MRS J MACKENZIE Activity Number 1 AERIAL EXTREME & CURLING Activity Details In the morning you need to be up for a challenge and be prepared to climb like a mountaineer and fly like an eagle!! Aerial Extreme at Ice Sheffield is an action packed urban high ropes course designed to bring big thrill action adventure to the inner-city. It's compact, but fully loaded with 34 challenging obstacles. Aerial Extreme is situated behind Ice Sheffield and just up the road from Meadowhall. In the afternoon if you fancy being the next Olympic medallist like Eve Muirhead or Dave Murdoch and trying your hand at curling at Ice Sheffield then this is the opportunity for you! You will have a go at sliding the stones across the ice and sweeping your team to victory by getting your stone closest to the centre of the house. You will make your own way there and back. Packed lunch and warm clothes. Cost: £21.00 Max 36 places Lead Teachers: Mr Griffiths, Mr Mallaband & Miss Diskin Activity Number 2 ARCHERY Activity Details Fancy trying archery? Or had a go before and want to hone your skills? We will teach you how to use a bow properly, first barebow and then with a sight. Add in competitions, balloons and foam animals and you’ve got a day to remember. All equipment will be provided. Necessary: sensible clothing and the ability to listen to and follow instructions No experience necessary. This activity is held on the school field. Answer A fabulously relaxing day of pampering in Learning Support! Come and learn how to make the most of yourself and be prepared to dazzle!! Bring your own lunch. Included in the price is: All skin treatments - including face packs, make up, nail treatment including varnish, foot spa treatment, hair accessories including bands, etc and for that extra bit of pampering — snack fruits and drinks. Cost: £12.50 Max 24 places Lead Teacher: Mrs Millar Activity Number 4 A BRITISH DAY OUT Activity Details Fancy a day of crafts, cake and a lunch time treat? Well this trip is for you. We will leave school at 9.00am and catch the bus to Ecclesall Road. We will then go to the Botanical Gardens where we will have a short walk and do some crafts outside. Following this we will have Lunch at Fancie and take part in a cupcake making workshop. At the end of the day you will be free to return home with the cakes you have decorated! Cost: £12.50 (price includes lunch) Max 20 places Lead Teachers: Mrs Featherstone & Mrs Heggs Activity Number 5 CRIMINALS & CAVES Activity Details Come and explore the sinister and grim stories of Nottingham's outlaws, and judge for yourself in an actual courtroom whether the town's most devious really deserved their gruesome punishments. In the morning we will be exploring the spine-chilling artefacts at the Galleries of Justice Museum, the most haunted building in the UK! After lunch we will walk over to the 'City of Caves' where you will be taken on a journey under the cobbles of some of Nottingham’s most famous streets and up through Drury Hill, which was the main street where the poorest residents of Nottingham once lived in Nottingham’s smelliest slums. The cost for this visit is £22.50, and will include mini bus travel and entry to both museums. Cost: £22.50 Max 14 places Lead Teachers: Miss Baker Activity Number 6 CYCLING IN THE DERWENT VALLEY Activity Details YOU MUST BE ABLE TO RIDE A BIKE TO DO THIS ONE! You’ll be cycling approximately 6 - 10 miles around Ladybower, Derwent and Howden out in the beautiful Peak District. Bikes will be hired for you, and travel will be in the school minibus. We will be cycling as a team and there will be lots of breaks for snacks. The tour will be lead by Mr Gono and he has done this for the past three years and is enjoyed by all who attend! Cost: £14.00 Max 14 places Lead Teachers: Mr Gono & Mr Davies Activity Number 7 DAY OF DANCE Activity Details Take part in a fun day of dance, try your hand at four totally different dance styles all in one day. You will have a taster session in ballet, cheerleading, jazz and cultural dance over the course of the day. Cost: NO CHARGE Max 20 places Lead Teacher: Ms Haslam Activity Number 8 DAY OUT TO LOVELY LIVERPOOL Activity Details Getting into Liverpool for around 10:30am, we shall have a stroll down through the vibrant city of Liverpool towards the Liverpool Albert Docks. En route, we shall see and discuss some of the most interesting historical facts about the city and its buildings such as the Liver Buildings, Saint George’s Hall and the Liverpool Town Hall. Upon arrival at the Docks, we shall