MISSION STATEMENT
WE SHALL SHELTER, NURTURE, AND CARE FOR
ABUSED, NEGLECTED, UNWANTED, AND STRAY
ANIMALS; HELPING THEM TO REGAIN TRUST IN
MANKIND; ASSIST WHEN ASKED; INTERVENE
WHEN NECESSARY.
GOALS
1. Work to rehabilitate those animals with special needs and problems, whether physical or
emotional; and provide them with new qualities to make them adoptable.
2. Implement school and public programs and services to promote responsible pet ownership.
3. Place animals into humane environments where they will receive food, water, shelter, vet
care, and the necessary human contact to fill their needs. We will NOT tolerate living
conditions where they will be chained or confined in inadquate space for long periods of
time.
4. Provide a spay/neuter program to the public, while at the same time, altering animals in
our shelter, prior to adoption.
5. Be advocates for animals, speaking for those who are innocent, that cannot speak for
themselves.

E-Newsletters are done by Sandy Kempa, who emails them to supplied email addresses. E-newsletters save
B.E. money, which we happily spend on the animals. Our newsletters can, also, be found on our own B.E.
Website at: brighteyesanimalshelter.org and NOW at our FACEBOOK account! Since, so many folks have
computers and can easily access either our website or Facebook for our newsletter; asking anyone that I email
newsletters to; if they would consider allowing me to delete their email address for newsletters. Newsletters can
be printed from our website or Facebook, for in your hand reading, too. Dale and Kindra do a great job of
keeping those sites current.
Those who do not have computers, will, of course, continue getting their paper newsletters; as well as those with
computers, who do not participate in the electronic features. We heartily thank Liz and Michele for doing the
paper newsletters and placing them at the Shelter, Skyline Lodge, Double Arrow Vet Clinic, East Slope Vet Clinic,

AUGUST 17, 2016 BRIGHT EYES GENERAL MEETING MINUTES
The President, Terrie Nylund, called the August meeting to order, and began by thanking Lorraine and
Richard for handling the Pennies for Pets money. She then asked attendees to peruse the 08/17/2016
Treasurer’s Report, and after discussion, it was approved as written. Income to the Regular Checking Account
came from Sales; Aluminum cans; Cash Donations, Memberships; Summer Festival; July 4 Bake Sale; Quilt
Raffle; Pennies for Pets donations; Memorials; Pet Memorials; and a transfer of funds from Savings. Expenses
were to: BSAMC (Pandora foods); Breen Oil (tank rental); Double Arrow; NW Energy; 3 Rivers (internet, phone);
inContact; Ace Hardware (litter); Montana Waste; Petco; Acantha (bake sale ads); June, July Payroll to Kindra
and Terrie; August payroll to Kindra; Unemployment insurance; Montana State and Federal taxes; 941 taxes;
Social Security taxes; Swensen Agency (financial work); Dog training tools; Shortgrass Web(annual 2 yr. Service
contract). The Spay/Neuter checking account had income from: Misc. sales; Adoption donations; Cash
donations. Expenses were to: East Slope (feline neuter); Double Arrow (Bitsy, feline spays, K9 spay, meds for
Tippy, Dental work and lumpectomy). Savings account income came from interest; and expenses were transfer
of funds to checking. Our CD’s are waiting for needed expenses for the animals, shelter, and property. Our
working capital is much smaller than our total assets, and is carefully managed for the benefit of needy animals.
A complete Treasurer’s Report is available in the meeting agenda or on request.
CORRESPONDENCE: 1. Ellen Aiken and David Hunt wrote a note about the 25# of pennies, they donated for
Pennies for Pets. Turns out that 25# of pennies totaled $38.xx, and we thank them! 2. Ann Clary Gordon wrote
notes and donations for K-9’s. 3. Luann and Richard C. wrote a note of how well adopted kitties, “Jazz” and
“Squints” are doing. 4. Coni and “Essie” wrote a nice note, that Essie will be 9 and is her best ever blessing!
5. Carly’s friend and co-worker, wrote how much she and her kitty enjoy her dog bone pillow. 6. Chamber of
Commerce’s renewal for B.E. to join, was turned down by the group. 7. Carole Bronson and Terry Barch ‘s note
about donation.
OLD BUSINESS: The June meeting minutes in June newsletter were approved, although, p.4 was missing from
the paper newsletter.

NEW BUSINESS:
A. DISCONTINUING RECYCLING ALUMINUM CANS was discussed. Since Steve and Terry Haynes are
not available, any more, for taking donated cans to Great Falls; it was decided to discontinue accepted
aluminum cans, beginning now. We ask that all aluminum cans you want to donate, be taken to the City Shop
Recycling area. PLEASE DO NOT BRING ALUMINUM CANS TO THE SHELTER!

