anEKTA mein 2015 Annual Magazine 2015 Established in 2002, IIK is a non-profit organization with over 4700 members. The organization mainly includes Indians living in Korea and Koreans who are interested in India or Indian community. This group primarily composed of engineering professionals, business persons, research fellows, students and housewives. IIK upholds India’s umbrella of Unity in Diversity and intends to make Indians feel at home and interact freely in Korea. Regardless of religion, region, culture and language, doors of IIK are open for every Indian. With the help of our lively discussion in group, meetings, get together parties, sociocultural activities and the best helping hands by each of the members in the group, IIK wishes to provide every individual an open communication platform to share experiences, social knowledge and simultaneously a feeling of togetherness. We are proud to be Indian ever since the significance of being an Indian is known to every individual. We, in Korea, are for work, education, name and fame of our country as well as our own. Any differentiation, disintegration towards the great India must be kept at bay. Keeping in mind to raise our country's name and fame as well as our own, we should help each other and make our stay more comfortable in Korea. Indians In Korea (IIK) is a biggest Indian association in Korea by Indians and for people that have common interest and link to India. IIK’s foundation has been strong because of vast inspiration & support from community members. 1 2015 started with adding new members to core team. New core team members demonstrated their leadership skills and dedication toward the Indian diaspora throughout the year. It was a successful year, with the vision of serving Indian diaspora & improving relationship with our Korean friends. Due to team work & dedicated efforts, IIK successfully executed and completed 7 activities in 2015. IIK’s relation with Korean friends became more stronger by collaborating with Yeongdong-gun County introduced by Korea-India Association (KOINA). IIK members were able to enjoy the natural beauty and ancient Korean music through valuable support of Yeongdong-gun County government. It was an another achievement nail in IIK’s portfolio. IIK successfully completed 1 year MoU term with KOINA, by helping Korean organization to recruit Indian talents in and outside Republic of Korea. IIK maintained its trademark of being creative / unique in event format by introducing “Diwali Mela” on the occasion of Diwali celebration. IIK Cricket Club demonstrated best Cricket skills by grabbing runner-up position in ICA T20 Incheon Cup. Year on Year IIK Events & Cricket team is elevating its level. Activities were not limited to fun and get-together, but also joining hands to raise descent amount to support Chennai flood devastation. IIK organized fund raising campaign together with other Indian associations in Korea, collected amount was distributed among various NGOs and Individuals working in field to help flood victims. IIK’s vision for 2016 is to – 1. Develop stronger core team. 2. Get closer to each Indian association in Korea. 3. Develop healthy relationship with Korean friends. 4. Develop healthy relationship with Government institutions. Mr. Dwarkaprasad Dayama President, Indians In Korea 2 Jaraseom Winter Festival February 1, 2015 The best of Korea’s winter festivals are seen once the rivers freeze and the snow covers the mountains. After IIK Diwali 2015 event, IIK organized a IIK Winter Festival 2015- "Jarasom shingshing Winter Festival (자라섬 씽씽겨울축제)" for Indian diaspora to enjoy the winter in Korea on February 1, 2015. It is the largest winter festival in metropolitan area, the Jaraseom Singsing Winter Festival is held around early January to early February every year. More than 40 guests from different parts of Korea joined this event. Staying safe on the snow is so important – things can go wrong in an instant, so it was vital that anyone who ventures out into the snow and ice is prepared for emergency so IIK has provided safety tips for the participants. It was great to see such a huge turnout – an indication that people genuinely are interested in playing it safe on the frozen river and snow. Participants enjoyed Ice fishing for trout, snow bumper, snow sledding, ice sledding, ATV bike riding etc. fun filled activities with their families. Snow sculptures, ice trees with ice flowers, icicle fall, and igloo café are one of the main attractions installed around the ice square. Journey from Seoul to winter festival venue was enjoyed by the participants with exciting activities like antakshari, singing, games (housie presented by Mr. Dwarka) and ended in an excellent day. With professional music system and huge bags full of color, it was a blast! Holi Hungama Post Holi dancing, there we 2 games – the Couple Handcuff and the Tug of war. None of the couples could solve the Couple Handcuff game. Tug of war was surprisingly won by our young girls team (below 15 years). Yes, even tough boys tasted dust. Go girl go!! Couples get entangled Too tired! 5 6 Yeongdong-gun County Picnic July 25, 2015 IIK Yeongdong-gun County picnic was on a sunny summer Saturday. A total of 43 guests visited Yeongdong County which is very popular for Korean classical music (Gugak), wine and high-quality fruits (grapes, persimmon, pear, apple and peach). Wine Korea is the biggest wine factory in Korea and producer of Chateau Mani. Guests were given a detailed explanation on how wine is manufactured, packed and stored. This was followed by a relaxing wine pedicure & wine tasting. Members enjoyed potluck lunch at Songho site (famous for its pine tree forest). After lunch, visitors were allowed to pluck juicy peaches directly from trees at the fruit farm. The final part of the trip was visit to Nangye Korean Traditional Music Experience Center. Guests had a very special opportunity to play and experience Korean traditional instruments, after the wonderful Korean music concert. A Saturday full of new experiences! There were a total of 110+ players. Each innings was composed of 8 overs. The following were the tournament results: Winner -Pune Warriors Runner Up -Samsung Warriors Initially, IIK started playing cricket in Korea as “Lions Indian” which was then renamed as IIK Cricket Club. IIKCC is involved in playing and promoting quality and disciplined cricket. IIKCC currently participates in 2 competitions. One of them is GCL (Gyeonggi Cricket League) organized by KCA. GCL is a 20 overs competition played at Incheon Asian game cricket stadium (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeonhui_Cricket_Ground) comprised with 12 teams mainly from Seoul, Incheon and Suwon area. The other league is organized by Incheon Cricket Association (ICA) supported by Incheon city council. It is played within selected top ranked teams from India, Korea, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. We are proud to say that IIKCC became the runner up beating both Korea and Sri Lanka. Among the several forms of Raas, the most popular one is "Dandiya Raas", which is performed during Navratri. In fact, it holds a significant place in Navratri celebrations. It is known for setting the festive mood. Traditionally, Dandiya Raas is performed after aarti (ritual of worshipping the deity). The IIK in collaboration with Indian Students association in Seoul National University organized Dandiya Night 2015 at SNU on October 18, 2015. Program started with the worshipping the deity ‘Durga Mata’ followed by dance performances. Indians as well as other international community participants enjoyed this Dandiya night with non-stop Dancing, Gujrati folk music with Bollywood tit bits, electrifying energy, captivating beats, bright costumes and of course the cling clang of the new age Dandiya sticks! Garba dance competition was thoroughly enjoyed by the performers as well as the spectators and was one the entertaining and exciting experiences for everyone and finally culminating in to stage-shaking free style bollywood freestyle followed by a delicious Indian buffet. Diwali Dhamaka November 7, 2015 The event was divided into two parts – indoor performances followed by an outdoor mela. There were over 15 stalls serving mouth-watering food like pani-puri, bread bhajiyas, dosa, jalebi, vada pav, dabeli, chicken rolls, hot tea, etc. Stalls were set-up by individuals as well as professional restaurants like Chakraa, Nila, etc. Kids had a blast at the games stalls. Over 2 dozen gifts were up for grabs – microwave, juicer, toasters as well as Air India ticket!
