my
brain. How about tips!
Sometimes I explain poker
concepts in great detail.
And sometimes I just provide the essence of profitable poker advice, otherwise known as tips. Let’s
do that. First question,
please…
Question 1: What is
your first poker tip for
today?
I love the way you
phrased that question.
It makes my job easier.
Here’s my first tip, from
my Poker1.com archives…
What’s the weakest hold
’em hand you can have
and still end up on the
river with an absolute certainty of victory? A small
straight, an ace-high flush,
what? Think about it.
The answer is three
queens. As an example,
if you hold Qa-Qs and
the board is Qd-Jd-7f4f-2a, you can’t be
beat. There’s no straight or
flush possible. And there’s
no rank higher than your
queens showing that would
allow someone to hold a
superior three-of-a-kind.
Anything lower than
three queens never has
a guarantee of victory.
That’s because there will
always be some bigger
hand possible: Bigger
three-of-a-kind, a straight,
or four of a kind. And
remember, your three
queens must include two
in your private hand. If
two are on the board and
one is held privately, any
opposing pair matching
the board will form a full
house and beat you.
When you’re sure you
have the absolute best
hand after seeing the river,
we say you have a “lock.”
Three queens is the weakest possible hold ’em hand
that can ever be a lock.
Question 2: What’s
your second poker tip for
today?
Another great question!
Let’s try this…
I teach that you should
be very selective about
the hands you play. But
once you commit to a pot,
you should bet and raise
aggressively, taking advantage of small edges.
Fine. But you should
sometimes abandon your
aggressive play when

Gov. Christie Is Shocked, Shocked Get Schooled by Mike “the Mouth” Matusow and Michael
“the Grinder” Mizrachi, Awake to a Beautiful View of the
At Internet Gambling Bill
POKer AND THE LAW
By I. NELSON ROSE
New Jersey’s Governor Chris Christie wants to be
President of the United States.
You can tell, because he is constantly traveling all over the U.S.,
holding press conferences to say that he does not want to run.
That’s how it is done in the U.S.
But Christie’s problem is that he is a Republican, which today means
the only way he can be nominated is to win over the extreme conservatives of the “tea party.”
Conservatives say their first priority is small government.
But Christie is smart enough to know that voters who will pick the
next GOP presidential nominee have higher priorities. While there are
some fiscal conservatives, most Republicans are still social conservatives. The right is still the religious right, even if that means big government, such as intruding on decisions about abortion, gay marriage, etc.
At least one-third of social conservatives oppose all gambling,
although they accept it if it has been approved by local voters.
And Christie is from a “blue” state, and will already be pictured by
his Republican opponents as the governor of Atlantic City.
So, when faced with a bill to allow casinos to have intra-state
Internet gambling, does he sign it into law, and help balance his state’s
budget, or veto it, to prevent being known as the Internet gambling
governor?
I thought he would let online gaming become law without his signature, and then blame it on the Democrat-controlled State Legislature.
But, after thinking about it for two months, he was shocked to find
the bill violated the State Constitution.
The reasons Governor Chris Christie gave for vetoing the intrastate
Internet gaming bill were not completely frivolous, although they
weren’t his real motivations.
He said that the bill violated the State Constitution, because it
would permit casino gambling to take place outside of Atlantic City.
There is a legal basis for this. When the voters approved amending the
Constitution to bring in casinos, they expressly limited them to Atlantic
City.
But what about the Legislature’s prior approval of betting on horse
races from homes and offices? State Senator Ray Lesniak’s Internet
gaming bill had simply adopted the same language used with Advance
Deposit Wagering on races: Once a patron sets up an account, all
wagers are deemed to take place at the racetrack, or, in this case, at
the casino.
The Constitution does not expressly limit betting on races to tracks,
the way it does casino gambling. In fact, it gives the Legislature the
right to do just about anything it wants with wagering on live or simulcast horse races.
Christie was also not completely off-base in saying that there was
nothing in the proposed bill that “would prohibit commercial establishments outside of Atlantic City, such as nightclubs, cafés and bars from
offering Internet gambling.” True, but all Internet gaming had to be tied
to an existing Atlantic City casino. And what casino would have allowed
a competitor to be set up within the physically small geographic area of
New Jersey?
No, the real reason Christie vetoed the bill, and the reason it took
him so long to discover these legal problems, is that he was weighing
what to do politically. He wants to run for President, although he is
probably smart enough not to try and take on Obama in 2012, especially
with such a short track record as Governor.
But, by saying the bill violated the Constitution, Christie forces proponents to put the issue on the ballot in November.
Now, when he runs for Vice President or President, the state will
have gotten all the money that Internet gambling will bring in. The fact
that it meant being the first state to introduce casino gambling into the
home will not have been his fault.
He can blame the voters.