explore both the new Liverpool Museum and the Liverpool Tate Gallery. After lunch, we shall make our way to the newly developed Liverpool 1 shopping complex. You will have a little bit of free time to have a look around some of the stores as well as enjoy some of the amazing viewpoints of around the city. We will be aiming to get back into Sheffield for around 5:30pm. Do you want to find out what it is like to go backstage and take a tour around the whole cinema including the projection room where the film is played? Do you want to test your movie knowledge against other teams to win prizes? Need I say more, this is the one for YOU! Cost: £8.00 Max 24 places Lead Teachers: Ms Ho & Miss Davison Activity Number 10 FOOTBALL FOCUS Activity Details Don’t choose this unless you love the game and will be glued to the World Cup! During the day you’ll be practising your skills-analysis of the game, tactics both on and off the field and personal fitness. We’ve got a host of skilled coaches for you to work with in preparation for our very own World Cup knockout. Cost: £3.00 Max 36 places Lead Teachers: Mr Pace & Mr Joy Activity Number 11 FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE Activity Details Come and join us and learn how to speak Russian and read and write using the Russian alphabet-it's nothing like English and more like a secret code! Learn fascinating facts about Russian life, sport and culture. We'll also be making Russian blini (pancakes русские блины) with a variety of toppings and other Russian delicacies. Open to absolute beginners and those who have played before. We will be travelling to Renishaw Golf Club together where you will be coached by the Golf Development Officer, Mr Bennehan & Miss Shacklock. All equipment is provided. You will need to take a packed lunch. The ultimate sci-fi action adventure for all ages. Traditional golf etiquette has no place here so leave your plus fours and rules at the door. Set amidst a tropical paradise, this is golf as you've never seen it before. Do you feel like you already are one?? Do you envy the superpowers of others?? Then come along to Superhero Day with Mrs Williamson! You’ll spend the day playing games, designing your very own Superhero (or baddie!), writing a short, inspiring script for your Superhero or a comic adventure. We might even act out a scene and film it… The best Superhero/baddie and script will win awesome prizes! We’ll also watch a Superhero movie, or 2 with a few nibbles. Dear Parent/Carer There are a lot of choices to look at - please help your child to make sensible choices. As there are 720 pupils to allocate to these activities I cannot change their choices. I will do my best to make sure they are with someone they know - this could be their nominated friend or someone from their tutor group or house, but I am sure you appreciate how difficult it will be to make sure all 720 are going to be happy! We have a lot of new experiences on offer so it is important they are aware of what could be involved - your help in this is much appreciated. It is most important that you tell us about any medical issues your child might have, and include as many emergency contact details as you can. If your child is involved with an activity involving swimming you will have to complete a more detailed permission form for the Local Education Authority. Please note that all off site activities are covered by the Local Education Authority Policy, if you would like to know what that covers please contact the Finance Office at school. You will receive confirmation as to which activity your child is participating in together with specific details about travel arrangements where relevant. BFI Mediatheque—films and TV programmes from the BFI National Archive. Kodak Gallery—the history of popular photography Cost: £16.50 Max 49 places Lead Teachers: Mrs Wright & Mr Hughes Activity Number 18 NUCLEAR PHYSICS DAY Activity Details Would you like to learn about the world of tiny particles? This is the day for you! In this activity we will look at what the universe is made up of, what the Large Hadron Collider is for and introduce some of the theories that underpin Physics & Chemistry. If you are a fan of the Big Bang Theory and want to know more about Physics, this is the day for you. We’ll also be watching videos, making posters and model making. This activity is held in school. Cost: NO CHARGE Max 28 places Lead Teachers: Mrs James Activity Number 19 OUTDOOR CHALLENGE Activity Details If you want a laugh and don’t mind getting wet and quite