NEW BUSINESS CONTINUED:
B. NO SHELTER OPEN HOUSE IS PLANNED FOR THIS YEAR! We had 10 wonderful open houses,
but, the last ones were not as well attended as earlier ones. So, the Nylund’s will host a Volunteer Appreciation
BBQ, at their home, in the near future.
C. CITY POOL OPEN DOG SWIM evening, will be Thursday, August 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Terrie asked if
anyone wishes to take a shelter dog, to please contact her. Crossed fingers for good weather!
D. SHELTER WINTER CLEANING SESSION, hoped for in November. The shelter will really need it.
Watch for the date, and hope you can make it. More hands, the better.
E. PENNIES FOR PETS netted $526.18 and more to be added, soon. Next year, depending on outdorr
temp and a canopy or shelter, it might be fun to have a dog or cat from the shelter, rotating them, for more
interest. Even though, the public likes us, likely there would be more interest and pennies, if we had one or more
of our charming pets, by the coin jug. All this depends on the outdoor temp. And a jug will be at Ace, too.
F. LABOR DAY WEEKEND SATURDAY, will need a shelter person to take Terrie’s shift. She and Steve
are going to Pullman to do some work with/for Adam. Please contact Terrie, if you can help.
G. KENNEL COUGH/BORDETELLA has been in the shelter dog population. We have had to be very
careful and clean extra well. Seems to be fading, now.
H. OUR FALL DINNER/DANCE date and location is still being worked on, and will be publicized, later.
I. KINDRA’s last shelter day was Sunday, August 14th, and she was able to attend the August 17th
meetings. She is moving back to Helena, the 18th. The staff and shelter animals will surely miss her!
J. NEXT MEETING will be WED., SEPT. 14th, 6:30 p.m. in the Library meeting room. We will be busy
making final plans for Dinner/Dance, as well as other topics. Do come and join us.

GOOD NEWS UPDATES!
1. SQUINTS and JAZZ kitties have settled in well in new home. Jazz has a really cute personality, and Squints
is so loving. LuAnn and Richard are enjoying both kitties!
2. ROGUE, kitten, is doing great in new home and he is so loved!
3. CHANCE dog is doing well in new home and gets along really well with other dog. They are new best friends!
4. TIPPY, Jack Russell Terrier, has found her forever home, and is living life to the fullest! She has a new pink
collar with flashy rhinestones on it, as well as a new pink bone shaped ID tag, a new pink harness, anda couple
of special doggie t-shirts. Tippy loves to sleep with her kind owners in their bed, has toured Glacier Park, gone
fishing, and went for a boat ride. She l loves car rides, too. She is the luckiest dog, ever!
5. ANNAKA cat sent B.E. an email and photos of her new life. Her new and wonderful owners fell in love with
Annaka from the photo on our website and adored her upon meeting. Annaka blissfully sits for hours beside a
nearby stream (under careful owner watch) and has a great catio, when Susan and Steve leave home. Annaka
and new feline friend, Amigo, are good at sharing ehri owners’ bed and home. Even her sensitive tummy has
settled down with new food. Annaka loves relaxing with Steve in his hammock in the cool shade. Annaka has,
indeed, won the Kitty Lottery! Thanks to Steve and Susan for giving this Old Gal a second chance!
6. KINDRA STIMSON, Intern Shelter Director, has finished a successful summer with us, and heads back to
Carroll College to finish her Anthrozoology degree. Both Bright Eyes and Kindra look forward to her return in
June, as permanent shelter director.

WE ARE STILL HOWLING FOR RESPONSIBLE ADULT VOLUNTEERS, WILLING TO HELP AT
THE SHELTER, ON A REGULAR, WEEKLY, SUBBING BASIS. Training provided. There is some physical labor
involved (cleaning, sweeping, dishes, litter pans, feeding, mopping). There is also phone work and meeting the
public. Mondays, Thursdays, every other Sundays, subbing---all badly needed. If you are a caring and
dependable adult, willing to help, please come to the shelter for the Volunteer Application.
SHELTER SUPPLIES NEEDED: Clay type cat litter; liquid laundry detergent, paper towels, address labels for
paper newsletters (8 1/2”x11” sheets); postage stamps, HP 564 black and color ink cartridges; white copy paper;
pastel copy paper, treats, used laser and ink jet cartridges; kleenex, box tops for education, soup can
labels,pump hand sanitizer. Sorry! Our recyclers do NOT accept toner cartridges, used MP3 Players, used
cellphones--anymore.