final table, but his stay was
short. He was all-in with
K-Q to Mike Matusow’s
K-J, but a jack on the turn
gave the pot to Matusow
and eliminated Sexton.
After Sternberg lost most
of his chips to Rajkumar, he
went on a rush and at one
point had more chips than
all of the remaining players
at the table combined.
Steven Kelly began closing in on Sternberg when
he eliminated Rajkumar
in fourth place. Matusow
was then the short stack
and shoved all-in with 9-2.
Sternberg called with K-Q,
flopped a pair of queens to
quiet the Mouth, and he and
Kelly were heads up, and
virtually even in chips.
After chipping away at
Kelly to leave him short
stacked, Kelly pushed allin with As-Qc. Sternberg
called with Ts-8s. The
flop of Qd-8h-7h was good
for Kelly and the 7s on
the turn helped him even
more. Kelly was one card
away from doubling up,
but Sternberg caught one
of his two outs, the 8c on
the river, to record his first
WPT victory.

Later in the day, current

A flush on the river eliminated Duhamel, who took

When Ali Eslami pushed

THE BICYCLE CASINO
I’ve been playing poker for
a looooooong time. Years
ago, not living close to legal,
public poker venues, I was
a member of a dedicated
group that played in a Friday
of games that participants
are playing simultaneously.
Who would have thought
to play multiple tables back
in the early days? Today,

night home game which lasted for decades. I also was
one of the adventurous few
that made the initial leap
into on-line poker at a time
when some of my friends
thought I was crazy to put
money up on an internet site.
I recall playing on Planet
Poker when the games were
very, very different than
today. One major difference,
aside from sheer number and
ability of the players, was
the chat feature.
Back in the early days of
online poker, players would
usually play on only one
table at a time and actually
chat with each other. It had
more of a feel of a home
game as players would
ask each other questions
about the weather in their
area of the country and a
host of other topics. There
was always the nh, vnh, ty
and the use of emoticons
at the completion of most
hands. The chat feature has
changed dramatically over
the years in terms of the
amount, civility, or lack
thereof, and use of English
from the early days.
The significant reduction in the amount of chat, I
believe, is due to the number
ers play an
enormous
number of tables at the same
time. There is no time to
be wasted chatting about
the weather or saying “nice
hand” for these busy players.
Many players have come
to realize that small edges
can lead to significant profit
through increased volume,
while minimizing risk at
the same time. If one of
you volume moguls is reading this don’t sneer when I
admit that multi-tabling to
me means two, maybe three
games at the same time! I
know that is nothing in comparison to the current young
guns of internet poker.
While the amount of chat
has plummeted, so has the
civility of what remains.
Players aren’t asking about
weather but chanting epithets such as, “You f***in
donkey.”
Wow, quite a shift, don’t
you agree? There was
always some vile, aggressive behavior in the chat box
but it seems like lately they
either have nothing to say or
something foul. The times
I’ve seen this type of behavior in live games, I could

cyberspace.
Another phenomenon
which I’ve seen grow is the
increased use of languages
other than English. Every
internet site I’ve played
on has an “English only”
rule, just as in live games,
to help thwart collusion. In
fact, I’ve seen languages
typed into the chat box with
symbols my keyboard does

change is in direct correlation to the rapid growth of
poker’s popularity worldwide. It should be every
player’s responsibility to
report offenders of this rule
to site management, but I
don’t think many do.