possibly muddy then spend the day with us. We’ll be setting you challenges, introduce you to the fine sport of weaselling and doing a spot of stream paddling. We’ll be going out into Derbyshire, having a picnic, eating ice cream. You will spend the day designing, painting and firing your own individual pot at the Planet Pot Café. A whole day to learn how to draw and then paint your own image and end up with a painting of yourself on canvas. Hang it on your bedroom wall or give it to your Nan. Learn to capture your own likeness. Cost: £5.50 Max 14 places Lead Teachers: Ms Kalmar Activity Number 22 SKATING & BOWLING Activity Details By the end of this activity you will have learnt how to skate, practised your new skills and have had two games of bowling. We will be spending the morning skating and then off to Hollywood Bowl to play a game or two of ten pin bowling. Location: Ice Sheffield and Hollywood Bowl Cost: £11.50 Max 36 places Lead Teachers: Mr Lockwood Activity Number 23 SNOW FUN Activity Details Play in the snow at the fantastic ―Chill Factor-e‖ in Manchester. The programme will be to travel by minibus to the superb indoor venue where you will get ready for two hours of snow fun on the fantastic indoor snow slope. Snow fun includes: Tubing - ride the bumps of the Tubing lanes in huge rubber rings. Dare you ask to be spun around as you whizz down the slope? Snow & Ice Luge – Going for gold as you scream down the twists and turns of the slide built entirely from snow. Crazy Sledging - there's three to choose from. Race each other on the sledges; build your speed with the nippy zipper or try dodging and weaving with the carver. Essentials: You must have suitable clothing (warm) including gloves for the snow park. We anticipate a departure no earlier than 8.15am and would hope to return by 3pm. Cost: £22.00 Max 15 places Lead Teachers: Ms Tiffin Activity Number 24 SQUASH & TENNIS Activity Details This activity is open for all from absolute beginners to those of you with some experience. You will learn the basics of squash and tennis with coaches. You’ll play some games and meet a Guinness Book of Records holder for the longest game of squash ever. You may also meet The World’s leading squash player – Nick Matthews – an ex High Storrs pupil. Location: Hallamshire Squash and Tennis Club Lunch arrangements: Packed lunches and drinks. Special Requirements: Non-marking trainers with PE kit. Students make their own way to the club and home at the end of the day. Cost: £11.50 Max 24 places Lead Teachers: Mr Akram Activity Number 25 STAN LEE FOR THE DAY Activity Details With great power comes great responsibility... When writer editor Stan Lee worked with writer artist Steve Ditko, Spiderman was the result – arguably one of the greatest comic book creations of them all! This activity will involve analysing some of the greatest comic book creations ever conceived and then using that knowledge to draw / create original heroes (and villains) and write a believable back-story, explaining how their superpowers were acquired and what would be done with them... The day should be practical, interesting and will feature numerous film clips and examples of comic books. Cost: NO CHARGE Max 20 places Lead Teachers: Mr Simm Activity Number 26 TASTE OF ROWING Activity Details Ever watched the Oxford and Cambridge boat race, or seen GB rowers bring home Gold at the Olympics, and wondered if you’ve got what it takes? Rowing is an exciting and demanding sport and this day will give you a taste of the fun as well as high quality tuition from experienced coaches from City of Sheffield Rowing Club. To participate in this session pupils MUST be able to swim at least 100m in light clothes. The day will be split into three sessions: an introduction to rowing technique and two sessions in the racing boats on water with experienced rowers! Students will need to wear their PE kit, will need plenty of drinks, a packed lunch and snacks, a spare change of clothes, waterproofs and sun cream. Students will get the most from this day if they are fit, energetic and enthusiastic! No previous experience is necessary. Location: Dam Flask Reservoir, minibus is provided. Cost: £12.00 Max 10 places Lead Teachers: Mr Wells Activity Number 27 THEATRE OF DREAMS Activity Details You don’t have to be a fan of Manchester United to enjoy this day out. Come and have a tour of the famous Old Trafford ground, visit their museum of trophies – far too many to mention! You'll also be visiting the National Museum of Football where there is chance