passes. It seems just yesterday that
I was writing about the approaching
summer of 2011 and the perils and
opportunities facing our youth.
Well, here we are again, and I am
giving similar advice with a few new
perils. As school winds down for
summer break, I feel compelled to
remind parents and caregivers that
young people sitting idle without
supervision is often a formula for
trouble. The economy is still struggling; money is tight, so many of us
will have to be more creative this year.
I spent a minute searching the
Internet and found several low-cost
options, including Boys and Girls
Clubs of America and the YMCA. Both

With all of the problems in our communities, prescription drug misuse,
easy access to illicit drugs, and
increasing juvenile crime rates, it is
incumbent on us all as caregivers of
the next generation to keep them
safe and ready for the future.
Make sure that you have a summertime plan for your family that
includes some adult supervision,
check in with your kids often, and
know their friends and associates. A
little interest in their lives on a daily
basis can yield amazing results.

What Is Fentanyl?
The drug that took my cousin’s life!
“They just found my son dead in a hotel room and suspect a drug overdose.”
Horrible words we hope never to hear about a loved one, close friend, or
acquaintance. Three months ago, I was visiting a relative when he got the call,
notifying him that his son’s struggle with prescription drugs was over. The final
toxicology report attributed death to an overdose of Fentanyl, a legal prescription opiate that works by blocking the pain receptors in the brain. It is sold in
several different forms and is intended to help manage severe and chronic pain.
It is normally delivered via a patch that allows a slow release of the drug over several days. However, addicts have found ways to process the patches and ingest
the entire dose at once, increasing the chances of an accidental overdose as they
chase an ever-elusive high.

An overdose of Fentanyl causes respiratory depression (slows down breathing
rate) and in higher doses can completely stop respirations, leading to complete
respiratory failure. Respiratory failure leads to cardiac arrest, because without
breathing there is no oxygenation, and without oxygen the organs cannot work.
The bottom line is you stop breathing and die. Fentanyl has also resulted in
serious medical issues, including death, among children who find a new or used
patch and ingest it. Additionally, emergency rooms have provided treatment to
many severely ill and elderly patients who become disoriented and place new
patches on their body without removing the old ones. Once again we have a
prescription drug that, when used properly, can provide relief to seriously ill
people. However, used improperly it is a killer and leaves behind grieving mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, wives, husbands… and cousins.

A
ccording to the 2010 Pew Research Center survey,
an average of 160,000 children miss school each
day because they are fearful that if they attend, they
will be bullied. Moreover, every seven minutes a child
is bullied on a school playground, with over 85% of
those instances occurring without any intervention.
Every half hour a child commits suicide as a direct
result of being bullied.
These are staggering statistics to ponder, but they’re
not difficult to explain when you consider the
world our youth live in today. Near constant connection to the outside world through electronics
has changed the face of the bullying problem.
Modern technology has also extended the bully’s
reach, opportunity, and audience. According to
the Cyberbullying Research Center:
• about 50% of teenagers have experienced
some form of online harassment and 10 to
20% experience it regularly
• over 25% of adolescents and teens have
been bullied repeatedly through their cell
phones or the internet

Associated With Bullying
The Surgeon General’s Report on Youth Violence lists a number of protective factors that help buffer the risk of youth violence. Among these protective factors,
the Stay on Track health curriculum also provides youth with the ability to:
• have a positive outlook on social situations
• become aware of consequences for bad behavior
• enjoy supportive relationships with parents or other adults
• be committed to school
• increase their communication with their parent(s) or guardian(s)
• have positive values and a caring attitude
• have a healthy lifestyle
• possess social competency skills
If you are seeking an evidence-based health curriculum to enhance your bullying prevention strategies, consider implementing the Stay on Track program.
Since 2006, the Stay on Track health curriculum has promoted effective social,
resiliency, and personal competence skills among 400,000 youth in the sixth-,
seventh-, and eighth-grades.

them will jump at the chance to assist you, reinforcing your efforts.

Here are a few ways :
• Invite community members to help shape the
goals of a school drug policy and develop a plan
for prevention and enforcement. Invite the local
media. Form a committee and follow through
with your community goals.

• Since 2006, 574,565 Stay on Track materials
have been shipped to all 50 states, four territories
and Costa Rica!
• Since 2006, we have certified 2,096 individuals to
implement Stay on Track.
• Our Solutions newsletter reaches 3,804 people
each month. (That number continues to grow.)
• Encourage collaborative meetings by bringing
together staff, parents, school board members,
police officials, drug treatment organizations,
local merchants and professionals, and private
groups to share ideas and expertise in prevention.
• If teaching Stay on Track, get permission to
hang Stay on Track signs where minors may
try to buy tobacco or alcohol, as well as at “hangouts”, to serve as a visual reminder.
• Work with local officials to pass ordinances that
help to discourage tobacco and alcohol use
by students, such as limiting where vending
machines are placed and where advertisements
for these products may appear. Encourage vigorous enforcement of laws governing the sale of
tobacco and alcohol to underage persons.

for Great Cause

and Clint King all appeared at
Sportway of Toledo the evening
of May 18th as part of a special
go-karting event hosted by the
National Center for Prevention
and Research Solutions and ARCA
Safety Initiative sponsors RAD
Racing Team and Stay on Track.
Each driver had the chance to race
go-karts with and sign autographs
for local area kids, and all four
introduced themselves and spoke
briefly about being healthy and
safe in all aspects of life.
On Saturday, May 11th, Amanda
Ferguson and her family
participated in a fundraising
event, A Big Run for Small Steps,
at Breakers Oceanfront Park in
Daytona Beach, FL to raise funds
for a local preschool. The event
was filled with many smiles from
children and families who were
thrilled to have the opportunity
to take pictures with Amanda, see
Amanda’s racecar, and take her
autograph home. As a bystander, I
must say the look in the children’s
eyes was priceless. The impact
of her “drug free, just like me”
message was felt at the event and
many children walked away with a
memory to last a lifetime.

5th at the Silver Dollar Raceway
in Reynolds, GA. Reba Sellers was
the winner for race #3 and she was
extra excited because it was also
her 17th birthday!
Congrats to Reba! She will now

prize drawing of a $500 savings
bond and flat screen T.V.! The
grand prize drawing will be
held in October during the Silver