Erik Seidel: The
Highest High Roller
Caro’s Word: “Tips”
ONLINE POKER
you’re losing. That’s
because other players
unconsciously feel they
can beat you. They then
become inspired and play
better. This little understood concept means that
your normal value bets
and raises will suddenly be
unprofitable! One of the
great secrets to poker strategy is that you can play
much more aggressively
when your opponents are
intimidated by you than
when they’re not.
Question 3: What’s
your third poker tip for
today?
That’s an excellent and
probing question. I hadn’t
really expected it. Let’s
see…
Paul “Dr. Pauly” McGuire
Like many newcomers to the world of professional poker, I was
introduced to Erik Seidel during the summer of 1998 through a
Hollywood film. I was living in Seattle, WA back then. I played in
a regular home game every Monday night at the Trout House,
where members from an acid-jazz band named Kilgore Trout
lived and had transformed their basement into a rehearsal space
and recording studio. They allowed my friends to play cards in
the kitchen as long as we brought our own beer and smokes. We
played low-stakes wild card games and could hear the band jamming down below us. When practice ended, a few band members
would join the game that ran ordinarily ran until sunrise.
Kilgore Trout’s guitar player suggested that I needed to see
a film called “Rounders”—a poker movie about underground
games in my hometown of New York City. Later that week, I
caught “Rounders” at the Neptune Theatre. At the time, the
only famous poker players I had heard of were Doyle Brunson
and Amarillo Slim, so I was completely clueless when Mike McD’s
character referenced the 1988 WSOP main event final table featuring Johnny Chan and Erik Seidel. But by the time the movie
ended, I walked out of the theatre knowing that Johnny Chan
was a bad ass and that Erik Seidel got smoked.
Despite Seidel’s setback at the 1988 main event, his poker
career took off after his runner-up performance against Chan.
Since 1989, Chan earned more money than Seidel only three
times in a single calendar year (1991, 2000, and 2005). At the
present moment, with almost $14 million on career earnings,
Seidel is currently in second place on Hendon Mob’s all-time
money list. He’s ahead of Phil Ivey (third place) and trails money-list leader Daniel Negreanu by less than $180,000.
In the first two months of 2011alone, Seidel amassed almost
$3.6 million in tournament earnings. In an auspicious start to
the year, he dominated “high roller” tournaments with buy-ins
in excess of $25,000. He final tabled four, including victories in
two events.
Seidel caught fire while playing the international circuit during a two week stretch in January. He flew down to the Bahamas
to play in the $25,000 High Rollers event at the PokerStars
Caribbean Adventure. He finished in fourth place for $295,960
payday.
Seidel hopped on a plane and flew to the other side of the
world for the Aussie Millions, hosted at the Crown Casino in
Melbourne, Australia. He played in the AUD $100,000 high roller
event and finished in third place collecting $625,000 or approximately $618,000 USD.
Five days later, he played in the most expensive buy-in tournament in the history of poker—an AUD $250,000 buy-in super
high roller event. The event attracted 20 runners with a prize
pool worth $5 million. Seidel shipped that event after beating
British pro Sam Trickett heads-up for the victory. Seidel earned
AUD$2.5 million or roughly $2.47 million USD.
Seidel’s run good continued when he returned to the United
States. His next stop was the Commerce Casino to play in the
L.A. Poker Classic’s $25,000 high roller event. Even though
Seidel negotiated a three-way chop with French pro Bertrand
“ElkY” Grospellier and online pro Darren Elias, he still pulled
out a victory with some money and the coveted title left on the
table.
On the last day of February, Seidel earned almost $145,000
during a quick trip to L.A. to cap off a remarkable run.
In a seven-week span, Erik Seidel won a pair of high roller
events, earned almost $3.6 million, and racked up a plethora of
frequent flier miles in the process.
When asked to explain his recent performance, Seidel humbly
answered: “It’s just a freaky streak, one of those once in a lifetime things.”