for you to practise some of your skills and learn about the beautiful game! Cost: £15.00 Max 49 places Lead Teachers: Mr J Hogan Activity Number 28 TRASH TO TREASURE Activity Details Are you creative? Do you like to play? If so come and join us for a fun day of craft activities. Recycling is the aim of the game! – that way we can keep the cost down and do our bit for the environment at the same time. We will make a variety of things including Fridge magnets, Jewellery and decorated cans and tiles. There is a minimal charge of £2 which will cover all the resources you will need as well as drinks. The activity will take place in Learning Support and we will look forward to seeing you there. Cost: £2.00 Max 20 places Lead Teachers: Ms Lee & Miss Manson Activity Number 29 TREASURE TRAIL Activity Details You’ll be out of school enjoying our local surroundings, solving clues to find the treasure. Of course you must like ice cream and chip butties (please bring your spending money for these) for this activity because we definitely have to break our walk by visiting cafes on the way! We’ll also be finding the local alpacas and other wildlife as we go on our trip into the countryside. Cost: No Charge Max 24 places Lead Teachers: Mrs Dobson & Miss Johnson Activity Number 30 TWYCROSS ZOO Activity Details Do you fancy yourself as the next David Attenborough or Mikaela Strachan? Why not come with us to meet the animals at Twycross Zoo. The zoo is home to a range of animals including elephants, gorillas, snow leopards and sea lions. Twycross specialises in primates and so you can expect to see a lot of your biological relations and how biologists are trying to conserve them. You will be able to wander around the zoo with your friends or on your own, so you choose what you see. You will know where a teacher is at all times should you need help. You will not be allowed to touch the animals, but you can challenge your artistic skills and photograph (or draw) them as much as you like. The trip will last all day and you will need a packed lunch or money to buy food. The coach trip is about 1 ½ hours each way. Students tell us they have a fantastic time on this trip and some have been more than once so it must be good!! So go on write the zoo down as one of your choices and we will see you there. Cost: £16.50 Max 49 places Lead Teachers: Mrs Fletcher, Mrs Stevenson, Mr Kettle & Mrs Richards-Garnar Activity Number 31 WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Activity Details Fire-lighting, den-building, game-playing, wood-chopping, branch-sawing, bread-making, cooking, hot chocolate drinking... Spend a day doing all this and more in Whiteley Woods. Prepare to get muddy and have lots of outdoor fun. Cost: £15.00 Max 24 places Lead Teachers: Mrs Fisher, Mr Hutchinson & Mr S Wells Activity Number 32 WILDLIFE PHOTO FUN Activity Details Do you enjoy photography? Would you enjoy a day out learning new skills and having the opportunity to take some really great photographs of animals in their natural environment? Do you fancy getting hands on with an iguana? A kangaroo? Or even a meerkat? If so, then this could be the trip for you. All you need is a keen eye and a digital camera. We will make our way via minibus to Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster where we will explore the grounds and encounter as many different types of animals, birds and insects that we can. We will take every opportunity to capture these animals and look at ways of maximising light conditions, perfecting composition and maximising the most of the many effects your camera will have. We will meet in school at 9.00am and travel by minibus, we will return to school by 4.00pm. You will need a packed lunch and a camera (camera phones not suitable) of your own. Cost: £18.00 Max 14 places Lead Teachers: Miss Fellows, Mr C Perkins & Ms H White Activity Number 33 YORK DUNGEONS Activity Details Are you prepared to be a little bit scared? We will meet at Sheffield Train Station and arrive in York around 10am. Walking into the city we will stop for brunch (bring this with you!) We will then take a tour into the gruesome past of York. Inside the Dungeon you will meet some of York’s most horrible villains (Dick Turpin, Guy Fawkes, Eric Bloodaxe and The Torturer to name a few!) Following your experience in the Dungeon we will take a walk around the historic city guided by actors from the Dungeon recounting tales of the streets of York. We will then stop for a late lunch (bring this too) and a little free time before heading home.
