Early Childhood Family Education is a program that cel-
ebrates the importance of families in
the development of children from birth
to kindergarten enrollment. Classes
provide opportunities for parents and
children to grow and learn together in a
supportive atmosphere.
We recognize that parents are
children’s first and most important
teachers. Classes are designed to provide parent and child interaction time,
guided play and learning experiences for
children and a parent discussion time.
Children make new friends and parents
have a special opportunity to share and
learn from each other. Classes are offered day and evening.
Still time to join us!
ECFE Parent / Child Classes
Classes run one and one half
hours. The first 45 minutes parents and
children play together and have a group
circle activity. Toys and a variety of activities are set out, from which the family can select learning experiences. The
last 45 minutes, parents and children divide. The children will spend time with
their peers and Early Childhood teacher
in activities that encourage cognitive
development, sociability, sharing and
developing independence. The parents
will meet together for informal discussion and presentations on relevant topics for their needs.

Southland Early Childhood Conducts “Read to Me Daddy”
Southland Early Childhood in
partnership with the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation is sponsored a
reading program this fall entitled “Read
to me Daddy” with the young families
of our school district.
Southland Early Childhood received 150 books valued at $2,250.
Southland Early Childhood Center’s
commitment to children and families
will include “Read to me Daddy” which
invites dads and their children to learn
more about literacy and the importance
of reading to your children. Each child
received a book of his or her own.
This program is designed to
promote early literacy within our communities and encourage children to develop a life-long love of reading, while
encouraging parents, especially dads,
to read aloud to their children.
The grant was received from
the BookStart Program, in partnership
with the Southern MN Initiative Foundation and Picture Window Books.
The children and their dads enjoyed looking at the over 100 different
titles of books. A handout on Family Literacy tips and a bookmark was given to
each family. If you have a preschooler and would
like to receive a free book, please call
582-3405 or stop by the Early Childhood
Center 312 W. Main in Adams.

Avon representative from Rose Creek.
We will make a 40% profit on each regular item
sold and 20% on any clothing purchases. Orders will be
taken between October 9-24 with order forms needing to
be turned into the Southland High School Office by October 25. Payment must be collected at the time the order
is placed and turned in with the order forms. Checks can
be made payable to Southland Post Prom. Items will be
ready for pick-up on Friday, November 3. Since this is
a half-day of school, pick-up will be immediately after
dismissal that day at 12:30.
There will be prizes awarded to the top selling
boy and girl from each class from Avon. Your support of
this project will help us make a safe and fun night for our
Juniors and Seniors on Prom Night 2007.
Please see any Junior or Senior to place your order. If you are not contacted by anyone and would like

From the Counselor ... Mrs. Schmit
SENIORS
Some things you need to know for your
Senior Year……
•Start filling out those college applications! Completed applications should be turned into Mrs. Schmit.
Please include the application fee, and
any letters of recommendation or essays. Students should also bring their
own addressed envelope (you do not
need a stamp; Mrs. Schmit will mail
them for you). An official transcript will
be included with every college application.
•College applications can be
found online through the institution’s
website and in the filing cabinets in
the Career Corner of the Media Center.
Please see Mrs. Schmit if you cannot find
what you are looking for.
•The next ACT test date is December 9. Registration
deadline
is November 3. If you haven’t taken
the ACT or SAT, of if you are not satisfied with your previous score, pick up
a registration packet in the Counseling
Office. You can also register online at
www.actstudent.org.
JUNIORS
Be sure to take time to explore
the web sites for both the ACT (www.
act.org) and SAT (www.collegeboard.
com) tests. You should be gearing up
to take either of these College Entrance
tests this year. Most students in our area
take the ACT because most colleges will
accept either test score. There are several elite colleges in the eastern USA
that will only accept SAT scores. You
can find out more information and even
register for these tests online.
The PSAT/NMSQT Test is a Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Results from this
test are used for Hormel Scholarships
and determine National Merit Recognition. The PSAT/NMSQT is optional for
Juniors and will be given here at school
on Wednesday, October 18. The cost is
$13. Sign up by September 25 in the
Counseling Office.
SOPHOMORES
The ACT PLAN test will be given
here at school on Wednesday, October
25. The PLAN test is a “pre-ACT” test
that provides excellent practice for the
ACT and gives you a forecast of how you
might do on the ACT Assessment. If you
are undecided about what to do after
graduation, PLAN can help bring your
future into focus. Taking the PLAN is
optional. However, all sophomores are
encouraged to participate in the PLAN. The cost for the PLAN this year
is FREE! Because the 2005 Minnesota
Education Bill encourages the use of the
PLAN, districts that choose to give the
assessment will have it paid for by the
state. Sign up by October 2nd in the
Counseling Office.
FRESHMEN
Welcome to High School! We
hope you’re getting into the swing of
things. Starting this year your grades
begin to accumulate for graduation.
You will be required to make up failed
courses before you can graduate from
high school. Attend your classes everyday. Complete all of your assignments.
Study for those tests and you will succeed. If you find yourself struggling with
a certain subject, talk to the teacher.

Mayo Clinic is hosting its 2nd
Health Career Festival on October 11
for students in grades 10-12. This event
will include general and specific information, hands-on activities and direct
conversations with people in the field
of interest. Students should be seriously interested in health care careers
and want to attend and engage in their
program offerings. Students interested
in participating in this event MUST meet
with Mrs. Schmit and fill out an application. Attendance is on a first come, first
serve basis and applications must be
received by Mayo Clinic NO LATER than
September 22. See Mrs. Schmit ASAP if
you are interested or want more information.
A Letter to District Patrons Regarding an Operating Referendum
District Patrons,
Two years ago, the voters in our
district approved an operating referendum for $847 per pupil. This means that
for every student attending Southland,
we receive an additional $847 in revenue, some from local taxes and some
from the state. This referendum is in
place for six years, and will generate
about $550,000 each year. Last spring,
we needed to make budget reductions
of $420,000, even though we knew this
referendum is in place.
School funding in Minnesota is
based largely on student enrollment. An
increase in enrollment generates more
revenue, and decreasing enrollment
means less money.
Enrollment in our district has
been declining since 2002-03. According to our projections, enrollment will
continue to decline. In just the next
four years, enrollment will drop by 20
to 50 students per year. When you figure approximately $5000 in revenue for
each student, projections are for losses
of $100,000 to $250,000 each of these
years. Since enrollment drives revenue,
we will need to continue making budget
reductions, just to keep revenue and expenses even. Factoring in general cost
increases and inflation, additional budget reductions will need to occur as our
enrollment drops.
Another way to add revenue is
to increase the operating referendum.
This cannot be done without voter approval. After discussion on Sept. 11th,
the board approved a resolution to ask
the voters to increase the operating referendum. The proposal asks for $450
per pupil for four years. If approved,
the dollars generated would be approximately $290,000 for each of the four
years, based on current enrollment.
Even with these additional monies, bud-
get reductions are likely, though not as
severe.
The vote will occur during the
general election on Tuesday, Nov. 7th.
Below are examples of the tax impact
on real estate, if the referendum is approved. Please keep in mind that for this
type of referendum, farms are taxed on
the house, garage, and one acre of land,
not for other acreage.
We will be communicating information to you in as many ways as possible during the time leading up to the
election. Also please call me or one of
the board members with any questions
or comments.