In poker, the time to
hesitate is when you really
need more time to resolve
a close decision. Often
things will occur to you
given a little extra time.
Or, under the extra pressure, your opponent may
provide you with a tell.
You might occasionally
also hesitate for deception,
so that alert opponents
can’t determine that your
pause always means you
have a close decision.
Also, sometimes when
you make a final bet with
a big hand, you’ll be more
likely to be called if you
don’t bet too quickly. So
don’t bet instantly when
bluffing. Remember that
both a bet delayed for a
few extra seconds and an
unreasonably quick one
are apt to make your opponents suspicious and are
more likely to be called.
But, unless there’s a
specific reason to hesitate, you should usually
make all your bets, calls,
and raises crisply and
confidently—because this
enhances your image and
speeds up the game.
Question 4: What’s
your fourth poker tip for
today?
Your question is right
on target again! I hope this
answers it…
Anytime you feel “glued
to your seat,” get up and
take a walk.
Players often find themselves so absorbed in the
excitement of the poker

Trapped At Turning Stone in
2 Feet of Snow, Yesssssssss!
Fast Answers About
Anything POKER!
pokerplayernewspaper.com
BY Barbara Rogers
Turning Stone’s March Madness
Tournament had plenty to offer, including a full field of 335 players, paying out $167,500. The man in charge,
Jason DiBenedetto, said, “March
Madness turned out to be a great
event for us with 300 players in Friday’s $300
event and 335 players in Saturday’s $500 event. We
appreciate all of the players who made their way out
to Turning Stone for the March series and we look
forward to seeing everyone again in May for our
East Coast Poker Championships.”
The poker room was jammed to capacity and it
stayed like that all night long; maybe a couple of
feet of snow clogging the roads had something to
do with it. Every time someone tried to leave, they
turned back because most of the roads were closed.
It was a poker players dream!
For once, at least, calling off work and calling home
to say you couldn’t leave was not a lie, and folks
played all night long. It never stopped, with drawings for money and seats in May’s up-coming East
Coast Poker Championship. I won a $360 seat for
the May 20 $100,000 guarantee tournament, and
you can play against me because 250 free seats will
be given away. Early room reservations at the poker
room rate can be made by calling 800.386.5366.
Camaraderie abounded, and so did fatigue—a direct
result of the all-day, all-night games. One player
proudly threw pocket kings up, exclaiming what a
good lay-down he was making in a pot exceeding
$500. Another king was on the table, along with a
pair of sevens. In his fatigued state, he folded a full
house to a jack high. He didn’t see the paired sevens
and thought his opponent had a flush. It’s a mistake
that’s easy to make after 48 hours of non-stop play.

I won the High Heels Tournament. In addition to the
cash, I received a trophy and a charm. I am thinking
about using the trophy, as a card protector. It’s a bit
heavy though, but it looks great.
At one of my tables, a gentleman, Joe Tyneki was
anxious about his wife Gwen driving through the
storm to reach him. He stepped away from the table
every ten minutes encouraging her to drive slowly.
We could hear everything, even though he continually updated us. “She just missed the exit; she is in
a white out,” he said. “She just saw seven accidents.
A truck just ran her off the road and she can’t see a
foot in front of her!”
“How far is she now?” we asked repeatedly. This
lasted almost two hours and when finally she
arrived, and they embraced, the entire table broke
into thunderous applause.
The dealers managed to keep their spirits high even
though they logged some seriously long hours.
Everyone had fun, and cabin fever never occurred. I
think many were secretly happy for the winter holiday that kept us playing poker. I am looking forward
to the East Coast Championship in May. Too bad it’s
not going to snow.

Caesars AC Circuit
Brian Ali ended up as the
undisputed king of the boardwalk battle, and collected a
$139,284 cash prize for first
place by delivering a relentless flurry of knockout blows
to his opponents en route
to his first World Series of
Poker circuit title victory.
Floating like a butterfly
and stinging like a bee, Ali
demolished all challengers in
the quickest final day of the
entire WSOP circuit season
for any main event—officially clocking in at a lightningfast 3 hours and 55 minutes.
“This is so exciting for me
to win this,” Ali stated in a
post-tournament interview. “I
was just thinking about this
last night that I could win
the same amount of money
buying a lottery ticket or
something like that. But it
would not mean the same at
all. This victory is something
I really had to earn. I had to
beat some really, really tough
poker players, not just here
but over the past three days.
So, I’m flying high right
now.”
The $1,500 buy-in nolimit hold’em tournament
attracted 442 entries, surpassing even the most optimistic
of projections in what is one
of the gaming industry’s
most challenged markets.

“Poker players should
not be forced to lose

David Webb,
founder of
Grrrinders.
David Webb “Tiger Woods
doesn’t pay to hit golf balls
each time he practices; he

work on his game for free.
Our mission is to provide
the serious recreational
players, social players, and
those who wish to play

a chance to work on their
game with the allure of
also winning meaningful

Grinding has always
been affiliated with poker,

use the term “grrr” as a
sign of anguish. The website became “Grrrinders”
by combining these often
used terms.

Royal Expectations
STRAIGHT SKINNY
By RICHARD G. BURKE
The Station Casinos with poker rooms in
metropolitan Las Vegas offer a bonus of
$250 for any hold’em player who makes a
royal flush with both hole cards playing. We
thought you might like to see the details, so we didn’t hurry
through any steps in the following computations.
We have only four royal flushes possible; three of the
five royal cards must lie among the five community cards;
the other two come from the 47 remaining cards. The probability obtains from 4*C(5,3)*C(47,2)/C(52,5) which after
factoring common terms reduces to
5 4 47 46
5*4*3*2*1
4* * * * *
,
2
2
52*51*50*49*48
which equals 0.016637 rounded to six places, about 59-to-1
against. So, about one deal in sixty, the dealer places three
royal cards on the table.
You might think that we made a mistake by examining
the community cards first. We didn’t, because once she cuts
and squares the deck, barring dealer error, the cards’ order
doesn’t change. Just imagine that we peeked at the community cards before the dealer tabled them.
In order that anyone at the table have the other two
royal cards in the hole, obviously they must lie among the
deck’s top twenty cards. (The Stations’ poker rooms have
ten-player tables.) We compute that probability from the
quotient, C(45,18)/C(47,20), which after factoring reduces
to (20*19)/(47*46), which equals 0.175763, about 5-to-1
against.
Now here comes the tricky part. Math-challenged people
have trouble understanding the way to compute the probability that both royal cards lie in the same hand. See if this
makes sense to you: the first player gets any one of the top
20 cards so we have 19 choices for his second card; similarly, the second player gets any one of the remaining 18
cards so we have 17 choices for his second card; we iterate
for the other eight players. The number of ways to arrange
20 cards among ten players if we don’t care which player
holds which two cards equals 19*17*15*13*11*9*7*5*3*1. In
math shorthand we denote that product as 19!!
Because of the cards’ random order, the fact that the
dealer doesn’t actually deal the cards two-at-a-time doesn’t
affect the logic.
If any one player has the two key cards, then we have 17!!
ways to arrange the other eighteen cards among the other
nine players. So, the probability that anyone has the two
key cards equals 17!!/19!!, which equals 1/19.
We multiply the probabilities to find that the probability
that anyone of ten has a royal:
5 4 47 46
5*4*3*2*1
20*19 1
4* * * * *
=0.00015391,
2
2
52*51*50*49*48 * 47*46 * 19
about 6,500-to-1 against.
The Stations’ expectation equals that fraction times
$(250.00), which equals $(0.038). So, to offer its high hand
bonus for royals it costs the Stations less than 4¢ per deal.
You may find it interesting that you have exactly a ten
times better chance of holding a royal at hold’em with two
royal cards in your hand than at five card stud. Looking
closely at the equation, we reduce and rearrange it thus:
5*4*3*2*1
100 * 4 *
.
52*51*50*49*48
The probability of dealing a royal in five cards equals the
above except for the factor of 100. Because we figured the
probability for a ten-player table, we divide by ten to find
the probability of a particular player (you) having a royal
and discover it ten times more likely that the dealer blesses
you alone with a royal at hold’em than at Caribbean stud.

Poker Player
FISHING AROUND
By Jan Fisher
The stage was set and it was electronic flashes, smiles whiter
than snow, and as many notables as at the Oscars—it was the
World Poker Tour Celebrity/Charity Invitational! I was invited to
play in this prestigious event along with 481 other contestants,
comprising a who’s who of Hollywood’s most bankable stars
and the poker world’s most famous players.
Choosing what to wear for this event was difficult, though
it turned out that anything would have been appropriate.
The entrants were divided between semi-formal attire and
jeans. Prior to the tournament, the Commerce Casino hosted
a grand gala with cocktails and scrumptious hors d’oeuvres.
The long list of Hollywood celebrities and poker-playing celebs
were greeted on the red carpet by a bevy of television cameras, interviews, and fanfare. Mike Sexton, Vince Van Patten,
Kimberly Lansing, and the Royal Flush Girls were on hand to
represent the World Poker Tour talent.
Day one play officially began with the “shuffle up and deal”
announcement by Michael Buffer, the professional boxing and
wrestling ring announcer.
A charity component of the event allowed for an optional
$200 add-on for $5,000 in chips with all of the rebuy money
going to Chrysalis (www.changelives.org/), a nonprofit dedicated to creating a pathway to self-sufficiency for homeless and
low-income individuals by providing the resources and support
needed to find and retain employment. With nearly 100 percent
compliance on the rebuys, the WPT added in a few thousand
dollars to bring the total money raised to an even $100,000.
On day one, I had an enjoyable, but tough, table that included Antonio Esfandiari, Shawn Sheikhan, and Shannon Elizabeth.
I couldn’t figure out why all of the photographers wanted to
take my photo, and then
I realized that I was sitting on Elizabeth’s right
and they actually were
focusing their lenses on
her!
Late in Day One I
moved to a seat between
Don Cheadle and Jerry
Buss. Jennifer Tilly and
Yours Truly with Shannon Elizabeth Frank Mariani were at
Photo by BJ Nemeth, courtesy of WPT
the table too. Sitting
next to Cheadle was distracting and I found myself concentrating more on him than the cards! It was after 2 a.m. before I
was bagging my chips for the next day—exhausted and exhilarated to have made it that far.
I was 49 of the 115 remaining players in the star-studded
event, having dodged bullets and land mines along the way. I
found myself seated to Lauren Kling’s right at the beginning
of Day Two, so once again, the cameras were snapping relentlessly. I was happy with my play and made it down to about 30
players. Unfortunately, only the final six got paid and made the
TV table. I couldn’t help but wish that it was a normal event
that paid at least 10 percent of the field. On my last hand, I
aggressively pushed all in on the flop and was instacalled by
poker pro Mike “Ice Cream” Halioua’s pocket aces. So much
for my perfectly timed stop-and-go play!
The tournament and event were well-run by Matt Savage
and his staff. The structure is to be commended. Los Angeles
truly is the poker capital of the world. If everyone had as much
fun as I did, they’ll break even more records next year! Movin’
on...

Harrahs Rincon WSOP Circuit Event
winning his third career
WSOP circuit gold ring
to move within a victory
of two players who share
the all-time Circuit lead in
wins with four each: Mark
“Pegasus” Smith and Men
“the Master” Nguyen.
Masek is a 26-year-old
law student enrolled in his
third year of law school at
the University of San Diego.
Incredibly, each of Masek’s
tournament victories took
place while he was in the
midst of his legal studies.
“My first win took place
two years ago here in San
Diego,” Masek said. “It was
during spring break when
I won my first ring here at
Harrah’s Rincon. Then, last
year on my spring break,
I won my second ring in
Atlantic City. It’s pretty
amazing that on spring
break this year, I ended up
with my third gold ring.”
Masek topped a big field
totaling 391 players earning
$22,794 for first place.
The second event was
a $555 buy-in No-Limit
Hold’em tournament which
attracted 149 and was won
by Justin “Choctaaaaw”
Kruger, from Dennison, TX
who earned $17,505 in what
is his first WSOP-related
victory.
The third event was a
$345 buy-in Omaha/8 tournament won by Matthew
Ardo, from San Diego, a
24-year-old engineer. This
was Ardo’s first time to cash
in a WSOP tournament.
Our coverage of Harrah’s
Rincon will be split over
this and the next issue.
The finale, the $10,000
buy-in Western Regional
Championship will be covered next issue and televised
on the Versus Network.

Tournament Poker
for Newbies
BY Shari Geller
I’ve been writing about poker for three
years now and fascinated with the game
for too many years to mention. But aside
from family home games in the breakfast
nook, and the occasional microscopically low limit games
at casinos, I’ve been hesitant to try my hand in the big
leagues.
I’d leave the tournaments to my husband and sit off
in a corner, working on the New York Times puzzle and
cheering him from afar. Perhaps, I was taking the role
women often take around poker—curious, interested, but
reluctant to actually sit down with the boys.
All that changed late last year when I was in town to
cover the final table of the WSOP. I decided to plop down
the entry fee to the Aria 7 p.m. deep stack tournament.
For $125 you get 8,000 chips, with thirty minute levels
that increase at a leisurely rate. I was the only woman at
my table, though not the only woman in the tournament.
As I looked around, it was a fair cross section of the
poker world. In fact, one of ultimate main event champ
Jonathan Duhamel’s entourage was seated next to me. It
turned out not to be the scary, intimidating experience I
feared. I’d read enough books, watched enough poker on
TV, and discussed enough strategy. I could do this.
The actual tournament itself was a blur. I did not cash,
nor did I go out in any spectacular fashion. I played okay,
not great, though not embarrassingly bad. But I gained
confidence that tournament poker was not for someone
else, it could also be for me. Now, I should digress for a
moment to discuss the Aria poker room.
If ever there was a place to get your feet wet, this is it.
Keeping the analogy going, they have life guards at each
side of the pool, they put floaties on you, and the water’s
only about two feet deep. In other words, it’s an ideal
tournament for the uninitiated. The dealers are friendly
and don’t bark at you for missing your ante or blinds,
something both new players and those who usually play
on the internet are known for. The floor staff makes you
feel right at home and keeps everything humming effortlessly and without the smile ever leaving their faces. And
they don’t get mad at you for spilling your drink on the
felt. I won’t say how I know this, just trust me.
Having a good, if financially unproductive, introduction
to tournament play, I came back earlier this year to try
again. I signed up for the 1 p.m. tournament. As I went
deeper into the event, my nerves took over. Suddenly, I
couldn’t count or do simple multiplication and trying to
figure how what to do with blinds in the 12,000-24,000
range baffled me. I was near the bottom when we were
down to two tables and stayed there as we made the final
table. But I relied on patience—a new virtue I just discovered—and well timed aggression to start to chip up.
One by one my tablemates hit the rail. I actually tried
to agree to a split when we were ten-handed, since I
assumed I was the next one out anyway and likely to
bubble, but a few of the guys wanted to play it down.
Even with no bracelet, and not that much money at stake,
they wanted that victory. So, in my best Jerry Yang style,
I hung in there, watching my stack rise and those who
didn’t want to split go out ahead of me, riding the karma
train to Loserville.
Finally, I was heads up and within a half dozen hands, it
was over. I went from newbie to winner, the poker room
manager looking almost as happy as I felt. You should
understand, now, why I will always have a soft spot for
the Aria. You never forget your first

game, that they stop thinking objectively. I teach
students that the best way
to cure this is to simply
get up from the table when
they feel it’s difficult to
do so.
Question 5: What’s
your final poker tip for
today?
This is best interview
I’ve had in years! You
seem to be truly focusing
on what’s important. Since
this is the final tip today,
I’ll choose this…
One of the most widely
discussed strategies by
professional poker players is called “shifting
gears.” As an example of
shifting gears, you might
change suddenly from very

aggressive, loose play to
very defensive, conservative play. The theory is
that you put opponents
off balance, because you
always make the adjustment before they recognize
and try to adjust to it.
While I agree that shifting gears can be important,
you need to do it for a specific purpose. Remember
that if opponents aren’t
observant or don’t react
incorrectly—by calling too
much when you shift to
tight gear or by folding too
much when you suddenly
shift to loose gear—then
you’re wasting your time
shifting gears. In particular, it’s usually a mistake
to shift gears in loose,
small-limit games where
opponents treat poker like
bingo and make decisions
more on the strength of
their own cards than on
how they perceive you.
If your poker opponents
don’t adjust unwisely to
your gear shifts, don’t
shift.

UB Scandal
POKER TOURNAMENTS
Online Poker Perspective
BY Jennifer Newell
Did you miss it? Did you find yourself reading
this column and wondering when the UB scandal would resurface? No matter your answer, the UB scandal is
back in the news, and it appears far from settled.
Travis Makar was investigated by Wicked Chops Poker, and a
2010 exposé revealed Makar to be linked to the UB scandal. His
mother was married to Charles “Woody” Moore, a friend of Russ
Hamilton. She, along with Makar and his wife, were linked to
super-user accounts. Makar was said to have sold the Hamiltons
their Las Vegas home in 2006, and owned a computer company
that could have been a front for funneling money. Hamilton was
said to have called Makar the mastermind of the scandal, and
Barry Greenstein claimed Makar was Hamilton’s “assistant” and
“right-hand man.” Again, much of this revolves around allegations.
Makar recently surfaced. He contacted Bryan Micon and Todd
Witteles at DonkDown and revealed several interesting tidbits.
He claimed that UB Poker released select information and withheld more, including names heretofore unreleased. He noted
that though he and Hamilton are no longer close and prohibited from speaking because of a current lawsuit, Hamilton was
blamed whereas others involved in the cheating scandal walked
away. He also claimed to have missing hand histories in his possession—all of which are part of a federal case in which Makar is
currently involved.
Micon then met with Makar and viewed documents that
included raw UB files, which ultimately led Micon to conclude
that Makar possesses the “holy grail” of evidence in the UB
scandal. He also claimed some of the hand histories sent to
scandal victims were doctored, that four people knowingly used
the cheating program, and UB’s COO Paul Leggett allegedly was
in contact with Zoltan “Brainwashdodo” Rossa, a former UB
employee who is implicated in the scandal, regarding extortion
payments.
Leggett addressed the charge in a blog post on UB Poker, saying that no offer was made to pay off Rossa, despite the latter’s
blackmail attempts. Rossa claimed to have confidential company
information, including financial records and player data, and
after Leggett unsuccessfully attempted to enlist the help of law
enforcement in the case, he considered meeting with Rossa but
thought better of it.
Leggett wrote that the extortion attempt failed, and denied
that any hand histories were doctored, though he admitted that
some evidence may have been deleted prior to his employment
with UB. He added, “We have always hoped that someone like
Travis Makar would come forward one day and release information regarding whom else, in addition to Russ, was involved in
the cheating. We very much want this to happen.”
This is a condensed version of a very complicated story with
numerous allegations, some corroborated and others challenged.
For instance, Makar claimed that Leggett made an offer to Rossa
to keep quiet, but when Rossa insisted on a higher number than
$80,000, Leggett backed away. Leggett denied that an offer was
ever made. So, in essence, much of the story relies on information that has been withheld, possibly because of a legal matter,
and little in the way of solid evidence has been produced at this
time. Allegations make up the bulk of the latest revelations, and
only time and the production of evidence will clear the air.
Right now any number of people are likely in touch with
their lawyers, and though law enforcement may refuse to get
involved, the legal system may turn out to be the binoculars that
the poker community has been seeking for several years. Stay
tuned.
